Local author Sue Ryan is set to launch her debut novel ‘Pools of Blue’ this coming Saturday, November 19th, at 5pm in the Carne gie Arts Centre.

Sue’s interest in writing and literature was triggered during her years at Secondary School where she began writing poetry, progressing to short stories and, more recently, flash fiction. Her debut novel was started several years ago, purely on a whim, before being put aside and forgotten about. During lockdown in 2020 it came out of the drawer, was reread, rewritten and finally completed! Sue is delighted to have the involvement of both of her sons in the book; with Patrick editing and Alex creating the front cover illustration.

The backdrop to this intriguing novel is the London advertising scene, where Sue worked during the 1980’s and, at its heart, the book is a love story. It tells the tale of a young woman, Sarah, who is trying desperately to hang onto her marriage and the man she loves. Chris, her husband, is an alcoholic and so their relationship is beset with problems. Despite the seriousness of the storyline, the novel has levity and humour throughout, especially in the relationship between Sarah and her best friend – and frequent partner in crime - Becky.

Author Sue would not be drawn on whether or not the escapades of the two ladies are based on fact and her own time in London but there will be an opportunity to ask questions at the launch so maybe she’ll tell us more then! The launch is open to everyone, and there will be an opportunity to get your book signed and enjoy the refreshments. Look forward to seeing you there.

While World leaders gathered for COP27, in the Seanad Chamber this year we worked with the Committee on Environment and Climate Action to hear the voices of young people from UNICEF, Youth Work Ireland Galway and the Irish Second-Level Students' Union - ISSU on climate change and climate justice which both the Vatican and the Pentagon have put as the number one issue facing the planet.

Executive Director Siobhan Dennehy explained their plans to build a bigger centre and provide more service in their current location. 50,000 undocumented Irish and their struggle to find a path way to legal status is part of the ongoing work of the Irish Immigration centre in New York and centres across the US. I was privileged to visit the United Nations Security Council where Ireland’s voice is heard on behalf of other small nations. Every year since we joined the UN Irish peacekeepers have served in some of the most dangerous places in the worlds. I also spent time with Irelands Ambassador to the UN Ambassador Fergal Mythen at the General Assembly of the United Nations, this is where the nations of the world come to discuss and debate and to try to live up to the UN charter, its aims and ambitions. Among other issues we discussed climate action, the ongoing war in Ukraine and the lead roles Ireland is taking in so many areas

Blackwater Women's Group (pictured in Kenmare Bay Hotel at their Harvest Dance earlier this month) are celebrating their 20th anniversary this year, and still going strong! 2022 saw the return of many of their regular activities which had been paused by Covid and the return of the Harvest Dance was eagerly awaited and very well attend ed. Everyone enjoyed an excellent meal and a great night of dancing to the Neily O'Connor Band. The usual fun table quiz kept the guests busy between courses, the winners this year were the O'Shea Family from Letter. John O'Shea, his wife Sally Ann and daughter Kerry were home from New York and fourteen of the family attend ed the event; Kerry even gave a display of Irish Dancing. Local politicians Michael Healy Rae TD, Cllr Dan McCarthy and Cllr Patrick O’Connor-Sc arteen, Chairman of Kenmare Municipal District attended the event, speaking highly of the group and its contribution to community projects over the years, and Blackwater Women's Group would like to thank all those who sponsored prizes.

Pupils participated in a number of activities to promote prob lem-solving skills during Maths Week. Active learning was engaged in through maths trails in our yard which included real life problems. Sudoku puzzles were also a big hit in the senior classroom!

This year the children in the senior classroom are learning to play traditional Irish music on the fiddle, while first and second class are learning the tin whistle. Every Thursday we look forward to seeing our lovely music teacher Múinteoir Aoife and are really enjoying practicing new tunes and learning more about traditional Irish music. Before the midterm break, we were treated to a live music session featuring some familiar faces!

We had lots of fun learning about the history of Halloween and the Harvest Festival this year, and the senior classroom had lots of fun carving their very own jack-o'-lanterns.

Hope to see you all in e new year

A bench was recently unveiled at Taobh Linn in memory of Liam Doyle who enjoyed his daily lunch there, loving the company. Liam always encouraged others to avail of the services at Taobh Linn and he introduced some new faces to the centre. The bench was sponsored by his friends Mary Declan O'Neill and Lisa Ragosa, and his sister Patricia spon sored the name plaque. Many of Liam's family travelled from England for the occasion and a special mass for Liam was held before the bench was unveiled. Liam's family and friends thanked Taobh Linn for their hospitality on a very enjoyable afternoon which was a fitting tribute to Liam who was every one's friend. pics Mary O'Neill and Michaela Dennehy

Cleady Cross Junction improvement

Thankfully the criteria allowed for a minor works road safety improve ment scheme at the very dangerous Cleady Cross, this is an issue all local Councillors have been campaigning on for many years. Sight distance will be greatly improved resulting in much better road safety at this junction on the R569 Kenmare to Kilgarvan road.

