2016-2017 Patient Ambassadors for from Shriners Magazine, September 2016 Shriners Hospitals for Children Every year, Shriners Hospitals for Children selects two national patient ambassadors to represent the patients cared for by our health care system. The ambassadors are patients whose stories of perseverance in the face of adversity are particularly strong and can inspire others, and tangibly demonstrate the ability of Shriners Hospitals for Children to impact and change lives. The ambassadors will spend the year sharing their stories, and the story of the importance of Shriners Hospitals for Children. The 2016-2017 national patient ambassadors were introduced at the 2016 Imperial Session of Shriners International, held in Tampa, Florida, in July. Here are just a few highlights of their amazing stories. Karolina Nogues Karolina was born in May of 2000 with a significant limblength discrepancy involving her left leg. For the first five years of her life, Karolina wore a shoe lift that helped compensate for the difference. Her family searched for a better solution, and ultimately Karolina became a patient of Shriners Hospitals for Children – Shreveport, where she began a lengthening treatment that would take nine years, and require both multiple surgeries and the use of an external fixator that, over time, would lengthen her leg incrementally. She began the painful, tedious process at age 7. When the process was complete, her leg length had been increased by 7 inches. Now,

16, Karolina practices horseback riding and enjoys surfing, two activities that require the use and strength of her left leg. After high school, she hopes to apply to a Disney program for animation. Shriners Hospitals for Children is proud of our ambassadors, and of all our patients who

strive to overcome tremendous physical challenges, and become as independent and able as possible. We are pleased to help them along the way. Marius Woodward Marius was born in a small village in Romania. In 2007, when he was only 8 years old, a family altercation resulted in a terrible house fire. Marius remembers escaping the flames through one of the

windows and landing on the back of the house where a neighbor found him. Marius had severe burns over 75 percent of his body, and had lost all of his fingers and his nose. The fire had also taken his parents; his siblings were spared, possibly only because they were not at home when the incident occurred. . Marius spent 8 months at a hospital in Romania, where he met two students from Brigham Young University, Ashley Ludlow and Jessica Free, who were participating in a special program and visited the hospital. Realizing that the child would not receive all the care he needed in Romania, the girls enlisted their families’ assistance to bring Marius to the U.S. Eventually, Marius was adopted by Ashley’s family – the Woodwards – and began treatment at Shriners Hospitals for Children – Los Angeles, where he underwent many surgeries, including a multiple toe-to-hand transfer, which would allow him to be much more independent. Marius is believed to be the first in the world to have a transfer of this type involving six toes. Today, Marius is an active 17-year old high school student who, despite having only two toes and six new fingers, is able to play football and soccer; his goal is to become a motivational speaker and a model, to demonstrate that his scars make him who he is and to encourage acceptance, despite outward appearance.

DIVAN NEWS

Note from the Pote...

Nobles and Ladies, November is a month for thanksgivings and to remember those who have gone before us. As a veteran of the Vietnam era I cherish those I knew who paid the ultimate sacrifice for our Country. Today I am very thankful for having known Noble Jerry Sanford who passed on October 14, 2016. A Noble who looked every day for what he could do for the Shrine, his Clubs and Units, Shriners Hospitals for Children and all the kids he knew and loved. As Nobles we each should ask ourselves daily, to paraphrase John F Kennedy, “Ask not what the Shriners can do for me but ask what can I do for the Shrine and their cause.”

Lady Dorothy and I thank each and every Noble and Lady who attended the many events that were held in October around our great State. Your participation and encouragement mean a lot to every member of El Zaribah Shriners. It is not the building in which we hold events and meetings that makes El Zaribah a great Shrine organization, it is the 1300 plus Nobles who belong to El Zaribah and their families that make us great. Each and every one of us has the ability to sell our fraternity and the outstanding work we do. Shriners Hospitals for Children are why WE PUT CHILDREN FIRST at El Zaribah. You as a Noble have the honor of showing those with whom you associate what it means to be a Mason and a Shriner and explain to them what and why we do the great

things to help our kids and have fun doing it. You do make a difference to everyone you meet with all the positives that you present that show how great we are. Parades, OVs or official visitations, Club and Unit leadership elections, Chief Rabban night (a must for all Nobles to attend), family gatherings for the coming holidays and being thankful for all that God and Life have blessed you with will make a great November to remember. Remember to attend Lodge regularly, look for good Men to become Masons and good Masons to become Shriners. Fraternally, George WE PUT CHILDREN FIRST

