Sad day in Kenmare as Kenmare Select announces closure 2 | Kenmare News

Independent Deputy Michael Healy-Rae has said the loss of a factory in South Kerry is a ‘devastating blow’ to the area following the announcement today that Kenmare Select is to close. Around 25 people are employed full-time in the factory which specialises in smoked salmon and fish products. Kenmare Select was started by French chef, Rémy Benoit, in 1991. The produce had won awards nationally and internationally. Staff were informed of the decision at a meeting last week. Deputy Healy-Rae, who previously worked in the factory when it operated as Kenmare Salmon, says he is deeply upset for workers and management at the factory.

KLAWS would like to say a big ‘thank you’ to all those people who gave money to KLAWS on our street collection day recently, we raised over €400. And another big ‘thank you’ to Maureen McCarthy, Harbour View B & B, Dawros, for her massive donation of household goods for our shop. With regards to the shop, you will be pleased to know that we will be opening up our new premises as soon as possible subject to any ‘hiccups’. KLAWS held its well attended AGM on August 3rd at The Brook Lane Hotel. On the agenda was the reading of the minutes of the last AGM in 2015, the treasurer's report, the chairperson's report and the election of the committee; Kitty McNally, Chair; Trish Evans, Vice Chair; Lynda Kenny, Treasurer; Dee Fitzgerald, Vice Treasurer; Eithne Garvey, Secretary; Jackie Bradshaw, Vice Secretary and Denise Andrew, Media. The Chairpersons Report made it clear that KLAWS were pushing forward for Charity Status. KLAWS had a successful EGM where the new constitution was passed to enable us to move forward in respect of this. Kitty also told the members that since last years AGM KLAWS had rescued and rehomed 86 adult dogs, 30 puppies and 200 cats and kittens. She concluded that the oncoming year would, no doubt, be a challenging one. However, with the opening of our new shop, which has been sadly missed by members of the public, we could look forward to some exciting times as well. KLAWS would like to thank everyone, for continuing to support us, and once we know when the shop is opening, the public will be the first to know. We are looking forward to the day we can open our shop doors once again. If, in the meantime, you have any animal welfare issues please call our dedicated telephone number on 087 970 4480 and we will endeavour to help you.

All voluntary organisations need volunteers, and organisations like Kenmare Family simply couldn’t exist without them! At the moment our service has volunteers involved at all levels from management & steering committees down to cleaning and caretaking, many people are needed to run such a service being offered to the public. Parent & Toddler group volunteers set up for the group, meet and greet parents and children, do sign in and distribute information where applicable. They help with activities and clean up at the end of the group. Volunteers with particular skills run programs at Kenmare Family Centre like Arts & Crafts, Chess club, Story-telling, face painting. And of course there are those reliable volunteers who help with coffee mornings, bag packing and other fundraising activities. Volunteers on Kenmare Family Centre steering group meet about once every 6 weeks to input into the work of the centre. They give ideas, opinions and keep the family centre in touch with the real needs of the people of the Greater Kenmare area. Their ‘on the ground’ input is invaluable. Kenmare Family Centre is managed by Kenmare Community Care who are all volunteers from the community. These people are committed, caring, dedicated & reliable people who work behind the scenes to make our town of Kenmare a happier place for all to live in. “Volunteers are seldom paid; not because they are worthless, but because they are priceless!” A big thank you to all volunteer currently involved in the running of Kenmare Family Centre. To get in touch, contact us on 087 7086641 / 064 6642790 / kenmarecommunitycare@gmail.com or find Kenmare Family Centre on Facebook.

Gone Fishing With

John O’Hare

As one gets older, excepting a few lucky ones, your senses tend to weaken. In my case once I could hear a pin drop but now it would have to be an ESB pole hitting the ground! I blame the loss of hearing on my time in the FGA (local defence force) mortar (60mm) squad and kangoing walls to bury electrical cables from sight. It does not matter what the cause was, the case is that my hearing is not so good anymore. A couple of weeks ago at a funeral in Glenflesk I met a man that I had not seen for a long time, and we struck up a conversation. It transpired as we were talking that his hearing was as bad as mine. For the sake of something to say, and as the weather was mild and humid, I started to talk about wild field mushrooms and how, years ago, they were everywhere and now you could not find them for love nor money. I also put forward my idea that artificial manures had destroyed the pastures they grew in. I could see he was listening carefully to what I was saying. “Are there any of them around Kenmare atall,” he asked. “Not that I know of, “I replied, “I think around 1980 was the last time I saw them in large numbers.” “As long ago as that?” he asked “Well, I can tell you that there is no shortage of them up here, they were all over the place this morning as I was leaving for this funeral.” “If that is the case, do you want to keep them for yourself because if not I will call on my way home for some of them.” “What do you want to bring them home with you for?” he asked in great surprise. “Now then,” I said, “Cooking in butter with a pinch of salt, they are absolutely beautiful, you would eat your fingers off after them.” The look of surprise on his face had now given way to total astonishment. All the time I was talking about mushrooms, he was talking about midges!

The two of us stated laughing at our mix up, I am sure the people at the funeral must have said we were going soft in the head. The fishing is great at the moment, with huge catches of mackerel from shore and boat on either side of the bay, some being being caught off The Sound Bridge. The tourists love fishing for them. The same story stands for pollock, one parent told me how his young son, who was fishing with him near Dursey Head off the shore, hooked and landed a monster pollock of 15lbs. He kept playing him even though he got stuck in the seaweed and had to force him in. I can tell you that young lad was as proud as punch with photographs to prove his big catch. A few nice sea bass have also been accounted for both close to town and down at Castlecove, Derrynane and Waterville. Those going out in boats have had excellent sport fishing in the deep waters near the mouth of the bay. The trout fishing has been really good. I know a good many of them were not in great condition but you could put them back to fight another day, this didn’t stop you from having an enjoyable time out on the lakes. The Juvenile Competitions on Looscaunagh had a big turn out of young anglers and some grand bags of trout were handed up for the weigh in. I am sure everyone young and old enjoyed themselves. The only blot on the anglers horizon is the slack number of salmon and sea trout being caught. I know weather conditions are not ideal for them to run, but one would expect better catches just the same. Things could change very quickly and maybe the seasons end, which is not far off now, will end with a flourish. Now for the bad news, Inland Fisheries Ireland who manage locally two stocked lakes (rainbow trout) at Barfinnihy and Lough Fada have contacted me to say they may not operate the lakes next year, due in no small part to financial restraints. This is serious as these lakes were wonderful places for both tourist and locals to fish. They were always sure of an enjoyable and successful day out as rainbows are a powerful and free rising fish. It is sad to think that just a short few years ago there were 14 stocked lakes in the South West area, now reduced to 4, and by next year possible none. What are out tourist associations doing? These lakes were a great attraction for tourists because, as I say, even amateurs catch the fish. Now there will be no more.

