It’s been a roller coast er of good news recently for Aileen D’Arcy, and husband Bill Shepherd.

First they won Bronze in the Beer & Lager category for their St. Brigid’s Irish Lager and Gold in the Porters & Stouts category for their 6 Magpies stout as the ‘best of the best’ at the Blás na hÉireann awards, which were announced as part of the Dingle Food Festival. Then came what she described as, ‘The proudest moment in her life and for all the Crean family,’ when she named the Irish Marine Research vessel R.V. Tom Crean after her grandfa ther, using a bottle of their own Expedition Irish launch the vessel.

Our own Kenmare Foodie Tours have been listed at number three in the top ten food tours in Europe!

With a population of just over 2,000 our small town is up there with Paris, San Sebastian, Copenhagen, Berlin, Seville, Barcelona and others thanks to the hard work of Karen Coak ley and the amazing producers and wonderful food story we have in Kenmare.

Delighted with the well deserved acknowledgement, Karen said, “I love my Food Tours, I love telling the story of our producers and this gorgeous little town but my tours wouldn't be possible without the amazing people we meet each week.”

Old acquaintances are set to reunite nearly 60 years since first meeting, after they both appeared in an article about the histo ry of an Irish ballad.

Richard Graves, the author of 20 biographies who descends from a rich literary legacy including his grandfather, Anglo-Irish poet Alfred Perceval Graves (APG) and his uncle, poet and novelist Robert Graves, made a trip to Sneem in 1965 to retrace his family’s history. During this trip, Richard, then aged 19, stayed with Batt Burns, a Seanachie and Irish Studies teacher who grew up in the village. By chance they were both quoted in an article about the ballad of Father O’Flynn, written by APG about an unlikely friend ship between a Protestant and Catholic priest.

Richard, 73, said, “I recognised Batt’s name straight away. I was welcomed by him and his family and we spent an evening, with around 20 of his relatives, singing and reciting poetry. The local priest turned up at the party and introduced me to Irish whiskey. Despite the whiskey, it was a very memorable trip and I would return to live in Ireland some years later.”

Batt and Richard have since got back in touch and Batt has invited Richard, who has lectured widely on literary subjects, notably on the poets of the Great War of 1914-1918, to speak at the annual Sneem International Storytelling & Folklore Festival from Novem ber 11th to 13th.

Batt, who founded the event in 2011 to help preserve the Irish storytelling heritage, said:,“We look forward to hosting Richard at the next festival, which promises to be the best yet. Richard has a unique family link with Bishop Graves, APL and Robert Graves. He has many interesting stories to tell, as an author, lecturer and man with strong links to Sneem.”

Notice of motions:

1. What is Kerry County Council doing to promote and assist Farmers Markets/ Markets throughout the County. Such markets create employment and a place to sell home grown produce and crafts. They can also bring a greater sense of community and vibrancy to our towns and villages

Community Hall Grants:

I welcome the funding allocated by Minister for Rural & Community Affairs Heather Humphries TD to hard working local committees to upgrade their halls.

Budget measures:

Budget 2023 has been announced and the message is clear: Fine Gael is determined to put money back in people's pockets and help families with the cost of living. It’s more expensive to do the weekly shop, to fill your car, or to pay your utility bills. That's why Budget 2023 is a Cost of Living Budget, designed to help you and your family, with measures for the most vulnerable and the squeezed middle. There are 7 key elements- 1. putting money back in your pocket, 2. helping you and your family with the cost of living, 3 backing business, 4 helping with the cost of third level education, 5 building stronger communities, 6 ensuring the best start for every child, 7 reserve funds to protect Ireland from unexpected future shocks.

If you would like to know more please have a look at www.finegael.ie

There are a number of generous grants to assist as follows: Solar, Home insulation, air to water, etc

Please check out www.seai.ie,

Please contact me if you wish to discuss the issues or would like assistance with application forms or for me to forward you an applica tion form or more information.

2. Extra Traffic calming measures are needed along Killarney road, Gortamullen, Kenmare. Please request TII to investigate the issueand install appropriate measures.

Reply: This location will be examined for speed profile and collision history and the matter will then be discussed with the TII Safety Section.

