Dear Editor

Just back from a wonderful week in Kenmare. As a family holiday we love Kenmare we go there a few times a year but something happened last week that made it so special. We were out for Dinner in Foleys Townhouse myself my wife and my special needs son. Matt has cerebral palsy and is a wheelchair user. Halfway through dinner we were told that our dinner was paid for, there was a lovely couple just across from us had paid for our dinner. The lady that served us was saying after they also had someone with special needs, what a lovely gesture, we will never forget this. This is why Kenmare is so special for us. Ted and family Called into Tom Crean’s earlier today with my two daughters, one of whom had just completed a school project on the great explorer. You can only imagine their excitement to meet his granddaughter who had also literally followed in her grandfathers footsteps to Antarctica! Despite it being a very busy lunchtime in the restaurant Aileen graciously spent time with the girls, reigniting their passion in Tom Crean. What a great role model she is to the next generation of young women, it was such an honour for them to meet her. Oh, and the seafood chowder was without doubt the best I have EVER tasted. Neighbours Joe Looney and Pat Joe Cremin meet for a drink on the side of the road while cutting their bounds ditch. Bonane Community Council have decided to mark the 100th anniversary of the war of independence. Their intention is to create a short documentary/film on Captain John Flynn and the Bonane volunteers and their involvement in the Kerry Flying Column. Bonane native Matt Sullivan PO has kindly volunteered his skills and time to make the film and the film will be a non-profit project. However, costs including graphics, photo restoration, post production editing, costumes, historical reconstructions and artist sketches will need to be covered. They are inviting you to support this project with any financial contribution you can make. The film will serve as evidence for the strength and sacrifice the people involved made in the battle for the community’s freedom. https://gofund.me/94f9592b Kenmare and District Garden Club Covid restrictions continue to hamper the return to monthly meetings in the Gateway, Kenmare, so there will not be a meeting there in September as anticipated. It was disappointing too that the intended Friendship day in the Little Church, Sneem, and the festivities in St. Patricks church, Kenmare were also cancelled, where there had been the promise of a few choice plants for sale. In the meantime, the committee are continuing to arrange outdoor visits to lovely gardens in the area. Garden members Aly Peh and Neal Cahill had their delightful garden, The Water Margin, open to huge success over the August Bank Holiday. Their garden is one of several featured in Shirley Lanigan’s book, The Open Gardens of Ireland, so there is plenty to go and see, when the non stop weeding becomes too much of a chore! Kenmare Bay Swim Club Kenmare Bay Swim Club would like to say a fond farewell to the Merrigan swim family. The Merrigan children all worked their way up through the levels at the Kenmare Bay Swim Academy from a young age and, once they had reached level 8, they tried out for the club. As with most parents who have children in sports, Mike and Liz got involved and soon became invaluable to the running of the club. As head coach Mike brought the club to new heights with multiple provincial and national medal titles, and Liz worked tirelessly behind the scenes helping to run the club, especially on the very successful fundraisers. Who knew when they got married in Kenmare Bay Hotel all those years ago, that their children would be back to swim in the Kenmare Bay Swim Club? We wish the Merrigan family every good wish on their new venture in Cork city and with Dolphin Swim Club. We will see you on deck, Coach!

