2 | Kenmare News The annual Old Kenmare Graveyard Mass was celebrated on Thursday, 14th July. This year is the fortieth anniversary of the Graveyard Mass and to mark the occasion a plaque recording the history of this sacred place was unveiled.

Good luck Rory on your retirement! Congratulations to very popular Pobalscoil Maths and Science teacher Mr Rory O'Connor on his recent retirement. Rory, who was the First Year Head in recent years, organised an end of year walk up Muxnaw lead by Ms Sheila O'Sullivan with his first year pupils and some of his teaching colleagues last month, and Margaret McCarthy treated them all to some delicious Kenmare Ice-cream on their return. Best wishes to Rory for a long and happy retirement, all at Pobalscoil will miss Rory dearly.

Kerry Film Festival hosted a great evening at Kenmare Golf Course last month with their outdoor screening, and a large crowd of around 250 attended. They will be back in August, so make sure to put it on your ‘To do’ list if you missed it this time.

Kenmare & District Garden Club

There’s rarely a dull moment in this Club. Although we have not had an evening speaker in July and there won’t be one in August either, we have nevertheless been quite active. In the middle of June we had a lovely day out in the Tralee area visiting amongst other places, Liscahane Nursery which had super plants and a return visit to Dhu Varren. We then spent two most enjoyable mornings at beautiful gardens owned by Club members in Kenmare and Castlemaine. This trend will continue in July with proposed visits to 3 Members’ gardens in Sneem and a further garden in Cappanacush. It is fascinating to see our Members’ gardens, now we know why they’re always buying plants on days out! We will be recommencing evening functions in September.

Kerry’s newest interactive tourist attraction, a 12ft Druid, carved from the trunk of a large Monterey Cypress tree and cloaked in copper has been welcomed to its new home; the aptly named Druid’s View at Molly Gallivans Cottage and Traditional Farm in Bonane. The imposing and impressive Druid figure is the result of an exciting collaboration between two artists, wood sculptor Anthony Cornforth and metal sculptor Peter Little. Commissioned by Kerry County Council, the piece replaces a smaller existing druid carved by Anthony in 2002 which had to be removed during recent road improvement works. The original druid was commissioned by Stephen and Frances O’Sullivan, owners of family run, Molly Gallivans Visitor Centre. Located between Kenmare and Glengarriff on the Beara Peninsula, the druid represents the first settlers in the Sheen Valley more than 6000 years ago. To enable visitors to interact and

engage with the sculpture, a camera has been placed on the druid’s staff. Visitors can look

through an eyepiece enclosed in the druid’s cloak and share in the ‘druid’s view’. The druid looks across Sheen valley to the highest peak ‘Barra-Bui’, where a Cairn on the summit marks the resting place of an ancient Chieftain. The camera will soon be linked to Molly Gallivans website and visitors can upload their photos taken with the druid to the attraction’s popular Facebook page. The photos posted to Facebook announcing the arrival of the new druid have already received over 7000 views. Stephen and Frances O’Sullivan indicated how pleased they were to welcome the druid into its new home in the Kingdom. “We’re delighted with the new and enhanced druid. It has been an iconic landmark for Molly Gallivans for many years. The feedback from our visitors is that they love the ability to interact with the new sculpture and see what the druid sees.”

Back to School Costs. In the Seanad this week I brought up the issue of back to school costs for families. These costs have risen by a third since 2012 and are causing parents to go into debt. Social Welfare Schemes are available to those who are struggling financially, such as the Back to School Clothing and Footwear Allowance, if you require information on this scheme please do not hesitate to get in contact with my office. National Anthem Bill. I have introduced legislation in the Seanad to protect the national anthem. Copyright for Amhrán na bhFiann expired in 2012 and the Government have neglected to get it reinstated. The lack of strict copyright for the national anthem leaves this important state symbol exposed to being exploited by companies for commercial purposes. Having copyright in place protects the anthem from being used in an inappropriate fashion. Irish Sign Language Bill. I have also been working on the Irish Sign Language for members of the Deaf Community Bill. It recognises that the language is used as the primary means of communication by over 5,000 members of the deaf community in Ireland. It will also require the State to provide interpreting services for students who use Irish Sign Language. Importantly, it will also require every public body to devise and implement an action plan to promote the use of sign language within the organisation. This legislation is sensible and will help the deaf community to continue

integrating into wider Irish society. I am hopeful that it will receive cross-party support when it comes before the Seanad. Corporate Manslaughter Bill. The Corporate Manslaughter Bill concerns the prosecution of organisations whose actions lead directly or indirectly to the death of those in their care and ensures that they can be held accountable for their negligence. Companies found guilty of the proposed offence would be fined, while the management involved may also face a jail term of up to 12 years. This is particularity relevant in light of the serious issue with the senior management of the Coastguard Service in Dublin who failed to install new communication equipment in Valentia after being advised by the manufacturers that their old equipment was obsolete and liable to catastrophic failure at any time. Need assistance with your passport? Due to a surge in demand the average issuance time for passports has been extended to at least 15 days for even an express passport application. If you plan on travelling in the near future please submit your application with all documentation well in advance of travelling. If you are travelling unexpectedly (e.g. bereavement) and do not have a valid passport we recommend making a Rapid Renewal Passport Appointment in the Dublin Passport Office. This appointment can be booked online on the Passport Office website. New appointments for this emergency booking open

up at 12.30pm each working day however always book out extremely quickly so we advise to be ready to book at exactly when they open. Community and voluntary organisations. There are many community and voluntary organisations that do great work for the local area and anyone who would like to organise a raffle prize of a dinner or lunch voucher in the Leinster House Members Restaurant, please contact my office on 01 618 3830 or email me at Mark.Daly@oireachtas.ie. Assistance for those in mortage difficulty. I have a team of accountants and legal advisers who are willing to help with any mortgage or debt difficulties so please do not hesitate to contact my office on 01 618 3830 or email me at Mark.Daly@oireachtas.ie. A tour of Leinster House. Leinster House is a wonderful place to visit any time of the year. The building is rich in history and visitors get to experience the vibrant atmosphere on busy sitting days. If you are ever in Dublin and would like to take a tour of Leinster House, please feel free to contact Mark’s office on 01 618 3830 or email at Mark.Daly@oireachtas.ie and we would be delighted to help plan your visit. If you have any issues you would like assistance with these clinics are being held in Sean Daly's office 34 Henry Street, please call my mobile or T.D. Gone Fishing

