Celebrate St. Brigid's Bank Holiday on February 1st, the Celtic first day of spring, with locally brewed St. Brigid's Lager. Brigid performed miracles from an early age, most of which related to healing and household tasks usually attributed to women, but was also a master brewer! People make the St. Brigid's cross from reeds the night before her feast day and hang it on the door of their houses to ward off evil spirits and welcome good. St. Brigid's Lager is pure like the saint herself with no additives and chemicals and brewed in Kenmare with love by Tom Crean's granddaughter and husband. You can buy on line https://www.tomcreanbrewerykenmare.ie

Tom Crean's granddaughter Aileen Crean O'Brien and husband Bill opened Tom Crean's Brewery in November 2019 and to date have produced 11 craft beers. Last year they entered four in Blas na h-Eireann and three qualified as finalists; Last man standing 1% (low alcohol option), St. Brigid's lager and 6 Magpies stout. St. Brigid's lager took Bronze and 6 Magpies stout Gold giving one of the smallest breweries in the country the best stout and the third best lager! The beers have no additives or chemicals and are vegan with an ABV of approximately 4.5%. The beer is available on draught in Kenmare, Killarney and The South Pole Inn Annascaul plus a few new venues coming online soon, and in cans in outlets throughout the County. "We are the first brewery to produce our own electricity, convert the spent grain into silage to feed our sheep, build a polytunnel to house our biodigester that we feed our spent grain, animal and food waste to produce liquid fertiliser and two hours gas per day for cooking.” Their aim is to produce a pint that doesn't cost the earth!

"Self-compassion

Chris Germer said, a thought echoed by David and Sandra Brophy of 3d Counselling now open in Kilgarvan.

David is a counsellor with a diploma from PCI College having worked previously in management and in a private counselling practice in County Kildare, before moving to Kerry with his wife and fellow counsellor Sandra to set up their own counselling practice.

David told us, “Going to counselling for a personal crisis in my life was the beginning of my further education in the study of mental health. I have been on a journey of self-development and healing and since qualifying I have had the privilege of accompanying many people on their personal journey back to better mental health.”

Sandra holds a diploma in counselling and psychotherapy from PCI College and began her journey to becoming a counsellor when she realised she wasn’t fulfilled by the work she was doing.

Sandra previously worked as a counsellor in a family resource centre where clients came with all types of issues, saying, “It is a humbling experience to be entrusted with someone's life story. I will hold a supportive, non judgmental and empathetic space for you where you can explore whatever is distressing in your life. It is a privilege to accompany another soul on their journey.”

Every client attending 3d Counselling can choose whether they wish to work with a male or female counsellor, and they look forward to supporting adults (18 years upwards) dealing with issues including stress, panic attacks, phobias, anxiety, grief and loss, low self-esteem, suicidal tendencies, depression, self-harm, sexuality issues, relationship difficulties, addiction, serious illness and many others. Their approach is holistic and integrative of humanistic, psychodynamic and CBT therapies.

Regular exercise sessions were replaced by waltzing and jiving and a wonderful time was had by all.

December was a busy month preparing for Christmas in Lauragh National School. From baking, arts and crafts to nature walks, we love the festive season in school. As part of the Blast programme our Drama teacher Sharon helped us prepare for our Christmas show. Our Christmas show was bilingual this year and was a huge success. We were delighted to welcome our families and other members of the community to school for the great day. A big thank you to the Walking Club who joined us for their Christmas party in school. The day of the holidays took us all by surprise this year. Santa arrived in the Garda car with Garda O’Donoghue and gave us all a gift! We even got to test out the sirens in the Garda car. A very memorable day to mark the end of the school term by all! On behalf of Lauragh National School we would like to wish all readers a Happy New Year and all the best for 2023!

Cahir National School

Ms Lynch’s room really enjoyed Science week, exploring the theme of energy forces, learning about our heart rate, and having fun with magnets and experiments. In addition the school is taking part in the Intel mini scientist competition which gives primary school students the opportunity to explore science and technology through project based learning and exhibitions, 3rd, 4th and 5th classes are working very hard on their science projects.

