Welcome to Spring 2024!

Welcome to our spring 2024 season and my 67th!

Jersey Arts Centre turns 41 on 20 January 2024 but we have been active across the Island for over 50 years because we started out as the Jersey Arts Council in 1970! As always, our programme is designed to appeal to all tastes and so we hope that there will be many performances, exhibitions and courses throughout the spring that you will be inspired to attend.

Oddsocks Productions return with a new Roger Radio initiative as they … attempt Frankenstein – on the radio! Jersey Film Society presents a Hitchcock Weekend of eight films on 24 + 25 February. There are also a further four Amici Artium concerts with violin, trumpet, percussion and quartet offerings.

Vamos Theatre return with The Boy on the Roof on 20 + 21 February, and our Honorary Patron, Tim Crouch, returns on 28 February with the critically acclaimed An Oak Tree. And Ballet d’Jerri will be celebrating their 1st Anniversary in the form of a residency at Jersey Arts Centre with performances between 22-24 March.

We would once again like to thank you all for your unparalleled support and encouragement throughout these past 40+ years –the challenges have sometimes been great – but your commitment to the work at Jersey Arts Centre has been even greater!

We look forward to seeing you here at Phillips Street and out-and-about during the spring. Take good care, stay safe and enjoy the experience ahead!

With best wishes

Coming Together

A Celebration of Students’ recent Art + Textile work from JCG

MONDAY 8 JANUARY - SATURDAY 3 FEBRUARY

This exhibition features a selection of vibrant and varied artwork by recent GCSE and A-Level students studying Art and Textiles at Jersey College for Girls. The two departments work closely together, with students sharing ideas and best practice to the benefit of both disciplines. Professional artists and practitioners are often invited in to our studios to pass on their skills and knowledge. Our teaching philosophy is that all our students should have access to as wide a range of creative experiences as possible on their expressive journeys.

The Car in Art

Mark

MONDAY 5 FEBRUARY - SATURDAY 2 MARCH

Anything to do with automobiles - the good, the bad and the very strange - is Mark’s inspiration.

Mark originally started drawing cars as cartoons in profile. These evolved with ever-growing backgrounds and different styles, crossing genres, culture, TV and film. Mark works on paper, card and CS10 using pens, pencils, felt pens, and paint pens.

In total, Mark has created approximately 170 pieces, taking around five years to complete the collection.

playful

A time-constained Exhibition

MONDAY 11 MARCH - SATURDAY 6 APRIL

PREVIEW: MONDAY 11 MARCH 5.30PM – 7PM

A celebration of childhood and play - thereby launching Jersey’s first Children’s Festival for July 2024!

With only 40 hours, over four days, to create their pieces, local artists have once again been given the challenge of producing their work straight onto the Berni Gallery walls, using the above as a stimulus. Each artist will have just 40 hours, in situ, to create and complete the work.

This exhibition follows in the footsteps of the previously successful 5x4 in 2006, Self Portrait in 2011, Conflict in 2014, Sporting Bodies in 2016, woman / man in 2016, Art 35 for Jersey Arts Centre’s 35th anniversary celebrations in 2018, the dance in 2018, liberation 75 in 2020, Jersey and the Crown in 2022 and Spring Forward in 2023.

After the exhibition has finished on Saturday 6 April, the gallery walls will be repainted, covering up the work forever. Don’t miss your chance to experience this unique exhibition –it won’t be there for long!

Melange de Misfits

The Art + Design tutors of Highlands College

MONDAY

15 APRIL - SATURDAY 4 MAY

This exhibition is a showcase of the talented art and design tutors of Highlands College.

The art department has a long history of providing an expansive creative experience for its students.

This exhibition goes some way to demonstrating the variety of work created by staff, including print, ceramics and illustration and also the materials and techniques that are then shared with students.

Priding themselves on maintaining a dual professionalism, the staff of the art department at Highlands College are committed to educating their students in all aspects of creative practice.

Indigo Moon - Learning to Dance

SATURDAY 27 JANUARY

8PM

Spero is on a journey to the moon, a young person ruminates and Wayne learns to dance. After the success of his debut solo show Chrome Yellow, Wayne returns with a new introspective play born out of his own aversion to dance.

