Kenmare Tidy Towns is asking all dog owners to clean up after their pets. “Dog fouling is unsightly, unpleasant and is a public health hazard. Dog faeces can cause toxocarisis, an infection which can cause dizziness, asthma and even blindness or seizures. Pet owners can face on the spot fines of €150 rising to €3,000 and we see that these fines are not enough of a deterrent. We are asking all dog owners to take personal responsibility for their dogs, to keep our town clean.”
Dog poo bags and bin facilities have been provided for dog owners to use at Scarteen Road, Pier and Bell Height and they ask
that they be used correctly, use the bag to contain the faeces and place the bag and content into the bin. Many dog owners scoop up the faeces and subsequently throw the bag and contents into the bushes, giving volunteers the very unpleasant and difficult job of removing these from vegetation.
They are asking responsible dog owners to model good behaviour, those not cleaning up after their dog to do so and to the public if you see dog fouling, call out this behaviour, ask the dog owner to clean up if they are not doing so.

Kenmare’s Daffodil Day volunteers were out in force on Friday March 24th raising a fantastic €9120! A busy week led up to the day with lots of people picking, donating and bunching daffodils. On the day, many people stopped to buy daffodils, pins, badges, shopping bags and tea cloths from our volunteers on the streets. A big thank you to our local hostelries who served beverages and treats to our volunteers, it was greatly appreciated!
The big days, the little days, cancer can take special moments away, but together on Daffodil Day, we take those moments back. Thank you to all who picked and donated daffodils, organised, volunteered, supported, and donated on Daffodil Day 2023. We have been blown away by the generosity of our community once again coming together in every corner of Ireland to support cancer patients and their families.

Monthly motions:
1. That Kerry County Council welcomes the decision by the Government to extend the Croi Conaithe Vacant Property Refurbishment Grant to those who wish to renovate a vacant or derelict property and rent it out. This measure will boost the supply of rental properties and will deliver on a key plank of Housing for All which is to reduce vacancy and dereliction in our cities, towns, villages and rural countryside. This council further calls on the Government to increase the vacant property refurbishment grant rates from their current €30,000/ €50,000 to €50,000/ €70,000 respectively to reflect the significant costs involved in renovating a vacant or derelict property.
2. What measures have KCC taken to improve and provide further safety, access, parking and public conveniences at and on the approach to our beaches, piers and public amenities?

Kenmare and District Garden Club
At the end of March Stephen Austen led an overnight trip to gardens and nurseries, including the Japanese Garden in Kildare, and on the return journey a visit to the newly reopened Mount Congreve gardens. Trips away give members the opportunity for making new friendships and exchanging ideas and also the opportunity to make purchases in various garden centres, the coach looked like a travelling garden centre on return!
The April meeting welcomed Mary Keenan, editor of ‘The Irish Garden Magazine’ and Gash Garden and Nursery in Co. Laois who gave a very informative and inspirational talk entitled ‘From blank canvas to colourful gardens’. She encouraged us to look at our gardens as a series of pictures and individual views, rather than the whole. Lines should connect the space, whether they are straight and formal or curved and informal as in a cottage garden setting. Trees are of prime importance as focal points even in small gardens, to soften and complement the hard outline of buildings. She stressed the importance of movement in our planting schemes by repetition of plants ‘to lead the eye through’ and also the importance of contrast in both foliage and shape for year round effect - as a rule of thumb a third of plants should be evergreen which, as well as ornamentation, serve as focal points in the garden, useful during the winter months. We will all be looking at our gardens anew!
Next meeting Thursday, May 4th at 6.45pm tea, coffee and welcome, 7.30pm prompt a talk by Mark Collins entitled ‘Botanical Highlights of New Zealand’, based on his recent visit.
Meetings take place the first Thursday of the month, unless otherwise specified at The Gateway (beyond Centra Garage on the Molls Gap/Killarney road, opposite the Brooklane Hotel grounds). Parking available. Non-members are very welcome for a small fee. Contact Stephen Austen on 087 9112876 for further information.