Congratulations to fifth class student Rachel Horgan who represented Killarney Scorchers Cheerleaders in November. Rachel came first and brought her trophy to school so show everyone, well done Rachel, everyone is very proud of you.

Last month saw the welcome return of the school nativity concert with Ms Lynch’s room performing a beautiful play ‘The Sleepy Shepherd’, while Mr Crean’s class entertained everyone with Christmas carols and music performances. The school would like to thank Ms Peggy Healy who helped the children rehearse, they are very fortunate to have her services on a weekly basis. It was lovely to be able to invite all the families to the school hall to enjoy the performances this Christmas.

INSHORE FISHERMEN

There is extreme concern at present about our small inshore fishermen operators who predominately fish for Shrimp, Crab and other fish that are the main source of income for our inshore fleet. In our locality we have part time and in many instances small operators who make a part living from the sea but unfortunately they are under severe strain at present. They have had to deal with poor weather and they are also dealing with the predicament with the new restrictions which are making it uneconomical to operate at present. This coupled with the additional extra fuel cost increases and at the same time these fishermen look at the larger white fish vessels which are and rightly so taking advantage of the tie up schemes but there is no such supports or schemes in place for the small inshore fleet operators.

I have asked the Government to look at this matter and that surely the same supports should be in place for the inshore fishermen as what is there for the larger white fish vessels who have received a number of financial supports already. I will do everything I can to highlight this anomaly and make Government listen.

BURNING

The burning of green waste on family farms has always been a practice that is very much needed and required for good farm management. If a person does reclamation work, cuts down trees and needs to burn branches or any other excess growth, or indeed burn our hills which is a common and traditional practice that is much needed and much required to stop ground growing wild.

The present Government seem hell bent on doing away with this practice and are at present refusing to sign the derogation which is required to allow burning to go ahead this year. I will pursue this very important matter as in Co Kerry if all burning will be completely stopped it will result in additional uncontrolled fires as we have seen in the past and which are most unwelcome.

HAPPY NEW YEAR

I want to take this opportunity to wish you all a very happy and healthy new year in 2023. Always remember if I can ever be of any assistance or help at any time please do not hesitate to contact me.

HEALTH CRISIS

At a recent HSE briefing I again highlighted the need for more resources and to strengthen the excellent service and facility that our local hospital in Kenmare provides. It is very obvious that if more services can be provided locally to our community services and our GP’s it can relieve pressure on the University Hospital Kerry. This would be of huge importance and have such a positive effect on all services. The more direct and at home medical care that can be given leads to better medical outcomes.

Junior room news

There has been lots of hard work and equal amounts of fun in the junior room over the past month. The pupils have begun D.E.A.R time (drop everything and read). The pupils have also been learning lots under the theme of space. Did you know that there are 8 planets in our solar system, including our very own Earth? The children have worked very hard on their artwork of space and on their Winter Wonderlands. We hope you like them!

Artist – Teacher partnership project

Each class in our school participated in a print-making project with an artist called Barbara Costello. This took place every Monday for three weeks. Each student chose something that represents themselves, researched their topic, and made a design on a foam sheet. We then placed our foam sheet onto the stamping ink and pressed on it until you think all the ink has transferred. Finally, we use the foam sheet as a stamp on paper. We left it for a minute after pressing it down, and then – boom! - you have your very own stamp on a sheet of paper! It was great fun making stamps and we look forward to printing again sometime soon.

Some of us already had a good idea of how to play, some of us knew a little bit, and for others it was our very first time. Do you know that in a single game of chess, there are over 400 possible moves after each move played? We certainly will be kept busy every Wednesday when we can play.

Thank you for reading our news!

Happy New Year From KMEG, we would like to extend a big thank you to our volunteers Jerry O’Sullivan, Bob Martin and Dave Brown. The decorations and lights in town looked fabulous this year and there was much hard work behind the scenes to accomplish this. Thank you to all our followers on social media for the lovely comments showing appreciation and support. The beautiful lights and artistic window displays from many of our members added greatly to the Christmas atmosphere in town. Thank you also to RVR and Prosolar for their generous sponsorship of this year’s lights and for the years to come.

A special thank you to KPH and Paddy Harkin for their continued support, without this annual unsung help we would not have any Christmas street lights in town. There were some great events in Kenmare, and it was wonderful to see the place so lively with families gathering together, and many visitors from the UK and further afield around.