Kenmare & District Garden Club 10 | Kenmare News

The so-called summer is flying by and as we head into Autumn, the Club is ready to begin its evening meetings starting on Thursday September 1st at 7.30pm at Gateway. Please note that this is a week earlier than advertised in our Programme. Our speaker will be Deborah Begley whose garden, Terra Nova, many members will have visited and her topic will be ‘Gardening in the Golden Vale: Muck and Magic’. That sounds intriguing and afterwards there will be a short quiz Oonagh Pierce looking stunning with prizes, so no going to sleep in at the recent Kenmare Debs the back row! Look forward to pic Mary O'Neill seeing you there. Staff and Service-Users of Fiachne Day Centre would like to thank Donald Lynch for his donation of topsoil and free delivery of same to their Fiachne Garden Project. The garden includes a poly tunnel, as well as outdoor beds. Thanks to Gardening tutor Sarah O'Brien who continues to instil confidence with gardening skills. As always, they are forever grateful to Michael, Thomas and Kieran at The Adult Education Centre who erected their tunnel for them.....it didn't budge an inch during the storms of the past winter! They would also like to thank Maggie O'Sullivan Graham, Paula Tiller and Dave Kingerlee for their ongoing fabulous work in Literacy Skills and Personal Development and they look forward to recommencing these classes in the Autumn. And also a big welcome to Art Tutor, Catriona Davies. A big thank you to Kenmare Mental Health Association who continue to finance many activities at Fiachne Day Centre: art tutor, gardening tutor, personal development tutor, social outings and holidays for clients. The financial contributions made by Kenmare Mental Health Association to Fiachne Day Centre greatly enhance the service that is provided and for that staff, service-users and families are extremely grateful. As the ‘Full Circle’ exhibition at the Carnegie Arts Centre has come to an end, I am reflecting on what has been and what has yet to come. As Etienne Muller, who gave a wonderful insightful talk during the opening night, suggested, maybe the word is not ‘circle’ but ‘spiral’. All my creative adventures are the sum of what has come before. Photographs are taken in my garden. The images make it into my books, or are an inspiration for sculptures or tapestries. These works make it out into the world, into other people’s homes and hearts. The responses to the works find a place in my heart. The funds raised from sales make it possible to create new work. And so the circle - or spiral - goes. I would like to thank the gallery for providing this opportunity, Joop and Adrian Duyn for practical support, John R. for financial assistance, and Mariela Martin for setting up and taking down the exhibition. Most for all, a big thank you to the exhibition visitors for their kind comments and purchasing of works, and Kenmare news for highlighting the event. See www.corinaduyn.com for books, art and new creative adventures. My deepest gratitude. Corina Duyn

Mindfulness is learning to direct our attention to our experience as it unfolds, with openminded curiosity, kindness and acceptance. Rather than worrying about what has happened or might happen it trains us to explore and respond skilfully, rather than react, to whatever is happening right now, whether we like it or not. Learning to say YES to exploring everything, thoughts, emotions, sensations, and mental processes can lead to an inner knowing how to work with and cope with stressful situations, improve self esteem, to find more ease and contentment in all of life. In recent years research in neuroscience has made compelling discoveries about the brain’s capacity to grow and change, including evidence that mindfulness helps to increase our ability to be more positive and

creative. Researchers at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard University has shown, using MRI brain scanning technology, that eight weeks of MBSR training leads to the thickening of different regions of the brain associated with learning and memory, emotion regulation, the sense of self and perspective taking. They also found that areas associated with stress and anxiety were thinner after the course. Darina is a qualified Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction Trainer and yoga teacher. She gives weekly Yoga classes ranging from beginners to advanced. She graduated from the Institute of Mindfulness Based Approaches and offers 8-week MBSR (Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction) course in a purpose built Geodesic Dome. Blackwater Sports took place in Old Dromore Sportsfield on Sunday July 17th and this year was one of biggest and most successful yet. 83 children registered and enjoyed a great day of varied events from the fancy dress and lucky dip to novelty events like egg & spoon, wheelbarrow race, sack race, 3 legged race, penalty shoot out, puck out and races for all age groups including a relay race. There was also a men’s race and a women’s race, as well as Adult & Child Events. The baking competition saw a big entry from both adults and children and special thanks to Viv Shaw for judging this year’s competition. Ann O’Sullivan was the winner in the adult section with a beautiful Kiwi Cake. First in the children's section were Adele and Kayleigh O'Sullivan Nash with a Sponge Cake. This year a new competition was added to find Blackwater’s Top Hat, a novelty hat competition. The winner in the adult section was The Wild Atlantic Way by Kitty Doyle and in the Children’s Category the winner was Emily McCloskey with Templenoe Abú, a hat based on the Templenoe All Ireland Junior win earlier this year. Special thanks to Peggy Healy & Councillor Dan McCarthy for judging the hats. Peggy also judged the Fancy Dress. A big thanks to everyone who supported the event, sponsored raffle prizes etc, to everyone who helped on the day to prepare the field, set up the tent, tables etc, everyone who helped with catering and especially to Timothy Clifford and the members of Templenoe GAA Club who ran the sporting events on the day.

The Late Fr Laurence Kelly RIP The late Fr Laurence Kelly gave great service to the Catholic Church and to the communities he served since first becoming ordained on 5th June 1955. He worked diligently in Farnworth, Tousist, Eyries, Bothar Bui, Tralee, Dingle, Dundalk, Derrinagree, Castlemaine, Castlegregory and was also parish priest in Kilgarvan from 1999-2008. He was a sincerely dedicated priest and was my neighbor for many years and I always enjoyed his thoughtful and intelligent conversations. He was really a man determined to serve in a very hardworking and ordinary way his parishioners and see after their needs. Indeed it is one of the things that were said about Fr Kelly that when he would move to a new parish or community he would undertake insuring to call to every house and getting to know everyone as he saw that as a very important way of understanding the needs of the people he was working with. May he rest in peace.

