MESSAGE FROM THE POTENTATE Illustrious Sir, Chris Hagenian

Mary

and I thank you for your trust and confidence during the 2015-year. It is truly an honor to serve El Zaribah and we will do so with the utmost honor and respect for our traditions and a keen eye to the future of our Shrine. 2015 is starting out to be an exciting year! We have the Pote’s Ball coming up, visitations to other Temples for their inaugural balls, WSA in Las Vegas, Ceremonials, and a calendar packed full of events and few in the summer to keep us occupied and in the loop during those “dark” months. Thank you to all the units and clubs who participated in the Fiesta Bowl Parade. We had a good showing and received a fair amount of national advertising that is worth way more than our advertising budget could ever support. The pancake breakfast went well, we broke even on the event, but it looked liked everyone had a good time before the parade and received some substantial nourishment. The Theme this year is: Fun, Fraternalism, & Philanthropy. Fun: We need to keep this aspect at the front of everything we do, once our efforts become “work” we will cease to exist. Fraternalism: We are here because of our Fraternity and we must honor that aspect. From our Fraternity comes our members therefore we must take charge to ensure a healthy Fraternal Relationship. Philanthropy: The cause that brings us to support our Temples of Mercy. The smile on a child’s face, the hug from a loving parent, the satisfaction of being part of a cause bigger than you. This year we have chosen the Long-haired Kachina. (More information on page 5 of the ‘Tales.) The Divan has been working on several initiatives to improve our Temple. First we are researching the option of installing Point of Sale (POS) machines in the Red Fez Room. This would allow us to take credit/debit cards for members and rentals, keep electronic inventories, generate statistical reports, and cut down on time spent by staff calculating this information. Second we have been working with Illustrious Sir Leo Balthazor on our website. We will be launching a Shopping Cart section where anyone online will be able to buy Shrine Merchandise, Event Tickets, Pay Dues, and Make Donations etc. We will be starting with Past and Present Potentate Bolos, Pote’s Ball Tickets, 2015 1st Ladies Jewelry, and 2015 Men’s and Women’s Shirts. We will need a few committee members to help our Oriental Guide spearhead this new operation, please contact Ken for more details on how you can help. In Closing, Lady Mary and I appreciate your continued support of the Temple and us and wish everyone a safe and prosperous year! Yours In The Faith, Chris Hagenian 3

Long-Haired Kachina (Katoch Kachina)

The Long-haired Kachina is one of the most pervasive of all kachinas. It is danced from the Rio Grande to the Hopi Mesas in almost the same form. "They appear in a group and sing a very melodious song which may be one of the reasons that they are such favorites. In fact they have danced in late August on First Mesa in direct contradiction to the feeling that only Masau'u can be danced out of season. Probably this was due to the presence of the Tewa people who do not have a closed kachina season. Their purpose is to bring rain, and it is said that they seldom dance without the appearance of a soft gentle rain to help the crops grow. His long black hair hangs down his back, with bangs over the forehead. The half mask is blue with a lower border of purple with blue rectangles over the mouth and has black rectangular eyes. Two fluff feathers hang over the long black beard. There is a long vertical Macaw feather at the back of the from: http://www.hopikachinasekatahead. log.com

From the Hospital Chairman

I have

had the privilege and honor to work with some of the most amazing and incredible people throughout my life. I’ve worked with people who I highly respect and stand in awe of their abilities and accomplishments. For the past five years, I’ve been blessed to have the opportunity to work with Barb Hineman. She has impacted so many lives and I don’t think I’ve ever met a more caring or thoughtful person. The compassion, love and care she gave while assisting each our Shrine Kids and families is something that one must witness to truly appreciate. I consider myself very fortunate to have served with Barb for five wonderful years. While Barb is no longer with us, her memory will be with us always. I can think of no better tribute to Barb than to say she made this world a better place and she made me a better person. If anyone ever earns their angel wings before departing this earth, Barbara Hineman would be at the top of the list. Fraternally, Jim Miller, PP Hospital Chairman

