ROCK ME IN 2023, WE DO IT FOR THE KIDS!
Busy busy busy the Temple is abound with activity. From the Circus committee getting all the details nailed down for our nine spectacular shows in late April to the Fife and Drum having a highly successful Johnny Holmes dance and turning around and preparing for a very busy St. Patrick’s day. The Chanters had a great Rock the Shrine night with POP ROCKS. Blast and Cast’s “Cabin Fever” was once again a fantastic night and huge success due to a tremendous amount of planning. The Motor Corp’s annual Frozen Pub Run was a chilling success. The Motor Corp and Sprint Cars teamed up for their CASH RAFFLE , I hope you didn’t forget to get your chance at a 10 Thousand dollar payout. These fund raisers are not only fun but the men of the El Riad Shrine, with help from some ladies, go above and beyond to make them successful, a big shout out to all of them. THANK YOU!!
The annual Midwinter Session for the MSA was canceled due to a huge winter storm and was put off until April 18 through a zoom style meeting, some how I don’t think that will be near as much fun.
The travelers, Ill Sir John Whitelock, recorder and Ill Sir Maury Richard, Treasurer are down in Texas gaining the additional knowledge to further their leadership roles, and just when you thought you couldn’t teach an old dog new tricks, they fool us.

The bathroom remodel is starting right after St. Patrick’s day, the Temple will remain open during the construction. There may be some minor inconveniences and we ask for your patience, it will be well worth it when finished. The bathroom project is not only just because we needed it, it is a huge factor in our building rental attractiveness. Well that’s all for now and I want to thank you all in advance for help at the Circus, your help is the ONLY way this Circus works.

EL RIAD FIFE & DRUM
ll of the happy news the Fife’s have to report, it is completely overwhelmed by the sudden passing of brother Mark Wolfe on Feb. 24. Mark was a beloved, long-time Fife member and part of the legendary “twin towers” base drum duo with Murray Driggs. A celebration of life event will be planned for a later time. His Fife and Drum brothers share our very heartfelt condolences to his Lady Cheri and the entire Wolfe family.
Well, the cover of the last edition of the Cactus says it all about our big 25th anniversary Johnny Holm party. Johnny and 900 of his friends were in the building partying like never before...What a night! Congratulations to our officers and all the Fife members for an incredibly successful event. We also used this event platform to generate donations directly to Shriner’s Healthcare. This year we raised $7,500! Those backers are: Wayne & Karen Johnson, Streich Construction, Interstates Battery, Vern Eide, Prairie States Trucking, Roger’s Plumbing, Milliron Granite, Midwest Stone, Digit-All, and Benardo Sanchez Painting.
Following Johnny, Brad Streich and his merry band of foodies served 120 spaghetti dinners at Wednesday Bar. Brad generously donated his costs back to the Fife and
by Bruce NortonADrum. He then went on to host a float making party for an entry in this year’s St. Patty’s Day Parade (his idea also). What fun Fife fellowship this was! Played bag toss, and grilled burgers as well. Check out the article with the finished picture of the float. This time together reminds me of building our boat for the Dell Rapids boat races 10+ years ago. Darrell Griggs earned his “Admiral” nickname in spectacular fashion as he held a full salute across the finish line while being bombarded with water balloons.
Cory Gray and his Lady Jen hosted a rush party on Friday, February 24. Eight new member candidates attended with the evening being highly successful by any measure. This party generated four petitions with four more pending. Truly a great night of Fife fellowship! Given how well these types of gatherings turn out, I am sure we’ll be doing more.
The remainder of the time we spent devoted to our 19th Annual St. Patty’s Day Bash! So exciting we actually had a float in a parade thanks to Brad Streich. With a big beer pong tourney, the Khartum Pipes and Drum on hand, and ECLIPSE performing, we were in for a big day. Not to mention all the food and green beer. Can’t wait to show you pictures in our next Cactus!
EL RIAD BIG BAND

