Salam Indo ..... Go!

2014 Indonesian Cultural Night and Gala Dinner in Atlanta, Georgia

On the beautiful Sunday evening of October 19, 2014, more than 400 Indonesians in Atlanta, Georgia, many dressed in traditional Indonesian costumes and batik, gathered to attend the Indonesian Cultural Night and Gala Dinner. This event was presented by ICHF (Indonesian Commu-

Teguh Yulianto (2nd from left), the head coordinator of the event, who also serves as the Vice President of ICHF and Wei Siong Tan (2nd from right), the President of IDN-GA

nity Heritage Foundation) and IDN-GA (Indonesian Diaspora Network - Georgia), and sponsored by the local Indonesian establishments. The purpose of the event was to foster solidarity among the Indonesian Diaspora in Georgia, to pay respect to the 65 years and older senior Indonesians, and to celebrate the inauguration of the new President of Indonesia.

November 2014

The 2014 Indonesian Cultural Night and Gala Dinner was the first event jointly organized by ICHF and IDN-GA. The event received enthusiastic response from the Indonesian community in Atlanta. Tickets were sold out within 72 hours, reaching the seating capacity of 400+ people. Atlanta is the state capitol of Georgia with a population of over 5 million people. It is estimated over 5000 Indonesians live in the greater metropolitan Atlanta area. The Indonesian Community Heritage Foundation (ICHF) was established in 1998 to serve the Indonesian community in Georgia and to promote Indonesia to the general population at large in Georgia. ICHF is supported by many Indonesian organizations in Georgia such as Permias, IKMIA (Ikatan Keluarga Muslim Indonesia Atlanta), Indonesian churches, Sanggar Lestari Dance Group and the Indonesian American Chambers of Commerce (IACC). The motto of ICHF is “Together We

Make A Difference”. The mission of ICHF is to promote good citizenship, preserve Indonesian culture and traditions, and to maintain solidarity and harmony among various Indonesian ethnic groups. The Indonesian Diaspora Network – Georgia Chapter (IDN-GA) was established in 2013 to advocate the Indonesian diaspora living in Georgia to play an active role in the development of Indonesia, to be good ambassadors for fostering closer ties between Indonesia and the United States, and to foster the spirit of Indonesian diaspora. This spirit of togetherness and cooperation was clearly reflected during the Cultural Night and Gala Dinner. According to the event committee, they started to plan the event just a month ago. Over 75 volunteers were mobilized in the preparation and execution of the event, from the

ticket registration desk to the decorations of the venue. The event was run under a very tight budget. Therefore, most of the work was performed by the volunteers. It was amazing to observe how working together in one spirit, this small group of people could pull out such a grand event with a limited budget. The program was carefully planned. Attendees were greeted at the registration desk to get table assignments and name tags. They were then directed to a red carpet stage to take pictures. Ushers in beautiful kebaya dress and

batik guided guests to their tables. Guests were seated at a table decorated with fresh beautiful centerpiece bouquet and a piece of Indonesian batik cloth surrounded the centerpiece. The stage was decorated with drapes of Indonesian cloths and shapes of wayang gunungan. It was designed, created and decorated by a talented Indonesian, Ms. Dian Kartikasari. Behind the guests, a 24 feet long food-serving table was elegantly decorated. A tall glass vase with a golden tree branches, decorated with white petals and crystal beads hanging freely stood tall as the centerpiece. Yards of batik fabric on the tabletop completed the setting. The decoration was inspired by the Balinese dancers. The decorator, Mr. Sam Gustin tried to bring the Indonesian culture to the next level with a contemporary twist. The multimedia team projected numerous pictures onto the two big screens, showing Indonesians living in Atlanta and their activities, and pictures from the audience just taken at the red carpet. The

3 members team also controlled the music, the sound system and the lighting. The opening scene presented a group of adorable children in colorful costumes singing the song “Tanah Airku on the stage. At once, the audience could sense it was an inclusive event, for both the young and the old. Bapak Teguh Yulianto, the head coordinator of the event, who also serves as the Vice President of ICHF gave the opening speech. Pak Teguh expressed his appreciation to the Indonesians in Atlanta for their support and enthusiastic participation.

