DIVAN NEWS

Note from the Pote...

September was a month to remember. Returning from an Alaskan Cruise with 76 wonderful, adventurous travelers and reflecting on all the fun that was shared by all. Turning 72 is a milestone for a West Virginia kid who wondered if he would live to be 21. As one reflects on everything that has happened over the years we realize that everything happens for a reason and in His time. There are many events and OVs (Official Visits) coming up in the next months. Check out the Shrine Calendar and make plans to attend an event or OV. All Nobles and Ladies are invited to attend. Our Fall Ceremonial at Lake Havasu is on October 29th. The flyer and petitions are available on line and in the Arabian Tales. We ask that all petitions be in to the office not later than October 12th in order to get them processed in a timely manner. Please call our Recorder, Ill Sir Jack Garrett at 602-231-0300 or email

him at recorder@el-zaribah.org. Ill Sir Phil Houghton is our Honoree and we will have a great ceremonial and banquet planned for all who attend. After the banquet our Hospitality Chairman, Noble Ron Miller and his crew will have a wild Halloween party in the hospitality room. The fall Parade season for El Zaribah Shriners kicks on September 24th at the Pinetop / Lakeside, Lake Havasu on October 29th, Anthem Veterans Day on November 5th, Tempe Veterans Day on November 11th, Winslow Parade on November 19th, Glendale Parade on December 10th, and Fiesta Bowl Parade on December 31st. Our Shrine and our membership have seen 120 years of fun, fulfillment, and hard times. We have seen membership at 6000 Nobles in the 1980s and 1990s and we now have 1354 of the best Nobles around. We have over 300 plus life members. 311 of these members’ age and years of service to the Shrine and El Zaribah combine to be 110 years and more. 222 of these life members are 80 or

older. New Nobles are our future in serving El Zaribah and our Shriners Hospitals for Children®. We can share our adventures and coach these new members into being the best Shriners we have ever had. We have asked that each Noble attend Lodge on a regular basis, attend our Stated meetings, participate in a club or unit, share the fun and fellowship in all our events, look for GOOD men to become Masons, and look for GOOD Masons to become Shriners. Have you carried a Lodge petition of a new Mason this year? Fraternally, George WE PUT CHILDREN FIRST

2016 Goals for All...

Attend Lodge regularly. Attend Shrine regularly. Look for good men to become Masons. Look for good Masons to become Shriners. We all can make a difference.

HOSPITAL / IMPERIAL NEWS How Shriners Shriners Hospitals Helps Spirit Halloween With Hospitals for New Tagline Children are Funded from PR Voice, September 2016 Looking for a new tagline to better capture the essence of their mission, Spirit of Children Dave Polner, PP turned to the 134 children’s hospitals they partner with for suggestions. Member InterMountain Unit Shriners Hospitals for Children® Have you ever wondered how Shriners Hospitals for Children® makes the necessary money to keep offering care? Well, here are a few of the many ways we generate that income. First, all members of the Shrine pay an assessment of $5 yearly when they pay their dues. This assessment amounts to roughly $ 1,400,000 (Shrine wide). Along with the moneys raised locally by the units and clubs to the SLC Transportation Fund, which supports Salt Lake City and Los Angeles Hospitals. A second method is raising funds through donations from people outside the Shrine. We have all seen the ads with Alec on TV or in magazines, which have proven to be very successful. These ads have generated a lot of interest in Shriners Hospitals, leading to many unsolicited contributions to further fund us. Third, the recently instituted Revenue Recovery Cycle, or the recovery of costs from the insurance companies, has helped raise a significant amount of income. This program is still being refined, and hopefully when fully in place, will be a boost to our bottom line. Lastly, SHC generates income from assets donated to the Shrine. These assets, plus investments in the Endowment fund, further supplement our hospitals. All of this would not be possible without your support. Your continued support of the El Zaribah General Fund is also important; for, without a local Shrine, who will support the hospitals?

Tara Paustian and Julie Fannin, members of the child life staff at Shriners Hospitals for Children - Tampa, provided the winning tagline that is now being used in Spirit Halloween’s promotional material. The winning tagline: “Spirit of Children provides a Prescription for Play...Touching the lives of hospitalized children in a fun, not so scary way.” Congratulations to Tara and Julie for their winning creativity.

UNIT and CLUB REPORTS Culinary

Ken Conner, Scribe until relieved!

