Tom O'Connor was a selector with the All Ireland winning Kerry team in 1997 when Paidi O' Sé (RIP) was manager, beating Mayo in the 1997 final. The team were honoured at a Jubilee celebration in Croke Park, great to win again 25 years later! Tom trained all six of the Kenmare and Templenoe players that were on the Kerry team and panel while they were playing football for Pobalscoil down through the years and is still involved in training the school teams today. Tom is pictured with a selection of the 1997 Kerry players along with his daughters, Carol and Siobhan, on their way into Croke Park. Congratulations to Jane O Brien who was one of only two Irish technical officials in the recently held Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, a huge honour. Jane is the Chair of Triathlon Ireland’s technical committee and in 2018 was awarded the prestigious Caroline Kearney award for her contribution to the sport.

A huge thank you to all who participated in the Sunset to Sunrise walk which raised €1,205 for the Aoife O Sullivan Oncology Education Fund on the night, with thanks also to the people who donated directly to the fund via the idonate page. All funds raised go directly to advance the training of nurses in cancer treatments. Thanks to Clodagh, Frances and Stephen for their assistance in organising the event, the hospitality and generosity of Molly Gallivans is always appreciated as is the kindness of people who supplied such a variety of tasty treats. We appreciate the support of everyone who assisted on the night.

"Just from a personal point of view, in 1964 my father was a selector for Kerry against Galway in the All-Ireland final. The night before the game he had a pain in his chest, wouldn't go to the doctor. He went to the game the following day and was dead on Tuesday. Kerry-Galway matches to me always bring back this memory. My father never saw his three sons play. The three of us have 19 All-Ireland medals and his two grandsons today Killian and Adrian have two more. He would have been a proud man. 21 All-Ire land senior football medals into his house. It's just a special day."

Pat Spillane speaking after Kerry’s All Ireland win.

New Stables Restaurant wins by a nose!

It’s hard to imagine that Sheen Falls can get any better but the addition of The Stable adds an exciting new dimension. Hearing that the The Stables Brasserie would be showing the All Ireland final we made our way to the beautifully converted restau rant at Sheen Falls which now offers an eclectic all-day menu and the fabulous hospitality that we have all come to expect from this wonderful hotel. Showcasing local and seasonal produce, the menu offers deceptively simple food perfectly executed and, whether you are meeting a friend for coffee, looking for a light lunch or a full three-course meal with wine, you’ll find a warm welcome, fantastic food and a gorgeous dining space with plenty of corners for cosy chats. Children are well catered for too and the deserts are to die for! After an afternoon of flawless service and food, and of course that all important All Ireland result, we’ve been back several times since. Tom and John O’Connor grew up near Blackwater, adopting the name ‘Scarteen’ from the townland where they were born. The family owned and operated a bakery and grocery shop at 5 Main Street. Tom and John were both active members of the Irish Republican Army and fought in many engagements against the Crown Forces during the War of Independence between 1919 and 1921. They were among those who listened to Michael Collins speaking at a pro-Treaty meeting in April 1922 and were motivat ed to join the new army of the Free State. As experienced combat ants they rose through the ranks, Tom to the rank of Brigadier General and John to the rank of Captain. Kenmare was among the large towns which came under the control of the Free State Army during August 1922. The O’Con nor-Scarteens led a large landing of over 200 troops by boat at Kenmare on August 11th and seized control of the town, many local men enlisting under their command. A few days later, Tom commanded a seaborne army detachment which captured Caher siveen and Waterville. Anti-Treaty forces in south Kerry launched an audacious attempt to recapture Kenmare. On September 9th 1922 as the republican assault on Kenmare began, at about 7am a group of republicans burst into the bakery as Tom and John slept upstairs. John was shot as he came down the stairs and Tom was dragged for his bed and shot in the head. Tom was just 20 and his brother, 25. One hundred years later the O’Connor Scarteens are still heavily involved in Politics in Kerry. Tom and John’s brother, Timothy, served on Kerry County Council alongside another brother, Pat, who also served in Dáil Eireann and Seanad Eireann. Pat along with his son, Michael, and grandson, Patrick, have 74 years unbro ken service on Kerry County Council. Cllr Patrick Connor-Scarteen was Mayor of Kerry/Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council in 2020- 2021 and was elected Cathaoirleach of the Kenmare Munici pal District in June 2022.

I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate our local Kerry heroes on their All Ireland win in recent times. Stephen, Seanie, Killian, Adrian, Tadgh, Gavin and Kilgarvan’s very own Donal Down who were all part of Kerry’s fantastic win over Galway to capture Sam Maguire. It was particularly special on the Wednesday when Sam Maguire stopped off in the village of Kilgarvan with the members of the winning team standing for photos, signing autographs and spend ing time with the young children who came to see them. We are very lucky in the greater Kenmare area to have so many talented young men representing us at the highest level of the GAA.