“This is a reflection of their love for Indonesia”, he added. Pak Teguh also reminded the audience that we are one Indonesia, despite different colors, languages, education levels, economic status, religions, organizations or parties. We should honor and practice Bhinneka Tunggal Ika in our daily lives. Bapak Wei Siong Tan, the President of IDN-GA was the next speaker. The theme of his message was that we are in the era for new Indonesia where the greatest resource is the people, and we should embrace the “can do” attitude. Pak Wei Siong cited that the timing of tonight celebration was in coincidence with the inauguration of our new President in

Indonesia. He challenged the Indonesians in Atlanta to capture this new moment by taking active part in promoting Indonesia and becoming the ambassadors of light for the new Indonesia, bringing new hope and shining like the 17,480 lanterns released across the archipelago to celebrate our presidential inauguration. The program continued with performers in beautiful costumes who performed Indonesian dances: Tari Payung, Tari Merak and Tari Langcang Kuning. Next was fashion show from 24 ladies, gentlemen and children, who walked the stage in vibrant traditional Indonesian outfits from Aceh to Sumba. In this event, 20 senior Indonesians from age 65 to 85 years were presented with certificates of recognition for their contributions to families, communities and society. They were honored and cherished for a lifetime of experience they had shared with the Indonesian Community in Atlanta. The gala dinner showcased 24 kinds of Indonesian culinary from different provinces. A variety of appetizers (Siomay Bandung, Empek-empek and Lumpia), main food (Gulai Kale & Rendang, Sambal

Goreng Hati, Sate Lilit, Rumpu Rampe, Nasi Kuning Banjar, Kwetiew, Ayam Rica, Dadar jagung, Kering Ubi dan Soto Medan) and desserts (Wajik Pandan, Kue Cara, Kue Pepe, Tempe Mendoan, Kue Gogos, Bandrek Medan, Es Dawet Jawa, Bubur Sum-Sum, Bubur Sagu, Bubur Ketan Hitam) filled up the long serving table.

The lively music prompted the audience to stand up, waving the small Indonesian flags that had been provided for each table

Live music from the local Indonesian Vilvatka band was playing at the background. Ratu kebaya IDN-USA, Mrs. Hanna Raharjo boosted the audience’s spirit with the song Kebyar Kebyar by Cokelat (Indonesia merah darahku, putih tulangku…). The lively music prompted the audience to stand up, waving the small Indonesian flags that had been provided for each table. The program also included Best Dressed competition for Woman, Man and Kid. Three winners from the audience were selected and each was crowned with a “Best Dressed” red sash. The event featured Evi Yang, an Indonesian Diaspora singer from Atlanta, who was also one of the performers at the IDNUSA convention in NOLA (New Orleans) last August. Evi Yang recently launched her singing career after being absent for her 2 years old daughter Haylee. Evi opened his performance with a Melayu song, Cindai. She also sang her favorite song, “I will always love you”. One of the audience

commented that he got goose bumps and thought Whitney Houston was alive again. Another guest expressed, ”her voice is amazing; she has such a potential.” When Evi sang “Kopi Dangdut” and “Poco Poco”, majority of the audience was no longer at their seats. They were dancing following the tunes. The night was closed with the song “Dari Sabang sampai Merauke”. It was such a festive, fun an inspira-

tional night. Later someone posted on Facebook with the album titled “Definitely memory of a lifetime”. One young college student confessed that the event had triggered him to involve more in the community, and he was going to assemble his friends to discuss what they can do for Indonesia. The audience left feeling proud to be Indonesians, experiencing a renewed spirit of unity among the Indonesian diaspora in Atlanta, and having a sense of new hope and commitment for Indonesia. n