John O’Hare With

The death has just occurred after a long illness of John C Harrington, the man who taught all of us how to fish in the good old days and, taking us young lads under his wing, brought us up to the mountain lakes showing us how to enjoy a day out in the wilderness, or how to catch a sea trout in a Finnihy flood. I could go on and on but it just so happens that he wrote a few pieces for me when the Trout Anglers Federation used to produce a newsletter, and I do not think they were ever printed. John was a good storyteller and poet, he even wrote a song ‘As Gaelige' and entered it for the Eurovision song contest. He was honorary secretary of the Kenmare Trout Anglers Club for more years than I can remember, in his memory I will for this month pass my report over to his memory. I hope you will enjoy his articles and poem. Memories are made of this. Back in the 1950s trout angling in Kenmare was at an all time high. Senior members 120 and juvenile 30 anglers travelled on bicycles or on foot to nearby mountain lakes. The lakes most frequented at this time were the Cameen between Kenmare and Molls Gap, a mountain top panoramic view of Kenmare Bay and Killarney lakes, it was the special outing for young and old anglers. The climb to the lakes was a long journey. With a young angler having his first introduction to these lakes, we reached Carraig Lake and decided to fish. Conditions were good but heavy rain started and we decided to shelter, when it dried we began to collect firewood which consisted of heather and withered furze, and continuous rain made it hard to start the fire. Eventually we got it going and the kettle started to boil, and who should come along but a local sheep farmer saturated from being on the hill since daybreak, this was lambing season in May. We asked him to join us and displayed what sandwiches we both had on a plastic bag. Being a guest we let him begin and poured him a cup of tea. The sandwiches didn't last long and after a good chat Tom the farmer said, “Lads I'll be shortening the road and thanks for the tea and grub I really enjoyed the

party. Do you know lads it was as good as a feed as you would get at the stations.” When he left us we reboiled the kettle and all we had was one sandwich each, however we started fishing and the lake being high the take was brisk. We finished up with about two dozen 8 to 10 ounce trout, my friend Pat was delighted with his days catch. We arrived back in Kenmare quite hungry and afterwards met in the Carnegie Hall where we danced to the strains of Stephen Garvey until 4am. The end of a perfect day. John C Harrington 2003 The Silver King Straight as the tall pine towering towards the sky. Steady as an Eagle when on wing. In the clear waters of Ardtully nearby perchance I spied the Silver King. Mid a shoal of speckled trout that hurried by. Like a silver sword in battle array. He reigned supreme and cast an eye. On a dragonfly who winged his way. John C Harrington 2003 Kenmare, an anglers paradise. Yearly gold medal award winning tidy town and now listed as one of the 20 most desirable retirement places in the world, Kenmare can offer trout, salmon and sea Angling second to none. The introduction to fly and worm angling for young beginners began in the Finnihy River which flows near the town. In the 1950’s seatrout were so plentiful when the weather was in spate that young anglers had one or two trout per rod. This led to the formation of a juvenile club which still exists and has its yearly competition in Looscaunagh lake. The Roughty, Sheen and Blackwater are the main salmon rivers. Kenmare Salmon Club has purchased its own stretch of river at Ardtully. Should you visit the grounds of the old castle you may see John O’Hare with his chocolate coloured labrador ‘ Rolo’, landing net in mouth, as he waits patiently to help his master capture the elusive Silver King. For trout fishing the Clonee Lakes, run by the O'Shea family, have boats for hire on this most splendid of waters. The Kenmare Trout Anglers Club lease Uragh and Gleninchiquin Lakes from the estate. Permits are available for same and you will be rewarded with 6 to 12 eight ounce trout and an unforgettable panoramic view of lakes and mountains. Of course weather conditions have to be favourable. John C Harrington 2003 Ever a gentleman, may he rest in peace. To his wife Sheila, brother Michael, and extended family the Kenmare Trout Anglers Club offer their deepest sympathy.

Bank Holiday Delights at Kilgarvan Show The upcoming August bank holiday weekend will once again see the fantastic event taking place that is the Kilgarvan Show, opening its gates on Sunday, 31st July, at 11am in O’Reilly’s Field in the heart of the beautifully turned out village. Kilgarvan is proud to host what has become a major player in the Irish agricultural show circuit. In its 32nd year, the Kilgarvan Show is an increasingly popular venue for locals and guests from further afield to showcase the best of Munster’s produce and talent. Competitions are not just confined to the agricultural variety and the cliché of there being something for everyone hails true for the Kilgarvan Show. Many summer visitors to our area, particularly those from cities, are amazed at the enterprise, artistry and originality displayed at the Show. The Kilgarvan Show weekend commences on Friday, 29th July, with the popular Children’s Fancy Dress parade on the route between Conserve-A-Sash and MACE, at 7.30 p.m. If wet, the Fancy Dress will relocate to the Community Centre. The big day, of course, is Sunday, 31st July. There will be a wealth of Children’s Amusements such as a bouncy castle, merry-go-round and swing boats for the little ‘uns. These entertainments will be half price for families between 11.30 a.m. and 13.30 a.m., so come early! Aspiring acrobats may find the bungee trampoline more appealing. Magic Delboy will delight with 4 magic shows, whilst Glitter Tattooist Nichollette and Face Painter Dagmara are available for stunning transformations. Entertainment for grown-ups, young at heart, will not come short either. Hilarity is guaranteed by the Tractor Balancing competition that comes with a prize fund of €100, as well as Don’t Buzz The Wire (the Mini Digger version), built by Edward Gibbons of Kilgarvan.

