VOLUME XXXIV

Official Publication of El Zaribah Shrine in Phoenix, Arizona

Note from your 2016 Pote...

Nobles and Ladies, 2016 has been a wonderful experience for Lady Dorothy and me. When we made the decision to run for Oriental Guide we had no idea about what may lay ahead for us and our service to the fraternity. The experiences have been made worthwhile because of the support of my Lady Dorothy. Three days after we were married we were on an airplane to Tampa and OG School. Each year we have celebrated our wedding date around an event involving the Shrine. Every city, state, Imperial Session, WSA, and El Zaribah event we have attended has become a memorable place or event for us to remember in years to come. We have made many wonderful friendships along the way. We have learned how important what we do for the Shrine and our Hospitals is to the future of both. We feel our experiences and new friendships will help us to continue to help and support both the Shrine and our Shriners Hospitals for Children in the coming years. We know that our year was made great by the members of our staff, elected and appointed Divan members and their Ladies. We thank each member and Lady who helped make everything work for the benefit of El Zaribah and the membership. Each person has made a difference. We have had to say goodbye to many great Nobles or their Ladies during the last five years. Their memory and the things we learned from them will always be with us. We thank everyone for the honor of being of service to El Zaribah and our membership. The future may be unknown to us but each of us can make a difference in the directions that El Zaribah and our membership goes. The Shrine and our Shriners Hospitals for Children need each of us to be a daily ambassador for both by sharing and showing the public who we are and what we do for them. Attend Lodge regularly, attend the Shrine and its functions, look for good men to become Masons and good Masons to become Shriners. Fun, fellowship and caring for our Shrine Children is the difference each of us can make in the future. We thank and wish every Family of El Zaribah a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. See you on the sidelines.

2016 Goals for All...

Attend Lodge regularly. Attend Shrine regularly. Look for good men to become Masons. Look for good Masons to become Shriners. We all can make a difference.

Once again, J C Reece and Randy Peters are working to get our newest Nobles introduced to our Shrine Family through our parades. New Nobles sign up for the El Zaribah WebNet Google Group for event notification. When the new Nobles are available, they contact JC and Randy. All who can help us out, are assigned to a Unit or Club for that parade/event. If you are a new Noble to El Zaribah, and would like to help us out and allow our Units and Clubs to utilize all of their parade equipment, cars, animals, etc. please contact J C Reece (Assistant Rabban) 602531-6545 or Randy Peters (Chief Rabban) 480-296-3957.

DATE/DAY

As Shriners, we are always looking for ways to fund either the Fraternal side (the building and daily operations) or the Charitable side (support for the hospital). I would like to point out some ways we are saving money, and still delivering the same high quality care to our patients. The El Zaribah’s Hospital Office, Jim and Eneida, works closely with the Los Angeles and Salt Lake Hospitals to schedule clinics and patient visits that best utilize our resources. Often, where possible, they will schedule our patients for multiple services in a single hospital visit. This saves roughly $ 450.00 in airfare, or $ 250.00 in driving costs per visit. Recently, through the concerted effort of Imp. Sir Ed Stolze and Salt Lake Hospital, we are now able to adjustments on prosthetics right here at El Zaribah. Previously, we have had to send the patient (and guardian) up to Salt Lake City for minor adjustments, resulting in extra trips and cost. Salt Lake now sends a prosthetic team member here 3 or 4 times a year to do those adjustments, resulting in a significant cost savings. This is presently a pilot program that could be expanded to meet needs elsewhere. These are just a few of the cost cutting measures that your hospital office is engaged in. Again, thank you for your support of our patients and our hospitals.

To refer a patient to Shriners Hospitals for Children, call the hospitals directly. Los Angeles 888-486-5437 Salt Lake City 800-314-4283

Hi Jim - I thought I would share this with you and some of the other Shriners and Eneida. This was an assignment for Katy’s acting class, but when she read it to me, I could hear so much more in her words. We always tell you at Shriners how important a part you have played in Katy’s life, but this spells it out in her words. She has her Instagram and has met kids from all over that deal with disabilities, illness, and bullying, and has heard many different stories. Some of the kids have been through so much, they don’t have a lot of hope or confidence. Katy found herself in that place many times before we found Shriners. As I sat in the doctor’s office myself the other day and felt like I was just another patient on the assembly line, it just reaffirmed how different the Shriners experience is. I know too, how much of a different child Katy is, because of the love and support she has gotten through the Shriners Hospital experience. While she wrote these words to share with others, I can hear where she is still encouraging herself to believe that she will be ok. :) Thanks again for all you do! Jenny Litwiller

Katy’s poem:

You’re beautiful Strong Courageous And true So don’t be so sad, upset or blue We all have bad days With dark clouds of grey But the sun will come And take that away I know you’re scared and in lots of pain But you can’t have a rainbow without a little rain Think about all the positive things And see all the joy that the next day will bring You’re worth more than gold And I know you’ve been told So believe it because it’s true There are lives being changed because of you People will try to tear you down Rip out your joy and push you around But look on the inside and you will see Your heart is bigger than their ego can be You were born with a challenge that not many face But this is your journey and you’re in the right place I want you to know this isn’t the end And I’m here to be real not to pretend So I want you to know When you look in the mirror That something will soon become quite clearer You are beautiful Strong Courageous And true Your scar is a symbol to show what you’ve been through I have only one thing that’s left to say Please keep the faith in everyday