The Retirement of Freddie Bartlett KCC
Freddie Bartlett has recently retired from his role over water services in Kerry County Council. His wealth of knowledge of the entire water network across County Kerry was second to none. His dedication and duty to service meant that he gave a 100% commitment 7 days a week 24 hours a day along with the excellent team of personnel who have worked with him. All of his colleagues both in the local authority and private contractors held him in the highest regard for his unfailing dedication to service. I want to thank him on behalf of all of the customers who he always strived to ensure that they had a good quantity of excellent quality water at all times. Despite working in harsh conditions in difficult circumstances, many times in remote areas he always delivered and for that we are all very grateful. His kind, courteous and cool manner was also very important when there would be water emergencies and he will sorely missed by all.
I wish Freddie, his wife Bernadette and all the family every good health and happiness for a long retirement.
Kilgarvan Graveyard
I am continuing to pursue the issue of the provision of additional grave spaces in Kilgarvan Burial ground. I have organised for trial holes to be dug at the beginning of April. I will continue to pursue this for the people of the parish and the surrounding areas.
Cataracts
In a recent Question in the Dail I was informed that here in Kerry we have over 800 ppl wating to be seen by a consultant regarding a cataract and what is worse is that the waiting time is 4 years just to see the consultant and a further 2 years to actually have the cataract removed, this just seems like a third world reply but sadly it is a factual fact. So 6 years to have a cataract removed and this is why I continue to take people to Belfast on a monthly basis where the wait time is 6 weeks not 6 years. If you have a cataract then you are one of these statistics of 800 people and if you call me or my office I can have you seen in Belfast by the end of April and home with your cataract removed so don’t go blind waiting for this Government to help you.
Medical cards
From 1 April 2023, eligibility will be extended to people who earn the median household income of €46,000 or less. It will be adjusted for people living alone and for those with children. Operational details will be made available prior to the commencement of the income-based expansion. It is envisaged that these measures will be supported by a significant package of additional capacity supports to GP practices so once I have further information on the matter I will share it
Fuel allowance
There has been a lot of confusion regarding fuel allowance in the recent months as the budget announced in Oct changes to the income limit but they did not introduce the change until January so if you applied following on from the budget and was refused you should look at the below income details and apply again if you are below the threshold. Over 70s You can have income of up to €500 per week, or €1000 per week for a couple and still qualify for Fuel Allowance. The current weekly rate of Fuel Allowance is €33. Under 70-The assessable income limit for a single person is €465.30 (€200 plus €265.30). The assessable income limit for a couple (where the qualified adult is aged under 66) is €642 (€200 plus €265.30 plus €176.70). The assessable income limit for a couple (where the qualified adult is aged 66 or over and under 70) is €703.10 (€200 plus €265.30 plus €237.80).

Thank you to all the families of Kenmare and to Kenmare Tidy town who were busy in March and April in the Adopt a Green Mile initiative. The boys and girls of Kenmare were busy picking litter all over Kenmare, Bonane, Tuosist and Blackwater with Easter eggs kindly donated to all the participants by Sherry FitzGerald Daly.
Well done to our St. John's girls mini 7's football team who played in Austin Stack Park. They had 2 tough games winning one out of the two, and were unfortunate to advance onto the semi-finals as only one team went through. They were tremendous throughout! Well done to all 10 players and parents who travelled to support them.
We were delighted to welcome Fr. Peter McVerry to our school as part of Lenten Talks. He talked to the children from fifth and sixth Class about life in Dublin, battling homelessness in Ireland and being grateful for everything in his life. The children were very interested and asked a lot of questions. The Student Council presented Fr. McVerry with a cheque for the Peter McVerry Trust.
Blackwater Drama Group make a welcome return this year with another comedy production 'Holy Smoke’, they are the only local drama group who create and write their own original material based on their local histories, customs and events, giving a unique insight into the lives of their own people.
This year’s production, Holy Smoke, is set in 1974 Blackwater when the Blackwater people faced a new challenge, the prospect of losing their local school. Four schools in the area had already closed in the late 1960s, a time in which schools in rural areas were being closed by the government due to decreasing pupil numbers. Dirreendarragh N.S. the only remaining local school was notified that it was to close too. This spelt disaster not only for the local community but also for the O’Connor family and their daughter Brid, the present teacher, whose family had taught there for generations.
There are heated arguments surrounding the school’s imminent closure; some fear the school will be a great loss to the tightly knit community; others think that their local teacher Brid with a close family tie to the old school master, is not up to the mark. This however belies a deeper, darker trauma caused by abusive and widely accepted teaching methods suffered by many children there during their schooldays.
The play centres around Brid’s family who are farmers, her brother Peter a seminarian in Maynooth, their bossy ambitious mother Min, long suffering father Con and their kindly granduncle Jack. Throw in the new forester, the travelling cattle dealer or ‘jobber’, a hilarious night of dancing and mischief in the Silver Slipper Ballroom Kenmare, romantic suitors, pisogues and an unscheduled chase in a fairy fort that has dramatic consequences.
Holy Smoke includes all the hallmark features of a Blackwater Drama Group production with well-crafted characters, comedy, drama, history, nostalgia and a few surprises make this original play a most engaging performance.
This year's production will be directed by Allyson Thomas and staged in O’Neill’s Old Dance Hall, adjacent to the Blackwater Tavern, tickets will cost €10 and must be pre-booked. The doors open at 7.30pm, the performance will begin at 8pm sharp. The play will premiere on Thursday May 11th with extra performances on Friday 12th and Sunday 14th. Please note that there is no Saturday scheduling that weekend. The play will run again the following week (subject to demand) on Thursday 18th, Friday 19th and Saturday 20th To book tickets please phone Blackwater Tavern on 064 6682003.
The official launch of the Tuosist Community Complex will take place on Sunday April 30th at Ardea Parish Hall from 3-5pm. There will be an opportunity to see the plans for the development, to find out how you can help make the plans a reality and there will also be the first of five Tuosist Ticket Draws for 2023. Refreshments will be provided and they encourage everyone to come along and get involved in this exciting project.
I would like to wish Kenmare Bay Boat Tours the very best of luck in their new venture. Well done to Kenmare branch of Macra na Feirme on their night of mouse racing, a great night of fun was had by all. Congratulations again to the local actors in the Carnegie Players Kenmare for more wonderful productions.
At the recent Kenmare Municiple area meeting I raised the following concerns:
• Could KCC ask the Sisters or owners of Kenmare Convent if they would donate the field next to the convent to the people of Kenmare for parking or a playground to which I am awaiting a response.
• I asked could KCC contact the relevant authorities to repair the safety poles on the footpath approaching St Johns National School, to which they told me it was on their agenda to repair the footpath and these poles.
• I asked could KCC organise the cutting of the overhanging trees on the Tousist road.
• I enquired again as to the update on the Bonane Road. I have again asked if there any update on the footpath to Cill Mhuire.
• I asked if KCC could contact the relevant authorities to upgrade the lighting at Kenmare Pier.
• I also asked could KCC contact the relevant authorities to upgrade the lighting on the Kilgarvan road from the top of Main Street to the relief road as it is a popular walk for locals and it needs extra lights.
• I have successfully secured that the Lauragh Road to the County bounds will now be gritted in bad weathers conditions.
As always if I can help in any way please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Rory Makem and Donal Clancy carry on the musical legacy, stories and songs of their legendary fathers,Tommy Makem and Liam Clancy They toured Ireland in spring 2022 and also had a very successful nine county Irish tour in Autumn 2022, playing from Donegal to Cork, with many full houses and great audience sing alongs. Rory and Donal are justifiably proud of their families’ place in Irish music, and both had the opportunity to perform with their famous fathers over the years

