Good day, and welcome to the Fall edition of Convergence magazine! As the new Executive Director of South Shore Arts and the Northwest Indiana Symphony—organizations that, for more than 80 years, have championed the Arts in our Region—the act of writing my very first “welcome” at the opening of our quarterly publication going out to patrons, partners and community members is a daunting task. Not only does this document contain the important details regarding our organizations, of our upcoming classes and events, of our 81st Symphony season and more, it also sets the tone for our vision for the Arts along the South Shore.

And let me start there. The Arts truly are alive and thriving in our Region. I see that in the engagement and participation I have witnessed in the record turnout for the Beaux Arts Ball in June, in our growing art class enrollment each quarter, in our attendance at our summer Nature Lovers exhibit, as well as the community events that we hosted to enrich our gallery experience, and in the communities’ response to our Northwest Indiana Symphony Summer Music Festival, just to name a few organizations, as the Regional Art Partner for Region 1 of the Indiana Arts Commission, there was near record interest in the Arts Project Support grant program that we administer for the IAC in Lake, Porter and LaPorte counties, almost double the number of organizational applicants requesting funds to deliver arts programming across our communities. While, for the first time in memory, we could not fund all requests, we were successful in granting funds to 13% more art project requests for Fiscal Year 2023 overall— another sign of a thriving and engaged Arts community in our Region. And a thriving Arts community plays a critical role in contributing to the quality of life in our Region. While every community strives to provide affordable housing, good education, and accessible health care, it is the investment in the Arts that provides the “color” to our communities—the healthy, creative outlets in which to positively express ourselves and to reflect on life and hope in our Region. As the new Executive Director of South Shore Arts and the Northwest Indiana Symphony, I want to ensure that our two organizations, combined under a single umbrella of vision, leadership and arts support, continue to connect with other Regional organizations, both within the Arts community and beyond, to help recognize the value that the Arts can play in promoting the quality of life in the Region, as well as to attract others from outside the area to visit or relocate to Northwest Indiana.

Hopefully you’ll find plenty of evidence of that effort as you peruse the pages that follow. Enjoy! Dave

Andrew & Iwona Pietowski, Zbigniew Bzdak, Maggie Walker and Mark Dobrzycki “Nature Stories” was the theme of an evening of fast-paced story-telling around the theme of Nature that featured exhibiting artists and gallery visitors

South Shore Arts drew countless visitors, many of them new to the Center for Visual & Performing Arts, through activities associated with the summer exhibit, Nature Lovers, the opening reception for which packed the gallery on a Thursday evening in June. Exhibit curators Linda Dorman and Tom Torluemke led a personalized gallery tour of the exhibit the following Monday, while Atrium artist Kerri Mommer did the same one monthThreelater.programs were presented in conjunction with three-month exhibit, including “Nature Stories,” at which speakers were allowed to present 20 slides and have 20 second to talk about each slide. This was followed by a special screening of the award-winning film Godspeed, Los Polacos!, dubbed the lost story of the world’s greatest road trip. Following their epic two-year journey that culminated in the record-breaking first descent of the world’s deepest canyon, the film tells the story of five Polish kayakers on the edge of adulthood who skillfully pull the strings of the Soviet system and find themselves on an expedition in the Americas where they leverage their newfound fame to fight for democracy in the Eastern Bloc. Photographer Zbigniew Bzdak, featured in the exhibit is also featured in the film.

Finally, Climate Follies, a new play written by Jim Poyser, consisting of over a dozen short plays that explore aspects of our unraveling climate system and the human response, was presented as a staged reading by audience members. Participants were directed by John Green, professor in the Theatre Department at Columbia College Chicago.

