Nick Ryan RIP Sue, Patrick and Alex would like to thank everyone for all the kindness and support shown to them over the past few weeks. Thank you to those of you who sent cards, Mass cards or messages of condolence. Thank you for all the gifts we received and for the countless offers of help. We were overwhelmed by the reaction from so many of you, in particular from our own very special parish of Bonane. It’s a great comfort for us to know how much Nick meant to those in his local community. Miss Polly and the Crocodile, written by Felicia Thomas, has been named by the Independent Book Publishing Professionals Group as one of the best indie books of 2022 with her book crowned the winner of the Children’s /Juvenile Early Readers /Chapter Books (Fiction) category in the 2022 Next Generation Indie Book Awards. This is the world’s largest book awards programme for independent publishers and the winners and finalists were honoured on June 24st with a gala event at the Mayflower Hotel in Washington, DC. Felicia, a familiar face in Kenmare having worked in Simplicity on Henry Street for the last four years, lost 80% use of her dominant hand after an accident in 2013. She thought she would have to learn to write with her left hand so started this story to practise. The story tells of Miss Polly whose fingers were bitten off by a crocodile. “I thought I would need a good story to tell my future grandchildren – and it grew from there,” says Felicia. This wonderful book is available from www.feliciathomas.ie, Puccini’s, Kenmare Bookshop and book shops around the country. Congratulations to Caitlin O’Sullivan who recently competed at Jamfest Europe in Liverpool England. Caitlin was on the Senior level 3 team for Scorchers Killarney. The team placed third at this prestigious event competing against other European clubs in Cheer and Dance.

Last month Rockmount care centre, Kilgarvan, welcomed a team of volunteer workers from Worldpay from FIS. On the day, the team worked hard to give a facelift to the therapeutic gardens of the centre which, post Covid, were tired and weather beaten. The therapeutic gardens are an important part of the recreational activities provided by Rockmount care centre. The centre provides respite day care to those with Alzheimer’s and other dementia related illnesses from a large catchment area including Killarney, Kilgarvan, the greater Kenmare area and Sneem. Rockmount is the only centre in south Kerry which provides support for clients and families with dementia specific conditions six days a week. Its unique provision of this type of care enables many families to continue to care for their loved ones in their own homes and communities. Rockmount care centre was extremely grateful to the Worldpay volunteer force who worked long and hard with our team to complete the project with their enthusiasm and cheerful nature made it a very enjoyable day.

The garden of The Water Margin, Cappanacush East, Templenoe will be open to visitors on July 30th & 31st and August 1st from 1pm to 5pm. The garden is one and a half acres in area and is bounded by a stream and a river with waterfalls and cascades. Supervised children are welcome. No dogs please. Follow roadside signs at Templenoe on N70 eircode V93 RW88 Entrance by donation to The Simon Community for the Homeless.

Maison Gourmet is dedicated to serve you traditional French foods & pastries while providing a great customer service. We offer sweet and savories for breakfast and lunch, as well as desserts, pastries, sandwiches, salads, take-away dishes and more. We also serve a variety of beverages, which include organic coffee, tea, sodas and hot drinks. Our coffee shop welcomes you 7 days a week for a great lunch or breakfast in a warm and friendly atmosphere. If you’re looking for something freshly-baked and homemade, you’ve come to the right place. À bientôt!

Kerry Nature Play session took place in Reenagross for Ukranian children staying in Kenmare, an event organised by Kerry Community Response Forum and run by local Forest School leaders, Patricia Holbein and Mara Tolk-Muller, with Mariia Turuk as translator. The session was fun filled, with games, rope swing, hammock, mud kitchen, clay fun, nature collage, singing and sensory awareness.