Councillors allocation-Kilgarvan Village & Feorus West

Councillors receive a small allocation per year for minor works and projects. I was glad to recently allocate funding to improve the side of the road from Kilgarvan Village to Kilgarvan GAA field. Ideally in the future we would get a footpath extension. I also allocated funding for drainage and road improvement works at Feorus West, Tuosist.

Caherdaniel road improvements

Minister for State Dept of Transport Hildergarde Naughten TD recently opened the 1.2 Km road improvement scheme at Bracaragh, Caherdaniel from Reen Cross to Glen Beg, the €6million scheme also includes a cycle path. I campaigned heavily for this project over the past few years.

Bonane road

It was good to see further surveys were carried out recently by Trans port Infrastructure Ireland on the Bonane Road. I will keep campaign ing to get the shocking section improved from Mucksna towards Bonane.

Road Drainage

I have called for extra resources to improve drainage along the sides of our roads. Please let me know if there are any locations where improvements are needed.

Notice of motions

1. That Kerry County Council again call upon the Dept of Agriculture and the Marine to ban Pair Trawling within 6 nautical miles of the coast.

2 That we, the members of Kerry County Council, call on the Minister for Public Expenditure & Reform to provide significant additional funding to Local Authorities in 2023 having regard to the unprece-

dented levels of inflation, in particular, spiraling energy costs, rising construction costs, impact of the cost of living crisis on other revenue streams such and rents and rates. Such additional funding is crucial to maintaining essential services.

Leader programme

Minister for Rural & Community Affairs Heather Humphries TD announced €180 Million to support rural communities and enter prises. This is in addition to €70 million for 2021/2022 bringing the total to €250 Million for the 7 year Leader programme which emanates from the EU CAP programme. Kerry has been allocat ed €8.2 m. Interested parties can now apply by visiting the Department’s website and downloading an application form via the following link

https://www.gov.ie/en/service/87e09-leader-programme-for-ru ral-development/

Completed Expressions of Interest forms must be submitted by email only to leader2327@drcd.gov.ieno later than 5.30pm on Friday 16th December 2022.

The fates smiled on Kenmare this year as the relentless autumnal rain cleared for the duration of the Halloween Howl parade making for a great evening’s festivities. The popular parade is what it is because of community involvement so we can’t show enough appreciation for everyone who put the effort in to get dressed up and join in and a warm welcome to our new Ukrainian friends who we met on the night! Thanks to Mr T-Rex who was the star of the show and kept all the kids entertained with his funky moves, and DJ Eoin Finnegan who got the night started with some classic party tunes. A special thank you to the Gardai and all the organisations and clubs who helped out, organised the events and made it special for all. Kenmare is now officially on the map as the place to be for Halloween!

It seems that no sooner is Halloween over we begin to hear Christmas bells and this is your reminder to shop local this year whenever possible. Kenmare is fortunate to have a fabulous range of unique independent shops, let’s help to sustain this asset by supporting local business. You will be surprised what you can find and what services are on offer, many have the option of browsing and shopping online if you can’t make it into town.

Last, but far from least, a special mention for our wonderful dedicated Tidy Towns Committee who proudly brought home their 22nd Gold Medal. You can see more of the great work they do and show your appreciation by following them on facebook and Instagram.

The ACRES Scheme explained

I have been asked by many farmers to give information with regards to the new acres scheme. I hope the following is helpful: The Agri-Climate Rural Environment Scheme (ACRES) is the agri-environment climate measure which forms part of Ireland’s CAP Strategic Plan 2023 – 2027.  Farmers may apply for one of the approaches available under ACRES, namely the ACRES Co-operation approach, available to farmers in eight defined high priority geographical areas, or the ACRES General approach which is available nationally outside of the eight ACRES Co-oper ation zones. Farmers must engage the services of an approved ACRES advisor to prepare and submit the application. This includes the preparation of a Farm Sustainability Plan (FSP) which forms the bulk of the application. There are currently just under 700 advisors approved for ACRES. While the ACRES application system opened on 17th October 2022, to support the prepara tion of

