Is the air in Blarney and Tower clean?

By Dean Venables

Dr Dean Venables is lecturer in chemistry and a research group leader in the Centre for Research into Atmospheric Chemistry at University College Cork.

According to Cork Beo Blarney locals have been spotting a particularly odd sight. What appears to be a young child is kitted out head-to-toe in camouflage gear and putting on a show for passing motorists.Wearing a shaggy green suit and blending into bushes and shrubs along Waterloo Road into the village, the mystery dancer pops out to bust a move and entertain cars travel ling to and from Blarney. Although there have been a number of reported sightings of Camouflage Kid in the area, one traveller was in the right place and time to snap a video of the amusing sight, posted by Cork Beo on their facebook page. A local woman managed to pull out her phone right in time to capture the moment a short green bush popped into view and started waving outside the Monacnappa estate. While she said she had never seen the cheeky showman before, she said, "it definitely caught our eye." The dancing pile of camo can be seen waving and running along the wall, jumping up and down and entertaining drivers as they go by. An amusing sight, the mystery kid dons what appears to be a mini version of a Ghillie suit - a shaggy camouflage outfit used to blend into grass and bushes. Whilst the identity of the masked entertainer is unknown Cork Beo reported that there have been a number of sightings of Blarney's Camouflage Kid.

The Farm Grenagh have had a wonderful Summer with Fairy Fundays, SuperHero Saturday and of course their much anticipated annual harvest display. Want to know more about the quality of the air you and your family breathe? Everyone needs healthy air, but the sad reality is that air pollution causes 1,300 premature deaths in Ireland every year. To address the scourge of poor air quality, the first step is to measure air pollution. To do so, this autumn the Environmental Protection Agency are launching an exciting and ambitious project across Cork city. They need 1,000 volunteers across Cork City to place small tubes outside homes and businesses around the city. The tubes capture nitrogen dioxide, a serious air pollutant. Cars, trucks, and buses produce nitrogen dioxide, so its levels are often especially bad near busy roads and in vehicles. Nitrogen dioxide causes lung cancer, exacerbates cardiovascular disease, and causes asthma. Those with respiratory conditions and children, whose lungs are still developing, are especially vulnerable. The information from the tube measurements will be used to build a map of nitrogen dioxide around Cork city. It’s a great way to find out about air quality outside your house, school, or business — that is, the air that you and your family breathe! Over 600 people have signed up across Cork so far. But there have been few signups so far in Blarney, Tower, and Temple Hill. The EPA are particularly looking for people in these areas to join the project. Signing up is quick and easy — just go to www.cleanairtogether.ie and register your address by Wednesday 14 September. They’ll send you a lipstick-sized tube to temporarily attach outside your house or business for about a month. No power is needed! It’s a great way to get the kids involved in collecting real science data. And perhaps it will even start a discussion in your family and community about the importance of keeping our air clean.

There was a wonderful morning of celebration in Blarney recently to mark the Feast Day of St. Mother Teresa. Bishop Crean led prayers and thanksgiving before blessing all present with the relic of St. Teresa and speaking with the confirmation children of Scoil Chroi Iosa. The celebrations finished with tea and chat in the Convent.