Learning from those who came before you is the essence of folk music and both of these artists share the great honour of learning from the best.
Brothers Liam 'The Kingdom Kid' Walsh and Paddy 'Pretty Boy' Walsh, both put on outstanding performances at the National Stadium, Dublin on April 1st. The swim club had a great day out at the Munster gala in Tralee during March. Plenty of personal bests all round and some wrist bands for qualifying times. Great fun in the relays too. Everyone swam their best and made the club proud. Well done to our first timers Emer, Michael and Conor. Congrats to Tadgh Clifford on 1st place in 50m breast stroke and 2nd place in 50m backstroke, Roxy Durkin-Bons 2nd in the 50m breaststroke and Cillian Meagher three 1st places in 100m fly, 50m fly and 50m breaststroke. Well done to Kilgarvan Central School football team who reached the County final of the mini sevens Cumann na mbunscol competition at Austin Stack Park, Tralee. The boys won three consecutive games to reach the final and played their heart out in all, losing out to Gaelscoil Faithleann in the final, but they should be so proud of the enormous effort and heart they showed throughout. Many thanks to John Foley and PJ Delaney who volunteered their time and mentored the boys so well, thanks also to the parents who provided transport and supported the team throughout the day.
A very good start to the 2023 Division 2 campaign sees our senior footballers with five points out of a possible six. Two comfortable wins against St Marys and Glenbeigh/Glencar with an exciting draw against Beaufort in between sees us sit joint second of this competitive league. All our fixtures and results can be viewed on our website kenmaregaa.ie.
The u15 have played matches against Templenoe/Tuosist/Sneem/Derrynane and league matches against Fossa, Beaufort, and Milltown/Castlemaine.
Our Minor footballers were unlucky not to make it to another Division 1 league final when they took on a strong Laune Rangers side. Eventually, the Killorglin men took the win on a 1-16 to 1-11 scoreline.
The underage is back up and running after the winter break. It is great to see all the young players back training and playing matches. The U7 & U9 have been training hurling on the Astro pitch for the last few weeks with a session initially run by Colm O’Brien South Kerry hurling coaching coordinator. The U9 also played a hurling blitz against Kilgarvan, St Pats & Rathmore.