Taking and Sharing Photos by, Krista Harmsworth, Arabian Tales Staff

Each year, a submission is made for a Dromedary Award for a Print Magazine award from Imperial. Each year, when the winners and honorable mentions are awarded, they give feedback as to how we can improve our magazine. We have already made some great strides with some of our changes. One additional area of needed improvement has to with the quality and subject of the images we choose to use. So, this is why we are bringing this series to you! We look forward to seeing the pictures you take and the memories you share! So many times, we hear the words, “I wish they would have used my picture” or “Why didn’t my picture make it in the magazine” or even, “I’ve never even had my picture in the ‘Tales”. This can all easily be solved! Here are some tips for taking GREAT pictures and how to share your picture with the rest of the El Zaribah Shrine Family! * Use the rule of THIRDS - think of a tic tac toe board * Keep your “horizon line” along either the top third or bottom third -- don’t put the “horizon line” in the middle * Keep your subject along the tic tac toe lines like George (Z-Klown) does with his picture from the PIR

PArADE InFO

Once

again, J C Reece and Randy Peters are working to get our newest Nobles introduced to our Shrine Family through our parades. We continue to stay in contact with all the parade Units and Clubs who occasionally have trouble getting members to attend parades. Working with our parade groups allows us to help new Nobles get involved. We find out if groups have cars or trucks that need a driver, need help with the camels, etc. We then contact the new Nobles and ask them to fill in the vacant spots. New Nobles sign up for the El Zaribah WebNet Google Group (left side of el-zaribah.org) for event notification. When the new Nobles are available, they contact the Assistant Rabban or High Priest & Prophet. All who can help us out, are assigned to a Unit or Club for that parade/ event. We have been working this through for just over a year. We have had many parade positions in the past few months filled by new Nobles! This process is working well. We not only help the Unit or Club get a full roster, but the new Nobles get to know many of the Nobles in the Units and Clubs. This is not a recruiting tool, but a way for new Nobles to get an idea of what each group is about and help utilize our parade attractions. If you are a new Noble to El Zaribah, and would like to help us out and allow our Units and Clubs to utilize all of their parade equipment, cars, animals, etc. please contact J C Reece (High Priest & Prophet) 602-531-6545 or Randy Peters (Assistant Rabban) 480-296-3957.

Units and Clubs

Clowns

To all Clowns, Nobles, family, and friends. It was an honor to serve the Nobility and the Unit as the president for 2014. Of course all good things must come to an end and with these warm words of goodbye to my reign of terror, I welcome the 2015 leaders and wish them well and know they will receive as much (if not more) support as I received in 2014. There is obviously something bitter sweet about being the one identified as the leader for any given year. When things go well, like the Circus and/or any event where people walk away smiling, people praise the one elected to lead. Then when things go bad, everyone comes out and points their finger in your direction. It honors me, to say that “NO ONE” pointed their fingers at me and when it came to our successes it was a collective success. As a leader, it is important to share the successes, so 2014 was the best year ever for the Unit and I see nothing but greatness for 2015 and beyond. Finally, good luck in 2015 to President, Doug “BB” Fry; Vice President, Bruce “Goober” LaBell; Secretary, David “Farkle” Lowry; and Treasurer, Bill “U-Hoo” Enloe who have been elected to serve the El Zaribah Clown Unit in 2015. We look forward to your guidance and support.

Culinary Unit

Greetings from behind the line! Things have started picking up as the temps have been dropping. The Holidays are past and hopefully a fond memory. We are all sad about the passing of First Lady Cheryl and want to express our sympathies to her family and Illustrious Sir Ed. We wish him well in his quest for Imperial Outer Guard. Now for a shameless plug to join our unit. When you join us, you not only get to rub elbows with me but you get a free apron and a new shirt. We formally meet in the Culinary Room on the third Tuesday of the month at 7:00 in the evening but we also enjoy a meal in the Red Fez Room prior to that. We don’t have to serve that one so it is much more enjoyable. Come and join us. You have a far better chance of not getting beans or gravy spilled on you from our

Arabian Tales

side of the serving table. That’s the best incentive I can think of for joining a unit! Plus you will get to meet all active Shriners at the meetings. What more could you ask? We have been very active and under the leadership of our new President Lenny, will be ever more so. He is planning on getting us involved in the Parade business. Just another reason to join Culinary! Come see if we drive over anyone! See you from behind the serving line; I am the one wearing the clean apron! Hal, our Past President, is the one with the gravy on his shoe! Jimmy is the confused one. Ken Conner, Culinary Scribe

Director’s Staff

Welcome to 2015! You’ll hear that a lot but in the Director’s Staff we really mean it. 2014 was a great year led by our immediate Past President (Junior?) Larry Frank. We had more fun, camaraderie - a lot more, and made less money than ever... it was perfect! Moving into 2015 we have our first official meeting on Wednesday January 28th with the magic cocktail hour at 5pm, dinner at around 6-6:30pm with a meeting upstairs for the boys at 7pm. Bob, Tolly and Jerry are preparing Rock Cornish Game Hens for dinner...whoop whoop! Don’t forget our Old Fashioned Steak Fry on Saturday March 7th...mark your calendars!