After the repose of the Christmas break, we are coming to life again and looking forward to all the events coming up in 2023. We will be welcoming back some favourite long running events such as the Ring of Beara in May and Quest Kenmare in March. If you want to stay up to date with our events follow us on our Kenmare.ie social media channels.

All of our players, coaches and Committee members were deeply saddened by the recent passing of Club President, Jimmy O’Sullivan.

Jimmy joined Inter during the 1989/90 season with teenage sons Ken and Alan, working as a fitness trainer and then team coach during this first season, joining the committee soon after.

He managed the A team from Division 2, Division 1 into Premier Division and brought the team to the Reserve Cup Final in 1992, winning

both the Greyhound Cup Final in 1997 and the CastleBar Cup Final in 1998. During this time, the team narrowly missed out on the Premier League title under Jimmy's charge.

Jimmy was instrumental in the purchase of Inter Kenmare Park in 1998, the development of two pitches subsequent build of the club house and dressing room facilities. Jimmy became involved with Kerry District League as a committee member and was manager of the Kerry Oscar Traynor team with the assistance of John O’Regan KDL. Despite this commitment to Kerry soccer, Jimmy was always involved with Inter Kenmare both and off the field and epitomised commitment, loyalty and sheer passion for the game. Jimmy was elected the first President of Inter Kenmare FC in 2012 and remained so until present day.

Inter Kenmare would like to offer their sincere condolences to Jimmy's family. He will be greatly missed and was a true gentleman. May he rest in peace.

Inter Kenmare FC is committed to delivering a full size floodlit astro pitch at their grounds in Kenmare and are asking all members, players and parents, past and present, far and wide, to support our grassroots fundraising club lotto which will directly contribute to the project. Please also pass the word on and invite friends and family. It just takes a minute to join, and for the price of a cup of coffee, you will make a big difference for our club. We hope that the €2.50 per line option will allow everyone to contribute. If you can contribute €5 for 3 lines or €10 for 7 lines it would be hugely appreciated and you never know you might just win! Thank you so much for your support and the best of luck!

Club registration day will take place on a Saturday morning in February, date to be decided but we will let you know in good time. Membership is open to all and we encourage all member types, juvenile, social, player, family to come along and join up for the 2023 season.

Our club Lotto draw has been gaining momentum that past few months. Annual tickets are available which includes seven free draws and can be purchased from our website shop. If the jackpot is not won each week, there are 5 lucky dip prizes including a voucher for The Stables Restaurant at Sheen Falls.

The club is running over 35's non competitive men's basketball every Tuesday at 9pm GAA hall in Fr Breen Park, and non competitive over 35's ladies basketball every Thursday evening at 9pm. All welcome.

Golf in Kenmare

Happy New Year.

We’d like to wish everybody in Kenmare all the best wishes for 2023. May all your dreams come true, especially on the golf course.

Club News.

We ran three very successful AGMs at the end of the yearLadies, Mens and Management Committee. It was great to see the results of the work these three teams as well as the various subcommittees – a common theme at all the AGMs was commentary on the professionalism and hard work of the staff and volunteers involved in the club.

We were delighted to be back to an in-person officer’s Drive in on Jan 1st. The annual “Drive-in” is a ceremony where the officers from 2022 drive out and the 2023 team drive in, watched by a large group of members and friends from the clubhouse. Kathleen O’Shea, Bosco MacGearailt and Johnny Allen did the honours this year as Captains and President, and then led the way in the clubhouse afterwards by outlining their hopes and dreams for the year. We also have what must be a unique junior Captaincy setup this year, with twins Aoibheann and David O’Connor leading the girls and boys sections of the club this year. These are two fine golfers who will represent the club brilliantly in 2023.

Golf in 2023.

We would like to remind everyone that Kenmare Golf Club is open for membership, with no joining fees and a great range of supports for new members. There are competitions for ladies, men and seniors every week, with a good club atmosphere and plenty of communication and people to play golf with. If you are interested in returning to golf or finally taking up the game, contact us at info@kenmaregolfclub.ie and we will follow up with you.