Jane Wibowo

Igniting Passion Within Ourselves When you just met Jane Wibowo, you will think that she was quite an ordinary person until you start to get her to talk about her passion. Born and raised in Indonesia, she came to United Stated as an international student. She pursued her studies in Business Management with minor in Marketing. She always thought that she will be back to Indonesia after she got her degrees and continue her parents’ business. After the time when she finished her practical training in the US, there were a few incidents that happened in Indonesia back in May 1998 that prompt her decision to stay for good in the United Stated. Jane has always been very involved with several organizations and clubs during her University days. She was a frequent MC and lead singer in Indonesian Consulate LA and her church, GKI Lake Ave. She demonstrated great passion doing her best with these organization. She was always thankful to her parents who continuously encouraged her to get involved in communities, church and organizations ever since she was at a young age. That trait of making a difference and service to people in the communities has always been embedded in her throughout her life. She is very persistence, and willing to get out of her comfort zone to improve her skills. Jane started her insurance and financial business right out of college and even with her limited language ability, she was able to excel and proved herself as someone who willing to work hard to reach her goal. Her current companies, First Way Insurance and Prosperity Wealth Management Group, received

12

several prestigious awards for her entrepreneurship skills, as well as high achievements in her profession and community involvement. Not only that, she often enjoys setting valuable time aside to help others and encourage volunteerism with her family, friends and co workers. Some of the major volunteer projects that she was in charge of last year included the following: •Provide scholarship programs to teen parents that are interested in continuing their education. •Fundraising and finding homes for the homeless through Valley Housing Partner. Help solicit household items to give to each family. •Delivering food to low income seniors at senior living facilities during the holidays with the Girls Scout Troop. •Shop and deliver turkey and bags of food to homeless families during Thanksgiving holidays thru Soroptimist Puente Hill. Even though she is involved in many organizations, she found her main passion

which is helping women and children in particular. She usually takes the lead in various programs that creates betterment for their lives.

When being asked how did she keep up and what motivate her, Jane told us that as a parent and an active community member, we need to be able to be an example by walking the talk. This is especially very important when you ask someone else to do the things that you want them to do (including her children). "We need to keep up and keep improving ourselves to do better. You can never stop learning. The journey that we take during our lives will mold our character and attitude. I never think that I know more than others, because I will not be able to learn with that kind of attitude. We can always learn even from children or people that is less fortunate than us." She encouraged the millennium generation youths to get involve in activities that interest them. "Search for things that you can excel at, if not, do your best in what you do, pour your heart in something that you believe and love to do." Her motto is "you can never fail until you stop trying." Jane is currently actively involved with the following organizations:

•Co-leader for her daughter’s Girl Scouts Troop, •Chairwomen for RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership), •Treasurer for Toastmaster at Azusa Pacific University, •Choir coordinator at her church, GII Hok Im Tong/ IEC Los Angeles •CFO and Executive Boards for Regional Chamber of Commerce San Gabriel Valley, •VP of membership at Indonesian American Business Council and •Recently was appointed to be the only "Asian Woman" to be on the board of Mt. San Antonio College Foundation. n

Wawancara

Tentang Wirausaha oleh Ir. Budi Rahardjo, MSc, PhD. (Dosen Teknik Elektro ITB & Technopreneur)

– he he he).

Komentar 3: I couldn’t agree more pak Budi.

Saya sudah punya itu pak dan has been struggling for more than 12 years but no success yet‌ Tapi saya masih semangat pak meski harus tetap jadi pegawai dulu sambil nurturing the business. n

Berkelana melalui Paduan

PART 1

MediCare 101

Choosing the Right Plan for You According to the U.S. Census Bureau, there are more than 77 million baby boomers in the U.S. And by 2030, this demographic (born between 1946 and 1964) will represent an estimated 20% of the population. Most of this baby boomer will eventually turn to Medicare as their primary health insurance when they turn 65, especially if they plan to retire and/ or will not have any more coverage from their current employer. However, a lot of this baby boomers (especially for new immigrant), still not clear on what is Medicare, when to obtain it, what will be covered and the different parts of Medicare. SO, WHAT IS MEDICARE? Medicare is the nation’s largest health insurance program. It provides high-quality health care to: People age 65 and older, people under age 65 with certain disabilities and all people with end-stage renal disease (ESRD). Medicare, which administered by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), has four parts: • A and B – managed by the federal government, referred to as Original Medicare. • C and D – offered by private health insurance companies with an approved Medicare contract, with all your Part A and B benefits. WHEN TO SIGN UP FOR MEDICARE? When you reach 65, you have a 7-month Initial Enrollment Period to sign up for Part A and/or Part B. The 7-month period begins 3 months before the month you turn 65, includes the month you turn 65, and ends 3 months after the month you turn 65. You usually don't pay a monthly premium for Medicare Part A (Hospital Insurance) coverage if you or your spouse paid Medicare taxes while working for at least 10 years. This is sometimes called