A truly spectacular must-see will be the Stunt Horse Show performed by the Zaporozhian Cossacks from Ukraine, who have exhibited their breath-taking riding skills at festivals in Europe, Asia and Australia. Do not miss their two shows on Sunday! One of the many first-time events at this year’s Show is the Children’s Open Féis, staged in the show grounds at 1 p.m. on the Sunday. There will be a special marquee set up for this event, with a tried and tested dance floor. Margaret Godfrey is available on 087 3670971, for queries and bookings. The ever popular Children’s Sports competitions will be held throughout the day and the Denis P O’Sullivan Perpetual Trophy will be awarded to the Overall Sports Person of the Show. The main focus points of the Kilgarvan show are, of course, the Agricultural Competitions which will commence at 12.30 p.m. This year, there will be no less than 28 classes for dairy cattle, 32 for beef cattle and 39 sheep classes including 2 All-Ireland Championships, an AllIreland Championship Qualifier and a County Championship. For the first time ever, the show will feature unusual looking Zwartbles sheep. There will also be classes for goats and poultry. New for this year will be the Perpetual Trophy For Best Beef Animal in memory of Denis Healy RIP who was a long-time tireless volunteer with Kilgarvan Show. Unfortunately, the Show Committee had to take the decision not to include any horse and pony classes in 2016. Although the equine events are always extremely popular, owners had safety concerns at last year’s show as prolonged rain in the lead-up to the show day had created treacherous footing in the field. Another major competition at Kilgarvan Show is the 25 classes Dog Show, culminating in the final of the Puppy Parlour Kenmare Munster Dog

Crisis looming for Kenmare Mens Shed

"Our landlords have advised us that they must to take back our part of their premises for refurbishing. We understand and accept their reasons and would like to thank them for the consideration they have shown us over the years. Unfortunately this means that we will have to leave the premises by the end of this summer. We are now desperate to find new premises where we can continue to meet and provide services to our members and the public. We have been in contact with local representatives to see if they can assist us. However we are also appealing to the general community - if you know of any premises/site where we could set up a new shed please let us know as soon as possible. There are over 300 Mens Sheds now in the country and Kenmare was one of the first to be set up. There has been a lot of hard work done to get Kenmare Mens Shed operational over the years. To lose this, after all that hard work and effort over the years by so many, would be tragic. Other Sheds have found solutions to the similar problems. For example Castelemaine Mens Shed recently set up in a donated pre-fab, which they sited on a field given over to them on a long lease. Their Facebook page (KC Mens Shed) shows the wonderful efforts they have made to convert it into a great social facility. This is a great example of community effort and help. I am sure Kenmare can do similar. Please put on your thinking caps …we need help. The sooner we have something in place the sooner we can get it up and running-before the season turns and we are facing the winter rains etc. We would prefer to have something as close as possible to the town but are open to any ideas. The importance of the Mens Shed to the members cannot be overstated. It is a safe, welcoming place where men can go to meet, have a cup of coffee, share experiences and work together on projects. It has a very positive effect on members. As we say on our Facebook page Kenmare Mens Shed: “where men in the Kenmare & general area, of all ages & backgrounds, are welcome to socialise & share skills in friendly surroundings. “ You can contact us through Facebook “Kenmare Mens Shed” page or by e-mail at: mensshedkenmare@gmail.com"

Report by Heike O’Sullivan Championship that attracts qualifiers from 24 Munster shows and carries a prize fund of €400. There will also be an All-Ireland Championship Qualifier for Irish Native Breeds, so make sure to bring your well behaved four-legged friends. The official show opening will be performed at 3pm by Minister for Agriculture Michael Creed, and World Dancing Champion, Sarah Godfrey, will also make a popular appearance. Many Side Shows will entertain throughout the day, such as Bonnie Baby, Best Dressed Lady/Gent/Granny, Sheaf Tossing, Tug of War, a Sheep Shearing Demonstration, Pony Rides, Vintage and Threshing Displays, a Raffle etc. There will, of course, be a variety of food served all day, a bar, and a large TV screen showing the Football Quarter Final. Trade Stands will have special show offers, so check them out and support our local businesses! Less than 25% of the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Maths) sector is made of female employees, with research showing that the lack of access to female role models in these industries is one of the biggest contributing factors. The organisers of The Ada Lovelace Initiative encourage technology professionals in Kenmare to register as role models, and Kenmare schools to get involved for school visits this year. O’ConnorScarteen Cllr Patrick

reports...

Building of 22 new Council houses In Kenmare. Kerry County Council recently gave the following update. The Building of the 22 houses sanctioned by Kerry County Council at Ard Bhearna, Gortamullen is to start in April 2017. Leader funding. The Minister for Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs, Heather Humphreys TD, this month signed the first batch of contracts under the LEADER Programme 2014-2020 with Local Action Groups from around the country. Once the contracts have been signed, Local Action Groups, which have been selected to deliver the programme, can begin accepting applications from interested groups and organisations and the €250 million in funding can begin filtering into communities across rural Ireland. As a former Director of South Kerry Development Partnership I have seen first-hand the positive impact the Leader programme has on local communities. If anyone has any questions feel free to contact me at any time. Funding of €282,456 has been provisionally approved for Kerry County Council to take in charge 17 housing. 633 Units in Kerry will benefit by the 17 Estates being taken in charge by the Council thanks to this funding. The housing developments to come under the remit of Kerry County Council in this area thanks to this initiative include Gortamullen, Kenmare and Limewoods, Kilgarvan. This is really great news for housing estates and developments right across the county, Now that these developments will be under the remit of Kerry County Council families can expect to live in high quality developments that are properly serviced. Minister Coveney has said that this initiative should be seen in the context of the Government’s forthcoming Action Plan for Housing. Funding provided through Local Authorities will support the provision of new infrastructure to support the development of high quality homes for all. I will assist with the take over of further estates in the area. Post office changes. An Post are currently pursuing a policy of amalgamating the sorting of post into a few central locations throughout each county. I believe they are not taking into consideration the distances some of our Post offices are from main towns or the costs involved in the changes. Ideally things should be left as they are however An Post are adamant on making the changes. It would be terrible to have a scenario whereby the sorting of post is moved further from Kenmare. We need to keep what we have in rural communities and the moving of the sorting office from Kenmare would also have a negative effect on the greater area. It would also be more difficult for An Post staff. I believe some Post Offices should be given rural isolation status similar to rural schools. I will work with politicians of all sides to campaign to retain our services. On a positive note gladly no Post office has closed in Kerry in the last 6 years and we will campaign to ensure this remains the case. Recently also changes were made by Minister Leo Varadkar which will allow Social