Fisheries I am at present questioning the Minister as I believe that there seems to be a move by the Inland Fisheries Board to stop and exit the production of trout which were being used to stock our many lakes throughout the Country. In our own catchment area we have a number of lakes which thankfully were being stocked and very well maintained by our local fisheries officers but unfortunately I believe that management seems to be changing this policy at present. This would be wrong because it would be an outrage to think of our beautiful lakes with no trout in them. I will pursue this matter to the best of my ability. Kilgarvan Show I congratulate Helen O’Sullivan, the Chairperson of the Kilgarvan Show Committee and all her hardworking committee for the great show that they held on 31st July

2016. We were very fortunate that the weather was great for the day and a great crowd attended. The official opening was performed by Minister Michael Creed and everyone was glad that he attended and acknowledged how important the Kilgarvan Show is and the standing that it has not just in Kerry, but in the Country.

Passports With holiday in full swing if you are due to travel in the near future and discover that your passport is out of date, contact my office on 01-6183363 Jackie or 064-6685782 Martina and we will be only be too glad to assist you. There currently is a 6-8 week waiting list for new passport applications. I would urge you to contact my office before submitting any new application.

Kerry Football Teams First of all I want to congratulate the Kerry Junior team on their outstanding victory over Mayo in Croke Park 218 to 2-11. I want to particularly congratulate Adrian Spillane, Dara O’Sé, Patrick Clifford, Kieran Fitzgibbon and Kevin O’Sullivan all from our local district who were part of this team, well done lads. Also, I would like to give big congratulations to the Kerry Minor Team on reaching yet another All-Ireland Semi Final after beating Derry 1-24 to 2-10 and that’s no small thanks to our very own Seán O’Shea with an outstanding display from the captain on the day with a tally of 1-6. I wish him every success in the upcoming match against Kildare and I have no doubt we will see Seán on the steps of the Hogan Stand come September. Last but not least, I want to wish both Stephen O’Brien and Tadgh Morley all the very best in their upcoming All Ireland Semi Final against Dublin on the 28th of August in Croke Park. A lot of people are writing off this Kerry team, but I

Town & Village Renewal Scheme for Rural Ireland Minister Heather Humphrey’s announced that €10 million will be made available to Local Authorities this year to support the regeneration of rural towns and villages across Ireland. Total funding of €10 million in Capital funding will be provided in 2016. An allocation of €380,00 will be made available in each of the 26 counties for the Town and Village Renewal projects. There are two categories of eligible Towns/Villages; Category 1: Towns/Villages with a population of <5,000. Category 2: Towns with a population of 5,000-10,000. Funding will be allocated to Local Authorities to meet up to 85% of the total cost of each project. Each county can apply for grants for up to 8 separate towns/village projects and submit outline plans to the Department in September for approval. To ensure a focus on smaller towns/villages, at least 50% of the project proposals and at least 50% of the value of funding sought at county level should be for Category 1 towns/villages (<5,000 population). A maximum of two Category 2 town proposals will be funded for each county under this Phase of the scheme. For further details with regard to this scheme you can contact my office and we will be only too glad to assist you. While I welcome this scheme because it was something I was looking for a long time and I worked hard to get it into the Programme for Government but more funds should be put into it to make it have a meaningful effect to the projects it will assist.

Team Tom Crean - Tom Crean’s grandaughter, two great gran South Georgia Centenary Traverse September 2016.

Aileen d’Arcy tells us about her forthcoming expedition, and what it means to the memory of her Grandfather and to Kenmare...

As the date of our Expedition to South Georgia in September is fast approaching, I thought it would be nice to let people know exactly what we are doing and why. Since a child growing up in Tralee, I was fascinated by the pictures and memorabilia that adorned our sitting room walls. Why did my grandfather, from a poor farming family and small village in Annascaul, County Kerry, join the Royal Navy at the young age of 15years and take part in three expeditions to the Antarctic? He played a prominent role in all three expeditions and was awarded the Royal Albert Medal for saving Officer Evans life and Polar Medals. Unfortunately, when he retired in 1920 due to the political climate he did not speak of his Royal Navy years and even travelled to Tralee to collect his Navy pension. Besides that, he seemed like a quiet, unassuming man and had closed that chapter of his life. His brother Cornelius was a member of the R.I.C. and he was shot dead from his bike along with two more as they cycled home from work in Ballinaspittle. Tom himself was dragged out of his home and pub, The South Pole Inn, and held at gun point whilst the Black & Tans rummaged through searching for drink and possible Republican connections because his wife Nell went to Thomas Ashe’s funeral. My grandmother Nell was pregnant and as a result of the fright and rough handling she received she blamed this on Katie being born sickly. It was only when they found proof of his involvement in the Royal Navy that they apologized and left. Gran brought Katie to Lourdes years later and her rosary beads disintegrated at the altar. She asked her Parish Priest and he said to offer up whatever she was praying for. She was praying for Katie to get better. She died, aged 4 years on the 8th December the Feast of the Immaculate Conception. Tom build her tomb in Ballynacourty and himself and my grandmother are buried there.

We were delighted when political journalist Michael Smith contacted my Mam and Aunty Mary whilst writing the book ‘Unsung Hero’ and subsequently the child’s book ‘Iceman’. I feel so proud that this is on the school curriculum, young children come into the restaurant looking at the photos and full of awe for this giant of a man. I think it’s great that he’s a Kerryman first and foremost and then an Irishman and it makes it more tangible for them when they can relate to someone’s granddad. I tell them they can achieve anything they want in life, look at Tom Crean, he came from a poor background, had to borrow a suit of clothes and money to head off at 15years and his achievements.

So for years I was wondering how could I honour my grandfather and keep his spirit alive? I often thought of an expedition but with family and work and the cost, it was quickly dismissed. Since this is the last centenary of Tom’s three expeditions I decided I had to go and honour