Hope you are all enjoying the summer months and making the most of our beautiful surroundings. I know many of you enjoyed the wonderful 'Scene on the Green' festival which showcased the amazing variety of talent and expertise in Kenmare not to mention the dedication of its organisers and volunteers. Many thanks to those of you who have been in touch regarding the last couple of articles. All your suggestions, ideas and comments are valued and noted. Ireland's newest and most exciting art space Kenmare's Butter Market is delighted to present a solo art exhibition by Irish artist ‘PIGSY' entitled Catharsis Of Collapse Opening on Thursday September 2nd 2021 and curated by Claire Bunbury, Creative Director, this exhibition announces the artist's return to his native shores. Catharsis Of Collapse is a body of work produced by ‘PIGSY' whilst in residence in Malaga, Spain. He explores the perils, yet the ultimate relief of delving deep into one's own psyche as a necessity to creating these hugely personal artworks. The inward looking push, to the point of ‘collapse' is the artist's starting point, a place that leads to a deluge of creativity and the eponymous catharsis. 'PIGSY' aka Ciarán McCoy, a former architect, founding partner and Senior Project Designer in one of Dublin city's leading architectural firms, said, "I borrow from my architectural knowledge and other life experiences to create my diverse expressionist art works and punk poetry. I paint in a neo-expressionist style. My work is figurative and hyper gestural with a grafitti-esque vibe to it. Most of my works are painted in vibrant and vivid colours - even more so since working in Spain!" ‘PIGSY' has previously exhibited in The KEMP Gallery in Dublin, La Casa Amarilla in Malaga, London's The Other Art Fair and has had his work shown worldwide from USA to Singapore. Catharsis Of Collapse runs until Saturday 2nd October 2021 at Kenmare Butter Market. Don’t miss it!

Kenmare Community Games has announced their team of 38 strong Athletes who took part in the County Finals in Castleisland last weekend Saturday August 21st and Sunday August 22nd. This event, for anyone who has not been at it before, is like the Olympics of Kerry and is always a great day out that never fails to produce some great sport. Kenmare Community Games area includes children from Kilgarvan, Tousist, Templenoe, Bonane, Blackwater and Kenmare and it is great to see this year that children from all the areas in Kenmare Community Games area made it through to the County Finals. In a departure from previous years only one athlete from Kenmare Community Games can compete in one event at the finals and these children were selected based on their performance at the very successful local sports day run in July. Sean Daly President of Kenmare Community Games said, “Kenmare Community Games has a great tradition in Community Games Athletics winning the best overall club at the Kerry sports day in the past and even capturing the Best Overall Community Games Club area in Ireland a few years ago.” The gold medal winners at the county finals will go forward to make up the Kerry team that will represent the county at the national finals.

A tough day for the Daly family with three generations on the substitutes bench as Sean Daly 78, John Daly 50 and Ruairí Daly 12 watch the U14 Community Games Tag Rugby competition in Kenmare.

Father Tom Crean with the Amelanchier Ballerina planted in the grounds of Holy Cross Church, Kenmare, to mark his retirement after seventeen years as Parish Priest. pics Mary O’Leary

On August 4th, 2021, Fr Tom Crean retired as Parish Priest of Kenmare, having served this faith community for seventeen years. On his final Sunday, farewell Masses were celebrated in the three churches of the parish, Kenmare, Templenoe, and Direendarragh. At Holy Cross Church, a tree-planting ceremony marked the occasion. In accordance with Government and HSE directives, Covid-19 guidelines were adhered to and followed. Altar Servers formed a guard of honour and, to the backdrop of music and the poignant words of 'As I leave behind Neidín', the church bells rang out bidding Fr. Tom farewell.

He facilitated the publication of 'Holy Cross Church Kenmare 150 a social and local history', the pilgrim walks, a pageant, a parish mission, a time capsule, a parish social, and a celebratory jubilee Mass to commemorate the occasion. We are eternally grateful for the sensitive refurbishment of Holy Cross Church which was carried out under his guidance in preparation for the 2014 celebrations. In April 2018, when a fire in the church caused extensive damage, Fr. Tom put his shoulder to the wheel once again and restored Holy Cross to all its glory. On June 20th 2021, he celebrated the golden jubilee of his ordination to the priesthood. The occasion was marked with special Masses in Direendarragh, Templenoe, and Kenmare. His brother, His Grace William Crean, Bishop of Cloyne, concelebrated with him at 12 noon Mass in Holy Cross Church. And now we say farewell! We thank you, Fr. Tom, for all you have done, for honouring our history, strengthening our faith, and preparing our future. We wish you good health and an abundance of blessings in your retirement. Go raibh fada buan thú! Ó Phobal Dé an Neidín. We extend a warm welcome to Fr. George Hayes our new Parish Priest.