welfare recipients to collect their payments at their local Post office if they so wish. An Post are also to roll out extra services for their network which will improve the viability of Post offices which are currently under great strain. Delay to Macroom By pass. It has come to light from a recent meeting between Cork County Councillors and Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) that although the Macroom bye-pass is on the Capital Plan, other infrastructural projects are taking priority and the bye pass may not start construction until 2021. This is unacceptable. I have called upon Kerry County Council to have a meeting with TII and I will also call upon the Minister for Agriculture Michael Creed who lives in Macroom to do all in his power to progress the project much sooner. Sports Capital Grants. I have the following motion before the July meeting of KCC “That Kerry County Council request the Minister for Transport, Tourism & Sport Shane Ross to retain the Sports Capital Grant for 2017”. Michael Collins Commemoration. The President Michael D Higgins will give this year’s oration at Beal na Blath, (near Crookstown) Co Cork. It will take place at 2pm on Sunday 21st August. The event is open to members of the public. Political Team. I work with Political representatives of all sides for the good of the area, other colleague’s whom I work closely with can be contacted as follows: Deputy Brendan Griffin TD 066 9795666 MEP Sean Kelly 061 468788 Clinics: Available most evenings at 5 Main Street, Kenmare or I can meet people after work in Kenmare, Kilgarvan, Tuosist, Lauragh, Sneem, Tahilla, Blackwater, Templenoe, Bonane. Now in its fifth year, the competition is looking for businesses that have really captured the imagination of shoppers. This year they have changed the categories slightly, and they have replaced best shop window with a category called best visual merchandising. This can be a great stand or blackboard, a beautiful array of flowers or an inventive way of working a counter. They want to see images of what you’re talking about, so email, tweet or facebook shots of what makes you want to buy. They have added a best family run category to the competition to reflect the continuity of service these businesses bring and how the next generation helps them evolve. In all the nominations they want to hear your personal stories about why a certain shop is special to you. Last year they had some 31,000 nominations from readers. As one nominee of Bath and Crafts said, “You leave with your bag heavy, and your heart light.” To nominate this wonderful local shop please follow the link below. www.irishtimes.com/life-and-style/best-shops/nominate

Medical cards and waiting lists for cataracts. I recently raised in the Dail with the Tánaiste the issue of the length of time people have to wait for a Cataract Operations and also and how difficult it is to be awarded a Medical Card. I explained how I actually know people who are going blind while waiting for their cataracts to be removed also the hoops people are being put through to get a medical card they are entitled to. The system has been set up in such a way that they are making it difficult for people to apply in the first instance. If you are having any difficulty with applying for a medical card or waiting from any medical procedure please contact me and I will only be too glad to assist you. European Affairs Committee. I have recently been appointed as Chairman of the Oireachtas Committee on European Affairs. One of the first issues I have been working is the consequences for Ireland following on from England leaving the EU. There is a huge amount of work to be done to ensure that our trade and travel arrangements are kept in order between Ireland and the UK including Northern Ireland. The arrangement for the common travel area has been in existence since 1922. It is an important feature of the close relation between Ireland and the UK and has long established benefits for trade and tourism between our two countries. It operates across a lot of areas including for free movement between Ireland and the UK and access to Social Welfare and is an arrangement that is valid on both islands and is a priority by the Irish Government that this will be maintained. I and the Ministers for European and Foreign Affairs will pursue an agreement to maintain such arrangements in a way that is compatible with both our National Interests and the interest of the European Union. With regard to agriculture and the fallout from Brexit and the decision to leave the EU is one that creates considerable challenges for the Agri Food Service. The UK is by far our largest trading partner and last year we exported almost 5.1 billion of agricultural products and this included more than 1.1 billion in beef products and 970 million in dairy products. Ireland is also the UK’s largest destination for its food export and was worth 3.8 billion last year. This bilateral trade takes place on the basis of harmonised EU rules on animal and public health on labelling. Without complex certification quota limits on custom duties and tariffs and it is underpinned by the vital support of the cap budget to which the UK is a significant net contributor. Given these linkages and as the UK is a net food importer both countries have a strong interest in maintaining a close Agri food trading relationship. In addition the reliance of the Irish Agri Food sector is well recognised and this together with the commercial relationship built up over the years of trading will help us to negotiate our way through the challenges ahead. It is also important to bear in the mind that the precise implications of the referendum outcome will depend on the trade and other arrangements ultimately negotiated between the EU and the UK. These negotiations may take up to two years or longer and over that period of time existing arrangements will continue to apply, The Minister of Agriculture has assured me that his Department has engaged in detailed contingency planning for the possibility of this result and has published a summary of the key actions they are taking following the UK decision. The most immediate concerns for exporter’s centres on EU/Sterling exchange rates. It should also be noted that the fall of sterling against the