In today’s world, where stress is rampant, fast food is delicious and people seem more and more glued to their screens, it can be difficult to find a hobby that keeps you healthy and helps you meet people. For some people, watching a TV show like 'Strictly Come Dancing' or 'Dancing With The Stars' is the closest they get to dance, but what they don’t realise is that dancing is an activity that doesn’t have to be out of reach. You don’t have to be in great shape, you don’t have to be young, and you don’t even need to have a dance background to enjoy ballroom dance. It has a number of health benefits for everyone, not to mention it’s also great fun so if you’ve never considered ballroom dancing as a hobby, you might want to Ballroomreconsider!dancing is a low impact aerobic activity that burns fat and can boost your metabolism and can help lose those extra Covid 19 pounds. In just thirty minutes of dance you can burn between 200-400 calories – that’s roughly the same amount as running or cycling, and since ballroom dancing is such fun, you’re getting the benefits without feeling like you’re working out. Danc ing improves the health of your heart and lungs and strengthens muscles and increases endurance. It also increases bone strength, therefore decreasing your risk of osteoporosis. Dancing helps with balance, co-ordination, and flexibility. Ballroom dancing, whether taking lessons or going to a party, keeps you in constant contact with other people, creating the perfect social outlet. It enables you to meet new people and make new friends. The confidence that ballroom dancing can create is Corkenormous.Dance Club’s autumn classes covering the basic steps of all the ballroom and Latin American genres of dance are now enroll ing and scheduled to commence from Tuesday September 13th in the city centre and in Blarney GAA Club from Thursday September 15th. It came about when she discovered there wasn’t any professional dating and matchmaking agency in the southern part of the country. She had completed courses in counselling and life coach ing and was looking for a way to use her new skills and help people at the same time.

AVAILABLE

“Initially, I was thinking of becoming a life coach” Eithne says, “especially around the area of helping people who struggled with weight management while also helping them to develop healthy exercise habits”. While she was still debating whether to leave her full time secure office job and set up as a life coach, she changed course and decided that a matchmaking agency was the way to go. She had a few friends who were trying online dating sites at that time and they were telling her how difficult it was to meet people who wanted a committed relationship. Most of the people they met online just wanted to have one night stands or a bit of a fling, whereas her friends wanted a long term committed relation Elevenship. and a half years later and Eithne is still matching people and loving every minute of it! It has been especially busy since the counties reopened in May 2021. She believes this is due to people not socialising as much as they did prior to the pandemic and also because they are wary of internet dating scams.

You can find him hunting in the long grass on the riverbanks below the castle. With such a range of styles and artists there is certainly something for everyone and it’s well worth a visit just to view them. A second new addition is the Jellyfish Fantastic pop-up garden in our Court exhibition room below the castle entrance. The concept was developed jointly by UCC scientist Dr Tom Doyle, award winning botanical artist Shevaun Doherty and myself. The aim of the garden is to ‘take jellyfish out of the sea’ and place them in a very different environment, a garden, where we can compare them with plants and flowers so that the viewer sees them in a different and positive light rather than just fear them. The project is funded by the SFI Discover Programme. The garden is framed by six 2-metre-tall artworks and a kreisel aquari um with live moon jellyfish in it. A jellyfish inspired rock garden is in front of the artwork and aquarium with plants specifically chosen because their shapes, colours and symmetry are similar to jellyfish. Some plants look like seaweeds and other plants are suspended from the roof to mimic jellyfish tentacles. It is proving very popular and is certainly getting people talking.

SALESBICYCLECYCLES&REPAIR

The apple harvest has been exceptional this year and our cider apple trees have finally started to produce enough fruit to seriously have a go at a proper batch of organic cider. We hope to have our usual juice plus the new cider for sale in the café and shop next year.

The very dry summer has proved a real challenge for us, as we have had to devote a large amount of resources to watering. That said, the gardens have performed well under the stressful condi tions, although now the borders are starting to fade in places, and we have to start tidying and cutting back as required. We are also taking cuttings of a lot of our more tender plants as insurance against possible winter losses. A good number of our borderline hardy plants in the tropical border and jungle areas will survive our typical winter but there’s always a risk of a particularly cold snap. There are quite a few plants that we must overwinter in our glasshouses and polytunnels, and I will be watching the weather carefully in the coming weeks as I hate to lift them prematurely but equally can’t take a risk that they will be killed by frost.