by Dave Rowe, SecretaryBelow is schedule as of this printing with more dates coming. Hope you will join us!
LAST CALL dates
“Last Call” is busy booking summer “gigs” and practicing on some new material to be added to our set lists. We had a great year in 2022 and looking forward to a busier and better year in 2023. One of the highlights for this year: We have partnered with Lloyd Companies to help raise money for the Children’s Transportation Fund. Lloyd Companies has offered to match our tip jar contributions, “dollar for dollar” up to $5,000!!! That means we will have a great check to present to the Pote at the Fall Ceremonial. We are excited!
We have several repeat performances this year and some new ones. We are scheduling another “Thursday Night Live” in Watertown. We are hoping for a cooler than 100 degree night like last year! We are booked again this year for the annual Hot Summer Nights, at the W.H. Lyons fairgrounds, sponsored by the Sioux Falls Corvette Club and booked again for Nybergs Ace Car Show in July. Mark your calendars for Monday nights at McKennan Park, we will play again this year on Monday July 17. We have been asked to play for the Hangar Dance for the Air Guard Air Show in July as well. We will be appearing at the Barefoot Bar, in Okoboji again on Labor Day and will be the featured entertainment at the joint Lincoln/Washington High 1973 Class Reunion at the Shrine in September.
• Thurs., June 22: Thursday Night Live - Watertown
• Fri., June 23: Private party at the Shrine (wedding)
• Sun., July 2: Lake Madison (Private party)

EL RIAD SPRINT CARS
March flashed by with a blink of an eye, with busy Wednesday night socials. Happy birthday to all the Nobles that came and had drinks and meals on the Potentate and Divan. The 10k cash raffle with the Motor Corps was successful, congrats to all the winners of games and cash prizes.
April will bring us circus time and it will be a busy 4 days, April 20-23. Hope to see all our Nobles there helping
EL RIAD CHANTERS
Sing a song of happiness. We have had a successful Pop Rocks event. The place was rockin’ all night long. Big thank you to all the Chanters who put in the time to make this a great event. Special thanks to the Clown Unit for the help they provided. Also the Rickshaws for they’re help. Special thanks to the wives and significant others who helped with set up, event work, and clean up. Special thanks to the 17 entrants into the Karaoke contest. Congrats go to the winner Brianna, second place Valerie, and third place Jenny. What does it take to make a successful event? It takes many hands digging in to do a job and when all those hands work together you have the ingredients for success.
by Chad DeVriesmake this another great success for our temple.
Hopefully, April brings some warmer temps to help melt all the snow so we can get the cars ready for the summer parades and competition. Looking forward to getting the cars on the streets to do what we do, drive and slide for the kids.
by Evan BrinkTwo days later we were at the Pentagon to sing the national anthem for the Northern Sun Basketball Tournament Championship Games. This also was a successful event because we had good participation. Thank You Chanters.
Remember that you are welcome to join us on Tuesday evenings 7:00 p.m. sharp. Keep singing, you can’t sing with a frown on your face.
EL RIAD CLOWNS
For the first 22 years of my life I grew up on a farm in west central Iowa and Paul Harvey’s “So God Made A Farmer” has always rung true to me. If you are not familiar with it, God made the farmer on the 8th day. On the 9th day, God made a Dog according to the writings by Lorna Olitch, “So God Made A Dog”. As I sat and thought about Paul and Lorna’s writings, I wondered what was made on the 10th day...
So God Made a Clown
On the tenth day, God looked down on his newly created world and said, “I need someone who will spread cheer through all of mankind.”
So God made a clown.
God said, “I need someone who will shave his beloved beard, don a wig, oversized shoes, clothes that don’t fit or match, cover his face with paint, then go out into the public without a care in the world.”
So God made a clown.
God said, “I need someone who will teach himself how to juggle, do magic, tie balloon animals and ride a unicycle, then go out and perform these crafts in front of complete strangers.”
So God made a clown.
God said, “I need a character who will entertain at many circus shows to add excitement and childhood wonderment, bringing laughter and smiles to both the young and the old.
So God made a clown.
God said, “ I need someone who will rise with the sun on a weekend morning, drive to the meeting place, load heavy and awkward contraptions, travel to a town they have never been, unload the contraptions, and wait patiently for an hour in any and all weather conditions, only to re-load those same contraptions a short time later, travel back home to their families 8-10 hours later, just for the sake of entertaining unfamiliar faces of all ages along the streets, for a mere 30 minutes.”
So God made a clown.
God said, “I need someone who will visit my sick children in hospitals, and my elderly in nursing homes, in an effort to help them forget all the pain and loneliness they are experiencing, atleast for a short time.”
So God made a clown.
God said, “Lastly, I need someone who will do this without complaint, with a smile on his face, and joy in his heart, so he can spread that joy to people he would have never known.”
So God made a clown.