applications, significant resources were made available in advance of this date to allow preparations for FSP’s Prior to open ing my Department engaged extensively with advisors. This included the provision of training, both in-person and by webinar, the publication of draft specifications in August and the opening of the Department’s Generic Land Management (GLAM) system in mid-August for training, information and map printing. All of these steps enabled advisors undertake preparatory work on the development of FSPs and applications in advance of the opening. Support material has also been provided to advisors including system instruction manuals and guides, and video tutorials on the steps to be taken in preparing and submitting the application. The intake into the scheme is also phased, with at least two tranches, to spread the workload of advisors. The closing date for the submission of applications under the current Tranche is Monday 21st  November 2022. The supports and information provided in advance of scheme opening will assist advisors to meet this deadline. With regards to this scheme I have also asked the Minister that in the interest of fairness to allow an extension from the present closing date to the 21st of December 2022. This extra 4 weeks would make a big difference, and I would be most welcome.

ESB Charges

I, along with other members of the rural independence group, met with representatives of management of ESB networks to discuss the current energy crisis and the future for customers. I obviously raised the plight of families, farmers and businesses in Kerry who are really suffering at present because of the enormous ESB Bills that they are having to pay. Not everyone is in a financial position to adjust to the alternatives that are out there to reduce their bills such as solar panels etc. because these are cost prohibitive in many cases and may not be practical in others. There are warnings that there will be no let up in rising energy prices until at least next summer. There is also the fact that wholesale gas prices are at a level that have never actually been seen in decades, if ever. Wholesale gas prices are now 6 times higher in September than the same month last year. This is actually frightening. I highlighted the following: that we should have never shut down our turf burning stations at Lanesboro and The West Offaly power station at Shannonbridge. This station at Shannonbridge was the largest in Ireland. Additionally, the peat burning station in Lanes boro was shut down after 62 years of electricity production. Further, the government really dropped the ball by not allowing Shannon LNG natural gas to develop. We are now in the middle of an energy crisis particularly due to these factors.

2023 Kenmare Chronicle 'Comings and Goings’

Your Journey, your story

Life in itself is a journey and in this publication we have recorded the journeys of numerous people who somewhere along their journey have touched Kenmare along their way. Over the centuries people have been coming and going and it is some of these journeys we are recording in this publication as a sample of the migration trends in Kenmare.

We are lucky that a lot of outward travel at present is carried out by people who have the choice and wish to travel, a wonder lust to see

the world, experience new cultures and also to gain work experience and careers overseas while in the past there was high levels of emigra tion generated out of economic necessity in times of high unemploy ment and from poverty and famine where emigration was the only hope of survival.

There have been many waves of economic migration since the years of the Famine in the mid 1850’s and many factors have helped over the years to help curb this emigration. Finding work in Kenmare outside farming had always been hard. Small cottage industries like spinning and weaving were very important and the developing tourist industry would provide an increasing number of jobs starting back as far as the mid 1800’s. Then during the late 1950/60’s, several factories were established in Kenmare and for the first-time manufacturing jobs were available. These factories over the years would have their ups and downs but all the time providing much needed jobs. As well as this, these developments also brought about new people to this area. Over the decades there were still ups and downs in the economy which led to corresponding fluctuation in the numbers of people emigrating but there will always be people with a lust to travel. During this last year the Transition Year Students of the Kenmare Communi ty School, Pobal Scoil Inbhear Sceine, carried out a survey on their thoughts of emigration and the results are featured in this publica tion. Even though a large percentage intend to travel there is also a large percentage of these who would like to return again here to live. Let’s hope that in the future as Kenmare continues to grow and develop that there will be increasing opportunities to encourage people to stay, attract new people to the area and to welcome our emigrants back. It is up to us to help create these opportunities. I hope you will enjoy the journey through the stories within this year’s publication and I would like to thank everyone who has contributed with their own family stories and to those who have sent us their research. It is this community involvement that makes the Kenmare Chronicle what it is. Without this state of belonging and willingness to share, there would be no Chronicle, so thanks again. We apologise if we have made any mistakes in any of these articles, but we have done our best to make sure it is in line with the informa tion we have received.

And to you the reader, thank you for your interest in taking the time to read these accounts.

Read on and enjoy the journey.

Kenmare Shamrocks AGM

Our Annual General Meeting will be held in the GAA hall on Friday the 9th of December at 8.30 pm. It would be appreciated if all members attended.

Club Championship Relegation Play-off

Our senior footballers found themselves in a relegation playoff against Austin Stacks of Tralee, to see who would remain in the top flight of the Kerry Club Championship for 2023. After a cagey start by both sides, it was our boys who took the game by the scruff off the neck with three rapid-fire goals in four minutes courtesy of Stephen O’Brien, James McCarthy, and David Hallissey. We took a three-point lead going in at half time.