The much-awaited return to in-person Art in Focus lectures began this past June with guided tours of our summer exhibits led by curators Linda Dorman and Tom Torluemke and artist Kerri Mommer. Participants enjoyed coffee as they learned about the nine artists featured in Nature Lovers, with stories aimed to illuminate the artists’ experiences and messages about the natural environment around us. A second in-person session was led by artist Kerri Mommer as she discussed her Atrium exhibit. Art in Focus will continue to include programming that aims to highlight current exhibits and programming at South Shore Arts through lecture, film, dialogue, and even the occasional opportunity to make some art! Upcoming lectures this fall will include a guided tour of the annual Salon Show with Gallery Coordinator Brandon Johnson on Monday, September 26, at 10am. On November 28 participants can enjoy a close-up view of the photojournalism exhibit This is It, with curators Dorman + Torluemke. Thanks to generous support from Community Healthcare System, Art in Focus is free for adult learners of all ages who are interested in the arts and its impact on our world, past, present, and future.

For the first time since March 2020, the doors at South Shore Arts’ Substation No. 9 in Hammond will reopen for a variety of new and exciting offerings. Visual arts classes for adults and youth will begin this October and include airbrushing techniques, a papier mache puppet theatre, and “Custom Apparel Designs,” a new class intended to guide teens in learning more about developing and sustaining their own fashion brand. Studio management and professional instructors are continuing to work together to diligently promote and provide safe and in-person visual arts experiences for all participants. OPPORTUNITIES for

Beginning this fall, South Shore Arts will begin offering weekly Art Camps that provide after-school art enrichment opportunities that give families a variety of engaging art themes offered on a consistent, twice-weekly schedule. Young artists ages 5 to 12 are invited to come to Art Camp ready to draw, paint, sculpt, sew, and dream big! Weekly themes will include making ceramic bobblehead selfportraits, designing polymer jewelry, and learning the basics of hand-sewing during November’s “National Teddy Bear Week.” All supplies are included, and a socially distanced and nut-free after-school snack will be provided. Each weekly Art Camp will run on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 4:30-6pm, at the Center for Visual & Performing Arts. The fee to participate is $60 weekly and kids can sign up for one or as many sessions as they like. Space is limited.

South Shore Arts and the Northwest Indiana Symphony are happy to announce the hiring of our new Administrative Coordinator supporting both of our organizations, Avin Hannah-Smith. As an artist himself, Avin is a color theorist who values color and brings it into his creative practice. While new to the Administrative Coordinator role, Avin is not new to our organization as he is an Art Instructor for us as well. Avin teaches figure drawing and plein-air watercolor in his current courses for South Shore Arts.

By way of background, Avin hails from Chicago but earned his BFA with a concentration in Painting from Kent State University in Kent, Ohio. Aside from being an artist, Avin is also a musician—trained in percussion—with an appreciation for all music. His passion does not stop in the realm of art, as he is currently a part of a fellowship program through Grassroots Collaboration, a nonprofit organization that is partnered with several other nonprofits throughout Chicagoland to bring about community change for the better. Avin is excited to engage his passion for the arts in all segments of his professional career now as artist, educator and administrator. Given his naturally positive and happy demeanor, Avin is a terrific person to be the “face” of our organization greeting visitors and students, answering phones, and supporting our team. Please join us in congratulating Avin on his expanded role within our South Shore Arts and Northwest Indiana Symphony organizations. our newest staff member!

This year’s Beaux Arts Ball—our first real Beaux Arts event in three years—was celebrated on June 3, 2022, at the Center for Visual & Performing Arts. The evening was a tremendous success, a fun-filled event that netted over $175,000 in support of arts education. Some went all-out with the disco theme, rendering themselves almost unrecognizable! The evening was also a celebration of John Cain’s retirement and many accomplishments after almost 30 years as our leader and the Executive Director of both South Shore Arts and Northwest Indiana SymphonyCongratulationsOrchestra.and heartfelt thanks to our generous and engaged attendees, board members, committee, community of donors and staff for helping to make it all happen, especially the four co-chairs, Dr. Rebecca Galante, Amy Koufos, Corey Hecht and Jenny Yalowitz. & Brian Popp Jenny Yalowitz, John Cain and Amy Koufos?