him. Tom went on three expeditions, two with Scott and one with Shackleton. Shackleton’s ship ‘The Endurance’ got stuck in the ice and finally crushed. Having lived on ice floes, their only hope of survival was to sail in three life boats to Elephant Island. They had to avoid icebergs, killer whales and rough seas but eventually made landfall on Elephant Island. After a few days, and some food and rehydration, Shackleton, Crean, McCarthy (Irish), Worsley, McNish and Vincent set sail for South Georgia in an open life boat 22.5’ long, called the James Caird in the ferocious Southern Ocean for a distance of 800 miles. It was a miracle they survived, a huge liner sank some miles away. The voyage of the James Caird is ranked as one of the greatest boat journeys ever accomplished. They landed on the south side as it was too risky to head for the north, they then had to traverse unchartered terriority. So they climbed, descended, back tracked, changed route, coiled their rope together and held tight to skid down the mountain and eventually heard the siren of the whaling station and knew they were near civilization. The children ran away in fear and the whalers couldn’t believe anyone could come from the other side of the island. They rescued the other three and 4 months later rescued the 22 men. No life was lost. Last year I asked my two sons Cian and Morgan and my partner Bill to come with me to follow in Tom’s footsteps, to get a sense of what he experienced and stand where he once stood. In September, we sail in a 50’ boat Pelagic from Stanley in the Falklands, approximately 800 miles for 4 days, to South Georgia. We felt that this is the closest we would get to his journey albeit a lot more comfortable and hopefully safer. We completed a two day competency sailing course recently, so now I know port from starboard, man over board procedure and lots more. We will have two crew on board but will have to help out. I spoke with Mike O’Shea, Dingle who attempted it last year in mid October but failed due to open crevasses. He told me the return boat journey took 9 days the conditions were so bad, he wanted to die. So here’s hoping we’ll be lucky with the weather. On arrival in South Georgia, we have time to acclimatise, to practice our ski-touring, putting up and down tents, checking for avalanches and crevasses and observing the wild life. When our guides arrive Stephen Venables and Craig Jones we will traverse. We ski tour over Crean Glacier (2,000m), past Crean lake and we will descend through the waterfall that they did just before their arrival in the whaling station. Then we sail home and hopefully it won’t take as long as Mike’s. We have been preparing for this since last year. In the Macgillycuddy Reeks, out on Mangerton in the snow doing courses with Nathan Kingerlee of Outdoors Ireland. A quick stroll up Peakeen before Christmas proved a bit longer than expected as the clouds came down and we had no visibility. Just made it back in time to cook for a Christmas party.

dsons and Bill Sheppard follow in Grandfather’s footsteps!

We went to Poland in Jan/Feb to Zagapone to train in the Tatra mountains, to improve our skiing and learn ski-touring and do avalanche and crevasse courses (far more reasonable than Europe). This is a beautiful place for skiing in the winter or hiking in the summer. If anyone wants to learn to ski I would highly recommend Whiteside Holidays, Gareth Nichols.

Back to Kenmare, preparations for our launch on 9th April. Bill put a front axle on his sailing trailer and attached the sledge from the restaurant. I must say I had my doubts when I saw the wheels as I worked on ‘bogeys’ (go karts) with my brothers and we always had wheels from old prams. We worked with Torc Brewery, Killarney for a year, to create a recipe for a red ale, which would have been popular in my grandfather’s time. We loaded the sledge at 5am with cases of our Expedition Ale. We manhandled it into Killarney, over to INEC, up to Galway’s Bridge and over the Butter Road, the morning was spectacular; the Lakes of Killarney were like mirrors reflecting the snowcapped Macgillycuddy Reeks. There were herds of deer and wild goats by the lakes and by the Butter Road. Thanks to Cllr Dan McCarthy and his sister Mary O’Leary for coming across the Butter Road on the quad to take photographs and thanks also to Pat O’Sullivan, Kilkeana who assisted on his quad. Back on the road, Cian and Morgan sat into the van and Bill and I bombed it down Kilmurry hill, praying we wouldn’t meet any cars, mind you Bill had invented a brake which was a tyre tied on to the cart that he would step onto if required. We were escorted up Main Street by the Gardai, flashing light and siren (I was never so happy to see the squad car and flashing lights!). At 1pm, which was a hundred years to the hour that Shackleton launched the three life boats into the open seas, we launched the Expedition to South Georgia, our Expedition Ale and our crowdfunding.

Next I had signed Team Tom Crean up for the Ring of Beara 140k cycle. Out came my pristine bike from Brian Finnegan. We set off the first day full of enthusiasm and ‘teaspach’ to Sneem. On the home straight, on the Presbytery hill in Dromnevane, I feared I’d start slipping down to O’Connor’s Funeral Home but I kept going and even managed by own drive, mind you I was like Dart Vader. Sitting down for the rest of the week was a bit of a challenge. Many good Tuesdays (my day off) ensued and subsequent autopsies and training schedules discussed with Bernie ‘Shrubs’ in Crowley’s. The last long cycle before the event was to Eyeries but I convinced Bill, as it was a fine day we’d keep going to Allihies, I was economical with the route information. Not only that but not sure of the route took a side road that had 4 vicious hills, I remarked after wards that the 3 hills were tough but was promptly reminded that there were 4! Approaching Allihies, I was afraid of my life that all ‘eating houses’ would be closed and had visions of myself buying a sliced pan and the makings of a sandwich but we had a wonderful lunch in O’Neill’s Bar. So then back on the bike to Kenmare. The rain closed in from Dawros so by town I retired for refreshments. Fair dues to Bill he cycled up for the car and dry clothes.

End of cycling and up the mountains, a few trips up Carrantuohill and around the Reeks. June 18th we lead off the ‘The Endurance Walk’ (19 miles) at the Tom Crean Festival, Annascaul. We were bused back beyond Dingle to the start of the route to Brandon by the stations. The morning was glorious, locals pointed out the ‘silver road’ built by Star Wars and different landmarks. Unfortunately, the rain started and the clouds closed in. A fast pace was maintained. After four hours we stopped at Conor Pass for refreshments and was told our guide would be leaving in 15 minutes for Annascaul. Off we headed but visibility was very poor, a group of 20 of us ended up wandering around with our guide trying to find the way. Eventually, we found the route and arrived in Annascaul, drenched wet, frozen, thirsty and starved…. good training! We later found out we did almost 25 miles caused by our detour around Conor Pass. Since then it’s been a combination of hiking and tyre pulling on Inch Beach but mostly up Goulane or Kilmurry. Unfortunately, we were on Carrantuohill the day the man lost his life. We were just coming down ‘Heavenly Gate’ and a pal heard shouting, a man ran past us with a walkie talkie. Only for some people near the mountain rescue hut, witnessing his fall down ‘Howling Ridge’, I don’t think he would ever have been found as he was on his own and didn’t have I.D. R.I.P.

Aidan Dooley is performing the ‘Tom Crean One Man Show’ in the Kenmare Bay Hotel on Sunday 18th September at 8pm. This is a wonderful show and among his many accolades is the Edinburgh and New York Fringe First Winner. He is only doing two concerts this year in Ireland. Thanks very much to Aidan who is travelling from the UK and to the Kenmare Bay who have very generously made their function room available to us. This is a fundraiser for our expedition and we would really appreciate your support, not to mind that it’s a brilliant show. For tickets (€20) please call to Tom Crean Fish & Wine Restaurant, Main Street, or phone 064-6641589.