It’s the time of year for pruning hedges, mulching beds and general tidying up. In the vegetable garden we have been cutting back our old raspberry and loganberry canes and tying in the new ones for next year’s crop. We have dug up the last of the potatoes. Lifted shallots, garlic and onions and planted out brassicas and leeks. Now is the time to sow spinach, winter lettuce and rocket to take you through to the autumn. I hope this wonderful weather lasts a few more weeks, but perhaps a little overnight rain would also be very welcome! cycles

August was a very busy and interesting month for us here in the gardens. We launched this year’s sculpture trail, introduced a new pop-up garden featuring jellyfish, and harvested a bumper apple crop, all while dealing with the extreme drought. Our sculp ture trail is an annual event here, and this year we have 50 unique pieces placed through various areas of the gardens. There are some old favourites and some brand-new additions, some are well hidden and waiting to be discovered so a little exploration often CB

Regarding St Patrick’s Day the majority of people who responded to our survey were in favour of festival rather than a parade, and we are working on that. Your ideas included a food market, a community family fun day and live music. We will need your input and help so please reach out and get involved.

Over the course of the month quite a lot happened with the resurfac ing of Paud’s Cross to Kerrypike completed. I know that the timing of this annoyed people with Killard also closed for the repair of Wyse’s Bridge. I do think that the finished product is worth it with a lot of positive commentary on the Wyse’s Bridge refurbishment in particu Ilar.have asked that Paud’s Cross be addressed as a matter of priority. The amount of traffic currently passing through that area is enormous and the speed of traffic means some people are happy to take chanc es while negotiating the cross. I will keep you up to date as that Onprogresses.thesame road I have been asked for pedestrian crossings and I am glad to say that one has been granted on the roadway between Riverview Estate and Barter’s Wood. This is as part of the active travel projects for Blarney and the NTA has granted approval with this going to tender for design consultants. I have also been given the go ahead for bus stops at Clogheenmilcon and the entrance to the Blarney Business Park to accommodate the employees of the businesses in the park. This is rather a large project with footpaths etc required but the money has been set aside so I’m looking forward to seeing this Thedelivered.residents of Killowen had a very well attended night where they met with all the ward councilors. I have committed to following up with numerous requests that arose on the night including the speed of traffic coming through the area and the persistent leak from the Irish Water facility. Finally I have no end of complaints from people regarding speeding through built up areas and motorists parking wherever they feel the urge, especially in people's driveways around the secondary school. Can I ask that people cease doing this as the Gardai have been asked to step in here? Congratulations to local man John O'Brien for winning the Connacht senior mens amateur open.

August was an incredible month. The Lord Mayor was out of the country on holiday and I was lucky enough to have the choice of attending some great events. From the Rose’s Ball In the Carrigaline Court, the visit of the French Tall Ship SV Belem to launch the Alliance Francaise Cork French Film Festival, welcoming the new Irish sail training vessel the SV Grace O’Malley, the celebration of the Firking Crane centre, the celebration of 60 years of the Montforts in the Cork Opera House, the visit of the Korean ambassador and the chance to travel in convoy with the sirens and blue lights of the Emergency Services on National Services Day it has been a very busy month.

Alpha is a series of interactive sessions for adults of all ages and stages of life and faith, exploring life, faith and meaning. No pressure. No charge. No follow up The course will run in person at the Carraig Centre, Ballincollig, Cork, P31 PV20

August 2022 was also one hundred years since the killing of Michael Collins at Beal na Blath. The weekend of the 21st and 22nd of August was very busy with many civic receptions including the opening of the new Michael Collins exhibition in the city museum. On that Sunday over 12,000 people went to Beal na Blath to hear An Taoiseach Micheal Martin and Tanaiste Leo Varadkar give orations. It was fitting and timely that this happened on the 100th anniversary of General Collins death.

The above is just a very short account of a famous writer who lived for a period at The Hydro. A great many more individuals of varying degrees of fame and importance stayed in this famous place over the years of its existence and it may be of interest to take a look at some more of these in the future.

