EL RIAD BLAST & CAST
by Sam SommersThe Blast and Cast unit had a special end of the year pheasant hunt at A1-Al’s Pheasant Ranch in Emery SD. It was a perfectly planned activity for SD bird hunting. Wind gusts at 30 mph and cold enough to freeze the —— (you know). The good news, weather wise it was sunny. That way the intelligent Roosters or “Einsteins” make it even sportier by getting up into the sun. After the first walk everyone started to get the lead correct, and birds started to fill up our hunting vests. Strauss Yelling Butt - Body - Beak - Boom & Lead ‘Em more kind of worked. But, he had to get out of his vehicle to be effective. We christened it the “SD Wind-Break Blocker”. Funny how every rig he used ended up with the same moniker.
It was everything a pheasant hunt should be and more. If you are a long time South Dakotan or a newcomer, come get to know us at a meeting. It is the 3rd Tuesday of the month at 7 pm. Come on down and check us out. Gather round the campfire, listen, laugh or tell a tail story.
Here is a little teaser on A1-Al’s. It’s a state of the art 20,000 sq . lodge that has 20 bedrooms with private baths.
Their large bar and game room is a welcome sight after a great day of hunting. Large TVs, pool, and darts will keep you busy while a world class meal is prepared in their grand hall. Private sitting areas and an amazing rock fireplace will allow you to burn off the adrenalin of a world-class pheasant hunt.
EL RIAD FIFE & DRUM
by Bruce NortonOh what a night and oh what a February!! Our 26th Johnny Holm event was absolutely an out-of-the park home run. Around 800 party goers packed the Shrine for what has become, our signature event. So many to thank, but especially our officer team of Dan Nichols (Brigadier), Mike Archer (2nd Lieutenant), Triston Hanson (Sargent-Major), & Tim Voegele (Exchequer). These guys have a ton of moving parts to see to and do so with great skill. We split a 50-50 pot of $2,800 with a lucky winner.
The real winner of the night however was Shriner’s Healthcare. As a result of our Backer Program, a total of $12,750 was raised as a direct contribution to our beloved philanthropy from 17 different companies or individuals. This program is independent of our event proceeds and totals close to $50,000 in total Backer donations over the last seven years. Amazing!! Please see our thank you flyers listing these contributors. Speaking of Backers, a big thank you to Larry and Lady Anita Bierman for their Backer donation.
February was also the month we hosted Wednesday Bar. Thanks to Scott Streich, Brad Streich, Kevin Tomshack, and Bethel #38 for a month of great food. Brad and his team prepared/served just over 200 delicious spaghetti dinners and tasty desserts on Valentine’s Day. The Ladies did a wonderful job decorating the Shrine Center for this special night. Also, special thanks to Kevin
Tomshack and his Lady Robin for preparing one of the Wednesday meals and donating all costs back to the Fife and Drum.
And when there was any extra time, we devoted it to preparations for our 20th annual St Patty’s Day Bash! Brad Streich will once again host our parade float efforts on March 9. Won’t be as much work as last year, leaving more time for cornhole and burgers! Very anxious to report on this big event in the next Cactus. This will be a party to end all parties with Beer Pong tourney sign-ups already ahead of prior years. March will be O’fun indeed!!
Finally, a shout out to one of our founding members, Walt Leyse and long-time member Wayne Johnson for speedy recoveries!

WATERTOWN SHRINE UNITS NEEDS YOUR HELP SPONSORING JOY RANCH
by Ron MoehringThe Watertown Shrine Units are asking the Shiners of El Riad for some assistance.
Last year our units along with the NE General Auxiliary and Watertown Masonic organization sponsored a weeklong camp at Joy Ranch for Shrine Hospital Patients.
Joy Ranch is a place for those with disabilities or challenging life circumstances, we are a place to enjoy nature and participate in horse related activities and other experiences. All in a barrier free and stairway free environment that everyone can access. Last year’s camper expressed that Camp Explore gave them a chance to be themselves and bond with other shrine kids.