22

November 2014

"premium-free Part A". [If you buy Part A, you'll pay up to $426 each month (reduced to $407 in 2015)] Medicare Part B is not free. A monthly fee is usually deducted straight from your Social Security payment or retirement benefits. The fees range depending on your income. If you didn't sign up for Part A and/or Part B when you were first eligible, and

you aren’t eligible for a Special Enrollment Period, you can sign up during the General Enrollment Period between January 1–March 31 each year, and your coverage will start July 1. You may have to pay a higher premium for late enrollment in Part A and/or a higher premium for late enrollment in Part B. Once your Initial Enrollment Period ends, you may have the chance to sign up for Medicare during a Special Enrollment Period, IF : (1) You lose your employer insurance, (2) move to a new address that isn’t in your plan’s service area, or (3) become eligible for Medi-Cal coverage. You also have an 8-month Special Enrollment Period to sign up for Part A and/or Part B that starts the month after the employment ends or the group health plan insurance based on current employment ends, whichever happens first. Usually, you don't pay a late enrollment penalty if you sign up during a Special Enrollment Period. Please note that you can choose to delay your Part B benefit and avoid the penalty if you are still covered under your employer plan.

In the simplest terms Part A covers hospitalization and Part B covers doctors and patient care. Original Medicare covers approximately 80% of your health care. (not include prescription drugs.) This means that the Medicare recipient will pay the remaining 20% for their healthcare. Original Medicare allows for freedom in doctor and hospital choice and may go to any provider that accepts Medicare. PART D – PRESCRIPTION DRUG PLAN Medicare Part D is only offered by private insurers approved by the Center of Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). Part D plans, when sold as stand-alone plans, may be combined with Medicare Supplement Plan. Part D plans can help pay for brand name and generic prescribed drugs and provide access to retail drugstores as well as mail-order options. 3 BASIC OPTIONS THAT WORK WITH ORIGINAL MEDICARE 1.Supplements (Medigap) – Supplements for original Medicare. Supplement works with original Medicare (Part A and B) and does exactly what it says; it supplements Medicare by covering the 20% that Medicare does not. By purchasing a Medicare Supplement, you will continue to have the freedom that you have with Original Medicare. You can choose your doctors, you will not have to get referrals and you will not have many co-pays. Medicare Supplements are purchased in addition to the Part B premium that is coming out of your social security. They can start at about $103 a month. n To be continued ... by Jane Wibowo She can be reached at: (888) 917-8929

The Fabulous Balinese Smile

Giggling in Paradise BY DR. VIVIENNE KRUGER

PART TWO What really matters on Bali is “adat” (traditional law), religion, community, and family. A celebrated Florentine artist, Ambron, had a lifelong personal and creative

love affair with the island from the 1930s through the 1990s. A 1998 gallery exhibit of his paintings at the Kerta Gosa museum included insightful commentary on his native subjects: “the Balinese are content with a straw mat and a bowl of rice as long as they can have their ceremonies.” You do not need much in Bali—you just need enough to eat and to make the nec-

essary ritual offerings. The Balinese are primarily concerned with the sustenance and joy that comes from their rituals and ritual arts—the Ramayana spectacles; mythical Barongs and Rangdas; and the tall, graceful “penjors” proudly displayed at Galungan. This is the real food for the Balinese soul. The Balinese have traditionally been a landed people: they enjoy free accommodation in their family housing compounds and an inherited allotment of land and irrigation water in the village rice fields. This is the root of Balinese stability and serenity—which translates into abiding happiness and genuine, natural smiles. Content with relatively little, the land-rich Balinese still mainly live according to ancient agricultural rhythms. They will seek outside labor as tour guides or hotel/restaurant staff mainly to have extra money to carry out their ceremonial duties. Except for the bustling denizens of downtown Denpasar, the village-bound Balinese are not subject to the stress and anonymity of urban population centers. The legendary Balinese smile—which comes from someplace deep inside a disingenuous, happy heart—remains blissfully safe and intact. King of their own castles and family

