After some fantastic years of our life here in Kenmare, with our beautiful B&B Mountain View in Kenmare, we unfortunately had to make the decision to stop with our B&B and our life here mainly due to various medical reasons and considering our ages of 71 and 72 years!

We can now leave our B&B with pride and with a very good feeling and prepare ourselves for a departure with pain in our 'Irish heart', to our homeland the Netherlands. The ultimate pleasant and very good memories we get for most of our B&B guests from all parts of the world, some of whom have returned to our B&B in Kenmare several times in recent years. Furthermore, we have managed to fulfil our entire energy and passion for hospitality all these years, with the result that for 5 years in a row we have received the highest rating from our guests via Booking.Com, with a 9.9. In any case, that tells us enough about how we have been able to do it for our valued guests in the B&B, where Elly with her great passion for hospitality and cooking, has been able to spoil the guests all these years with great creations on their plates. Irish break fast!

Of course, we would like to say a big thank you to all those restaurants, pubs, and other companies in the beautiful and cosy Kenmare for their great support with our cooperation for our guests.

I (Hans) will also continue to work as a travel agent for trips to Ireland to continue to promote and book many new Ireland enthusiasts to Kenmare and the whole of Ireland through www.irishtravelcentre.nl and we will never lose our hearts to Ireland and especially Kenmare, a feeling we have had for this country and its wonderful hospitable residents and entrepre neurs for 49 years.

The September meeting was held in the Gateway Kenmare, with a return visit from Carl Wright of Caher Bridge Garden, Ballyvaughan. The title of his talk was ‘Caher Bridge Revisited’. The club were truly overwhelmed by the journey from 1996 to the present day to establish a garden in the heart of the Burren, where originally there was only extensive hazel scrub on limestone pavement-the main tool being a crowbar! Through photographs , his unstinting structural skill and hard work involving manoeuvering rocks to create paths and holes for planting, the importation of 1500 tons of soil, all hand sifted and his horticultural know how (catch him in the Irish garden magazine) has made this garden a must visit for gardeners. He has skilfully boxed in the more specialised phenomenal planting schemes in the garden from the landscape by the use of stone walling incorporating a wonderful moongate and glades of hawthorn, the only tree he is able to grow in any number. The latest project is a circular stonefaced tower incorporat ing naturally another moongate (!)constructed by himself, with six men only to help put on the roof! The whole garden is indeed an ongoing labour of love, but most importantly for him it is the connection to people though the garden, whether through plants he has been given or those he has shared, or through the many people that now pass through his gates. In all this, he is ably assisted by his 91 year old father and the company of a friendly fox, who seems thoroughly at home partaking in the daily gardening adven ture!

Next monthly meeting is on Thursday, October 6th with coffee and welcome from 6.45pm. At this meeting garden photographer Bernard van Giessen will share his memories of gardens he has photographed in his talk ‘Gardening through the Lens’. His photographs are featured in Jimi Blakes book ‘A wonderful Obsession’. New members are very welcome. Contact Stephen Austen on 087 9112876 for further information

A big welcome back to all students and staff who started in Tahilla on Wednesday August 31st. We are delighted to have 32 students attending Tahilla CNS for the upcoming academic year, more than double the number that we started with in September 2019 when we first opened our doors. A special welcome to three new Junior Infant students, Clementine, Eoin and Maksynn, who are all settling in well. We also welcome Anika into Second Class and Jonah into 5th Class.

This year in Tahilla CNS we have our a Buddy System in Place where one child from the senior room is paired up with a child from the junior room. They are buddies and must look out for each other and on Tuesday mornings the buddies get together, read together and have a chat.

Along with the return of our wonderful students and staff to school we also see the return of apples and blackberries around our school grounds. As always, we made the most of the good weather and went picking these delicious fruits. In groups the children were free to explore the school grounds and hundreds of blackberries and apples were gathered. The next day, when the rain had returned, we baked apple and blackberry pies and crumbles, they were delicious!