3. Please arrange for safety measures to be put in place on the road to Templenoe Pier including signage and road markings. It’s essential residents and emergency vehicles have proper access.

Reply: There is very limited space available along the public road or in advance of this pier to implement any effective traffic management related measures and the Council have no plans currently for the implementation of such measures at this location. If there was an indication from the community that land was available, then a scheme for enhancement of the amenity including the provision of off-road parking could be considered for submission under the Outdoor Recreation infrastructure Scheme.

4. Speed reduction indicator lights are urgently needed at Castle cove, when will they be erected?

Reply: The poles for the speed indicator signs have been installed and the indicator units will be installed in the next two weeks.

BUDGET 2023

It is fair to say that there are certain aspects of this years Budget which have to be welcomed, but fundamently what the Govern ment is doing is giving back people some of the money that they have raised through additional taxation that they have imple mented over the last number of years. People and businesses are really struggling at present. For example with heating and ESB costs farmers with the ever increasing cost of fertiliser and feed and that is why the Government had to be seen to try to do some thing but to be honest what they have done is nothing more than a spit in the ocean.

A few key points from the budget that will come into place from Jan 2023

All social welfare payments will increase by €12

The Fuel Allowance income threshold will increase from €120 to €200 above the applicable State Pension (Contributory) rate. For people aged over 70, it will increase to €500 for a single person and €1,000 for a couple (January 2023).

KERRY IFA

I was glad to meet with our Kerry IFA representative’s pre Budget and I had raised in advance of the Budget many of the issues having also recently attended the Kerry IFA executive meeting in Tralee. The Government are displaying a complete lack of under standing of how difficult farmer’s are finding it at present to survive.

I will continue to a be a strong spokesperson for our farming community in Co Kerry and all of the people who’s livelihood are supported directly or indirectly from Agriculture.

.

The Working Family Payment income limits will increase by €40 across all family sizes.

Domiciliary Care Allowance (DCA) will increase by €20.50 from €309.50 to €330.

Public hospital in-patient fees will be removed for all patients from 1 April 2023.

RATES

In recent days businesses in Kerry have had new rate demands coming into their premises which are putting them under unbe lievable and unbearable pressure.

ESB

I had long believed that capping ESB charges rather than giving credits was actually a far more efficient way to help people who are struggling to pay their ESB bills.

CONCRETE LEVIES

I could not believe when I heard the Minister for Finance announce without having any consultation whatsoever with the construction sector that he was imposing  a 10% levie /increase on concrete products. To give the sums on this an average house takes 100 metres of ready mix for a raft foundation, that would have cost €8000 it now will cost €12,000. It takes an average 8000 blocks to build a home this increase by €1500. The total increase in these two basis costs is €5,500. To put this burden on young   couples who are trying to build their first family home is crazy beyond belief. It just does not make sense, at a time when we are trying to provide housing we are hurting the very people who are trying to provide their own housing. I will keep lobbying the Government about this matter as it will take enabling legislation to get it through the Dail. I will resist and fight against it at every and any opportunity.

The club were fortunate to have a second speaker in September, Jack Wilgoss from Wildegoose Nursery in Shropshire. His talk entitled ‘A late summer love affair’ was to take us through his favourite late season flowering perennials and grasses, to extend the garden’s interest right through summer and into autumn’. And that is exactly what he did! His enthusiastic tour of his walled garden while demonstrating his philosophy of gardening with nature by not using any artificial feed nor indeed any watering during the drought this summer, showed his use of layered planting , often using plants that go through the seasons right into winter, particularly wonderful grasses and glorious perennials that are not only colourful but also have shape and form and perhaps interest ing seed heads. None of this is pruned back except to encourage repeat flowering and food for wild life– the whole effect was not one of neglect but billowing beauty.

There was a good attendance by members from the club at the annual symposium at Kells Bay House and Garden, Cahersiveen, on October 1st, where the three talks by top plants-people ‘celebrated gardening, plants and landscapes’. The delicious lunch is highly recommended! See kellsbay.ie/southern-symposium 2023 for next year’s speakers.