than individual achievement and success. Art is both a lifelong obsession and a primary form of work on Bali: peasants by day, gifted painters by night, they fashion works of great aesthetic value first and foremost to honor and please the divinities. Bali supports a total population of over three million people—and therefore three million talented craftsmen: every resident here can be expressive and fulfilled. It is a religious dedication on Bali to carve elaborate, lava stone sculptures and wooden statues of deities and demons to embellish the island’s magnificent collection of royal palaces, shrines, and water temples. creative communities. The predominant local art forms are collaborative social enterprises: gamelan orchestras, wayang kulit puppet theatre, and dance troupe ensembles. You can glimpse the Balinese bringing their art to life everywhere: in open-air family pavilions, in the back of each store and house, and in specialized workshops. Everyone is occupied etching masks and furniture, weaving ikat cloth, designing batik patterns, and plaiting palm leaf baskets out of the rattan, bamboo, banana leaves, palm fronds, and teak and coconut wood that that the abundant tropics have handed them. Nature, geography, and climate all conspire to create and maintain the luminous Balinese smile. The Balinese inhabit an aromatic, fertile spice island lying close to the heart of the 3,000 mile-long Indonesian archipelago. Bali is a centered,

The gods have blessed them with a thick carpet of emerald rice paddies, whose continual harvest gives the Balinese not only life, but a profound sense of place and belonging in the universe. Bali’s crowning glory, Gunung Agung, is at the center of this tropical Shangrila: it is the sacred, fiery stepping stone for the gods and goddesses as they descend from heaven to earth. Irena Liza Irena Liza, last year’s Miss Indonesia for Miss Asia USA 2013, was born in Bandung. She initially studied in Singapore before coming to the United States to finish her education at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, PA majoring in Radiologic Sciences. Today, she works in the medical field as an ultrasonographer at the Los Angeles Center for Women’s Health in downtown Los Angeles. In her job, she skillfully operates an ultrasound machine and uses it to systematically scan patients in search of possible tumors or other disease entities. She also works at other private medical center doing a variety of diagnostic procedures on variety parts of the body as well.

Hi Liza, what do you remember the most about your past year as Miss Asia USA? “When I was first approached to participate in the Miss Asia USA pageant last year, I did not realize how richly rewarding and life-changing it would be. Now, one year later, it is with mixed sentiments that I pass the title to next year’s Miss Asia USA, Indonesia representative.

You work in the medical field, is there anything you wish to say regarding your field? One message I hope to share is that the relationship between a healthcare provider and the patients is sacred and precious. It is my dream that future generations will work together to restore healthcare to more of a healer-patient relationship with less of the power in the hands of politicians and corporations. About the pageant world, you have to pass your title this year, is there any message you want to tell? I want to extend a special thanks to Virgelia Villegas, the Chairwoman and Queen maker of Miss/Mrs Asia USA. Few people appreciate the amount of work and dedication that she puts in year after year to make the festivities as beautiful as they are. She continues to inspire me with her heart of gold. Well said Liza, you too are inspiration to us. No matter how much our contribution to community, it will add up for a better Indonesia. Thank you, and good luck for your next endeavour. n

IndoGo! was lucky enough to get some time of her busy schedule to interview her.

Well, I got help from Adi Mulyadi (BA'ES Kebaya), he was the first designer I thought of to help me with the costume. He is one of the top designers in the world for national Indonesian costumes. He has designed winning costumes for Miss Universe, Miss Grand International, Miss Earth and Miss Universe Indonesia.

In this past year, I had the fortune of meeting some prominent leaders in the Indonesian community. I got a chance to befriend to wonderful girls who participated with me in the pageants. I especially cherished the chance to attend the Indonesian Diaspora Convention in New Orleans. On the pageant, your national costume was dazzling. How did you prepare it?