It was an eventful August for Kenmare Triathlon Club member Robert Whyte. Over the space of three weeks he came second in his age group at the Ironman Youghal 70.3 triathlon which qualified him for the World Championships in Finland next year. The following weekend he placed first in his AG at the prestigious Boston Triathlon. He then finished with an impressive 16th overall at the Dingle marathon a week later. The result in Dingle earns him a place at the Boston marathon in 2023. "It will be the 10th anniversary of the bombing at the marathon which I was running in," Robert told us, "Our daughter Taylor is attending Boston College this year and the marathon course runs through her campus. The entire college comes out to support the runners and that experience will be lovely to share with her." Congratulations Robert!

Following on from my representations with the Department and working in conjunction with services with Kerry I am glad that our local Intreo office in Kenmare town will be fully operational again. The excellent staff in this office are there to help you with any queries etc that you may have. Also the provision the PPSN’s will also be dealt with in this office. Our excellent personnel provide such a great service and their local knowledge and dedication to their job is really appreciated by all.

I’m deeply saddened with the loss of my lifelong friend Patrick O Sullivan (Sean). He was the finest man that I ever had the privilege of knowing. The name Patrick Sean will forever be associated with honesty, loyalty, friendship, a love of animals, Kerry football, hard work and a real understanding of life. I’m heartbroken with his loss and I sincerely sympathise with his wife Margaret, sons Denis, Lawerence, Paudie, Adrian and daughters Philomena, Susan and Helen and extended family. May he rest in peace

The passing of the late Michael O’Connor Muckross, Killarney at the age of 108 is a source of great sadness to us all. Michael was an extremely intelligent, witty and sharp character who always made a great impression on all who met him. I was first introduced to Michael by my late mother and I used to look forward to meeting him. It was a privilege to have known him and to learn of his life’s expe riences.

May he rest in peace after a life lived well.

Brilliant to have been in Kenmare for the opening of the new clubhouse. After a tough few years without a club house I’m sure the golf club will go from strength to strength.

Hi, I’m Katy Steele, I live in Sneem.

I’ve rescued a variety of animals in my years, casually until 4 years ago when I came across a sick hedgehog. I learned then that if you see a hedgehog out in daytime- it needs help. When I discovered she was blind and couldn’t be released to the wild, I built a large outdoor enclosure where she lived contentedly for almost 2 years.

She started my wildlife rescue volunteer work in Kerry.

Since then I’ve helped many animals. I volunteer with Hogsprickle, hedgehog specialist. Bat Rehabilitation Ireland who specialises in Bats and birds of prey, and SRI, Seal Rescue Ireland. I’m licensed by NPWS to house and rehabilitate our protected wildlife. I'm registered with IWRA Ireland’s Wildlife Rehabilitators Association. I’m one of few rehabilitators in Kerry and I get called to all corners of the county, sometimes Cork.

Most hedgehog casualties are from road accidents or poison.

One of the Kenmare rescues was a pregnant female that was trapped in a garden football net. She recovered and was released to have her babies in the wild.

Most Bat injuries are from cats. Bats are so adorable up close. 5 animals is the most I can look after at once. As I write this, I have 3 orphan hedgehogs, the quietest I’ve been since May. Someday I’d like to expand but for the moment it’s not viable as an unpaid volunteer. I am an Artist/Photographer and have goals to use these skills to pay the animals bills.

Preferred animals to care for are hedgehogs and bats. But my area of experience is broad.

A retrospective of Clare Aylett’s paintings, Landscapes of the Beara, was held at the Carnegie in July. It launched with a screening of The English Woman, a documentary on her life in Ireland made by her daughter, Holly Aylett. In the mid-seventies, after raising a family in London, Clare Aylett came to paint in the townships of Tuosist and Lauragh where she restored and lived in five ruins. She had heritage in Ireland through her mother, Winifred Scarratt, who was related to the Skerritts, one of the Seven Tribes of Galway. These ancestors eventually settled in Finvara, in north Clare overlooking the Straits of Galway. Her father, Herbert Clare grew up in Liverpool, a talented water colourist who spent regular holidays with friends in Carrick-on-Suir. He was determined his daughter should not be swept into the Second World War without first getting an educa tion, and so she was lucky to study Economic History at London School of Economics.