For weeks Wayne worked intensely (bruises, sweat and tears) to learn how to dance in a last-ditched attempt to connect with the art form and uncover the root of his paralysing antipathy.

The journey results in so much more than dance: it is a touching meditation on the importance of storytelling, movement and what it means to be creative.

Wayne would like to thank Victoria Hermitage for her choreography and inspiration during the development of the play.

England & Son

Tin Cat Entertainment

Directed by Cressida Brown

TUESDAY 30 JANUARY

7.30PM

“A nation that devours another will one day devour itself”.

Set when The Great Devouring comes home, England & Son is a one-man play written specifically for the award-winning political comedian Mark Thomas by award-winning playwright Ed Edwards (The Political History of Smack and Crack, Paines Plough’s Roundabout, Soho and UK tour).

This is the first play Mark has ever performed in that he has not written himself.

With some deep, dark laughs - and some deep, dark love - along the way, England & Son emerges from characters Mark knew in his childhood and Ed’s lived experience in jail. Prepare for Mark to take you on a kaleidoscopic odyssey where disaster capitalism, empire, stolen youth and stolen wealth merge into the simple tale of a working-class boy who just wants his dad to smile at him.

An Oak Tree

WEDNESDAY 28 FEBRUARY

7.30PM

A man loses his daughter to a car. Nothing now is what it is. It’s like he’s in a play – but he doesn’t know the words or the moves. The man who was driving the car is a stage hypnotist. Since the accident, he’s lost the power of suggestion. For him, everything now is exactly what it is. For the first time since the accident, these two men meet. They meet when the Father volunteers for the Hypnotist’s act. And this time, he really doesn’t know the words or the moves…

Jersey Arts Centre’s Honorary Patron, acclaimed actor and writer Tim Crouch, returns with the world-wide success, An Oak Tree. The piece is a two-hander, with the Hypnotist being played by Tim. The Father, however, is played by a different guest actor at each performance. They walk on stage having neither seen nor read a word of the play they’re in… until they’re in it.

An Oak Tree was critically acclaimed during its first run at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and the Traverse Theatre in 2005. It has been performed all over the world, and has featured performances from over 250 actors including:

Christopher Eccleston, Frances McDormand, Roger Lloyd Pack, Mike Myers, and Toby Jones.

NASSIM

A Bush Theatre and Nassim Soleimanpour production

THURSDAY 7 MARCH

8PM

Dear Performer.

I want to show you something. Did you know, in Farsi my name is written like this: ‘.RUOPNAMIELOS MISSAN si eman yM’

From Iranian playwright Nassim Soleimanpour comes an audacious new theatrical experiment. Each night a different performer joins the playwright on stage, while the script waits unseen in a sealed box…

Touchingly autobiographical yet powerfully universal, NASSIM is a striking theatrical demonstration of how language can both divide and unite us.

NASSIM follows Soleimanpour’s globally acclaimed White Rabbit Red Rabbit, which has been translated into over 25 different languages and performed over 1,000 times by names including: Stephen Fry, Ken Loach and Whoopi Goldberg.

Six Heroines

FRIDAY 8 MARCH + SATURDAY 9 MARCH

8PM

Two thousand years ago, the Roman poet Ovid gave voice to a group of inspirational women –queens, sorcerers, pioneers, poets and politicians – in a series of fictional letters called The Heroines. They were the women left in the wake of those swaggering heroes of classical mythology: Theseus, Hercules, Ulysses, Jason, Achilles…

Drawing inspiration from Ovid, fifteen female and non-binary playwrights were commissioned by Jermyn Street Theatre, London in 2020 to dramatise the lives of these fifteen heroines, in a series of new monologues for the twenty-first century.

Now, performed to mark International Women’s Day 2024, six local actors will bring six of these extraordinary monologues to life in an evening that celebrates these powerful women of myth.

The six monologues are:

Briseis: Perfect Myth Allegory by Abi Zakarian

Penelope: Watching the Grass Grow by

Dido: The Choice by Stella Duffy

Canace: A Good Story by Isley Lynn

Ariadne: String by

Phaedra: Pity the Monster by Timberlake Wertenbaker