Retold by Dr. Sal Murgiyanto To serve their darma as a ksatria, Karno and Arjuno will fight against each other at the battle eld till one of them dies. “Why should this happen to my sons?” Kunthi asks bewilderedly. She has been walking along Gajah Oya for twelve hours. Feet swollen, body bruised, and exhausted, Kunthi climbs a stone-platform to take a rest. Surprisingly, she finds a young man sitting there in meditation. She recognizes him as the person she has been looking for. Paying sembah, she addresses him respectfully, “Prince Karno, have pity on me. I come a long way to meet you in the hope that you could grant me my one and only wish: as your mother, I neither want to lose you nor Arjuno. Kindly withdraw from the battle and join your five Pandhava brothers instead.” “Auntie, what you have just said and done deeply upset me. First, you have made me come out of my meditation. Second, unreasonably you claim to be my mother and then arrogantly told me to withdraw from the battle. Dear the daughter of King Manduro, I was born twice into this world: first by an irresponsible mother who threw me as a newly born baby into the bed of Gajah Oya; secondly by a simple woman, who saved me from the great danger of Gajah Oya." “Ooh Prince Karno, I was only twelve years old and was not ready to be a mother when I found out that I was pregnant as a result of my meeting with the God of Sun, your

34

November 2014

father. This made your grandfather, the King of Manduro, furious. To keep my purity, following the guidance of your father, I had to give birth through my ear and without my agreement the newly born baby was then put into a floating cradle and thrown into the Gajah Oya. My father didn’t give me any chance to raise you. I feel numb and useless not able to understand the will of my father. Nobody knows how I have suffered day and night for not being able to give life to my own son since then.” “Auntie, your story is moving. But the fact remains that I was an unwanted child. So I have no reason to return to you and the Pandhava. For long I have regarded my first existence passed; my second life began when Nyi Adirata, a simple woman wife of the charioteer of the King of Astina, saved and took care of me with deep love and sincere heart to give me a new life. Later, my adopted father, the charioteer of the king of Astina, brought me to work for the king. This land and my status as the regent of Awangga were given by him as a reward. People call me Karno and say that my biological mother was Kunthi the mother of the five Pandawa.” “Oh Prince Karno, I more than understand if you want to erase my name from your life. Unable to pay my debt to you as a mother, then, you are welcome to end my life.” “Auntie, let me continue my story. You must be joking to ask me to withdraw from the battle? It is true that my stepfather was a simple man. But he and his wife raised me well to be ksatria. As a ksatria it is my duty to pay back the rewards I have received from the king of Astina. The one thing I could promise you, as Nyi Adirata has taught me, is to help ease your pain. Let the world hear to what I promise, you will not lose Arjuno by the end of the battle.

Excuse me Auntie, I have to leave, I promised to meet my wife before sun set!” When the sun rise the following day, Kaurava’s and Pandava’s troops have lined up facing each other ready to battle. Kunthi goes to meditate. Riding a battle chariot with Krishna as the charioteer, Arjuno leads the Pandava’s troops. Karno leads the Kaurava’s on his mighty chariot with the King Salya, as the charioteer. To end the battle before sun set, Karno takes his magical arrow Kuntowijaya to shoot Arjuno but missed. Arjuno retaliates with his magical arrow the Pasopati to shoot Karno successfully. A thunderous shriek ends the battle. Coming down from the prayer house, Kunthi brings a kerosene lamp to go to the battle field. She walks among dead bodies along the path full of blood in search of her sons. From afar she sees two chariots surrounded by troops with hundreds of torches. Kunthi struggles to reach that place where she sees Arjuno stands still mightily with his bow and arrow on his hands. Across, Karno laying down on his chariot holding Arjuno’s arrow on his chest. Hurriedly, Kunthi approaches Karno to carefully put his head on her lap. “Mother, I am most happy you come to meet me at the end of my life. Forgive me for my harsh words. I am doing it to cover my weaknesses. Step-mother Adirata has never tired telling me to be patient, to always respect and love you. You must have a reason to do what you did and I have to find the truth. Mother I have forgiven you long time ago. But I am only human: too arrogant to acknowledge that I missed you. Kunthi turns to Arjuno asking him to come down, “Pay respect to your eldest brother. Ask forgiveness and blessings from him. You have been with me all my life but this is the only time I can be with your brother Karno.” Arjuno pays respect and asks forgiveness from Karno. Embracing him, Karno says, “Arjuno my dear brother, please forgive me. I fail to be a good brother.“ Karno smiles and dies peacefully on Kunthi’s lap embracing Arjuno. n