euro while significant is not unprecedented. Never less a sustained period of currency volatility could be of concern and in that regard the central bank of Ireland has pre-established contingency plans to deal with market volatility surrounding the referendum result. The Bank will engage with the Department of Finance and individual financial institutions regarding potential risks. Actions by the ECB and other global actors will be monitored closely. The Minister for Agriculture has also asked the relevant agencies including Bord Bia and Enterprise Ireland to provide practical guidance to SME’s. Last week Bord Bia announced a number of measures to support food and drink businesses. These measures covers areas such as managing volatility impacts providing consumers and market insight and deepening customer engagement and extending market reach with the aim in helping companies to maintain their competitiveness. Similar support is also be provided by Enterprise Ireland. The main areas in which potential impacts are foreseen are in relation to tariffs and trade. We must remember that our trading relationship with the UK is not altered in any way until the negotiations process that will dictate the terms and the conditions of the UK departure is completed and in the meantime and as part of the over contingency planning a number of measures have been taken to ensure a sensible coherent approach is adopted, such as the Minister for Agriculture has convened a consultant committee of stake holders which met for the first time last week to ensure a full exchange of information as the negotiations proceed. Also he is ensuring that the response of the relevant agencies is fully coordinated through a contact group established under the Food wise 2025 high level implementation committee and the Department of Agriculture will continue to feed into the central contingency framework being coordinated by the Department of the Taoiseach. Tamsii Scheme. I recently asked the Minster for Agriculture how many people were successful in applying for under the Targeted Agricultural Modernisation Scheme (TAMSII) In response the Minister stated that the number of applications received under the scheme was over 2,900 applications in the first tranche, over 2,200 in the second tranche and 2,000 in the third tranche. As urgent approvals were requested in some cases, 1,100 part approvals in respect of dairy and low emission slurry spreading equipment issued. Full approvals have issued in over 2,400 cases to date and approvals continue to issue on an ongoing basis. In respect of payments it is expected that the payment claim facility will be available in the coming weeks. I have been pushing this very hard with the Minister as I have dozens of cases at present that I am trying to sort out so if you are in trouble with any farm payment do not hesitate to contact my office. Kilgarvan Agricultural Show. The new Minister for Agriculture Michael Creed has agreed to an invitation that I sent to him to officially open the Kilgarvan Agricultural Show on Sunday the 31st of July 2016. The Show committee are delighted that the Minister acknowledges the importance of the Kilgarvan Show by officially agreeing to open it. I am glad that the Minister acknowledges the importance of the Kilgarvan Show by agreeing to come and officially open it on the day. Passports. Now that we are in the midst of holiday season please check your passport is in date as there are currently huge delays in processing passports. Local politicians lobby An Post re centralisation of sorting service On Monday July 4th, Mr. Angus Laverty, who is the An Post Public Affairs Manager, came down from Dublin to explain to local post masters, politicians and post persons An Post's proposal to centralise all the mail sorting to one location. The meeting was arranged by Michael Healy-Rae. Politicians that were in attendance were Cllr. Johnny Healy-Rae, Cllr. Dan McCarthy and Cllr. Patrick Connor Scarteen.

Cllr. Johnny Healy-Rae

Cllr. Dan McCarthy

Sneem, Lauragh, Kenmare and Kilgarvan post offices were represented. The An Post Manager explained that our area was one of the few last remaining places of the country where sorting had not been centralised. He clearly stated that An Post's position was as follows, they want to be located at a central unit in Kenmare. If this does not work, Kilgarvan would be their second option. After that, the other options available to them to consider would be Glenflesk or indeed, Killarney. Michael Healy-Rae asked if it would be possible that all our four post offices could just be left alone and as we are. He flatly refused this suggestion saying that it would not and could not happen. Very good suggestions were made by Cllr. Johnny Healy-Rae who insisted that the move should be costed by An Post as he was of the firm belief that this move would actually cost them money rather than save money. Also, Cllr. Dan McCarthy made a very good suggestion in saying could it possibly happen that this whole proposal would be shelved for a period of three or four years and again Mr. Laverty indicated that he did not think this would be possible as he believed this change would happen if, not by the end of this year, by the start of 2017. Despite concern from everyone, it certainly looks as if the sorting of mail in our area will be centralised. Post people who have to work delivering the mail are very worried about the extra time involved in travelling especially if the suggestion of finishing up in Killarney was to come into play as it would be totally ridiculous for a person delivering post back in Lauragh or in Glenflesk or Sneem to have to travel as far as Killarney to sort the mail. It is most unfortunate that An Post management have entered into this whole process and probably the biggest shock that we all got on the night was when we were told by the An Post Manager was that the union representing the post people have agreed, signed off and have, in his words "been paid" for this move a number of years ago. When I asked him to explain what this meant, he said it was done and agreed as part of a pay deal agreement agreed by the union. Any of the people present at the meeting that night were not aware of this fact and I can't see how the unions could have agreed to such a move when it is ridiculous and detrimental to not only our post offices but to the people who have to work everyday delivering post to houses. I thank everyone who came and supported our local post offices on the night as at least management knows that we are concerned and worried about these future changes. Michael Healy Rae TD

Behind the Scenes at The Kilgarvan Show Writing my article on this year’s Kilgarvan Show, I got very curious to know just how much organisation goes into staging this big event. Helen O’Sullivan, Chairperson of the Kilgarvan Show Committee, kindly took time out of her busy schedule to let me have a look behind the scenes of one of Munster’s best agricultural shows. “The Kilgarvan Show is running since 1984,” said Helen, “and we’re proud that it only had to be cancelled twice: In 2001 because of the Foot & Mouth Disease, and once due to bad weather. The cancellations were absolutely heart-breaking for the Committee and our many Volunteers after so many months spent on planning the show.” I asked Helen, how soon after a show plans for the following year’s spectacle are made. Helen explained, “It all starts in October, when we start liaising with the Irish Shows Association (ISA) as to our eligibility to hold National Qualifiers and Finals. Our Show Committee agrees on what competitions should be run, and whether we can afford to extend our range of side shows etc.” “Without our sponsors there simply wouldn’t be a Kilgarvan Show. Lots of businesses from the greater Kenmare / Kilgarvan / Killarney area are supporting our show and they deserve a massive Thank You. We are so grateful for the generous contributions of money and raffle prizes, because although our Committee and our

Supporters work on a voluntary basis, it costs on average €32,000 to run our show for the day.” Helen went on to describe that, once the show grounds have been confirmed, Judges for all show categories need to be sourced. Up to ten Judges are required and it can take up to 100 phone calls to find Judges available on the day. The show then has to book and pay for the Judges’ accommodation, travel expenses and fees. Next, rosettes and trophies for all show classes are ordered. These alone cost in excess of €2,000 every year. After delivery, it takes on average six hours to order and organise these prizes. Other expenses include night security guards for the show grounds, an Order of Malta ambulance, a local radio outside broadcast unit, marquee and toilet hire and much more. A Department of Agriculture official attends the show and inspects all cattle and horse passports, and animal movement permits. “The show actually holds a Herd Number to ensure all participating farm animals are legit on the day. You can imagine the paperwork involved in this alone,” sighed Helen. Once the show is advertised, entry forms and fees start pouring in to the show office. Show Secretary Elizabeth Kelleher ably processes all entries in readiness for the day of the show. A separate Field Committee starts