The October meeting of the club was held as usual in the Gateway, Kenmare. Garden photographer Bernard van Giessen shared his memories of gardens he has visited in his talk ‘gardening through the lens’. His background was originally in industrial photography but now, based in Ireland, he has moved to exquisite photography of gardens, plants and nature. I have a mission!

One that I’m incredibly passionate about.

I’m really frustrated with seeing people being sold fad diets, quick fixes, and yet another ‘miracle solution’ to their problems.

But people keep falling for it because they are desperate to find a simple solution to their weight issues so they fork out money they worked damn hard for these potions, pills and promises and that brings me back to my mission...

My mission is to simplify fat loss for everyone.

I want to provide knowledge and support so that nobody gets taken advantage of again.

I’ve made it my crusade.

AND I WON’T STOP.

My programme guarantees incredible results, but also offers the education you need to keep those results long-term, and to be able to go it alone when the time comes.

My programme will be the last solution you will ever need. So go right now, get up off that sofa… Throw away all of the nonsense in the cupboard all the pills, syrups, detox reme dies and any other snake oil you’ve been sold!

I can offer you an honest, simple, achievable solution that you can trust, 100%.

But you don’t have to take my word for it check out my social media for client testimonials, incredible transformations and our wonderful community.

Don’t allow an unscrupulous industry to take advantage of you for one moment longer.

Put your trust in me, and let me try to put things right.

On Monday last Pobalscoil U16.5 hurlers took on Carrigtwohill Community College in the first round of the Munster Hurling Championship. The players put up a great fight but were ultimately defeated on a score line of 4-12 to 3-10. It was an excellent performance against a strong opponent and consider ing the number of our players who are underage again next year we have big hopes for this team in 2023!

The senior hurlers faced Gaelcolaiste Luimnigh in Tournafulla on Wednesday. A strong opening quarter saw them build a strong lead but two goals just before half-time saw the sides go in level. The Limerick school started the second half strongly and built up big lead. Despite a strong finish we couldn't reel our opponents in. Both sides have upcoming fixtures in the Limerick Colleges Hurling Championship. Many thanks to our hurling mentors this year Mr O'Brien, Mr Breen and Mr Young.

Well done to Pobalscoil Second Year Girls who were narrowly beaten 1 - 0 in the reconvened first year girl's All Ireland school's soccer semi-final on Wednesday October 12th in Nenagh to a strong Newbridge side.

Thanks to John Granville of the Inter Kenmare Soccer Club who is really dedicated to Pobalscoil Ladies soccer and to Mr Condon, the team mentors who accompanied the team on the day.

Congratulations to Pobalscoil JC2 student Tiernan Hayes who competed at the World Surf Kayaking Championships recently in Bude, Cornwall. Tiernan was the Irish Junior representative on the Irish team and was also competing as an individual in the Junior

The team placed 3rd in the World, with Tiernan also individually placing 4th in the U18 Junior Men's category, returning home with a world trophy! This is an outstanding achievement for Tiernan and his family and we wish Tiernan continued success in his future surf kayaking career.

Kenmare Shamrocks GAA U7 hurlers had their last training session for 2022 and enjoyed some pizza and treats, and a very welcome surprise visit from Kenmare and Kerry Hurler Fionán O’Sullivan.

Life is just a certain amount of time and energy. Putting this time and energy to maximum use for everyone's wellbeing is all that matters. Sadhguru

I have put much time and energy over the last 10 years into provid ing a homoeopathic practice to support the health and wellbeing of those that choose to work with me. It has been my privilege to work with so many wonderful people and to have crossed paths with a huge variety of lives. For this I am so grateful. Those that choose to look at their health challenges with a more holistic view, treating the body as one unit - as a whole, will realise that there is an obvious connection between your mental, emotion al and physical health and when one of these is out of balance it can affect the others. When I see a client there is an exchange of energy. For the client there is an unravelling of thoughts, feelings, emotions etc that may be occupying much of their time. For me in the role of the homeopath, there is a deeper understanding of humanity and how traumas and life's circumstances can effect each and every one of us differently. Over the last 10 years there has been a lot of learning, healing and wonderful discussions. Each client comes with their own rucksack of issues, traumas and past hurts and the opening of this rucksack is client led. Some may come with the rucksack open already, more will have it closed tightly and will be slow to even let me see it. This is where trust comes in; trust has been described as perhaps the most important ingredient for the development and maintenance of happy, well-functioning relationships. For some, building trust can happen at the initial consultation, for others it may take a few visits. When this is estab lished, we have the essentials required for healing. Incredible things can be done simply if we are committed to making them happen. Sadhguru