Through his priestly ministry in this parish, Fr. Tom touched many lives, and each has their own personal story. He officiated at baptisms, marriages, and burials of our family members, friends, and neighbours. He made Communion calls to the housebound, administered the Sacrament of the Dying to the sick and his visits to the Kenmare Nursing Unit and Nursing Homes were much appreciated. He administered the Sacraments of Reconciliation, First Communion, and Confirmation to our children. His ministry was one of service, kindness, care, and compassion. Fr. Tom’s administrational and organisational skills were second to none, and his work ethic was exemplary. He oversaw the building of the new co-educational Primary School, St John’s, in 2012, which is an amalgamation of St Clare’s and St Francis’ schools. Fr. Tom presided over two major milestones in our parish: in 2011, the 150th Anniversary of the Poor Clare Sisters in Kenmare and their service to the poor and to education and, in 2014, the 150th Anniversary of the Consecration of Holy Cross Church. His commitment to marking the latter was monumental.

Update on passports August 2021 The processing times for valid online applications are as follows. 10 working days for simple adult renewals; 15 working days for complex renewals, including children, and 40 working days for all First Time Applications.

MICHAEL HEALY-RAE TD An Taisce move will hurt rural communities and farmers I have condemned a move by An Taisce to seek leave to appeal the Glanbia cheese plant planning decision to the Supreme Court, stating it is a move that is “will hurt Ireland’s international reputation as a location for much sought after Foreign Direct Investment and with it have a paralysing effect on rural communities and farmers”

First time applications for adults and children are extremely complex to process, to ensure the identity of the applicant, their entitlement to Irish citizenship and, in the case of children, that all guardians have consented to the issuing of the passport. First time applications can also take longer when the correct supporting documents are not submitted with the application. Particular complexity relates to the process of application from children born in Ireland after 2004 due to the need to verify entitlement for Irish citizenship. Kilgarvan Community Council would like to thank Kerry Counties Council for Rebuilding and Reconnecting Connecting Grant of €3500 for Equipment that will benefit all clubs involved Community Center.

T: 01 618 3363 - 064 66 85782 or E: michael.healyrae@oireachtas.ie

I have made calls in the wake of confirmation that despite the High Court upholding An Bord Pleanála’s grant of planning permission to Glanbia Ireland for a cheese processing facility in Kilkenny in partnership with international dairy firm Royal A-ware that An Taisce have applied to the Supreme Court for leave to appeal the decision. “It is bad enough that faceless people can in the name of the environment prevent people at a whim of building a house on their own land to now see them bold enough to prevent the creation of much needed employment in the Agri food sector. An Taisce have already held up this project for more than two years and now have the cheek to spit in the face of 4,500 farm families supplying milk to Glanbia Ireland “I would make the call to An Taisce to drop this nonsensical appeal and think about the farmers, rural communities and workers involved but unfortunately if my experience has taught me anything when dealing with An Taisce over a long many year, it is not to expect them ever to put people before their crusading.”

Kenmare Tidy Towns volunteers have just entered the 2021 Tidy Towns Competition and we wish them the very best of luck. They have created a wonderful video which you can view on their facebook page also launched their new website www.kenmaretidytowns.ie Take a look and feel proud of what they have achieved over the years, they have certainly not been idle and have the medals and the tidy town to show for it! They ask us to remember we are all in this together as a TEAM 'Together Everybody Achieves More’ and they sent a big thank you to the volunteers and sponsors who have shown great resilience and determination, over the past year, in the face of adversity. Failte Father Hayes! I would like to send a very big welcome to Fr George Hayes to our Parish. I hope he will be very happy in our beautiful town.

Bantry Hospital I would like to put my support behind Bantry Hospital in its bid to keep its Consultants. I attended a meeting last Sunday, I was disappointed I was not able to speak and address our concerns for this area if it’s without this vital service. I think the powers that be that are behind these decisions have no idea of the distance people in rural Ireland have to travel to hospital appointments.