Report by Heike O’Sullivan setting up the show grounds from the Monday before the show, and dismantling of marquees, pens and show rings takes up much of the Monday after. Show Day starts early for the Committee, up to 15 Stewards and over 70 Volunteers, many of whom might not be finished before 11 p.m. On the days following the show, the Committee is busy sending prize monies to the deserving winners, paying suppliers and sending qualifier details to the respective Championship Final venues. If and when the Kilgarvan Show turns a profit, the Show Committee likes to give back to the community. “In 2014,” said Helen, “we were able to support Kilgarvan Tidy Towns, Kenmare Macra, Kilgarvan National School, Little Acorns and others. Sadly, in 2015, the show made a loss because of the bad weather.” Helen concluded, “As you can see, many months of work go into what we think is a great community event. It is immensely gratifying when huge crowds show up and enjoy themselves. I really hope that the Kilgarvan Show will be well supported by locals and tourists again this year, because it gives the Committee the drive to start all over again in October.” The Kilgarvan Show Committee clearly makes an immense effort in giving the locality a fabulous day out. Now it is up to you to show your support, appreciation and encouragement to all the Volunteers bitten by the show bug. The Kilgarvan Show, Sunday, 31st July, from 11 a.m. in O’Reilly’s Field.

Parish comes together to celebrate Lauragh Church's 150th Anniversary Lauragh Church was built in 1866 by Father Callaghan McCarthy a native of Ballyhar, Firies; he was parish priest of Tuosist from 1834 till his death in 1876. Fr McCarthy, came to Tuosist in 1834 with his nephew Charlie McCarthy. At that time the old church in Lauragh had a thatched roof. Fr McCarthy built the present Church

in 1866, using donations from people abroad and voluntary labour from the parishioners. St.Kilian's Church was originally a stone building which was reroofed in 1963 and the walls were pebble dashed. Fr McCarthy travelled around the parish by pony and trap up to his death in 1876; he is buried inside the church. The

grave is marked with a marble plaque on the left hand side of the church in the front rows not far from the altar. To this day members of the McCarthy family, grandchildren of Charlie McCarthy who arrived in 1834, continue to serve as caretakers in the church. pics Mary O'Neill Bishop Ray Browne, Sally McCarthy, Kathleen O'Sullivan and Fr. ASK YOUR PHARMACIST Enjoying sunshine without harming your skin

with Christine Bender-Pototzki After another dull Irish winter and a very wet spring it’s only natural that we all want to spend a lot of time outside to soak up the rays of light and warm temperature in summer. Remember however to protect your skin and to avoid excessive exposure and burning as clinical studies have shown that sunburn nearly doubles the risk of Malignant Melanomas, the most serious of skin cancers. Bearing in mind that each year over 8000 cases of skin cancer are diagnosed in Ireland, it becomes more and more important to take the following precautions to protect your skin. One of the easiest things to do to protect the skin from UV rays is to cover it with clothes, e.g. wearing a shirt with collar and sleeves. To give shade to your face, neck and ears don’t forget to slap on a hat. When the sun is at its strongest between 11am and 3pm, stay cool in the shade. Wear UV-blocking wrap-around sunglasses as the eyes can be damaged by UV rays which could eventually lead to skin cancer. This applies to children as well as adults. Always apply a sunscreen, - that means SPF 15 or higher including UVA protection - and don’t forget to put it on your ears, neck, bald patch, hands and feet. And apply your sunscreen generously, approx. 35 ml for an adult and 15 ml for a child to cover the whole body. Put the cream or lotion on 30 minutes before going outside and reapply every two hours. Babies under one year should not be exposed to direct sunlight at all, also do not use sunscreen on them unless sun exposure is really unavoidable. Always make sure that your baby wears protective clothing including a hat and use a parasol on the buggy. As the child grows, UV protection habits should become routine as brushing teeth. Only use paediatric sunscreens on children as adult sunscreens are not suitable. Last but not least, never forget that a person’s lifetime risk of developing skin cancer is strongly affected by sun exposure during the first fifteen years of life, so always take special care to protect your children. If you would like to know more about sun protection call into McSweeney Pharmacy Kenmare and we will be more than happy to answer any query you may have.

Noël Coward will be there and Shirley Valentine and who knows who else might drop in. Kenmare is a classy town. It's suited to a classy festival. Not a big brassy, sick in the streets, loud mouthed excuse for a drinking session that other places might get away with, but a festival to impress a lady. That's more up our street. SMALL ROADS festival of Theatre and Dining fits Kenmare. Did you notice how they put no capital letter on "festival" because neither Fine Dining nor Brilliant Theatre require whooping and hollering keeping the neighbours awake all night, do they! And nobody's throwing big bucks at SMALL ROADS. That would be tasteless and defeat the purpose. This is an annual event commencing this October amongst ourselves and spreading gently out into the world through good press and enthusiastic word of mouth to all who appreciate great theatre and just love to discuss interesting themes over the evening meal. Do I sound like a snob? I'm sorry about that. But do come. Noël Coward will be there and Shirley Valentine and who knows who else might drop in.