The Shrine is back in operation after a long hot summer. We Just served our first Unit head dinner of the new season and look forward to the Stated meeting coming up. We have practiced all Summer with our new serving techniques and fared well at the CornFest and the first unit head with no notable spills and/or burns. We are just damn good I guess. My apron did take some butter hits at the CornFest, though. That is an improvement from years past. This admission may come as a surprise to some of my addicted readers to see me acknowledging this, as I always say I am the one in the clean apron. In my defense, mine was one of the cleaner aprons though. President Lenny says we are so good that he has cancelled our monthly meetings for the rest of the year. He also tendered his resignation, so we open the floor to any nominations. Anyone wanting the position is eligible. With no meetings scheduled I don’t think we can replace him. The unintended consequences of random thoughts can have unexpected results. Better rethink this Lenny. That’s all of the news from behind the line for now. Remember I am the one with Semi-clean apron and Ralph has the butter on his shoe.

Motorcycle

Bob Hicklin

We are ready for the new season of parades and events. Our drill team has held several practices this fall and performed at the annual Payson rodeo parade, we are getting ready for Pinetop, Lake Havasu, Anthem, and Tempe. At the September stated meeting the Motorcycle Unit presented a check for $15,000 to the Potentate and in addition at the October meeting we will be presenting another large check. These funds are a result of the Unit fundraising activities for the year 2016, many thanks to the Unit and all other Shriners who helped with our events.

will be a great addition to our brotherhood and looks forward to riding with us. We also have five (5) additional applicants who should be voted in at the October meeting. If you have a Motorcycle and like to ride I would encourage you to contact any member of the Unit and we will explain the procedure for membership. We meet at 7:00 on Thursday night after the stated meeting in the Motorcycle room at the Shrine Center, come early for dinner with us. Rifle raffle, we are selling tickets for a beautiful rifle engraved with Masonic information and emblems. It will be in Lake Havasu and the drawing will be on October 29th at the men’s luncheon. The tickets are almost gone. We will only sell 500 and the cost is $10.00 each so ask any member or see it at Lake Havasu. You do not need to be present for the drawing. Ride safe. See you on the road to Lake Havasu.

Oriental Band

Oriental Band Scribe

Hi from the Oriental Band! We had a nice summer and hope you all did too. We participated in the August 20, 2016 Payson Rodeo Parade and had four members in the band helping us entertain the crowd. They were Nobles Jim Leppert, Bob Beffel, Gene Terrell, and Bob Nelson. We were able to return to the Shrine Temple by noon to help in the CornFest on Saturday. I almost forgot to mention that we also participated in the May 21, 2016, Ceremonial at the Shrine Temple. The Temple took in about 35 new members, I think. We plan on going to the Lake Havasu Ceremonial on October 29th. We also are going to be in the Veteran’s Day Parade Nov. 11th in Tempe and also plan on being in the Glendale December 12th parade. Remember we meet on the second Tuesday of each month in the band room at 6:30 PM.

Apache Wells

Jack Roberts, Scribe

The El Zaribah Motorcycle Unit keeps growing in membership and we would like to welcome Rick Laird to our family. Rick

October starts the fall Apache Wells Luncheon and Business Meetings for the 2016 Snow Bird season. The lunch and meeting will be on the 13th in Apache Hall. The luncheon starts at 12:30 PM. A steak fry is scheduled on the 27th at the Gazebo; social hour at 5PM and cook the steaks at 6PM. Bring steak and beverage for you, and a side dish or dessert for about

eight people. A heads-up for November; The third annual Cashew Roast for the club’s cashew sales will be held at the gazebo on the 3rd. The monthly luncheon and meeting will be held on the 10th and a Shrimp Fest will be held at the gazebo on the 17th. See you there.

Drum and Bugle Corps Alto Bugle

For the first year in as long as we can remember, the Drum & Bugle Corps did not perform at the Shrine Circus. A variety of concerns and conflicts prevented us from doing so, but we were there in spirit supporting the efforts of all of the Nobles present, including the majority of our members who are active in other Units & Clubs. The Lake Havasu Ceremonial is upon us. The Drum & Bugle Corps plans to be very active during that event in October. You should see us performing multiple times throughout the weekend, but we will not know about a performance at the Banquet until we are there and see if space will allow us to perform. In spite of any of our obstacles, the entire weekend promises to be a Shrine event to remember. The Super OV of the Drum & Bugle Corps plus several other Units and Clubs will be held Friday evening, November 11, at 6:00 pm. We’d like to see a lot of guests there to join us in our celebration, especially the other Unit & Club heads. Contact Alan Dye or Jack Garrett for additional information.

Masonic Youth Club

Rick Fasano, Vice President

As we all get back into the season of Masonic work, our youth groups have been working hard all summer on a variety of projects. If you have never seen one of the Rainbow, DeMolay, or Jobs Daughters events NOW would be a great time to do so. Go to the Shrine calendar and see when the next event is planed so you may see how bright our Masonic future looks. Come to one of our Masonic Youth Club Meetings and find out how you can get involved. We meet the 3rd Wednesday of the month at 6:00 PM in the Red Fez Room. “Come to the Youth Side”