I hope our expedition will raise the profile of Kenmare and help benefit the town. We have featured in many newspapers, Kerry radio, James Caird Society newsletter. Nationwide are filming the end of the month and we will also be on national radio. As you can imagine this is a very expensive expedition and all donations no matter how small would be greatly appreciated. If you would like to help keep the spirit of Tom Crean alive and support our expedition you can donate in the A.I.B. Kenmare, account – 09256037 sort code 96-63-24 or on line https://gogetfunding.com/tom-creanfamily-expedition/ Extra funds raised will be donated to St. Vincent de Paul. Lastly a big thank you to all my friends, family and support from the people of Kenmare and beyond that have helped me bring this to fruition. I’m sure we’ll have lots of stories and photographs to share on our return. Aileen

How to treat warts and verrucas

with Christine Bender-Pototzki

Warts and verrucas are small excessive growths of skin caused by a certain type of virus. They are typically found on the hands, feet and knees. Warts are very common amongst children of school age. It is possible to get warts from others or they can spread from one part of your body to another as they are contagious and usually enter the body in an area of broken skin. Warts and Verrucas may disappear on their own without treatment after a few months, but can also last for years and may even reoccur after successful treatment. Do not attempt to remove a wart yourself by burning, cutting, tearing, picking or any other method. Safe and effective over-the- counter medications are available from your pharmacist to remove warts. However, never use these medications on your face or genitals. Warts on the face and genitals need to be treated by your doctor. Over-the-counter treatment for common skin warts has long been based on the use of products containing salicylic acid. It is available as drops, gels, pads and plasters. Salicylic acid is a keratolytic medication which means it dissolves the protein (keratin) which makes up most of both the wart and the thick layer of dead skin that often tops it. Using those products you should notice an improvement within one to two weeks, but for maximum effect continue for four to six weeks or even longer. Alternatively there are over-the-counter sprays available that freeze warts at a temperature of minus 70F. This compares with the liquid nitrogen used by most dermatologists, which is considerably colder, minus 320F. Also this type of treatment requires patience and a couple of applications of the spray might be needed. Eventually, the freezing method creates a blister between the wart and the epidermal layer, after which the wart and surrounding dead skin falls off by itself. A popular alternative medicine that has been gaining support in recent years in treating warts is Thuja Occidentalis. Homoeopaths generally use a topical compound containing Thuja, but tablets are also available. If you require any further information and advice about warts and verrucas call into McSweeney Pharmacy and we will be more than happy to answer any question you may have. However, call for an appointment with you doctor if there are signs of infection like bleeding, red streaking, pus or discharge or if you have pain associated with the wart. You also need to see your GP if you have diabetes or a weakened immune system and have developed warts. Your McSweeney pharmacist, Christine Bender-Pototzki

McCarthy ....Reports

Health. During the summer season the numbers of people visiting the locality grows vastly but however the level of ambulance cover remains the same as during the winter time. At the recent county council meeting I put forward a motion which called on the HSE to locate an extra emergency ambulance in the county. In the recent years there have been cuts to respite care hours, I have highlighted this issue by asking that the HSE increase respite care hours as I feel that these individuals are the most vulnerable groups in our society and it is imperative that the services are put in place to meet the needs of these people. Rowing. Congratulations Georgia O’Brien on her recent achievements rowing in the Irish team and best wishes in the future. Well done also to the organisers of both Kenmare and Templenoe regattas which were a huge success. Tidy towns. Well done to all who are involved in the tidy towns committee, I must say Kenmare town and surrounding areas are looking absolutely tremendous which is due to the hard work and dedication of each of the members. GAA. Congratulations to the Kerry Junior team who won the All-Ireland, Kenmare-Kilgarvan U16 hurlers who won the county final and also to the members of the U16 Kerry ladies team who were also all Ireland winners recently. Kilgarvan Show. The annual Kilgarvan show was a great success congratulations and well done to all involved, best wishes in the future. Kenmare Drag hunt: This was the 99th year of the Kenmare drag hunt which has grown strength over the years, attracting competitors from south Kerry, Cork City and Cork County. Congratulations to Johnny Cronin from Ballinskelligs who won this year’s drag hunt and well done to all the organisers of this event. As a member of the Kenmare club I would like to acknowledge the dedicated hard work that the late treasurer for over 70 years Roddy O’Donoghue had put in to organising this event throughout the years. Next year the club will be celebrating its 100th drag hunt in Kenmare. The club would like to thank farmers, landowners and those who supported this through the years without their co-operation this event would not be celebrating its 100th year in 2017. 15th August. The tradition of the 15th August fair day continues to attract visitors from all over the country and beyond. Hope everyone enjoyed the day. Thank you to Kerry county council members who helped get the town cleaned up and back in business again. Clinics. I am available everyday throughout the week in Kenmare Mart. I also hold clinics in south and west Kerry throughout the month. Cllr Dan McCarthy, Kilcurrane East, Co.Kerry. 087-6846513/ 0872224411 (work number)

Back to school costs 2016

Research undertaken in June 2016 by the Irish League of Credit Union indicated that back to school costs negatively impact 26% of household bill payments with 13% of parents saying they will have to sacrifice spending on food to cover these costs. School associated costs have increased year on year from 2012 with overall spend for primary children on average is €967 per year per child and secondary €1,474 On average primary school parents are spending €145 on uniforms per child, secondary school parents spending €234 per child 31% of parents find themselves in debt covering back to school costs, borrowing an average of €357 In 2016 - 60% of parents will shop online for back to school items, up significantly from 47% in 2015 79% parents expected to make ‘voluntary contribution to school averaging €118 per child, up from €112 in 2015 37% of parents feel under pressure to buy branded school supplies, down from 42% in 2015, pressure more evident in secondary school parents. Only 14% % of parents eligible for back-to-school allowance believe the back to school allowance is sufficient to cover school costs. Speaking about the research, Helen Courtney Power, Business Development Officer with Killarney Credit Union said “we are very aware of the increased costs that families are facing when returning children to school after the holidays, we recommend that you plan early by making out a budget, shopping for deals in local retailers and avoid door step credit at all costs. We offer personal micro credit loans for smaller amounts which can be repaid through the household budget scheme or you can also look at our standard education loans for members” she concluded.