At this writing we have over twice the number of camper registered than we had last year. We are asking the other units of El Raid for your support both monetary and with assistance at the camp. The Camp will be July 8 through the 11. Last year our unit helped with activities camp including horseback riding, petting zoo, kayaking,
swimming, fishing, archery, crafts, bingo, and karaoke and preparing and serving 3 meals a day. We also furnished an overnight chaperone.
We are thinking we could use 10 to 15 folks a day to assist us. Helping at the camp maybe one of the most memorable experiences you will have in your Shrine career. You don’t need to stay the whole camp if you can help one day it would be appreciated. If you want to stay for more than a day Joy Ranch has a campground with electrical hook-ups or 16 uniquely themed hotel rooms available.
There are two ways your unit can help fund the camp. The first is to send a check to the Watertown Shrine at 215 N Broadway Watertown SD 57201 or make a donation at the Spring Ceremonial designated to Camp Explore.
If you have questions or would like to volunteer contact Jeff Gamber (605) 881-3974 Troy Stavig (605) 520-0388 or Ron Moehring (605) 280-3397.

EL RIAD CLASSIE AUTOS
by Bruce WentzelWell, it’s that time of year with the weather being spring like everyone is getting the fever to get their car out. So, here are a few tips to help get your car ready for the road and an enjoyable summer.
Test your battery after the long winter to see if it kept its charge and also to be sure it still has the ability to start your car.
Check your tires, hoses, belts, and other rubber parts that might have developed some dryness or cracks and make sure your tire pressure is where it needs to be.
Check all your fluids and keep an eye out for any leaks or puddles beneath your car. An oil change isn’t a bad idea either if the car has been sitting for a few months.
Checking your lights is also a good idea, do a walk around and make sure they are working.
Something we forget to consider is the fuel. With today’s fuel blends you might want to consider adding an additive like Sea Foam and topping it off with fresh gas to help ensure that fuel system stays clean.
Give it a bath. If it’s your first drive of the year now is a good time to start out right with a full detail job consisting of a good wash and wax and don’t forget to clean the interior.
And finally double check your License and Insurance. Have a fun time enjoy your cars and fellowship.
FATHER DAUGHTER DANCE
EL RIAD CHANTERS
The Chanters “Rock the Shrine” event lived up to its name for the 9th time on February 24th. The karaoke contest brought in great talent with four winners claiming $1100 in prize money, trophies, a guitar and concert tickets. The Pop Rocks Show was outstanding again. Loved by all.
A new feature this year was a mink fur raffle. A great time was had by many taking pictures in furs with the “shotocaster” guitar and the band pictured in the backdrop. The mink went to a woman from Alaska who plans to wear it at the Ididtarod.
The 50/50 raffle sent the winner home with $528. The crowd included local friends and some from Great Britain and even Australia. Be sure to save the date for next year:
Our sing out kicked off the NSIC woman’s tournament with he National Anthem.

$100 MILLION DOLLAR CLUB
The $100 Million Dollar Club is a way for Shriners and non-Shriners alike to provide a gift of hope for a child in need. It’s an excellent opportunity to personally participate in the “World’s Greatest Philanthropy” — Shriners Hospitals for Children.
The Shriners operate 22 hospitals in North America dedicated to treating children with orthopedic problems and burn injuries. There are 18 orthopedic hospitals, three burn hospitals and one Shriners Hospital that provides orthopedic, burn care and spinal cord injury care. All care and services provided by Shriners Hospitals are totally without cost to the patient or family.
Since the founding of Shriners Hospitals in 1922, about $5.5 billion has been spent to provide quality and compassionate medical care to more than 675,000 children with orthopedic problems, severe burn injuries or spinal cord injuries. Most of these services are paid for by the Shriners Hospitals for Children Endowment Fund.
Without this fund, Shriners Hospitals would not be able to ensure optimum and compassionate patient care. In order to meet the needs of thousands of children in need of the expert care Shriners Hospitals provide, the endowment fund must continue to grow during these times of increasing cost of medical care.