The Beaux Arts Ball is the primary annual fundraising event for South Shore Arts with proceeds benefitting the everykid art education programs for children, youth, and families. The success of the Ball allows South Shore Arts to sustain and grow these programs that have reached thousands of residents of Northwest Indiana and south suburban Chicago since its inception in 1995. Two especially generous supporters of the everykid program, Diane and David Schneider, were publicly recognized with the Patrons of the Year award. The Schneiders became interested in South Shore Arts after attending several exhibits and the Beaux Arts Ball years ago. Former Munster residents, the Schneiders feel that the arts are a meaningful part of the community, especially in the schools, and have long supported and promoted our work.We once again used a mobile bidding platform for our Silent Auction, which was one of the most successful ever. Zane’s DJ Production entertained all night and kept the light-up, disco dance floor full with guests shaking their booties and kicking up their platform shoes until midnight. As part of the disco theme, centerpieces featured disco balls and glowing lights. It was lots of fun and a very successful 29th Annual Beaux Arts Ball, celebrating John Cain’s retirement. Major sponsors of the event were BP America, Inc, Sue Eleuterio & Tom Sourlis, the Morrow Family Foundation, lead underwriters of the everykid program, and Diane & David Schneider. Largus Graphix Solutions donated the invitations, and Judith Mayer Creative designed them. Special thanks to our unrivalled live auctioneer, Tom O’Donnell!

Please mark your calendars for the 30th Annual Beaux Arts Ball, June 2, 2023, for another evening in support of arts education!

An unprecedented opportunity to raise $90,000 in matching funds presented itself in conjunction with John Cain’s departure from South Shore Arts as Executive Director after almost 29 years, when anonymous donors, whose family history with South Shore Arts goes back many decades, offered to match, dollar for dollar, every gift made to this campaign. South Shore Arts has had many remarkable opportunities come its way over the past three decades, including the transformation of South Shore Arts from Northern Indiana Arts Association—just one of its many past appellations—into a Regional Arts Partner of the Indiana Arts Commission, providing arts leadership, promotion, advocacy and funding to Lake, Porter and LaPorte county arts providers since 1997.

This challenge was an incredibly positive way for John to bring to a close his career with South Shore Arts, and we are thrilled to report that we not only reached the challenge goal but exceeded it by nearly $20,000! With the amount that exceeded the original goal of $90,000, South Shore Arts will establish an endowment fund to support an annual Salon Show award, beginning this year, in the amount of $500 in John’s name. What is more, John will be invited to select the recipient of this award himself. We feel that this is a fitting tribute to an individual whose career has supported artists and the arts in our region for nearly three decades. The individuals, families, foundations and companies listed below all contributed generously to make this campaign an unparalleled success. YOUTH ORCHESTRA BEGINS

The 2021–22 season of the Northwest Indiana Symphony Youth Orchestra ended in full celebration mode on Sunday, April 3, with a “Showcase Gala,” complete with performances, luncheon and silent auction. This year’s showcase was personally organized by the Youth Orchestra members themselves, who performed as solo or ensemble acts. Guests of honor were Maestros Philip Bauman and Benjamin Nadel, and, Maestro Bauman, who has taken a position with the South Bend Symphony Orchestra, was treated to a video montage, highlighting his 20-year tenure as Youth Orchestra Music Director & Conductor during the afternoon’s concert. Highlights of his career included trips throughout North America, Germany, Austria, and Italy. Having accepted the position of Director of Operations in South Bend, Maestro Bauman conducted his final concert with the Youth Orchestra on May 1, 2022, but his influence on the young musicians will have a lasting effect.

Succeeding Phil as head of the Youth Orchestra is Benjamin Nadel, a classically trained conductor, pianist, and violinist based in Chicago. Ben is also the Associate Conductor and Orchestra Librarian for the Northwest Indiana Symphony Orchestra and New Philharmonic, as well as Orchestra Director at North Central College. As we approach the 2022-23 season, Ben is extremely excited to begin with the Northwest Indiana Youth Symphony. It is his goal to provide the orchestra and students with outstanding experiences in music making, and watch the students continue to learn and grow as individuals and artists.