McCarthy ....Reports

Post offices. At a recent meeting where I along with the other local councillors met with representatives of An Post regarding the amalgamation of the sorting offices of the Kenmare area, I asked An Post to post-pone any changes they may wish to implement for a minimum of 3 years as I feel that these changes would have serious repercussions on the post offices in rural areas. Signage. I have recently highlighted the importance and urgency that Kerry County Council along with the relevant bodies erect adequate and appropriate signage on roads to advise drivers of dangers such as height and weight restrictions along with speed limits. Parking in Kenmare Town. I again asked Kerry County Council to address the issue of lack of parking in Kenmare town and the feasibility of acquiring a site in the Bell height region to help resolve this issue. Seating at Kenmare pier. Through my councillors allocation I was given the opportunity to seek funding for the purchase of seating which was recently installed by the suspension bridge. I hope that these will help people relax, unwind and enjoy the magical scenery this town has to offer. Kenmare Macra. Congratulations to Kenmare Macra who lately held a fundraiser for the Kerry Cork health link service. I was honoured to be MC for the night which was great entertainment until I was drafted on to the table to be beautified. It was great to be part of this fundraiser which was for such a worthy cause which I am sure unfortunately touches all of our lives. Emergency services. I would like to heartily thank all the members of the emergency services for their timely response to the recent rescue in Inchamore. The quick thinking of two brave young girls Erika Lynch and Kaia Steadman to alert the Jays father of the accident helped save this young boys life. Ring of Kerry cycle. Well done to all who took part in the recent ring of Kerry cycle, which yet again was another great success. Farming. A previous motion I raised in Kerry County Council regarding the issue of animals with one tag being prohibited from been sold in a mart was raised recently in the Seanad. The Minister of Agriculture ha promised to meet with me to discuss my proposal further. Clinics. I am available every day in Kenmare Mart. I also hold clinics in south and west Kerry throughout the month. Cllr Dan Mc Carthy, Kilcurrane East, Kenmare 087-6846513 / 087-2224411 (work number)

‘Full Circle’ now open at Carnegie Arts Centre ‘Full Circle’ opened at Carnegie Arts Centre on 1st July 2016. It signals Corina Duyn’s return to Kenmare, the Artist's first home in Ireland 27 years ago. This month long exhibition will bring the visitor on a journey of discovery through imaginative sculptures of birds, roots and mystical figures, and finely woven tapestries. Her deep connection and appreciation of nature is ever present in her art and in her (four) books, all of which are available during the exhibition. Her most recent publication ‘Into the Light, a book-in-a-box,’ was described as ‘a hug in a box’ by a young cancer patient. Sister Stan expressed in a recent talk, “..Into the Light is not just an ordinary book, it is a deeply spiritual, inspirational work. The story of challenges overcomes through courage; of fear overcome by hope, of darkness overcome by light ... It makes for an extraordinary presentation.” To make the works accessible to many, there are postcards, bookmarks, books, prints, as well as a secret-auction for some of the sculptures. Tuosist GAA Club Honours 1975 Winning Murphy Cup Team pic Mary O'Leary Tuosist's winning Murphy Cup team of 1975 were recently honoured by their club at a special event to mark the occasion at Con's Restaurant, Dawros. This was the clubs first ever title and was all the more remarkable when one considers that the club had only been in existence little over two years and also football in the Kenmare District was at an all time high with the senior team winning the County Championship the previous year. Club Chairman Michael O'Sullivan paid tribute to their success and gave a special mention to Freddie McCarthy, Noelie O'Brien, Peter O'Sullivan and team manager & Chairman John Healy who sadly are no longer with us, however it was great to see them represented by family members on the night. Mick Granville of Templenoe, who in his role as the then District Board Chairman had presented the Murphy Cup trophy in 1975 to winning Tuosist captain Stephen O'Shea was guest of honour for the occasion, other distinguished guests included Michael and Mary Carey Kenmare, Michael had refereed the drawn game with Kilgarvan and along with Mick, both have given a lifetime of service to the board.

Finally getting around to all our ‘Thank you’s’ after our fantastic weekend at Féile! Firstly, I'd like to thank the 23 panel members of the U14 team who acquitted themselves so very well, behaved themselves impeccably throughout, were very welcoming to our guests and had lots of fun, they didn't come away with any silverware but I believe they made some lifelong friends and have many happy memories to take from their weekend, so thank you girls and their mentors Rosaleen Cusack, Niamh Níc Gearailt and Angela Brosnan for all your hard work preparing for the weekend from training hard, making posters, baking, fundraising and of course playing some super football, well done all. I'd like to say thanks to those who hosted the girls from Naomh Eoin, Myshall, Carlow, we received a lovely message saying ‘how well they had been looked after, feeling so welcome and at home’, so well done! Thanks to Inter Kenmare Soccer Club for the use of their facilities, when they were approached they didn't even hesitate in giving us permission to use the clubhouse as our base. Thanks to Margaret and Rose from Kenmare Ice

A great night was had by all, with much reminiscing. The club would like to thank all those who made long journeys for the event, thanks also to Michelle and the staff of Con's Restaurant for the great service, to Jim Callanan for providing music and of course Anita O'Driscoll for the beautiful celebration cake. The full Tuosist winning panel included Noelie O'Brien(R.I.P) Cummers, Paddy O'Shea-Luke Bunaw, Michael O'Sullivan-Greene Killaha West, P.J. Cream, our jersey sponsors, who also provided beautiful ice cream to our girls and our host team in Kenmare while Margaret made the journey to Millstreet to provide more ice cream to the girls and mentors. Thanks to the Ring of Kerry Golf Club for providing a wonderful spread for both teams and supporters on Saturday evening, the food was delicious with plenty to go around. Thanks to Nora Crowley for her magnificent art work, designing posters, getting them to and back from all the schools while also sourcing prizes for them. Thanks to the parents who drove to the games and those who supported the girls, they enjoyed playing in front of a crowd, maybe it's something that could be continued! Thanks to the members of our club and everyone else who made sandwiches, joined us in the parade or helped in anyway, special mention for Nora-Mae O'Brien for helping out with training. Thank you to our club Féile committee who put in the extra hours coming together for meetings to ensure the weekend went well, it most definitely paid off, it was an excellent