WET, WET WET !..Well the weather men did promise us a heat wave , yellow weather heat warnings…but no wave came, just a ripple and then the rains came back. Not very good weather for gardening. Every job takes twice as long and the garden is beginning to look tired from being washed out and lack of sunshine and heat. But there is still time for it to pick up before autumn arrives. The wet summer has been very good for growth in the garden but not very good for flowering plants. The constant rain has made flowers go soggy very quickly and the cooler than normal nights has encouraged a lot of moulds and other diseases 1. The above average rain has been responsible for above average grass growth this year but it has also been hard to get the grass cut. As a result the grass is perhaps a little taller than most summers which has encouraged moss growth. Moss killers can still be used and fertilizer applied to give the grass a boost going into the Autumn. If we do get a settled period of dry weather try and cut the grass down fairly low as this will help expose the moss and may dry up quicker. This low grass will then lead to a more uniform appearance over winter. If you have any areas in the lawn that need re seeding…now is a good time to do it as the seed will germinate fairly quickly in the wet and warm conditions of late summer. 2. Flowers in the hanging baskets and window boxes have suffered from the wet conditions and would need deadheading whenever possible. This involves removing the flower heads that have finished flowering to keep a neat appearance and prevent them from making other leaves and buds going mouldy ! Apply fertilizer in a liquid feed when you can to act as a pick-me-up for the plants that are feeling sad and off colour after the poor summer. This will help them flower away well into the autumn. 3. Replanting patio containers for the autumn can start from now on, especially if the summer plants are too straggly to recover. Large containers can be replanted by a mixture of shrubs or just a large

THE WILLOWFIELD WAY !

sized ‘Garden Mum’ ( Chrysanthenum) will do the job on its own and will stay in flower until first frosts. Large Bizzy Lizzy can also be used as an instant fix to provide colour for the rest of the summer season. Summer heathers will be available by the end of the month which will provide colour into early winter. Pansy and Viola will also be available soon that can be used for adding colour to existing containers or for new arrangements. From next month it will be time to start planting up a range of spring flowering bulbs that you can plant at the same time as planting up autumn/winter containers. 4. Shrubs in the garden have been enjoying the adequate supply of water this summer and have grown happily ! If any have grown too much, now is a good time to carry out a trim as they still have time to shoot again and make a small amount of growth before the year is out. Don’t prune any of the spring flowering shrubs as they will lose their flower buds that have developed on the branches during the summer. Evergreen hedges like Laurel and Griselinia should also be trimmed by the end of the month . 5. Summer heathers are beginning to put on a god show at the moment and will stay in flower right into October. As well as planting in the ground , they can also be used in window boxes or any type of patio container. The only limiting factors

about these summer heathers is that they are varieties of Calluna which can only be grown in acid ( peaty ) soil, so for a container you can use a special type of compost called Ericaceous Compost in which they can be planted. In tubs and window boxes they can be planted with a dwarf conifer and trailing ivy to make an attractive arrangement. 6. Trim back straggly growth and old flower heads of alpine plants to encourage strong short growth for next spring’s flowers to ‘spring’ from. 7. Herbaceous perennials at this time of year are getting very tall and will need supporting so their heavy flower heads wont collapse in wet and windy weather. Support them individually with bamboo canes or in groups with net supports. Keep an eye out for slug attacks during the last few weeks of summer and apply some slug pellets if you see holes appearing in the leaves. By keeping the slug population under control now it will help keep the numbers under control next spring. 8.In the vege garden keep on top of harvesting crops which have reached maturity and remove plant debris from the growing beds to prevent safe houses for bugs and slugs. Tidy up runners of strawberries so they don’t end up growing everywhere. 9. To add an extra splash of colour to your garden going into the dull autumn and winter months consider painting your garden furniture or garden shed with one of the coloured Ronseal, Sadolin or Fence Life wood preservatives. Timber furniture and fences dry out very quickly at this time of year and will definitely benefit from a preservative/treatment now and by choosing a different tint it can certainly brighten up a corner of your garden. 10. TIME OUT! Sit back and enjoy the last few weeks of summer if the sun ever comes out again! or drop into Willowfield to see what new plants we have had coming in recently, always something new! See you there. Simon

Future is glowing for Bright Sparks!

Bright Sparks staff, Sinead, Miriam and Leonie with the Smart Start award

This year Bright Sparks Montessori became one of only eight preschools in Kerry to be accredited as a Healthy Ireland Smart Start Health Promoting Preschool. The Smart Start programme covers 6 areas of health promotion; Oral Health, Personal Hygiene, Nutrition, Health & Safety, Physical Activity and Emotional Well-Being. Smart Start is a very holistic approach to developing positive attitudes towards health and wellbeing and where better to start than with our preschool children. The children also took part in the annual toddle for Barnardos this year as they have done for the past 10 years on the 19th May. This year however, it was decided to climb a hill as part of the toddle in memory of Evan O'Sullivan and split the proceeds between Barnardos and The Jack & Jill Foundation. The children, teachers and their families headed to the Bonane Heritage Park and made it all the way to the top where they left off balloons and enjoyed a picnic. It was a great day and the children raised an amazing €1,900 which was shared equally between these two very deserving charities. We would like to thank Patsy O'Sullivan for all his help and the Bonane Heritage Park committee for allowing us to use their fantastic venue.

We had 35 children graduate from Bright Sparks this June and we wish them all the best as they move on to their next adventure.

Did you know that 27 people die of heart attack in Ireland every day? Heartwave Cardio Screening is returning to Kenmare with the revolutionary Bpro pulse wave analysis device, providing affordable and accurate heart and artery screenings. The Bpro and A-Pulse Casp has been developed by Healthstats in Singapore and can calculate a person’s central aortic systolic pressure (CASP) (blood pressure closest to the heart) accurately and noninvasively. The A-Pulse has been validated in clinical trials to have an accuracy of 99.17%, as compared to the angiogram. The BPro Cardio Pulse-Wave screening measures the aortic pressure as well as the flexibility of your arteries. Screenings are carried out by a health stats certified technician and a full printout of the results are given on the day which can be brought back to your own GP or cardiologist if necessary. The procedure is non-invasive and completely pain-free. The cost of an individual BPro test is €50 per adult with a 10% discount (€90) for a couple. There is also a 20% discount for groups of 12 or more people e.g. Sports Clubs, Business Screening etc. Heartfelt Cardio Screening will bring the Bpro to the Brook Lane Hotel in Kenmare on the following dates; Thursday 25th August, Thursday 8th September, Thursday 22nd September and Thursday 6th October Appointments are essential and are available from 10.45am until late. Kerry Juniors, Patrick Clifford, Dara O'Shea, Kieran Fitzgibbon, Kevin O'Sullivan and Adrian Spillane