Greeters

2014 was a very successful year under the able leadership of Roger Hall. We had a good turnout for the parades, corn fest and circus. We have new officers who are excited to support El Zaribah and the activities for 2015. At our November Greeter gathering we elected Nick Nichols as President, Gary Lionberger as 1st Vice President, Ted Brownell as 2nd Vice President and Chuck Richards as our perennial Secretary/ Treasurer. We kicked off the New Year with our first ever Crab Feed and Raffle featuring fresh dungeness imported from Astoria, Oregon. Larry Howard is busy arranging our Sweetheart Dinner in February and all of us are

getting prepared for our joint Official Visit with the Temple Guard and Provost Units in March. The Greeters’ stretch limousine recently received a new set of tires and is ready for the new parade season. Like the Marines, we’re always looking for a few good men. We meet the third Monday of each month at the El Zaribah Shrine Center. Join us at 5:30 PM for libations and dinner. Ellis (Nick) Nichols, President

Patrol

To start off with I thank all the members of the Patrol and their Ladies for their support during my year as Captain. We had a great showing at six parades in November and December alone. I want to give a special thanks to Illustrious Sir Gerry Massey for stepping up and agreeing to accept the nomination to be our Captain in 2015. Yes, the Patrol is a very active Unit and you new members of the Shrine who have not joined a Unit as yet should seek us out. We are looking for a few good veterans. Does that moniker sound familiar? Remember a few years ago when the U.S. Marine Corps used a similar by-line in their recruiting commercials? Your El Zaribah Shrine – Legion of Honor Unit is also looking for members. The LOH is a very unique Unit within El Zaribah. So what makes us so unique? Besides being Master Masons and members of El Zaribah, we are VETERANS. As veterans or active duty members of the Armed Forces there is a very special bond among the members. Each member has or is currently serving his country and has made a sacrifice to protect and preserve his country and its freedom. Our objectives are to “Foster a spirit of Patriotism, Love of Country and Flag” and perpetuate the memory of our Comrades in Arms who made the Supreme Sacrifice. The Unit slogan is “Servicemen in the Service of El Zaribah”. Some of our efforts in support of El Zaribah include: presentation of Colors at Stated Meetings, leading El Zaribah in parades, conducting patriotic flag retirement ceremonies and other activities as requested by the Potentate. Currently we are considering the options of representing El Zaribah and presenting the Colors at professional sporting events in the local area. Additionally, a necrology program is being considered to honor those departed El Zaribah veterans. For more information please contact the Adjutant at 623-486-8367.

Greetings from the Sun Lakes Shrine Club. We hope you all had a joyous holiday season and a happy new year. Daughters of the Nile

Where does the time go? I can’t believe it is the Holiday Season already. We have a full schedule of holiday parties as well as getting together toys, games and gift cards to send to our special children in our hospitals. Last month, several of us traveled to Albuquerque, New Mexico and visited Yucca Temple for the Official Visit of SQ Marsha Sowers. We had a nice visit with our counterparts and shared that special bond that the daughters have with each other. We also brought goodwill and greetings from all our members. We will be visiting other temples and bring greetings from the Phoenix area. The Sun City Nile Club and Mesa Nile Club have held their official visits with special lunches, fun and games. Our clubs work hard raising funds, doing sewing projects and gathering items to be sent to our hospitals for the children. We are preparing for a busy January, 2015. Our Supreme Queen Marsha Sowers will be with us on January 26 for her Official Visit with a banquet to follow. We are looking forward to her visit and hope all of our members will be there to welcome her. She is a snowbird and a member of Sun City Nile Club. WISHING YOU AND YOURS A BLESSED HOLIDAY SEASON AND A HAPPY, HEALTHY NEW YEAR. May the best in 2014 be the worst in 2015. Shining in Nile Love, Elizabeth “Betty” Gough, Queen
