IDEAS ROOM Issue 17

April/ May 2015

Note from Manager of COE Tech Support Office, Rick Murch-Shafer:

Why Cloud? Data storage has come a long way from floppy disks to USB flash drives. Each storage option has promised more reliability, storage, speed, etc. But they all required users to carry something with them and risk possible failure if lost, corrupted, or broken. There’s gotta be a better way…. and it’s called cloud

even keep versions of file changes and allow the user to recover deleted files. - Albert Einstein

You’ll never have to worry about losing your data from leaving a USB flash drive in a classroom, dropping it into your cup of coffee, or from mechanical failure. And best of all cloud storage can be cheap or free (my favorite description for anything). UNO faculty, staff and students have a couple of free cloud storage options available to them with Box and Google drive. More information about UNO Cloud Storage options can be found at http://goo.gl/9nWZ1P.

*See attached GaGa flyer for more information!

Slides.com Free online tool for simple creation of presentations. A couple of its unique features include the ability to transition from slide-to-slide in all directions (up, down, right, left) using navigation arrows and allows for embedding of materials into the presentation.

Prezi This free online presentation making tool helps the user create unique, eyecatching presentations. From the template options to determining the path along which the presentation moves, Prezi can be overwhelming but the result is likely to be one of a kind.

Google Slides A Google application meaning that not only is it free but the user, if a gmail user, does not have to make a log in account. Google slides function similarly to Microsoft PowerPoint in how to create and edit slides; however, the application has one huge benefit. It is an online application thus presentations are stored in the Google account and can be shared with others for easy collaboration on group presentations.