Kerry Juniors. Huge congratulations to all those from Kenmare and Templenoe who spurred the Kerry Juniors to a two-in-row with victory over Mayo in Croke Park. Kevin O'Sullivan, Kieran Fitzgibbon and Dara O'Shea are Shamrocks and Adrian Spillane, Patrick Clifford the Templenoe contingent (Stephen O'Sullivan and Kieran O'Neill were also involved in the campaign). Well done to all. Kerry Minors, ably led by Sean O'Shea are into an All Ireland semi final, where they will meet Kildare, to be followed by Kerry v Dublin, Stephen O'Brien and Templenoe's Tadgh Morley taking on the blues, both games on the 28th August - mouth-watering! Kenmare/Kilgarvan played Abbeydorney in the Final of the Lee Strand U16 County Hurling Championship in Austin Stack Park on Tuesday 2nd of August. We had already defeated Abbeydorney in the U16 Division 1 County League Final back in May and a close encounter was again anticipated. We started in whirlwind fashion with a goal in the second minute from full forward James McCarthy. We added a further three points from Donal O'Sullivan before Abbeydorney replied with three frees between the 8th and the 11th minute from Michael Slattery. Kenmare/Kilgarvan defended like trojans with Dan McCarthy rock solid at full back being ably assisted by Darragh O'Connor and Gary Randles before the latter had to go off with a sprained wrist after twenty minutes. Donal O'Sullivan in the meantime added two more points on to the score board before he struck for a superb goal. Kenmare/Kilgarvan added three more points Donal O'Sullivan again registering two scores one from play one from a free. Conor Lucey added a point to the tally to put his name on the scoreboard. Abbeydorney struck for a goal on the stroke of half time through wing forward Sean Holden. This left us

Kenmare Kilgarvan U16's

with an eight point interval lead of 2-8 to 1-3. Abbeydorney got off the blocks early in the second half and added two goals and two points in the first eleven minutes to tie the game.Their centre forward Michael Slattery was their main dangerman and he put Abbeydorney into a one point lead on the 12th minute. The Kenmare/Kilgarvan half backs Tommy Cronin, Liam Twomey and Cian O'Sullivan held a solid half back line before Donal O'Sullivan landed a free on the 14 th minute to level matters. Dan McCarthy when moved to midfield surged forward to land two further points from play. However Abbeydorney responded with two points, one from play and one from a free. Daniel Casey landed a point from play but again Abbeydorney responded with a point and tied up matters again. James McCarthy when moved to wing forward gathered on the fifty and soloed through their defence and booted home a match changing goal in the 58th minute. From the puckout Tommy Cronin won possession and fired over the insurance point. Daniel Casey won possession again from Abbeydorney's puck out and was fouled. Donal O'Sullivan converted the free to see Kenmare/Kilgarvan win with a margin of five points. The final score reading Kenmare/Kilgarvan 3-14 Abbeydorney 3-9. The panel for Kenmare/Kilgarvan were Gearóid Doyle, Darragh O'Connor, Liam Twomey,Gary Randles,Tommy Cronin,Dan Mc Carthy, Cian O'Sullivan, Daniel Casey, Jack Foley,Griffin Lynch Wharton,Donal O'Sullivan (Capt.),Cian Hanley, Conor Lucey,James Mc Carthy,Ronan Foley, Jack Maye, Dion Murphy, Darragh O' Brien, Pádraig Cronin, Kieran Kelleher and Séan Lucey. This was a fantastic team performance and The William Sweeney Trophy is heading south for the second year in a row .Winning the League and Championship double2016 is a just reward for this spirited bunch of players. Congratulations to the management team of John and Mickey Foley Flor O'Brien and Donal McCarthy. Management and players are truly keeping hurling alive and well in The Roughty Valley.

Kenmare's Sophie Daly (17) and her 11-year-old horse, Eicke II represented Ireland at the Junior Dressage European Championships in Spain last week. Seventy of Europe's best Junior dressage riders and horses attended the championship where they performed at a world-class level. Sophie and Eicke performed solidly for their first European Championship, receiving respectable scores in both tests. Sophie commented,"Representing Ireland has been my dream for as long as I remember but I never thought I'd get to represent Ireland at a European Championships. It really hasn't sunk in that I've made it this far but it has made all of the countless hours of training and travelling to competitions worth it. I'm really excited to see what the future holds!" Sophie trains with Tipperary-based Grand Prix rider, Sue Smallman, who noted this as a remarkable achievement in this difficult sport. She began her partnership with Eicke three years ago and together they climbed up the ranks from Novice level to International Junior Level. Sophie and Eicke represented Ireland at five international shows and achieved the European qualifying criteria in Hagen, Germany. They are now ranked within the top 100 junior dressage riders in the world. She said, "I am very lucky to have such a great horse. He really gave me his all at these championships and I couldn't be prouder of him. I am so grateful to have a very supportive team behind the scenes." Sophie was the only Irish Junior Rider selected by Horse Sport Ireland for this European Championship. She hopes to be selected to compete at the Europeans again next year at Young Rider level. In the meantime she will compete at the Dressage Ireland National Championships after having qualified in May.

Congratulations to our Kilgarvan/Kenmare U16 Hurlers for winning the County U16 Hurling Championship against a gallant Abbeydorney side. Earlier in the year, Kilgarvan/Kenmare won the U16 Division 1 Hurling League against the same opposition. The game started in a whirlwind fashion for Kilgarvan/Kenmare. They were up 1-03 to 0-01 after eight minutes, the goal coming from a great run by Donal O’Sullivan and strike leaving James McCarthy with the easiest of tap ins from the rebound, indeed Donal O’Sullivan would finish the game with 1-10 contributed to the score board. But this was a real team effort with the full back line of Gary Randles and Dan McCarthy outstanding with the Dan McCarthy striking the ball at will up the field. Liam Twomey was given the difficult job of marking Michael Slattery, a job he did very well. Indeed Liam Twomey was the only player capable of marking Michael Slattery as he proved already in the league final earlier in the year. Jack Foley

and Daniel Casey were well on top of midfield at this point with Daniel receiving a heavy knock earlier in the game. Donal O’Sullivan and Griffin Lynch Wharton were working tirelessly in half forward line. The score at half time was 2-08 to 1-03 with Gary Randles having to leave the field of play injured just before the interval. With the wind at their backs Abbeydorney were always going to come back in the second half, bit by bit they chipped away at the scoreboard. Donal O’Sullivan was now at mid field and Daniel Casey at centre forward. This move worked well with Donal getting onto an amount of ball and Daniel scoring a point and being fouled for two frees. Dan McCarthy burst up the field from centre back and scored a point. But in the last three minutes Abbeydorney had drawn level and then took the lead. Kilgarvan/Kenmare fought back to level the score and in a welter of excitement, James McCarthy who was operating now at the wing burst through and kicked the ball to the back of the net. Second time lucky for Kenmare Rowing and Boat Club Annual Regatta