The Government’s push to control what cars people can own and drive is in my opinion outright police state madness. Banning the sale of new petrol and diesel cars is another attack in particular rural ways of living under the guise of net zero emissions by 2050. The Governments targets for EV’s includes an initial figure of 195,000 by 2025, followed by a further 750,000 by 2026-2030. These figures are unrealistic considering the ongoing difficulties in manufacturing, distributing and the penning of families to their collars due to the ever worsening cost of the living crisis. It is crazy to proceed with this policy at a time when the Commissioner for Regulation of Utilities and Eirgrid are warning that Ireland must reduce electricity demands or face blackouts for this coming winter and subsequent months after. For instance the Government’s second target would require that almost every vehicle purchased here between 2026 and 2030 need or second hand would have to be an EV. This target is not practical as no second hand market exists for EV’s. The new options are expensive for most people and the Government needs to wake up to these realities. The Government mandated policy proposals are nothing more than another massive climate tax on Irish Citizens undermining the livability of our Regional and Rural Communities. With Irish Families already facing an unprece dented cost of living crisis while having to decide between eating and heating. The Governments strategy of forcing citizens to now buy electric vehicles which simultaneously fail to serve their needs and are unaffordable will only make a bad situation a lot worse. Even before the current cost of living crisis most Irish families could not afford to purchase an electric vehicle as their next car. Typically it is only those with high incomes who have shown a willingness to purchase them to date. The Fianna Fail, Fine Gael and the Green Party target is pressurising families and people to have one million such vehicles on Irish roads by 2030 but the cheapest electric family car today costs approx €38,000 while a second hand petrol or diesel can be purchased for as little as several hundred euros. This policy places enormous financial pressure on families. Further more the Government also plans to hit already strapped tax payers with bills to pay for charging stations which in effect is a way to subsidise the industry and the more affluent who are already own these cars. The EV lobby and electricity companies and wealthy corporate investors are seeking millions of euro in subsidies from all levies of the Irish Govern ment for things such as charging stations and associated infrastructure which is robbing from the poor and giving to the rich. Outside of Ireland’s 5 major cities where public transport is limited or disjointed a car is essential for Social and Economic purposes. Thus limiting the purchase of such cars to a limited range electric power is a massive attack on all Rural Residents. Meanwhile this is all occurring with constituents of mine who already own electric cars are telling me that they are disregarding these cars for diesel and petrol models due to a lack of charging points broken existing ones or unreliable battery range issues. The strategy to ban the sale of cheaper petrol and diesel cars is a blatant offense on all Rural communities impacting the least well off motorists. I and my colleagues in the Rural Independent Group believe that this policy is aligned with the Government’s punitive urbanisation policy agenda, it also highlights the lobby ing influence of corporate elites, consequently I and my colleagues have called on the Government to abandon any policy proposal which would force Irish people to buy expensive electric cars proving to be expensive to charge as the electricity prices continue to soar. The time has come for the Government to row back on these elite policies, give the people a break, cease trying to exert control over people and recognise the financial burdens they are under. The programme by Emily and Jane Sullivan, Heather Brooks and Alicja Cetnar, all performing free of charge, included both classical and contempo rary pieces and raised €1300 in aid of the wheelchair access and accessible toilet plans for the church. This was the only opportuni ty in Kenmare to enjoy these hugely talented young people playing so beautifully - their scheduled appearance as part of the Kenmare Festival was disappointingly cancelled by the organisers at very short notice. The Summer Fete held in July raised a further €4,066 and we very much appreciate your support of our fundraising endeavours.

Kenmare Golf Club Our Clubhouse was officially opened on Sunday August 7th, which is the culmination of two years and two months of painstaking work by everybody at Kenmare GC. Cornelius “Sonny” O’Connor performed the opening ceremony with our club officers, and was ably assisted by Jim Long (Golf Ireland President-elect), and Larry McCarthy, Uachtarán Chumann Lúthchleas Gael. Rev Michael Kavanagh and Fr. George Hayes blessed the building, and Eoin Finnegan and Dan Lucey (with Guests) created a mighty atmosphere for the day with some great entertainment. The common theme of the day, and repeated by all the speakers was of community. This building would not have been completed without the assistance of the fantastic community in Kenmare and surrounding areas, and this is appreciated by all – we hope to spend the next 119 years of the club repaying this goodwill!