weekend, enjoyed by all. Thanks to Derry Murphy, SuperValu Kenmare, for allowing us his shop space for fundraising and displaying the lovely posters. To Whyte's Centra and Hallisey's Cash and Carry for their donations, much appreciated. Thanks to Donal Barry, LGFA, and Tom Keane for the Trojan work they put into the weekend. Lastly, I would like to sincerely thank Niamh Níc Gearailt for the amount of work she put into Féile, she reluctantly took on the job as co-ordinator last January, I'm not sure if it grew on her, but she embraced it and I think it's fair to say, it did pay off, you did an outstanding job, well done. Thank you also, for bringing your Youthreach students for a day of teambuilding which the girls loved, now you've shown your talents Niamh we'll be calling on you more often! As Chairperson of Inbhear Scéine Gaels it was definitely a highlight to be involved in Féile Peile na nÓg, the club spirit we have is unbelievable, I'd like to say a massive ‘Thank you’ to all. Kenmare News | 31 Kenmare Rowing and Boat Club enjoyed great success at the prestigious and highly competitive Cork Regatta held at the National Rowing Centre last month. Eimear Crowley, Templenoe, competing in her second only sculling race, performed admirably in the J16 single scull category. Seventeen year old, Georgia O’ Brien, Bonane, buoyed up by, and gaining confidence from her wonderful performance on Saturday, when she came second in the Senior Women’s’ Lightweight category, rowed the race of her life on Sunday to upset the odds and a very fancied array of talented rowers to win the J18A category. Georgia dealt admirably with the very difficult weather conditions to record a time of 8 mins, 25.585 seconds for the 2000 metre course defeating a field of 48 scullers to win by half a second. Georgia’s performances are more noteworthy when one considers that she began her single sculls endeavours last September being involved with a very promising J16 Quad for 10 months before that. Georgia’s natural talent, her competitive mind-set and strength of character have been expertly supervised and developed by her Coach, Noel Casey, from Sneem who deserves great credit for her progress. Training five days a week for one and a half hours per session, following a very specific programme Georgia is benefitting hugely from Noel’s expertise and vast rowing experience. Her strength endurance and cardiovascular fitness has improved no end over the winter and her rowing technique and boat speed has greatly improved when Noel changed emphasis from the rowing machines and gym sessions to work on the water. It is very satisfying and encouraging to see their progression to competing with the best of Irish Rowing. Georgia, her club mates and coach are great ambassadors for a small club with relatively meagre resources. They are proof that with talent, commitment and top class coaching, great things are possible. May they continue to be an inspiration and template for younger people who have recently begun to row with the club.

Georgia O’Brien and Eimear Crowley. Georgia O’Brien and her No.1 supporter, the great Johnny Tuohy. Congratulations to Kilgarvan Athletes Christine McCarthy and Rhona Randles who were selected to represent Munster in the prestigious Tailteann Games this summer. This competition brings together all the best U17 athletes in Ireland and is by selection only. Christine will also be representing Kerry in the National League this summer, and both girls have qualified for the National Community Games finals in August. The future is looking bright for these girls !

24 year old Kenmare man, Barry Healy, moved to London last Summer to start his coaching career in Islington boxing club. Barry used to box with Kenmare Boxing Club when he was a child and started coaching with Kenmare more than 4 years ago. Speaking to the Kenmare News Barry said, “I got asked around Christmas time by Islington Boxing Club if I wanted to join another coach to go to Sri Lanka, coaching boxing and setting up a camp for 10 days to coach children and other coaches in a school called Narandenyia Central College, in a town called Kamburupitiya. “ There was very bad poverty there, the school was build up of shacks, and the kids were very respectful from the start. On the first day we had a small ceremony in front of all the students and coaches that were doing the boxing course and the principal. We were also joined by the Minister of Sport. There were 2000 students, but unfortunately we could only train 120 students in the camp. “We did 3 sessions a day, one in the morning with the older group, another with around 90 juniors at lunchtime then one more with the seniors in the evening. “The 10 days went very fast and it was an amazing experience, we felt like we set a good routine and and methods of training for the kids and coaches. What I really enjoyed was helping them learn English through boxing. “On the last day we had another ceremony, and this time there was 2500 at the ceremony. It was amazing, they all sang us the National Anthem and gave me some lovely gifts to keep for life. We gave a selected few of the kids that had completed the course Islington Boxing Club T shirts, and they all got a medal and a certificate. We travelled across the country and saw some amazing scenes.” Barry concluded by saying that he will be returning to Sri Lanka to the same school, but for a month in February 2017.

Kenmare Bay Swim Club goes from strength to strength Kenmare Bay Swim Club is a club going from strength to strength and has had many achievements this year, becoming a club with novice to national swimmers, with Iarlaith Hayes and Illan wall attending Division 2 Nationals earlier this month. Members achievements include; A Grade Munster swimmers Aishling Foley, Eimear Crowley Iarlaith Hayes, Illan wall B Grade Munster swimmers David Ciuciu, Cliona Daly Tania Salvador-McCormack Neasa Wall

C Grade Munster swimmers Amber Doran, Jasmine Durkin Hiudai Hayes, Kai Verdakal Tom Kelly, Caoimhe Cronin Ayla O'Neill, Noel Foley Tommy Arthur, Tommy Meagher Tara Cronin, Rachel O'Sullivan Anu Hayes, Holly Arthur Julia Salvador-McCormack Ben Merrigan, Cillian Daly C Grade Novice swimmers Orla McSwiney, Fiachra Wall Jack O'Sullivan, Jack Downing Mika Fitzmaurice, Joshua Foley Clara McElligott, Velizara Petrova This year the club took the big step of restructuring the club and it has

been a huge success. For whatever reason a culture of fear in competing at galas had grown, so they set about changing this notion. Going to a gala in swimming is no different then going to a match, it gives a focus and a reason to train, improve and creates a goal. The aim for the members is to participate in a sport for enjoyment, but that also helps them to learn and develop, enabling them to feel safe and valued as individuals within the club structure. There are four different levels within the club, with only the highest level swimming in the mornings.

The success and growth the club has had this year is remarkable, and swimmers and parents should be very proud. The club expressed their gratitude to coaches Laura Meagher and Colm Horgan and gave a special thanks to Kenmare Bay Hotel and Resort for their ongoing support, and the local community for their support through fundraising. The club also acknowledged the work and commitment of their former Chairperson, Mari Wall, who is relocating this year. To find out more please contact 087 0692802 / kenmareswimclub@gmail.com

Thanksgiving Novena to the Sacred Heart. Dear Heart of Jesus, in the past I have asked for many favours. This time I ask you this very special one. (Mention favour) Take Dear Heart of Jesus and place it within your own broken heart where your father sees it. Then in his merciful eyes, it will become your favour not mine. Amen. Say this prayer for three days, promise publication and favour will be granted. Never known to fail (PV)
