The POWER of Scholarship It Doesn’t Matter Where You Are From—It Matters Where You Are Going As we celebrate the 15th anniversary of the South Shore Arts everykid program, we want to share with you the story of a young man named Diego Gonzalez, who was a student in one of the very first after-school scholarship classes that we held at the Center for Visual and Performing Arts in 1995. He recently reached out to us because, he says, now it is his turn to pay it forward. Diego wrote, “I was a student in elementary school from Hammond, who received a scholarship to be an art student there. It meant a tremendous deal to me, and I have never forgotten the experience of all the great people who gave me the opportunity to pursue my career as an artist. “I remember walking up to the building and thinking, this is a BIG DEAL. At that moment, as a 4th grader from Irving Elementary, I didn’t realize how big a deal it really was. In retrospect, that is where it all began for me.” The Hammond After-School Scholarship class that began in 1995 was initially created through a partnership with NIPSCO and later the City of Hammond. South Shore Arts matches funds to continue to provide this as part of our everykid program. This ten-week program provides students with an enriching arts opportunity at no cost. Diego credits the scholarship class with giving him an early confidence and providing the inspiration to continue what would become a lifelong path into the arts. He went on to study at the Herron School of Art and Design and Purdue University Calumet, earning a degree in Graphic Design and Communications. “The scholarship class, the Center for Visual and Performing Arts and South Shore Arts were such huge influences on my life,” Diego says. “I grew up poor. Where I came from, I was told people don’t care about you, especially people from outside the community, but South Shore Arts gave a scholarship to some kid they didn’t know. This was almost too much for my young mind to wrap around. I think that is where the seed was planted. It’s so easy to focus on the negative. There is power in positivity and I’ve learned that it’s contagious.” Today, Diego is the owner of Airbrush Monsters, a custom airbrushing design company. His medium is acrylics and his tools of choice are the airbrush and spray cans. Just 28, he has been working professionally in his field for over 10 years. A majority of his orders are placed online, but he has also operated out of a location in Southlake Mall; his products are sold and shipped both domestically and internationally.

“I am an artist, but I am also a businessman,” he says. “I enjoy watching my business grow. I am looking to expand at some point. Most importantly, I want to be an example to kids out there who were like me. I want them to know that it does not matter where you are from; it matters where you are going. “My influences are street and urban art as well as traditional art from my studies at Herron. The techniques of airbrush are a heavily guarded secret in this very competitive industry. Not many airbrush artists are willing to share their techniques. I love sharing what I know with people. I think that comes from my lifelong appetite for knowledge. In middle school and high school, I took every art class I could. I checked out every art book in the library, even the ones with black-and-white pictures that no one ever checked out.”

Diego, who started selling air-brushed T-shirts at a flea market in Gary when he was just 16, has a YouTube page dedicated to tutorials of his airbrushing techniques. “I grew up in a single-parent home and was raised by my mom. She always encouraged me and taught me that there are no limits to success. I still believe that. I have no limits. I think that is what keeps me positive. I look forward to my future with my art, my business and continuing to give back. It was a natural decision to begin with South Shore Arts. I owe it to them. I am looking forward to volunteering or possibly setting up my own scholarship.” South Shore Arts executive Director John Cain believes that there are doubtless many young people out there with similar stories about how the everykid program has positively impacted their lives over the past twenty years. “This is why we do what we do at South Shore Arts,” he says. “Because we believe that art can transform people’s lives!” The Hammond After-School Scholarship class continues to be a core component of the everykid program. The success of this program led to the creation of a followup class as a way of continuing art enrichment for the scholarship students who maintained good attendance. This program has also been mirrored at the Crown Point Branch for Hanover School District students. Through classes, outreach, scholarships, exhibits, and art appreciation programs, South Shore Arts continues to create opportunities to make the arts accessible and a transformative experience.

Hammond After-School Scholarship Class

Creativity abounds! Field trips, scholarships and classes at

South Shore Arts keep the Center for Visual and Performing Arts bustling. During the annual Toot ’n’ Doodle field trip, students experimented with instruments and then channeled that musical energy through a correlating art project. Nurturing future Michelangelos, Creative Fingers students put their skills to work on their masterpieces. Hammond’s brightest stars are chosen to be in the Hammond After-School Scholarship class. These art scholars are serious about their art, but they are also serious about having fun!