We started the better in the second half with quick points from Stephen & Seanie O’Shea and soon had a built-a-seven-point lead. Stacks were always going to have their purple patch and clawed their way back into the game by the 60th minute only trailing by two points. When the final whistle did finally blow (69th minute), we had two points to spare and another year of Senior club football to look forward to. Congrat ulations to all the team and management.

East Kerry Region – Div. 4 Final.

Congratulations to our under-15 footballers who won the Div. 4 final of the East Kerry region. They beat a gallant Kilcummin side on a score line of 2-12 to 0-08.

Seanie wins his second PwC All-Star Award

Congratulation to Seanie O’Shea who won his second PwC All-Star Award at a Gala event in Dublin recently. Both our clubmen Seanie and Stephen O’Brien were nominees for the 2022 “Team of the Year”.

Club news

Our Club AGMs are taking place at the moment, and we’d like to take a moment to thank our outgoing officers – Clara Brosnan, Sean Finn and Tommy Crowley. All three have had great years as Captain and President, with two bumper Captain’s Prize days and a Presidents Prize as highlights of the year, not to mention cutting the ribbon on the new Clubhouse in August 2021.

The incoming Officers who will be inaugurated at AGMs in November are:

Bosco MacGearailt (Captain), Kathleen O’Shea (Captain) and Johnny Allen (President). We’d like to with them the best of success for the coming year in office. Winter golf has started, and we’ve been able to continue with weekend golf despite record levels of rainfall for October/Novem ber. This is testament to the great work carried out by Alan and the greenkeeping staff, and some very important drainage projects that have been completed in 2021/2022. It’s important to remember this weather when looking at drainage projects at the height of the summer.

In October a couple of the important season-long competitions were completed. Jonathan Mahony won the club singles match play competition, and Padraig O’Shea & Tomas MacGearailt won the Topline McCarthys Club Foursomes competition. The club also enjoyed a great swap day with Mahony’s Point Killarney in October, the ladies club ran an excellent week-long scramble for teams with new members, and the men’s club announced a 4-week competition in association with Hyde Whiskey. Finally, we’d like to congratulate Martin O’Brien who got a Hole in One on the 17th hole of Waterville Golf links on Oct 26th . A shot of a lifetime.

The soccer season is well and truly into the swing of things, and we have had some great success with all age groups well represented in underage boys, girls and senior levels.

Our Sunday Soccer Academy is underway and is open to all boys and girls aged from 5 to 10 years. This is a fun, inclusive and supportive environment where the focus is on friendship and fun whilst developing foundation skills in soccer. Enquiries to 087 673 6541.

An unlucky defeat for our senior mens team against Tralee Dynamos, both teams fought hard for the first 45 minutes with good defending from each team keeping each other scoreless. Early in the second half Dynamos broke through Inters defence going 1-0 up. Inter gained hope as Patrick Clifford went down in the box gaining Inter a penalty, unfortunately not converted. As the Inter side tired Dynamos piled on the pressure making it 2-0.

Our Club Lotto continues to grow and what a very special Christmas it would be if somebody took home the jackpot. Currently standing at over €7000, there has to be a winner soon! Sign up to play at www.grassroots.ie/interkenmare and tickets that are entered for December 15th are also in the draw for a National Christmas draw with some exceptional prizes. Inter Kenmare will be announcing a number of additional, guaranteed local prizes too so keep an eye out on all of our social media platforms. .

Our u12 girls will be heading into the next round of the National Cup games after a tough game against a very strong Bridge United team from County Clare. The game went into extra time with the girls managing to take the lead for the win.

On his first anniversary, we, Dan’s family, wish to sincerely thank all who sympathised with us on our sad loss.

We offer our heartfelt thanks to the relatives, friends, neighbours and all who attended Dan’s funeral Mass or viewed online, lined the road from the Church to the graveyard, were present in the cemetery and who provided emotional and practical support to us at this difficult time. We greatly appre ciated the phone calls, Mass cards, letters and messages of condolence. A special word of thanks to all who contributed to the Mass in Holy Cross Church, the funeral services and to O’Connor Funeral Directors for their sensitive and professional handling of arrangements. As it would be impossible to thank everyone individually, please accept this acknowledgement as an expression of our deepest gratitude. The Holy Sacri fice of the Mass will be offered for your intentions. First anniversary Mass will be held in Holy Cross Church on Saturday, 26th November at 7:30 pm. May his kind and gentle soul rest in peace and love.