Famous Crime Writer and The Hydro by Brian Gabriel

The Shimwells returned to England just as WW11 was declared in 1939. Olive gave birth to a son in October 1939. John went to work for the Whitbread Brewery in London, before eventually moving to the British Vinegar Industry in Frome Somerset.

The late Jerry O’Leary of Tram House, Blarney, informed me that while he was living in the area as a young boy, Olive Shimwell/ Harriet Rutland, on his First Holy Communion Day, presented a copy of her first novel to him which he still had in his possession.

During its time in existence, St. Ann’s Hydropathic Establishment played host to countless members of royal families, statesmen, politicians, celebrities and wealthy families from across Europe, all wishing to partake of the waters of Doctor Richard Barter’s Hydro pathic Establishment which was founded in 1843. Apart from the hotel section St. Ann’s had a number of very desirable residences which were rented at the location. One of these houses was rented by a couple named Olive Maud Shimwell and her husband John Lester Shimwell. Olive was born on New Year’s Day, January 1st 1901 in Birmingham as Olive Maud Seers, a daughter to Joseph Seers a well-to-do painter and decorator and his wife, Mary Elizabeth Seers. Very little is known about her young growing-up years but by 1926 she was working as a School Teacher when she married on 14th August 1926 in Harborne, Staffordshire, John Lester Shimwell, a microbiologist and highly respected brewing scientist with a degree in biochem istry from the University of Birmingham The couple moved to Ireland in 1931, taking up residence near Blarney at St. Ann’s Hill in a house named Hillside, according to the Dent & Son papers at the University of North Carolina. John was now appointed Head Brewer and on the board of directors of Beamish & Crawford brewery in Cork. By all accounts they were well liked and integrated very easily with the other Hydro guests and were also very popular and friendly with the local inhabitants of the area. While living here and to help pass the time while her husband was at work in Cork city, Olive began to write crime/mystery novels under the pen name of Harriet Rutland. She had her first novel published in 1938 under the title, “Knock, Murderer, Knock”. It was extremely well received by both critics and public. She was hailed as a rising new star of crime fiction and she was often proclaimed to be the new Agatha Christie. She said herself that while the characters in the novel were all based on the collection of extremely eccentric occupiers of St. Ann’s Hydro, the location of the hydropathic establishment was changed to Hotel Presteign ton Hydro in a totally fictional town in Devon. The change of location was also done to conceal the possible identification of some of the inhabitants of St. Ann’s, some of which could be readily recognised. The couple involved themselves with all the different events and recreations organised by The Hydro so she could watch and take note of the idiosyncrasies of her future various characters.

The second of Harriet Rutland’s mysteries, Bleeding Hooks, was published in 1940, and the third and last, Blue Murder, was published in November 1942. Olive apparently did not publish anything further after this. Unfortunately, their family life did not go well and Olive and John were divorced not long after her novel Blue Murder was published

John Lester Shimwell of Frome, Somerset was last seen alive on 5th September 1964. His body was found on the following day at The British Vinegars Research Laboratory, Welshmill, Frome, where he had been working.

An Illustrated lecture takes place on Thursday 6th October at 8.00 pm in the Blarney Secondary School titled: Stories from the Big Houses in Montenotte. Speaker for the evening is local historian Brendan Goggin. Everybody welcome.

They were classed as ‘Golden Age Mystery’ novels from a time of classic murder mystery novels of similar patterns and styles, predominantly in the 1920s and 1930s. Even though she only wrote three books with solid stories, each novel is filled with black humour and all three have clever and intriguing plots. They were big sellers in the United Kingdom and America in their time. When she stopped writing in 1942, her books gradually fell out of popularity and she faded into obscurity until recent years when she has been rediscovered as the excellent crime writer she was. A resurgence of interest in her books is currently taking place and they are once again enjoying great popularity and are easily available. She remarried in July 1948 in Newton Abbot, Devon, where she lived out the rest of her life until she died there in 1962.

Her first husband John also remarried in 1947. He and his wife had a daughter in 1948.