Since approximately 95 percent of the annual Shriners Hospitals for Children operating budget will be spent in direct support of the 22 hospitals, your gift to its endowment fund is a gift to one of the world’s “purest” philanthropies.

EL RIAD SHRINE MEMBERSHIP
by Bruce NortonEl Riad ended 2023 with a total membership of 1,282 Nobles. We had a total gain of 45 new Nobles, with a loss of 93 Nobles. That loss figure also included the number of losses in 2022 due to a reporting technicality that had to be recognized in 2023 instead. So, the 2023 loss number is unusually higher for that reason. Without the 2022 carryover, we came close to a net increase for the year!
The membership team leaders (PP John Archer, PP Charles Brown, and Bill Thompson) have set a goal of 75 new Nobles for 2024. This is an aggressive number, yet very doable. It›s doable, because we have 1,282 dedicated Nobles that will help knock this goal out of the park!
To reach/exceed 75 new Nobles in 2024, your membership team will emphasize having each unit host their own Rush Party. We are asking the leadership of each El Riad group to make generating new members one of their priority’s this year. With that focus, we hope each group can average bringing in 3-5 new members, allowing El Riad to exceed the goal of 75 with some room to spare.
The Fife and Drum has already hosted a rush party for the second year in a row at Cory and Jen Gray’s home. This is such a great way to introduce the candidate’s wife to our great fraternity. Having the spouse meet other spouse’s and see first hand what our great fraternity is all about is easily the number one advantage when recruiting a new Mason/Shriner. This rush party generated SIX SIGNED PETITIONS!
Your membership team is emphasizing the word POSITIVE this year. We aspire to a Positive membership result in 2024, a Positive membership effort by all El Riad groups, and a Positive fraternal experience by all El Riad Nobles.
Please contact the membership team to help organize your group’s rush party. We can help with ideas, and even attend a party to present Mason/Shriner information. We urge all groups and Nobles in those groups to do all you can to bring in new members in 2024. We hope to make this year the best year yet!!
EL RIAD SHRINE STATED MEETING
Tby John Whitelock P.P., RecorderFebruary 14, 2024 • El Riad Temple • Sioux Falls, South Dakota
he meeting was opened at 7:00 p.m. by Potentate Doug Kristensen. Outer Guard Bruce Norton gave the Invocation. Potentate Kristensen then led the Nobles in the Shrine Pledge of Allegiance.
Noble Joe Bergsmith, created at the November 2023 Ceremonial, was welcomed to his first stated meeting by Potentate Kristensen.
The minutes of the Stated Meeting held on December 13, 2023 were, upon proper motion and second, approved as printed and distributed.
Recorder Whitelock told the nobility that the Board of Directors voted to nominate Ill. Sir James Burma, PP to the position of 4th Vice President of the Midwest Shrine Association (MSA). Ill. Sir Burma will move up the MSA line and will be President of the Association when El Riad hosts the MSA winter and summer activities in 2028. A motion was made and seconded to approve the nomination of Ill. Sir Burma. Following discussion, the motion passed.
Treasurer’s Report: Maury Richard, PP, Treasurer, gave the financial report for January 31, 2024.
Upon proper motion and second, the Treasurer’s report was approved.
Building and Entertainment Committee Report: Chief Rabban Mark Richard reported on several items of discussion or action by the Committee:
• Venue sales report and needs of the venue, to include outdoor signage, a curtain wall, painting of the kitchen, east terrace and east restroom, rate change, advertising.
• Three new members on the B&E are Keith Backer, Darin Groos, Alan Machmiller.
• Purchasing a Point-of-Sale system for the bar has been tabled.
• Carpet replacement options.
• Repair of the north wall and foundation.
• Repair of the roof is pending by MJ Dalsin.
• South parking lot lights have been replaced.
Upon proper motion and second, the report was approved.
