Welcome to Autumn 2023!

Jersey Arts Centre continues to celebrate its 40th year with a season designed to appeal to all tastes: we hope that there will again be many performances, exhibitions and courses throughout the autumn that you will be inspired to attend.

We will be hosting 15 of the Jersey Festival of Words events over the weekend of 23 + 24 September and both the Jersey Amateur Dramatics Club (JADC) and Jersey Green Room Theatre Company present shows in September (see pages 10 + 11). Jersey Film Society presents six films throughout the season with a further four screenings from our Monday Matinée series. And there’s the Human Rights Film Festival, too, between 18-21 October (see page 26). There are also four Amici Artium concerts to add to the three from earlier in the year with violin, piano, trumpet and quartet offerings.

Philip Stokes and Company return with a show from Edinburgh, Lash, and a newly developed piece, Joe & Jack, which started life here at Jersey Arts Centre back in April – see pages 28 + 29 for the full details! And Forced Entertainment return on 15 + 16 November (see page 33) with If All Else Fails… 2023 concludes with a nostalgic, but contemporary, experience for all the family as we bring Jersey Arts Centre alive with The Sound of Music by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II between 8-22 December (see pages 36 + 37).

Once again, we would like to thank you all for your unparalleled support and encouragement throughout these past 40+ years –the challenges have sometimes been great – but your commitment to the work at Jersey Arts Centre has been even greater! We look forward to seeing you here at Phillips Street for all our favourite things!

Take good care, stay safe and enjoy the experience ahead!

With best wishes

Hypnotist - Andrew Newton

SATURDAY 2 SEPTEMBER

“The old hypno-tricks are gone, replaced by new, more inventive and intelligent material. Andrew Newton’s talent lies in his ability to magic up the absurdly funny from the minds of ordinary people and his professionalism and experience shine through. The audience laughs hysterically while he tiptoes along a very narrow line... the sketch where volunteers shared their experiences of being kidnapped by aliens had us all laughing hysterically... There was more... much more... and last night’s audience rewarded him with non-stop laughter from beginning to end.” - Sydney Morning Herald Suitable for 14 years + Under 18s will not be selected for hypnosis

Luke Wright’s Silver Jubilee

Supported by Norwich Arts Centre + Arts Council, England

THURSDAY 5 OCTOBER

8PM (NATIONAL POETRY DAY)

Crack out the bunting! It’s Luke Wright’s Silver Jubilee.

Over 25 years, Luke Wright has built up a reputation for being one of Britain’s most popular live poets. He has won an unprecedented four Saboteur Awards (national awards for spoken word), a Stage Award, and a Fringe First. He’s sold out shows across the world and regularly tours with John Cooper Clarke and The Libertines.

This year, thwarted in his attempts to hold a street party by the philistines on the council and unable to shift the over-ordered commemorative plates, Wright does what a poet does best, and takes a deep dive into himself. What follows is his most confessional show to date. Wright was adopted as a baby and grew up believing that his adoption “wasn’t a big thing.” But one night he idly stumbled across his birth mother on Facebook. This window to a world that might have been his has thrown up deep questions about privilege, familial love, and destiny.

This show is an excavation of lives lived and not lived. Wright navigates his audience through a warm and honest hour of poems and stand-up with the directness and pathos that has made him one of the most popular live poets in England. With some wild experiments in form, a nervous kitten called Sir John Betjeman and a healthy smattering of drum n bass, Wright manages to navigate some heart-wrenching material and keep the laughs coming.

Kaye Nicholson

SATURDAY 7 OCTOBER

8PM / SUITABLE FOR 14 YEARS +

What is an Island-dwelling, geeky teen girl growing up in the late nineties to do about her sapphic stirrings, at a time before smartphones and broadband, apps and social media? How does she find connection? Who can she look to to feel seen? Where can she be safe? In this emotive piece, expanded from the 2023 CI Pride event, Kaye explores the works of sapphic literature which made their mark and shaped her identity as a queer woman growing up in the Island; the themes shared between those pieces, and how sapphic voices have echoed through the centuries to inspire, connect with, and embolden queer women to be who they are.

Excerpts from the ever-expanding Ballet d’Jèrri repertoire. The dancers will present their favourite pieces of choreography from the company’s body of works, plus a few additions.

Act 2: Carte Blanche

A brand new ballet created collaboratively by our team of dancers. Carte Blanche is a tonguein-cheek salute to the ups and downs of life as a dancer - at least one in the unique position of starting a new company.

This programme flips the perspective of programming, allowing the dancers a Carte Blanche to speak for themselves in the language they understand best.

ArtsCentreTheatre (ACT)

WEDNESDAY 8 NOVEMBER -

SATURDAY 11 NOVEMBER

7.30PM

One stage has two chairs and a square table upon it, the second has a double bed and the third has no furniture at all. These pieces are so new that, as we go to press, they are still in the process of being written, but it is already clear that there will be comedy, there will be tragedy and there will be everything in between.

Some of these pieces will also be performed later in the month in the Jersey Eisteddfod continuing ACT’s decade-long participation in Jersey’s annual festival of the arts.

This production will include adult subject matter and strong language. Jersey Arts Centre will update its website with specific trigger warnings when the final selection of scripts has been made.

If All Else Fails

Forced Entertainment

Co-produced by Cambridge Junction and Sheffield Theatres

WEDNESDAY 15 NOVEMBER + THURSDAY 16 NOVEMBER

8PM

Two performers engage in an absurd test that seems to shift and change as they work their way through it. Fragments of a language lesson. Questions from a personality quiz. Slogans from some future society. The performers laugh, hesitate, ask for more time. The test continues. As the clock ticks it’s not even certain if the subjects of the test are the audience or the performers.

If All Else Fails is a new collaboration with dancer, maker and choreographer

Seke Chimutengwende. Performed with Chimutengwende and Cathy Naden, a founder member of Forced Entertainment, the piece is a dialogue of speech and movement, questions and answers. If All Else Fails brings together two powerful forces in the contemporary theatre scene to create a perplexing and original exploration of new territory.