A new online map showcases over 130 different walking trails in County Kerry has been launched by Kerry County Council. The Kerry Trails Map is an online interactive map for Kerry, which provides essential trail information for those who would like to explore the county’s numerous walks and trails. The map was developed in partnership with the South Kerry Development Partnership and North East and West Kerry Development and was funded through the support of the Department of Rural and Community Development’s Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme. The project mapped 130 Kerry trails and offers over 270 options for walks throughout the county, and provides essential information including trail location, length, difficulty, duration, GPS coordinates, directions to the trailhead/parking areas and other important information. Head of Tourism with Kerry County Council, Niamh O’Sullivan said that developing and promoting trails and walks around the county is an integral part of the County Kerry Tourism Strategy. "Kerry already has a well-established reputation for walking and hiking and this new map, which is so easy to use, will greatly complement the resources and information which is available to walkers from Kerry and beyond," she said, "I would like to acknowledge the assistance of Brian Coakley of Active Me who was involved in developing the map as well as SKDP and NEWKD and the Kerry Tourism Industry Federation who supported the initiative from the outset.’ The map can be downloaded for use off-line and offers a 3D view of trails to enhance the user experience. Visit https://www.kerrycoco.ie/tourism/kerry-trails-map/ to view and download the map and follow Kerry County Council on social media for updates.

Begley & Bowie’s store at 16 Henry Street celebrated its first anniversary on July 8th. Founded by artist and designer Doireann Healy in 2019, the brand showcases Doireann’s passion for all things art and design through her screen printing, sustainable fashion and fine art prints. It has been a busy year for Begley & Bowie since the excitement of opening the shop last summer, Doireann hadn’t anticipated the level of support and was blown away by the amount of visitors to her store. In September, having had her clothing stocked in Brown Thomas for summer 2021, Doireann was invited by the same fashion team to stock her collections in Arnott’s Dublin. A few months later in November she had great fun designing the art work and hoodies for Inbhear Scéine Gaels Ladies football club under the watchful eye of her two daughters who are both members. After a busy Christmas Doireann was approached by the Trump Hotel in Doonbeg to design Doonbeg sweatshirts for children and adults and to stock the rainbow collection. She was also delighted to design the art work and a collection of hoodies for the Ensemble Mhúrscraí, a West Cork youth orchestra that has members from Coolea to Clonakilty and is run by Liadh Ní Riada. In April Doireann was invited by Bree Allen to bring her pop-up shop to Ballymaloe for the May Fair festival where all involved had great fun, the Ballymaloe hoodies Doireann designed for the weekend were a sell out.

The last few months have been especially hectic as Doireann was approached by Adare Manor Hotel to design hotel merchandise for children, women and men and Pro-Am t-shirts for the JP McManus Pro-Am in Adare. She had a wonderful time researching and visiting the hotel for this project, with the highlight being watching Tiger Woods in action. Having been invited back for a second year this summer to Brown Thomas for Create, as one of only 27 of Ireland’s most talented and exciting designers chosen, Doireann wanted to show the two facets of her brand, that of an illustrator and screen printer. For the former Doireann illustrated a cultural map of Dublin featuring some of the city’s favourites from Phil Lynott to the Abbey Theatre to the Liberties; all hand drawn in her studio over several weeks and printed on a range of clothing. She also screen printed a range of sweatshirts here in her studio in Kenmare based on one of her fine art prints entitled 'Neon Pop’, this collection is currently available from Brown Thomas, Grafton Street, and online at brownthomas.com. In June Doireann had a photo shoot on location in Dublin to launch her new collection with top stylist Sinead Keenan and celebrated photographer Eilish McCormick. Based on Doireann’s love of colour the photos have since received a great response across the Irish print media. Doireann is currently finishing an illustrated Dingle clothing collection for a store in Dingle, she is also working on the official merchandise for a well known Irish hotel and a collection of her fine art prints will be part of an exciting exhibition shortly. She would like to thank all who support her locally and wishes everyone a wonderful summer.