Chief Rabban Richard noted that fundraising forms must be submitted for every fundraising event, whether it is an annual event or new event. Parade approval forms must
similarly be submitted for parades. Units that don’t parade but perform, i.e. Back 40 Boys, Last Call Band, etc. shall use parade approval forms for their events. Approval of all unit/club events by the Potentate is necessary for the unit/ club and temple to have insurance coverage for the events.
COMMITTEE REPORTS:
Chief of Staff: Chief of Staff Dave Murphy reiterated the need for units to submit event and parade forms for approval. Units and clubs that have annually recurring events need to ensure that the dates of those events are on the El Riad calendar for at least two years in advance, so that the venue coordinator does not double-book dates when working with rental customers. The Sioux Falls circus is April 25-28 and the Spring Ceremonial has been moved to May 11. Lastly, the Pote’s Parade is June 22 in Yankton, and is being held in conjunction with the Annual Communication of the Grand Lodge of Masons of South Dakota. The parade will feature both Shrine and Masonic entries.
Membership: Membership Committee member Bruce Norton noted that the committee’s goal for 2024 is 75 new nobles. There are already 15 signed petitions awaiting action. He encouraged units to have their own rush parties, and noted the recent success of the Fife & Drum unit in obtaining 5 petitions from their rush party. Noble Norton said that the Membership Committee is targeting corporations that require their employees to be active in the community as a way to obtain new members. The word of the year is “positive” both in attitude and a membership goal.
Circus: Circus Chairman Jeff Landborg reported that circus season begins at Chamberlain on April 23-24, Sioux Falls on April 25-28, and Mitchell on April 29-May 1. He told the nobility that manpower is always a need at the satellite circuses. Circus Day in Sioux Falls is set for April 6 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the five Nyberg’s Ace Hardware stores in Sioux Falls: West 41st, 12th & Kiwanis, East 10th, 41- & Minnesota, and Downtown. Host units for each store are the Blast n’ Cast, Rickshaws, Steel Drum Unit, Sprint Cars, and Hillbillies. In addition, the Motor Corps will provide inflatables, the Clowns will be
in makeup, and the Culinary Unit will provide the food at each location. Thanks go out to Noble Kevin Nyberg for once again hosting Circus Day at his stores. Noble Landborg spoke on the need for more butchers at the Sioux Falls circuses, as money is being left on the table when our patrons cannot get product in the stands. The Circus Committee will be creating a group to assist with raising sponsorship funds for the Sioux Falls circus, as the marvelous Noble Marv Lovro, longtime circus committee member, fundraiser and former circus chairman, is taking retirement from the circus. The committee’s goal is to raise $100,000 in sponsorships and noble ticket sales prior to the first day of the circus on April 25.
Stop Burns: Chairman Dave Murphy plans to visit Shriners Childrens – Galveston on March 23 while on vacation. Galveston is a primary burn hospital in the SC healthcare system.
Communications: High Priest & Prophet Steve Haase noted that the deadline for submitting items for publication in the Cactus is now the first of the month. This is a hard deadline, and it will permit the Cactus to be mailed and received prior to or on the first of the following month.
Divan Reports: Assistant Rabban Scott Denney reported on the Fife & Drum and the Oriental Band. High Priest & Prophet Steve Haase reported on the Motor Corps/Sprint Cars raffle. Captain of the Guard Brian Schultz reported on Back 40 Boys, Brookings Shrine Club and the Hillbillies. 1st Ceremonial Master Paul Berndt reported on the Classie Autos. Marshal Tony Bachman reported on the Blast and Cast.
Trip Reports: Potentate Kristensen reported on the recent Pote’s Trip to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.
Other Business: Noble Chuck Ihlen reminded the nobility that tickets are available for the Motor Corps/ Sprint Cars raffle for $100 each. The grand prize is $10,000 plus federal taxes paid.
There being no further business before the body, Potentate Kristensen thanked the Provosts for tiling the doors. A motion was made and seconded to adjourn the meeting at 7:46p.m. The motion was approved.
Respectfully submitted,
John Whitelock, PP, RecorderBig Band Dance