Scene on The Green I would like to congratulate the organisers of Scene on the Green. It has been a massive success and was lovely to see live music and drama and so much more in the Park in Kemare. I’ll be looking forward to it next year.

Council Motions I raised the following motions at the area meeting: Delighted to see that major safety measures will be carried out at Clady Cross this year. I have requested that public toilets be built at Kenmare Pier, this is a very busy area which need these amenities. I asked for a footpath to be put from Pairc Na Glaoine to Brights Sparks Montessori in Kenmare. There is a lot of footfall in this area and would be badly needed for safety. I have asked to ensure that all hedge cutting is done on our roads and junctions.

MARKET HOUSE, THE SQUARE, KENMARE, CO KERRY

Gardening in August… …the Willowfield Way The long hot dry spell is now a distant memory but will always be remembered in future summers no doubt. It was dry and it was hot, the summer bedding plants performed very well as long as they were frequently watered but the lawns certainly did suffer for several weeks as they gradually turned shades of yellow and brown as the grass began to shrivel up. But with the recent rains, growth has been restored and all is green again. 1. Grass growth has been very uneven this year due to the dry weather but the weeds still managed to keep going as the grass began to shrivel. Now the rains have come, mowing can resume to tidy up any uneven growth and remove the dried up moss. An Autumn fertilizer can be spread from now on to encourage a quicker response to growth after the dry spell and get the lawn in good shape heading into winter. 2. Flowers in the hanging baskets and window boxes have suffered from the hot conditions and several gaps may have appeared in your patio containers where plants have died. You can fill in these gaps now with autumn heathers and Pansy to regain some colour in your arrangements.

Keep a close eye on watering your containers; just because the summer has cooled down a bit and we have had some rain it is never heavy enough to water containers… they will still need regular watering right into September. Apply fertilizer in a liquid feed when you can to act as a pick-me-up for the plants that are feeling sad and off colour. This will help them flower away well into the autumn. 3. Replanting patio containers for the autumn can start from now on, especially if the summer plants are too straggly to recover. Large containers can be replanted by a mixture of shrubs or just a large sized ‘Garden Mum’ ( Chrysanthenum) will do the job on its own and will stay in flower until first frosts. Large Bizzy Lizzy can also be used as an instant fix to provide colour for the rest of the summer season. Autumn heathers are now available that will provide colour into early winter. Pansy and Viola will also be available soon that can be used for adding colour to existing containers or for new arrangements. From next month it will be time to start planting up a range of spring flowering bulbs that you can plant at the same time as planting up autumn/winter containers. 4. Shrubs in the garden have been enjoying the sunshine this summer and have grown happily ! If any have grown too much, now is a good time to carry out a trim as they still have time to shoot again and make a small amount of growth before the year is out. Don’t prune any of the spring flowering shrubs as they will lose their flower buds that have developed on the branches during the summer. Evergreen hedges like Laurel and Griselinia should also be trimmed by the end of the month . Again, this year, one of the most popular flowering shrubs for this time

of the year are the Hydrangea. As well as the regular 'Mop Heads' and 'Lace Caps', the Paniculata type are just coming into full flower and will keep on putting on a display until late autumn. Varieties like, ‘Limelight’, ‘Pinky Winky’, ‘Phantom’ and ‘Candlelight’ are easy to grow and are striking when in full flower. 5. Summer heathers are beginning to put on a god show at the moment and will stay in flower right into October. As well as planting in the ground , they can also be used in window boxes or any type of patio container. The only limiting factors about these summer heathers is that they are varieties of Calluna which can only be grown in acid ( peaty ) soil, so for a container you can use a special type of compost called Ericaceous Compost in which they can be planted. In tubs and window boxes they can be planted with a dwarf conifer and trailing ivy to make an attractive arrangement. 6. Trim back straggly growth and old flower heads of alpine plants to encourage strong short growth for next spring’s flowers to ‘spring’ from. 7. In the vege garden keep on top of harvesting crops which have reached maturity and remove plant debris from the growing beds to prevent safe houses for bugs and slugs. Tidy up runners of strawberries so they don’t end up growing everywhere. 8. TIME OUT ! …. sit back and enjoy the last few weeks of summer if the sun ever comes out again ! or drop into Willowfield to see what new plants we have had coming in recently,, and there is always a few surprises ! See you there !