When she arrived in Ireland she was one of the only solo women ‘blow ins’ and docu mented her expe riences in two small volumes of stories, My Affair with the Tailor and Nothing to

Declare. The first was based on her life in Kilmackilloge where she restored the Tailor’s House and became known as ‘the English woman’. The tailor’s claim to fame was that he had once made a suit for Bernard Shaw but the house had long been abandoned. There was no electricity on the lane and drinking water had to be brought from the well nearby. However, she was warmly welcomed into the community which revolved around Joan and Teddy O’Sullivan’s pub (now Helen’s Bar).

In England almost nothing was taught in schools about the colonial relationship between England and Ireland and its history of exploitation, so she bought every book that she could to under stand the past in the present she was now part of, and joined the Kerry Historical and Archaeological Society to which she contrib uted some articles as well as to the annual Tuosist parish maga zine.

As a painter her main interest was documenting light, and the way light filters everything in landscape, constantly shifting, rapidly changing the tones and colours, reshaping the forms of the hills in each moment of the day, and the turn of each tide. She never worked from photographs. Instead she would capture effects in watercolour and return to her studio to work up her studies in oil on canvas. Many of her oils were gifted to neighbours and friends, who kindly loaned the work for the retrospective; others she sold. She took part in several exhibitions including at the Crawford Gallery in Cork, Mill Cove Gallery in Castletownbere and the Carnegie in Kenmare.

The Garnish Sound dolphins in Sneem were successfully rescued recently by these amazing people, with lots of effort, swimming and coralling, but the instinct of local man Noel Donnelly of Sunfish Explorer - Kayaking & Boat Tours, Paddy Casey and John Hurley meant that they were taken on board quickly and brought out to the open ocean and released. The female jumped out of the water in joy and joined her young one to resume their life. Beautiful. Thanks to Lusea Hunt and all at Sea Synergy Research. A wonderful outcome.

Congratulations to the U12 Kenmare community games team who placed second in all of Munster beating Ahane/Castlecon nell from Limerick in the semifinal before coming up short against a very strong Cork side from Skibbereen. A great team effort and achievement for all the girls and their management.

A Life on the Beara: Clare Aylett (01.09.25 – 02.06.21)
Congratula tions to John Casey and his crew who won gold in the Masters D 8 in France!

With the colder, wetter weather starting to swirl around us, you'd be tempted to think that you're doing your dog a favour by holding off on his or her regular grooming until Spring. But you're not.

Contrary to popular belief, grooming is just as important during the winter months as it is throughout the dog days of Summer when it seems obvious that a bath and a short cut will do your pet good. However, during the Winter months, your dog's undercoat needs just as much attention as the topcoat does in the Summer, if not more.

Underneath your dog's topcoat of fur is an undercoat, this is almost like your pet's wool sweater. It keeps him warm in the Winter and cool in Summer, regardless of what stylish cut is being used as an outer layer.

Without regular baking and grooming , that undercoat is likely to become dirty, matted and wet-especially if they spend any time outdoors. And, like a wool sweater, if the undercoat is not allowed to breathe, it can take forever to dry, becoming uncomfortable and, after a while, start to smell.Without grooming, your dog's undercoat will eventual ly keep him colder, not warmer, can trap dirt, debris, parasites and other nasties that can lead to dermatological issues and other health concerns.

It’s not just your pets coat that needs tending this time of year, their feet also need to be addressed, and paw check and nail clipping are part of your dog’s regular groom. Coming in for a groom feels great for your pet and they always do a happy dance leaving, especially with a few treats on board!

Kenmare, or rather our wonderful produce and people, is the star of 'Camping and Cooking' a show in which the host cooks his way around the world in his camper van, and is soon to being broad est to over 2 million viewers in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

Brian, the show host and chef, was looked after by none other than our own Kenmare Foodie Karen Coakley who welcomed him to Ireland at Dingle Horse Riding School before introducing him to the wonderful Aileen and Bill of Tom Crean Brewery and Dermot Brennan. Aileen cooked her mother's Lamb Pie while Dermot foraged for seaweed to feed to his pigs, before cooking his renowned sausages with Chef Tony in No 35.