Obviously 10 years in anyone's life will show many changes and keeping my skills up to date is a vital component in my practice. The Irish society of Homeopaths, of which I'm a registered member, and the Irish School of Homeopathy, provide many post graduate courses to assist in gaining a deeper knowledge of support ing clients. Over the years I have delved deeper into fertility challenges, auto-im mune diseases, menopause, childhood development concerns and intend to contin

ue this deepening of understanding.

In 2015 I decided to offer placenta encapsulation (converting the placenta into easy to take capsules) services to my practice. I could see the struggles that many new Mums face after childbirth and felt that utilising the placenta for health support after birth made so much sense to me. In 2019 I purchased the QED Biro Energy system to enhance my homoeopathic practice. I wanted to find a system that would tap into the body's unique flow of energy and identify where the body is out of balance. The role of this system in my practice is to give a deeper level of understanding as to the current state of where the body's energy is blocked. Food intoler ances can also be identified using this system. Being passionate about learning and spreading the knowledge of homeopathy I have, for many years now, delivered homeopathy courses and have recently brushed up on my technology skills to enable students from all over the world to participate in my courses and empower the next generation with knowledge about how to heal naturally.

If you would like to discuss health challenges I offer free 15 minute telephone consultation which can be booked online at: http:://www.sineadhurley.com

The team had a total of 146 pts ten points ahead of Kinsale who came second.

Dr Billy O'Sullivan

Our team had a great win at Ballyheigue over Tralee. This compe tition involves all 13 Kerry clubs and it was the first win for the Ring of Kerry. The player manager and captain Eugene O'Sullivan donated his managers medal to the Harrington family as George had been a member of the team for many years until his recent death.

Pat O'Dwyer Shield

The Federation of Kerry golf inaugurated the Pat O'Dwyer Shield. The shield to be played for on a yearly basis and the first winner of the shield was Cillian Courtney of Killarney. The shield recognizes the work, time and dedication that Pat gave to Junior golf all over the country for many years. Pat is presently serving as a trustee of the Kerry Federation and also of Kenmare Golf club and a very popular member of the Ring of Kerry Golf club.

Kenmare GC Update Club news

With the 2 Sisters and 3 Brothers completed, focus at Kenmare GC turns towards an enjoyable end to the season as well as prep for 2023. All committees and sub-teams at Kenmare GC generally get refreshed at the end of October and the start of November, and it’s a busy time with focus on: Finishing 2022 competitions, awarding prizes and setting up things for 2023. On the club management side there’s a focus on promotion of Kenmare GC for the new year, with membership, green fees, societies and corporate golf being promoted. We’ve had some excellent success in conjunction with The Lansdowne in promoting corporate days on the course to companies, and intend to build on this in 2023.

With the new 408, PEUGEOT demonstrates the creativity of its teams by offering a new fastback silhouette at the top of the C segment. This new age PEUGEOT offers a feline stance and unique allure, engineering excellence focused on efficiency and electrification, as well as cutting-edge technologies dedicated to driving pleasure and instinctive use.

Its feline stance is typical of the Brand’s models. Its lines are sharp, the grille is the same colour as the bodywork to blend in perfectly with the front, and it proudly boasts the new PEUGEOT emblem with the head of a lion.

The inverted cut-out of the rear bumper is unexpected, while giving the profile a strong look. The new PEUGEOT 408 sits solidly on 720mm diame ter wheels and the iconic 20-inch rims feature a disruptive geometric design. At the front, the fang-shaped light signature perfectly integrates the 408 into the PEUGEOT family, as do the three-claw LED lights at the rear.

With a length of 4.69m, based on a long wheelbase of 2.79m, the new PEUGEOT 408 has a remarkably spacious second row. The boot is also generously sized.

Powered by 6 cameras and 9 radars, the driver assistance systems provide peace of mind and safety.