SHRINE NIGHT AT THE STAMPEDE
THE “WIFE AND DRUM” & THE FLOAT
Brad Streich and his merry band Fife leprechauns decided to build a float for the St. Patty’s Day parade in downtown Sioux Falls to help promote our bit St. Patty’s Day Bash! What an amazing time of fellowship that ensued to get the float ready. It is especially meaningful for all the Fife Ladies and friends that also helped.
The pictures show the float from start to finish. It featured a sound system, lights, and heaters! The Silent Messenger on the back looks like it was professionally painted. The first weekend of work featured a large group of Fifers at Brad Streich’s shop. Besides starting on the float, we squeezed in a bean bag toss tourney and grilled hamburgers.
The second weekend of work was even bigger as Brad Streich himself describes: “We had a rockin group of lads and lassies at the shop this weekend! This talented gang, not only did way fancier artwork, but also prepped, smoked and a few dedicated souls helped babysit the porkers til 10pm, while we
by Bruce Nortontested out the speakers and strobe lights on the float lol. Pork went in the roasters overnight with the secret ingredients and by noon Sunday, it smelled like heaven all the way down the street! Couple of the boys helped shred it all up, vacuum seal and clean up! Jodi and Paul Woessner, daughter Kennedi and best friend Katherine Gray (not only Future Fifers too, but, those two girls absolutely rocked the detailed artwork on the back of float!!)”
Final touches were added throughout the process and by any measure, the float turned out great! We will have more pictures of the parade and our St. Patty’s Day Bash! in the next Cactus. Thanks to our officers and everyone that worked on the float. Without question, this is what our fraternity and brotherhood as Shriner’s is all about!
Want to close by thanking the Ladies and friends again that helped out. Made our time together much better and fully supported our reputation as the “Wife and Drum”...We wear this reputation with honor!

Do
you remember that special person who made a difference in your life?

EL RIAD MOTOR CORPS
With all the snow we have had the last couple months its finally time to prepare for our 2023 riding season. Road Captain Lonnie Albers is setting up our parade and competition practices which will be starting soon. If you ride and would like to knock the winter rust off in a safe environment, check out our schedule of events on our Facebook page El Riad Motor Corps.
With March in the rear view mirrors, we want to give a special shout out to Vice Commander Jerry Hauff and his team for another successful cash raffle. Chuck Ihlen had his steady hand on the finances, Lonnie Albers and John Bayer helped most of the crowd get the wing span they all deserved on the 50/50 drawing, Past Commander Steve Haase ran the ticket board, Kevin and Robin Tomshack helped with the card games and the Emcee of all Emcee’s, Past Potentate and current Treasurer for El Riad Shrine,
by Bill ThompsonMo Richard was the perfect ring master. The success of this event is only possible with the time and commitment given from all our members and friends of the Motor Corps. So if you bought a ticket, thank you. If you have a friend who bought a ticket, thank them. If you see Ken Ward, Tom Anderson or Ernie Wevik, thank those guys for being among our top cash raffle sellers. Circus Days will be at all 5 Nyberg Ace locations. Please tell your friends about these events. It is a great opportunity to get tickets for the kids and the inflatables will be there from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Check your calendar for our May bars as we are planning for our world class fish fry. We will be posting the additional meals on the El Riad email blasts.
If the weather breaks enough for you to take a ride, remember to check the air in your tires after sitting over the winter. Ride safe.
MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE
The Fife and Drum hosted a Rush Party Friday, February 24 at the home of Cory Gray and his Lady Jen. Eight prospects accepted invitations to mingle with Fife and Drum members and their wives, learn about being a Mason/Shriner, and seeing first hand what our fraternity/philanthropy is all about. This type of gathering has such an immediate impact, especially for the wives of the prospects. Instead of relying on their husbands to try and explain or go by what they’ve heard from others, they get to experience what its all about. And we all know the Shrine fraternal experience is hard to explain, but great to enjoy. In settings like this, it makes it so much easier to recruit. This party resulted in four petitions with four others pending.
The membership committee would like to see every El Riad group host a rush party. Get some couples together, invite some friends, and work to secure some candidates. If you’d like a membership person to come in to present the Lodge/Shrine aspect of the evening, just let us know. There simply isn’t a better way to generate a new member and almost immediately assimilate him and his wife into our great fraternity. Doesn’t take much work, is a lot of fun, and highly effective. Please make it a point to plan one for your group soon!
The Spring 2023 Masonic Festival will be held on 3/31/23 through 4-1-23. What a terrific event this has become thanks to a lot of hard work by some talented Masons. The first degree is planned for Friday night that includes a taco bar. Rolls/coffee for Saturday morning, Jimmy John’s for Saturday lunch, and lasagna for the Saturday night Table Lodge. 2nd Degree and Master Mason