many miles and given her every opportunity to participate in sports but more importantly to develop, work hard and enjoy what she does. She realized that to excel and give the level of commitment necessary in one, she would have to sacrifice other sports and thankfully she chose us. Dedication to a very high-level training program over the last 2 years has never wavered and giving Ayla the support and time that was needed from her team of coaches, launch drivers and fellow competitive club scullers has never been an issue due to her athletic drive, being able to absorb and apply advice, but overall being a super individual which has made training her an absolute pleasure. Ayla's crew (scullers Moya Knowles, Lauren McCarthy Steele from Skibbereen RC, and Kate Reidy of Lee RC) will be rowing against 18 other countries and their first heat is on the 28th, Thursday morning at 10 am. Rowing Ireland is sending an additional 15 Junior athletes to Italy who will be rowing in singles, doubles, and quads at this event. They are all part of the High-Performance program that has assisted Irish scullers to success at Olympic and World/European Competition over the past 10 years. We wish Ayla the very best and thank club members and friends for continued support to help send her on this journey.

Kenmare Rowing and Boat Club are delighted to have our junior club sculler, Ayla O'Neill selected to represent Ireland in a Junior Womens U19 Quad at the Junior/U23 World Championship 2022, being held on Lake Varese, Italy 28th-31st July. This is the highest level event in the rowing calendar, bar the Olympics, for this age group. There will be over 25 nations and close to 1000 rowers taking part in the 4-day event and it will be possible to watch all the races streamed live at worldrowing.com. Ayla started rowing with us at the age of 13 and has always had a passion for sport and trying to excel in any discipline she is involved with. Her parents, Mike and Maria O'Neill have traveled

MICHAEL HEALY-RAE TD Michael Healy-Rae T.D. Sandymount, Kilgarvan, Co.Kerry Jackie Horgan KCC Retirement I want to congratulate and thank most sincerely Jackie Horgan Foreman Kerry County Council for his excellent years of dedicated work in our community with his various roles in Kerry County Council. Jackie was always extremely diligent, hard working and sincere about his work. Nothing was ever too much and he always went above and beyond the call of duty in ensuring the well being and safety of the people in the entire engineering area which he worked in. I wish himself and his wife Mary and their family every good health and happiness in the years ahead. Social Farming I was very glad to organise a deputation from Social Farming in Co Kerry to meet with the Minister for Agriculture Charlie McConalogue and Minister for Education Norma Foley on Tuesday in Dail Eireann. The deputation consisted of Mr Joe McCrohan South Kerry Partnership, Mr Noel Spillane North East Kerry Development and Mr Eamon Horgan from Kerry Social Farming. It was an excellent meeting where they outlined the priority and importance of Social Farming both to the participants and the voluntary host farmers who do great work in assisting the participants in this scheme to develop to their full potential. I really truly believe in this programme and I have seen how it can help the participants so much and how much they can grow and develop their skills in all aspects of life. The surety of funding and other issues to do with Social Farming were raised with the Minister and both Minister’s gave a great hearing and have an indepth knowledge and understanding of what is needed. I wish social farming in Kerry every good luck for the future and this deputation will definitely assist in that.

Bonane I am glad to be ensuring in the near future that a new post box will be installed to service the people of Bonane as the old one is inadequate and needs to be replaced. I am also doing this in a number of other locations throughout South & West Kerry. I am ensuring that existing post boxes will be painted and refurbished to make them safe and secure. Family Carers Ireland I was glad to meet people from Family Carers Ireland recently to discuss their on going needs ahead of Budget 2023