Following disappointing news on July 24th that Kenmare Rowing and Boat Club Annual Regatta had to be cancelled due to choppy waters, proceedings got under way on Sunday last July 31st. Crews from Flesk Valley, Castletownbere and Fossa Rowing Clubs travelled for the day’s events. Racing began at 2p.m. with the Novice Girls’ Race where Kenmare A took gold and Kenmare B took silver. A great crowd gathered at the pier to watch the afternoon’s action. Georgia O’ Brien of Kenmare Rowing and Boat Club who won a silver medal for Ireland at the Home International Regatta in Cardiff on July 23rd gave a demonstration of rowing in her Single Scull. There was great excitement at the Annual Duck Race with Ellen Sheehan from Fossa Rowing Club succeeding in catching ‘Mrs Quack’. Masters of ceremonies for the afternoon

were Noel Crowley and Cllr. Dan McCarthy. The highlight of the day was the Senior Men’s Race with Castletownbere, Flesk Valley and two crews from Kenmare competing. It was a nail biting finish with Castletownbere winning Gold and Flesk Valley Silver and Kenmare (A) taking Bronze. Congratulations are extended to all who competed on the day. The club wishes to thank Fr. Tom Crean for attending and blessing the boats. We would also like to thank our sponsors, everyone who helped organise the regatta and all the volunteers on the day.

On July 23rd 2016, Georgia O’Brien of Kenmare Rowing and Boat Club competed in her first international event at The Home International Regatta in Cardiff. After her impressive performance at the National Rowing Championships in Cork, she got the call to represent Ireland. Georgia took silver for Ireland in the Women’s Single Scull just behind the British Champion from Scotland. Wales was 3rd and England 4th in this race. Georgia’s performance helped the Irish Junior Women’s Team secure Second Place in the event with England first, Scotland third and Wales fourth. This is a fantastic achievement for the Club with history being made as Georgia was the first member of Kenmare Rowing and Boat Club to represent Ireland in such a prestigious event. Her coaches Noel Casey and Georgia and her Danny O’ Sullivan deserve huge credit for her success. No1 fan

kenmare motoring Motor Premiums

Motor premiums were up 38.3pc in the year to July, according to inflation figures from the Central Statistics Office. Over the last three years, the average premium is up 70pc, according to a deeper analysis provided by the CSO. The ongoing rise in insurance costs was one of the main reasons that annual inflation hit 0.5pc, its highest level in three years. The rise in motor insurance costs means a premium that was €500 last year will now be around €190 dearer. Many drivers are being hit with even higher increases, especially if they have a claim, an older car, are young or have penalty points. Two of the largest insurers in the market, RSA and Aviva, warned last week that they expected premiums to keep going up this year. RSA said injury claims continued to rise and Aviva said it could not rule out more premiums increases as claims costs continued to be a serious challenge to it.

When I was in secondary school, in the mid-1980s, some maths genius guys in my grade started attending after-school classes in a new-fangled subject called ‘Informatics’. During recess, they were excitedly waving around paper covered in noughts and ones, and said they were learning to write computer programs. The rest of us looked at one another and went to play five-a-side. Many of our afternoons were taken up with travelling to a variety of public or university libraries, to carry out research for an essay, later for college papers or dissertations. We sometimes waited for weeks for a badly needed book currently lent to someone else, took pages and pages of hand-written notes, paid for photocopies and sometimes day passes to subscription libraries. When I started travelling to Ireland as a tourist, I would write to the German office of Tourism Ireland in Frankfurt, or return one if their many adverts in the German print media, where one would tick boxes of those publications one was interested in. They would then post stacks of accommodation listings, maps, brochures on horse riding, or hiking, or cultural sites – all free of charge to the potential tourist. Once the decision to travel was taken, I would then write to the relevant hotels or B&Bs, riding stables etc, to book my holiday. Alternatively, one would walk into a travel agency and book a package holiday, entirely at the agent’s mercy regarding the quality of accommodation and price. Taking a shine to an item of clothing or home decor in a magazine or on the telly, I would spend days and weeks searching for it in shops in my hometown. I would either eventually find what I was looking for, or do without it. How easy life has become since then. Carrying out research for school or work, we now generally just have to sit down at our computers and have a wealth of global, upto-date information at our finger tips. Before we go on holidays, we now access the trusty WWW and are able to view, compare and book flights, accommodation or activities in minutes, knowing pretty much what we’re letting ourselves in for thanks to detailed descriptions, photographs and customer reviews. If we can’t find a specific item we wish to buy in a shop in our area, there is a very good chance that we can order it from the other side of the country or even the world. Even small businesses now usually have websites through which billions of potential customers can purchase chocolate handcrafted in Bonane, or book a room in a B&B in Kenmare. When family members go and live abroad, communication is no longer restricted to a long awaited and much-cherished letter, we can now sent emails, photographs, even video clips, or meet them via Skype, instantly and at no or low cost. There have been reports of teenagers “chilling” together in the same room, engrossed in the screens of their smartphones whilst talking to each other on WhatsApp or Facebook, instead of having a conversation face to face. Now, this might be taking the Internet lark a liiiiittle bit far... The principle of the Internet as we know it today hails back as far as the 1960s. In 1989, English computer scientist Tim Berners-Lee, then working for CERN (the European Organization for Nuclear Research) in Switzerland, invented the World Wide Web (WWW), a service operating over the Internet and effectively linking computer users worldwide. Previously only available to a comparatively small number of select users, the WWW became publicly available on 8th August 1991. Unfortunately, there were only very few computers able to browse the Internet at the time. On 30th April 1993, CERN took the monumental step of making the WWW software freely available, leading to its rapid adoption and dramatic development. The impact of Tim Berners-Lee’s invention on global communication, culture and commerce has been absolutely enormous. It would be fair to say that most of us would not want to do without it. So therefore: Happy 25th Birthday, WWW, and many more to come!!!