Could anyone stoop any lower? These two small pups were pulled out of the river by an quick thinking lady and her son. They would be dead if it was not for them being in the right place at the right time. To the person who did this, this is cruelty at its worst. How do you sleep at night? Ironically, if you had got the mother neutered they would never have had to endure what you did to them. Do you think that had she had the operation it would affect her ability as a working sheep dog? This is not the case, as a dogs temperament, its training and personality, and the ability to ‘work’ are a result of genetics and upbringing, and not based on its hormones. If you cannot train your sheep dog, get an expert in. The sheepdog is one of the most intelligent breed of dog, and they can run rings round us humans. These pups were innocent victims born in the wrong place at the wrong time and the worrying thought is, were there others? Any rescue would have taken those pups, but luckily they are in the safe hands of Kenmare Locality Animal Welfare Society (KLAWS) and have had a vet check, a drink of puppy formula milk and are now tucked up in bed. They will need feeding every four hours, but with tender, loving care they will survive and KLAWS are up to the task! As soon as they are old enough, KLAWS will be finding them loving homes; homes where they will not be in fear for their lives.

Advance notice from Kerry County Council of the intention to temporarily close the N71 National Secondary Road (Kenmare to Glengarriff Road) between Molly Gallivan's Visitor Centre and the Kerry/Cork County Bounds (N71 Caha Tunnel) from 5th October to 14th December 2021.

Kenmare Locality Animal Welfare Society 087 970 4480

There is a famous song that starts with the line ‘If you go down to the woods today, you're sure of a big surprise, ‘ and anyone walking the woodlands outside Glencar on Wednesday August 4th would certainly have had one. Kenmare Locality Animal Welfare Society received a call that day to advise them that three small kittens had been spotted in woodland in that remote area, literally in the middle of nowhere. If the kittens had not been spotted, who knows what their fate may have been as there were no houses nearby. We think sadly that they must have been dumped deliberately as the place was so inhospitable and uninhabitable, and as they were so young at only about twelve weeks old, how would they have fended for themselves? Colin Walsh and William McEvoy, from County Kerry and back for a visit, saw the kittens and made every effort to help and eventually the call came into KLAWS and our volunteers sprung into action. Luckily Kathrin and Rouven, great KLAWS supporters, live close to the location and, with the help of a humane cat trap and some smelly sardines, set out to help. Unfortunately the kittens had disappeared again and gone back into hiding but by playing cat noises they managed to get the kittens out of hiding and with time and dedication succeeded in trapping the kittens. Within hours of being caught be assured, those abandoned kittens were receiving full medical attention at All Creatures Vet Centre in Kenmare. If anyone cannot look after kittens all it takes is one phone call and any rescue will respond, no questions and certainly no criticism as every circumstance can be different. But ultimately get your 'moms and toms' neutered and spayed, the procedure costs hardly anything. Please don't dump, do the right thing. Luckily this story has a happy ending and the three kittens found their forever home with Kathrin and Rouven, joining Mickey their KLAWS rescue dog and several other pampered pets, however it could have ended very differently.

Golf in Kenmare Golf News Kenmare GC Update Welcome to this month’s Kenmare Golf update. We’re glad to report that our building project continues at pace and as planned. The building is starting to take shape now, we’re nearly there! Coming up at Kenmare Golf Club: Two major events this September are the Scratch Cups, and of Course the 3 Brothers Competition. The Scratch Cups are a fixture of every gold club, with four categories of competition to suit each handicap bracket. The scratch cup is normally played as a Strokeplay competition, and is a real purist’s competition. This year we’ve made a big push to advertise the Kenmare GC scratch cups and we have to say the booking response has been great, with big visitor numbers. These take place on the Weekend of September 4th and 5th and are kindly sponsored by Ger Wallace Catering equipment.