Kenmare Tidy Towns Kenmare Tidy Town's 2022 judging takes place in June, July and August. The first judging has been done with the second judging imminent. The Tidy Town judges like to walk around our town very early in the morning, as well as during the day and we cannot afford to lose our GOLD MEDAL! A big thank you to everyone that has worked with us and supported us to keep Kenmare presentable, we ask that all residents and businesses make a special effort to keep this up, particularly during the judging period and the busy tourist season. Kenmare Tidy Towns are continuously working hard for our community and have just entered the 2022 Tidy Towns Competition. Tidy Towns is not just a competition. It demonstrates everything good about our people; volunteerism, positivity, working together, community spirit, protecting our environment, that sense of pride in looking after the place we call home. In the past year, along with our regular maintenance of litter picking, sweeping, painting and planting for biodiversity, we also commissioned a swift mural, obtained funding for a Biodiversity action plan, implemented Ecotelly, situated in front of the Courthouse, connecting the sea to the town (download the app to experience augmented reality), put a water fountain in Town Park, run monthly community seed and plant swaps during Spring months, and completed community Climate Change & Biodiversity training with Transition Kerry, as well as Citizen Science workshops at The Peninsula Lands with Kerry ETB! So once again we ask you to put your shoulder to the wheel and do what you can to keep Kenmare looking good. Don't ask ‘Whose job is it!’ So please, keep your premises presentable, and in good condition, do not litter, remove or report any instances of litter, plant pollinator friendly or better still, leave a section of your lawn uncut (we can provide ‘Managed for Wildlife’ signs to highlight your efforts to passers-by) and please tell us about any community improvement actions, particularly any sustainability or biodiversity actions happening locally. If you would like to get involved or help but are unsure of what to do, please get in contact with us at kenmarett@gmail.com or join us on a Tuesday night at 7pm in the Square during the summer months. You can find us on www.kenmaretidytowns.ie or follow us on social media

Celebrating 100 years of Ulysses; James Joyce and Ulysses comes to Kenmare! July 22nd @ 8pm Written and performed by Robert Gogan, Ulysses is considered to be one of the greatest, if not the greatest, novel ever written and Gogan’s mission is to make Ulysses accessible to anyone who wants to read, and enjoy, Joyce’s masterpiece. But have you ever wondered what it’s all about and why it’s so acclaimed? Now is your chance to find out, and have a great evening’s fun and entertainment at the same time, because James Joyce and Ulysses is coming to Kenmare. Strolling Through Ulysses! is a one-man show that tells the fun-filled story of Bloomsday - June 16th 1904 - the iconic day around which James Joyce’s Ulysses is based. Tickets €15. 'Sing and Laugh with Paddyman' July 23rd @ 8pm 'Sing and Laugh with Paddyman' is a folk and Irish music show brought to you by one-man band sensation, Declan O'Sullivan. Some of his songs are serious, such as putting music to Luke Kelly's poem, 'For What Died the Sons of Roisin,' and others are just for the laugh. With four albums under his belt, Paddyman has performed live to over one million people worldwide. Paddyman, real name Declan O'Sullivan, was born and raised in Co. Kildare but his paternal roots are firmly planted in Kenmare. “My grandfather and father’s family are all from Kenmare so it is an important place for me to perform.” I would like to do a special performance that would appeal to both the local community and visitors in search of a professional Irish music show that features classic Irish singalong ballads, original music and some funny stories.” Tickets €25.

P.J. Murrihy accompanied by Seamus Shannon Friday August 5th @ 8pm The singer-songwriter from County Clare, P.J. Murrihy has built up a loyal following over the years after he came to national prominence in the late 1980s with a song called ‘Pat Murphy’s Meadow.’ Since then, he has recorded many popular songs, and has also written for the likes of Big Tom, Daniel O’Donnell, Foster and Allen and Brendan Shine Other memorable songs recorded by P.J. include; ‘My Father’s House,’ ‘The Old Trashing Mill,’ ‘Should I Fall Behind.’ (duet with Isla Grant) and ‘The Land of the Gael.’ The Parish Friday August 26th @ 8pm HubCap Theatre returns with their delightful comedy, The Parish. The hilarious story of characters you can find in every parish in Ireland. The Parish brings to life a story of conflict and treachery, but ultimately celebrates friendship and community which creates a bond that overcomes all adversity. Performed with minimal set and supported by a rich soundscape, The Parish is highly entertaining, accessible theatre in its purest form. Performance run time is 1 hour and 20 minute For reservations contact www.carnegieartskenmare.ie or phone 064 6648701

Congratulations to our recent Lotto Winners !!! In June, we were delighted to announce that Donal (Dan) & Ann O'Sullivan along with John Sisk were joint winners of our Lotto draw worth €7,000. Their Lucky Numbers were 4,9,14 and 21 and they both went home €3,500 richer. Pictured below is our Vice-Chairperson Sean O’Regan presenting Ann with her cheque.