GIVE $100 AND FEEL LIKE A MILLION! Join the Shrine’s $100 MILLION DOLLAR CLUB
The $100 Million Dollar Club is a way for Shriners and non-Shriners alike to provide a gift of hope for a child in need. It’s an excellent opportunity to personally participate in the “World’s Greatest Philanthropy” — Shriners Hospitals for Children.
The Shriners operate 22 hospitals in North America dedicated to treating children with orthopedic problems and burn injuries. There are 18 orthopedic hospitals, three burn hospitals and one Shriners Hospital that provides orthopedic, burn care and spinal cord injury care. All care and services provided by Shriners Hospitals are totally without cost to the patient or family.
Since the founding of Shriners Hospitals in 1922, about $5.5 billion has been spent to provide quality and compassionate medical care to more than 675,000 children with orthopedic problems, severe burn injuries or spinal cord injuries. Most of these services are paid for by the Shriners Hospitals for Children Endowment Fund.
Without this fund, Shriners Hospitals would not be able to ensure optimum and compassionate patient care. In order to meet the needs of thousands of children in need of the expert care Shriners Hospitals provide, the endowment fund must continue to grow during these times of increasing cost of medical care.
Since approximately 95 percent of the annual Shriners Hospitals for Children operating budget will be spent in direct support of the 22 hospitals, your gift to its endowment fund is a gift to one of the world’s “purest” philanthropies.

CONFIDENTLY SPEAKING: VERONICA’S STORY
Ayear and a half of specialized speech therapy after cleft palate helped build Veronica’s confidence and her conversation skills.
Veronica was just 8 months old when she came to Shriners Children’s Chicago with a cleft palate, a small hole in the roof of her mouth, related to a jaw tumor removed just after birth. David Morris, M.D., chief of plastic surgery, performed two surgeries to repair the palate. She also had ear tubes placed.
Speech challenges are common for children with cleft palate. After Veronica healed from surgery, she resumed speech therapy through her state’s early intervention program. But her family said she made only limited progress in her talking skills over the next year
Veronica was 4 when she started speech therapy at Shriners Children’s with ”Mrs. Richards,” as she likes to call speech language pathologist Sarah Richards, MS CCC-SLP, who specializes in treating children with cleft and craniofacial conditions. Veronica struggled with many sounds she should have been making accurately at her age. “She would say ‘gaga’ for ‘dada’ or ‘kukky’ for ‘puppy,’ which made it difficult to understand her,” Richards said. These speech differences often occur as patients learn alternative ways to speak because of the cleft.
Veronica came every Tuesday to the Chicago location for an hour of speech therapy. Using a fun child-focused approach, they worked to correctly produce consonants
such as p, b, t and d. “Once she progressed in those areas, the focus shifted to later developing sounds, such as /s/ and /s/ blends (‘soup’, ‘spider’). Veronica made tremendous progress,” Richards said.
Veronica spent 17 months in therapy. At first, she “was very shy. With every week she was more excited and happy about ‘Ms. Richards’ and the activities they have been doing. When she saw her in the hall, she ran to her, hugged her and forget about my existence,” Veronica’s father, Dominik, said. After each session, Richards would discuss progress, or concerns if there were any. “She also gave us homework, usually activities or a list of words that we could practice at home.”
Working hard and playing with “Ms. Richards” had a huge role in Veronica’s overall development. With time, Veronica felt more confident speaking. “She was not shy around adults or kids anymore,” Veronica’s family said. Veronica also received speech therapy within her school district, where the therapist noticed her tremendous progress.
Veronica was discharged from speech therapy at Shriners Children’s in the summer of 2022. “Shriners Children’s Chicago has great doctors and therapists. It is a place to go when your child needs help. We will be forever thankful to Ms. Richards for everything she did for Veronica and our family,” Veronica’s family said.