Filming took place in Wavecrest, at the fantastic Wednesday morning market in Kenmare and at The South Pole Inn in Annascaul as they uncovered the story of Tom Crean along the way. The show ends with Karen and Aileen enjoying 'Surf and Turf' cooked by Brian of Dermot Brennans Pork Ribs in Tom Crean Ale using ingredients from Heidi Ryan's and On The Wild Side and Lobster from Quinlans, in his Campervan up at Loosacaunagh, Brian found our lovely town after hearing of a private food tour Karen hosted in February for German Press with Failte Ireland involved along the way, which just goes to show you never know what will come out of these fabulous food tours which showcase our local producers in Kenmare. From sausages, to pastries, to beer, to chocolate and ice cream; the focus of the tour is the story behind the food and our wonderful local food scene, produce that can only be had in Kenmare, with many products being made by husband and wife teams - very much a part of the Kenmares Food Story! Kenmare Food Tours have been extremely busy all Summer with both public and private custom tours, in addition to private cookery classes for people holiday ing here including American Country and Western superstar Miranda Lambert and her husband Brendan, and American soccer player Mia Hamm and her family who booked Karen for demonstrations. Public Food Tours are finishing on Wednesday September 28th but Karen is available for private tours and you can contact her on 087 6401531 or take a look online at kenmarefoodietours@gmail.com

New cycle event comes to Kenmare this October!

A tough challenge for the serious cyclist, Velo Kenmare will tackle some of Kerry’s toughest climbs and mountain passes. Experi enced cyclists are encouraged to test themselves and their clubmates for the fastest finish across four grueling climbs, taking in some of the most epic scenery in the country and the best welcome back at the finish. Taking place on 22nd October 2022, Velo Kenmare is an 135km timed loop route starting and finishing in Kenmare. The total climbing distance is 1,650m so this cycle isn’t an event for the faint hearted, and organisers are hoping to attract serious cyclists who are looking for a new and exciting challenge. Velo Kenmare is managed by Elite Events Manage ment, the same organisation that brings you the iconic Ring of Beara Cycle. Cyclists are encouraged to register for Velo Kenmare on the Velo Cycle Ireland website www.velocycleireland.ie

The route will take in the stunning scenery around Kenmare, including parts of the Wild Atlantic Way and Ring of Kerry. Riders will be given a starting time slot to allow for a staggered start, taking them along a fully marshalled route, with medical cover, bike mechanic support, hot food and entertainment at the finish in Kenmare. Participants will receive a Velo Kenmare water bottle and finishers’ medal in the shape of a cow bell.

The Templenoe Team that defeated Dingle 0-14 to 0-10 in the Semi Final in Templenoe last month to secure a Senior Club County Final v Kerins O'Rahilys in October. It was another historic evening for the Club, with the senior footballers reaching the Senior Club Final for the first time ever after overcoming Dingle in a keenly contested game played before a very large crowd on a lovely evening in Templenoe. On the crest of its success in the compact saloon segment, with more than 7,000,000 worldwide sales over the generations, having won a long list of awards including the award for Car Of The Year in 2014, today PEUGEOT is proud to present the All New PEUGEOT. With the first deliveries starting in June, The All New PEUGEOT 308 will be available in 3 grades – The vehicle is the first in the PEUGEOT line up to bear the new PEUGEOT brand coat of arms in a grille entirely dedicated to it. A design and technological evolution, the radar for driving aids disappears behind the coat of arms (radome technology using indium compatible with radar waves), making it the centre piece on the grille. The new PEUGEOT 308 is bolstering itself in its segment and changing its body shape, the 55mm extended wheelbase stretches the silhouette and offers more space for rear passengers while the20mm height reduction combined with a soft-nose visually lengthens the bonnet. The boot volume is now 412 litres with 28 litres of compartmentalised storage space, with the rear seats folded, the maximum load is 1,323 litres. The front headlamps use LED technolo gy from the entry Active grade. Chiselled and slim, they contribute to the dynamics and identity of this new PEUGEOT 308. They are extended by hook- shaped daytime running lights on the front bumper. This light signature reflective of the current PEUGEOT style is recognisable at first glance both by day and by night. On the GT grades, the Full LED headlamps are even thinner and have PEUGEOT Matrix LED Technology, for greater efficiency and safety in everyday use. At the rear, the headlamps use Full LED technology displaying the 3 claws for a modern, brand-spe cific light signature. The new PEUGEOT 308 will come in 7 shades: Olivine Green, Vertigo Blue, Elixir Red, Pearl White, Ice White, Artense Grey, Perla Nera Black.