Football and Hurling Round-up Two recent losses against An Ghaeltacht and Dr Crokes means that our senior footballers will be playing in Division 2 next season. It was a tough divisional campaign this year not helped by injuries but many of our younger getting valuable game time and experience. Let’s hope for a quick return to Division 1 in 2023. Our senior hurlers are currently taking part in the Intermediate Championship where they faced Tralee Parnell’s in the first round. This was an exciting game of hurling which went down to the last puck of the game. Unfortunately, that puck rebounded off the Parnell’s crossbar and came back out which resulted in the away side winning by 3 points. Final Score Kenmare Shamrocks 1-11 1-14 Tralee Parnell’s.

Kenmare cyclist Fenton Curley completes the TransAtlantic Way race on the West Coast of Ireland, finishing in third position on the Setanta course. Family, friends, and colleagues cheered on Fenton and other competitors as they embarked on the TransAtlantic Way Ultra Race which started from the Peace Bridge in Derry City and followed the Wild Atlantic Way around to Cork City. This race is self-supported with no technical or personal backup, so all responsibility lies with the riders alone. Fenton is delighted to have completed the race as ‘third fastest finisher’ and first Irish rider in on the Setanta route in 5 days and 21 hours. As a member of Kenmare Cycling Club and an avid cyclist, Fenton looked forward to this incredible adventure cycling challenge by training consistently and throughout the year worked to weekly schedules for strength and endurance. He was among sixty-one riders taking part in this year’s race and opted for the Setanta designated route of 1700km, which had twenty-nine riders on that route. The race had to be completed in full. As part of the race Fenton arrived in Kenmare but, although this is where he lives, competition rules prohibited him from staying in his own home so ‘home from home’ that night was Brook Lane Hotel where they looked after him, setting him up for his 4am start next morning. Fenton completed the Cu Chulainn route in the 2021 Race. His participation in the Spinneys Dubai 92 Cycle Challenge in February where he achieved first in Cat and the 3-day Cyprus Gran Fondo in April, where he took another Podium with 3rd in Cat for the TT, helped get Fenton into good shape for this year’s Transatlantic Way Ultra Race. Fenton thanked everyone for their amazing support, all those messages really helped along the way, and he’s looking forward to the next adventure!

On the crest of its success in the compact saloon segment, with more than 7,000,000 worldwide sales over the generations, having won a long list of awards including the award for Car Of The Year in 2014, today PEUGEOT is proud to present the All New PEUGEOT. With the first deliveries starting in June, The All New PEUGEOT 308 will be available in 3 grades – The vehicle is the first in the PEUGEOT line up to bear the new PEUGEOT brand coat of arms in a grille entirely dedicated to it. A design and technological evolution, the radar for driving aids disappears behind the coat of arms (radome technology using indium compatible with radar waves), making it the centre piece on the grille. The new PEUGEOT 308 is bolstering itself in its segment and changing its body shape, the 55mm extended wheelbase stretches the silhouette and offers more space for rear passengers while the20mm height reduction combined with a soft-nose visually lengthens the bonnet. The boot volume is now 412 litres with 28 litres of compartmentalised storage space, with the rear seats folded, the maximum load is 1,323 litres. The front headlamps use LED technology from the entry Active grade. Chiselled and slim, they contribute to the dynamics and identity of this new PEUGEOT 308. They are extended by hook- shaped daytime running lights on the front bumper. This light signature reflective of the current PEUGEOT style is recognisable at first glance both by day and by night. On the GT grades, the Full LED headlamps are even thinner and have PEUGEOT Matrix LED Technology, for greater efficiency and safety in everyday use. At the rear, the headlamps use Full LED technology displaying the 3 claws for a modern, brand-specific light signature. The new PEUGEOT 308 will come in 7 shades: Olivine Green, Vertigo Blue, Elixir Red, Pearl White, Ice White, Artense Grey, Perla Nera Black.