FUN WITH

South Shore Arts’ Free Family Fun Day with Frida lived up to its name! Over 400 people visited the gallery on Sunday, December 14 from 12–3pm to enjoy the festivities and visit the Frida Kahlo exhibit, celebrating her work and Mexican heritage. In addition to free exhibit admission, there were refreshments, a kids mask-coloring activity, entertainment by dance group Xel-Ha Escuela de Danza from East Chicago, Indiana, under the direction of Debra Bolanos, and Mariachi Santa Maria, a children’s ensemble under the direction of Juan Olvera. Executive Director John Cain & artist Marco Salazar did a bilingual reading of the children’s book Frida. The crowd loved it and cheered on all of the performers.

Organized by Global Entertainment Properties 2, Los Angeles, California, The Complete Frida Kahlo: Her Paintings. Her Life. Her Story. was an educational exhibit featuring 123 hand-painted licensed replicas by ©Banco de Mexico Diego Rivera & Frida Kahlo Museums Trust / VG Bild-Kunst, Bonn 2008. With recreations of Kahlo’s art, costumes and artifacts, the exhibit followed the life and work of this iconic 20th century female artist.

Donor Uses

Creativity

to Build Endowment

When the Legacy Foundation recently announced the availability of matching funds totaling $1.4 million through the GIFT Initiative: Phase VI from Lilly Endowment, Inc., a South Shore Arts donor happily discovered a creative way to establish a new endowment fund through a unique qualifying gift. The GIFT Initiative matched gifts from individuals, commercial advised funds or private foundations creating or adding to nonprofit endowments held at Legacy 50 cents for each $1 donated. Stock transfers, cash, charitable gift annuities, charitable remainder trusts, real estate, and insurance policies were among the types of gifts that qualified for the match. Rather than utilizing one of the more customary modes of establishing an endowment, the South Shore Arts donor made a gift of art to qualify for the match, while establishing a fund that will endow a prize in the donor’s name, along with that of her late husband, for the annual South Shore Arts Salon Show. Contributions from individuals and distributions from endowed funds currently generate $10,000 in prizes to artists annually in this juried exhibition that is open to artists from Indiana and Cook and Will counties in Illinois and South Shore Arts member artists wherever they may live. Throughout their time in our region, the donor and her husband actively served and supported the arts through attendance, board membership, monetary contributions and especially by purchasing artwork from working artists. The donors purchased a stunning 41” tall Stephen Rolf Powell art glass vessel from a South Shore Arts exhibit presented at the Center for Visual and Performing Arts in the early 2000s. The exhibit was organized with the cooperation of the Marx Saunders contemporary art glass gallery in Chicago, which, as Ken Saunders Gallery, continues to represent many of the leading glass-makers working today. With an appraised donation value of $18,000, the donor’s contribution qualified for a $9,000 match from the Lilly Endowment!

BREAKFAST AT TIFFANY’S & FESTIVAL OF TREES

Holiday Luncheons Raise Money for the Arts

Holiday events at the Center for Visual and Performing Arts are well-established holiday traditions for several hundred loyal patrons who attend year after year. These annual festivities create holiday merriment while also raising muchneeded funds for the arts! At this year’s annual Holiday Reading, South Shore Arts Executive Director John Cain read a selection from Truman Capote’s immortal Breakfast at Tiffany’s. Capote, who was born in 1924 and died just shy of 60, would have turned 90 on September 30, 2014. This year’s reading was attended by approximately 350 guests on Tuesday, November 18. Special thanks to sponsors Vanis Salon & Day Spa and Community Healthcare System, as well as raffle contributors Albert’s Diamond Jewelers, Strack & Van Til, El Taco Real, It’s Just Serendipity, Downtown Hammond Council, Indiana Ballet Theatre and Brumm’s Bloomin’ Barn. The 26th Festival of Trees luncheon sponsored by the Women’s Association of the Northwest Indiana Symphony Society (WANISS) was held on Wednesday, December 3, 2014. Nearly 400 guests shared the holiday spirit and contributed to WANISS support of the Symphony. Festivities began with attendees admiring trees decorated by businesses and civic groups, visiting the Boulevard of Shoppes and enjoying the wassail bowl. The first place award in the tree competition went to Dixon’s Florist for “An Arctic Holiday,” while second place went to Hospice of the Calumet Area for “Believe” and third place went to Munster Garden Club for “Angels of Nature.”