We are also delighted to announce that the Kenmare GC Brothers Competition will go ahead this year, for the 43rd running of the event. This will be a community affair this year. Kenmare GAA have come to the Golf Club’s aid through allowing the use of their facilities as a club base and parking location, as the temporary facilities at the club would not be enough to handle 180 brothers. There will not be a big social aspect to this year’s competition – the brothers will be encouraged to enjoy what the town has to offer. The response from the competitors shows what they think of the competition – all teams that booked are coming. Results: Some of the results from recent competitions are below. There are normally 9 or 10 prize winners every week, and not enough pages space to include them all. For all our results go to the Kenmare Golf Club Facebook page. On Thursday 8th July 2021, Fenton Curley, treasurer, and ex-Chairman of Kenmare Cycling Club embarked on the TransAtlanticWay (TAW) Bike Race—an incredible adventure cycling challenge circumnavigating Ireland. This was an extremely tough, unsupported ride of 2422.5 kilometres along the wild Atlantic Way, and Fenton had been training hard, working with a cycling coach who was monitoring, training, and setting weekly schedules for strength and endurance much needed for this challenge. During these preparations Fenton covered 12,000 kilometres and 120,000 metres of climbing and spent at least an hour a day on strength and core work. He also combined training with a new diet losing 5 kilos in weight which would have a significant advantage on the climbing aspect of the race. Fenton at the start of the race was going exceptionally well with a steady 210km and 3,000m of climbing. Easing into it and looking forward to the coming days with his rouleur Anniemiek Stegehuis who was excited to be riding with Fenton on this TAW 2021 Bike Ride from Derry to Cork City. The pair had everyone at Kenmare Cycling Club, friends and colleagues at FC Group all cheering them on from start to the finish! There were two courses for the race a long or short course and Fenton decided to take on the long course as this was more scenic and went to some of the best places. The objective was just to finish the race but of course you go as fast as you can.

Fenton's plan was to take it steady for the first couple of days then start pushing from there. The key was food and hydration so there was a strict plan for intake covering 6,000 calories per day together with recovery after each day combined with proper rest every night in a B&B where at least 5 hours sleep is required to be able to recover. Fenton felt strong throughout the race and got stronger as it progressed. After day three his body adjusted to the extreme activity and compensated accordingly. On the third day Fenton had a 300k push out of Donegal onto Ballina and had already covered nearly 800k and 10,000m of climbing. These were some of the most difficult sections of the race, so Fenton was pleased all was going to plan at this stage. By the sixth day Fenton had a 310k push from Cashel to Lahinch, having covered over 1500K and 17,000m of climbing. They took the Ferry the next day to Tarbert and entered the Kingdom of Kerry! This was going to be a big psychological moment for Fenton getting there in good shape as was entering his home training ground where he lives in Kenmare and knows every part of the route of the 800k run in to the finish in Cork. After 260k covered and 1730k in total Fenton and his teammate Annemiek arrived in Dingle the evening of day seven. They were passing through Kenmare and all the local towns where there were tremendous support and encouragement from Fenton’s local cycling friends and family.

Fenton pushed through to complete another tough 230km on day eight and arrived in the Schull area, the next day seeing him reach his destination in Cork City. He completed day nine of the TAW race having covered 2300k and 27,000m of climbing. The final day of the race saw him hit Mizen Head early, the most southerly point in Ireland, having covered the most northerly point at Malin on the first day with just over 200k to finish in Cork!

On day ten and the final day of the race Fenton completed his 2422km cycle from Derry to Cork along the Atlantic coast. A tough route and a fantastic achievement! As Fenton told us, “It was a huge relief and with much emotion to have completed the TAW Race around Ireland. And I would like to thank all my cycling buddies in Ireland, Ghana and Cyprus for their support for this tremendous cycling journey.” Fenton also extended a big thank you to everyone, including those who kept him in good shape and away from injury. It is all much appreciated, especially all the private messages received throughout this adventure.