RENUNGAN

INDOGOMAGAZINE.COM

(Matius 7:22-23). n Shalom: John R. Ability to Seize The Moment A business owner knows that 50% of sales is based on its own product and skills while the other 50% is based on opportunity. It is a continuous balance of the two, whether at point of start-up or a mature business entity. Let’s say at this point, we have the right product and skill to present to the world. Now it is about the opportunity. Understand the cycle of the business and how to deal with each phase. Long term experience is key, so try to stick to what we know. If we don’t, work for someone else first with a mentor’s help. We might have the money and the correct skill, but coming into it during a downturn is bad. Network with others, particularly within that business. It’s part advertising. Big known companies keep putting their ads on any kind of media outlet, even though we already know them. We have short term memories; we sometimes find ourselves purchasing something based on

the brand we saw last on advertisement. Network, and meet people while introducing your brand at the same time. Do it often and people will remember when they need it. Embrace sales in your own term; we all do it already. We constantly sell ourselves and our ideas, whether at team meeting, dating, to our kids, friends, interviews, posting on facebook, where to have our dinner date and much more. All of the sudden it is uncomfortable because there is money involved or our livelihood. Find a method of selling that works. Check our personality and embrace a method, whether it is active direct, passive, indirect, soft sales, internet, etc. Being able to sell will improve our opportunity dramatically because we can do it anywhere and anytime. -8 IACCT n

City Blessing Church and Gospel Life Community Church "Rooted in Fun" at

WALNUT FAMILY FESTIVAL 2014 Every year on the second Saturday of October, the City of Walnut holds a community event where many vendors, businesses, and non-profit organizations come together to show their service to the community to improve the quality of living in the City of Walnut. The festival started with a pancake breakfast sponsored by the Lions Club at Suzanne Park and followed with a Parade along La Puente Road where schools, equestrians, boys/girls Scouts, businesses, and non-profit organizations are able to highlight their services and are able to receive an award in their category for their participation. During the parade, families and neighbors are welcomed to join together to watch the parade along the street.

48

November 2014

This year Gospel Life Church and City Blessing Church joined forces together to built a float that was in line with this year’s festival theme, “Rooted in Fun”, for the parade. The float was built on top of a flatbed truck and was designed by Arditha Auriyane; it became the musician’s stage to perform. The team brought to the parade, dancers, flaggers, banners, musicians, singers, as well as gift-givers to the neighbors that were watching on the sidewalk. As the float reached the judges’ stop, the team did their flash-mob dance, inviting people to dance along with the song that they played. Supported by 75 people from both churches, they won 1st Place for the Church Category, making it a twice in a row win since last year.

The event continued to Suzanne Park with the opening ceremony at 11:30 am by the Mayor of Walnut and ended at around 6 pm. The event was supported by many businesses and organizations that were giving away free items, raffle and promotion materials, as well as a Kids Camp and Game booths for the kids and youth. Gospel Life Church and City Blessing Church also opened a booth to bless and love on the community. They gave free health check, free balloon-popped game to win prizes, and free balloon animals. City Blessing Church and Gospel Life Church is located at Miracle Hill, at 18901 Amar Road, Walnut, CA 91789. Service Times: Saturday 5 pm and Sunday 11 am in English, and 8:30 am in Bahasa Indonesia. n

Terima kasih banyak saya ucapkan kepada Batavia Band, Kool Breezz Band, Old Dogs New Tricks (ODNT) Band dan Timu-Tiwa Band. Juga Mbak Ida Ugas, Faizal Habib, Evi Yang. Pihak sponsor: Mas Feril Nawir, terima kasih banyak untuk panggungnya. Vera Greeb from Stem Tech dan Sam's Club, thank you so much for everything everyone, and God Bless You All. n