Once again, J C Reece and Randy Peters are working to get our newest Nobles introduced to our Shrine Family through our parades. New Nobles sign up for the El Zaribah WebNet Google Group for event notification. When the new Nobles are available, they contact JC and Randy. HOSPITAL NEWS We have a very good report on our construction project. Everything is on schedule and very close to budget. We have an anticipated completion date of January 30, 2017, at which time will begin the lengthy process of moving and preparation. It is a very long and involved process with a lot of moving details and adjustments to be made. Fortunately, we have an excellent staff in place to coordinate a project of this size. As a part of this move, we have already moved all of our in-patient surgeries to Huntington Medical to comply with all agreements. We are working with our Board of Trustees to host a meeting at the new facility in April of 2017. We have had some very good recognition for some of our medical staff recently and we are proud of the accomplishments. Dr. Bob Cho, Chief of Staff, has recently been recognized as a Top Doc in the August, 2016 issue of the Pasadena Magazine. Dr. McGee had the honor of organizing a cleft lip and palate clinic for our surgeons in the Shrine Hospital system. It was held at our LA facility and received very favorable reviews. As a part of the team, Dr. McGee was joined by Dr. Swanson in the work and they have submitted 14 abstracts that have been accepted for the National Cleft Lip and Palate Conference in 2017. This will give them 14 opportunities to appear in front of a large number of doctors, exemplifying the work that we do within our organization. From a performance standpoint, we have made tremendous strides in the filling of the medical positions, which has allowed us to increase our activity levels. Our patient levels are increasing and we have had a focus on building relations within our new location. As a result, we are seeing an increase in our referrals from other medical providers including our partner, Huntington Medical. We owe a lot of thanks to our staff that is working hard on building these relationships. Along with our increase in patients, we are also seeing more patients in our outpatient clinics, along with increases in our occupation and physical therapy departments. It is a very positive and exciting environment right now. A thanks to all of our staff for steering us in a good direction and having us on the road for more success in the future. Thanks to all of you for your support and we really do “Put Children First”. Phil Houghton, LA Hospital Board of Governors

MORE DIVAN NEWS

Ramblings from the Chief Rabban...

Greetings! When the c a l e n d a r shows that it’s officially fall, things are in full swing at El Zaribah. The Potentate and Divan are busy with OVs, parades, and day to day Temple operations. However, we’re never too busy for our Nobility. So if you have any questions, concerns, or needs, please feel free to contact any of the Divan for assistance. November will be a jam packed month with OVs and parades. Only a couple of Stated Meetings left in the year, so please make it a point to attend. Remember, the Potentate may not be at the November Stated Meeting, so who knows what might happen! December 14’s Stated Meeting is our annual election of Temple Officers! Check the Arabian Tales and/ or the El-Zaribah.org website to find out dates and times for parades, Christmas parties, and OVs. There will be a meeting/ presentation coming soon about the El Zaribah trip to New Orleans in October of 2017. Terry Hartnett, the Group Travel Specialist from Adventure Travel, will be on hand to give a brief presentation of the trip, and to answer any questions. Cindy and I are really looking forward to spending a week in the Big Easy with as many Nobles, Ladies, friends, and family we can get there! Our Ceremonial Ritualistic Divan Team members do a Fantastic job at all of our Ceremonials. Although, they are only seen a couple of times a year, this is one of El Zaribah’s most elite groups. We also put on one of the most impressive presentations in all of Shrinedom with our Arch Degree. Most of the Imperial Divan uses El Zaribah’s Arch Degree as the example to see when they are asked about this particular degree. Both of these teams are always looking for new members. There are times when cast members can’t be at a Ceremonial, and they

need substitutes. It is a very rewarding experience being part of one, or both of these Teams. If you’d like to become part of the Ceremonial/Arch Degree Team, contact myself, or any Divan member and we will get you “hooked up”. Remember, we can’t make new Nobles without our Ritualistic Team. Looking forward to a fun and productive rest of 2016. El Zaribah is YOUR Temple, so please come out and support it. Fraternally, Just Randy

UNIT and CLUB REPORTS Culinary Unitby,

Ken Conner,

Scribe until relieved Hello Nobles! Well the holiday season is almost upon us and the thought of sugar plums are dancing in Mike Fenno’s head. Not much else to interfere with there! Kind of like this article, you may come away with no idea of what this article was about, but that is what you get when you have writer like me. Just a space filler in the Tales. We have gained a new member since last writing though, Dave Smith’s future son-in-law has joined our ranks, I hope to have his name down soon. By the time we get him trained he may have changed his mind. The stress of having to handle steaming hot beans and gravy can be mind-blowing. The last Noble that joined us only paid his $20 dues and we never saw him again after the Christmas party. I just can’t seem to find the time to enter his info in the records, being so overworked. I just keep telling myself that I can’t afford to give up such a high paying position. Even though Lenny is very generous with the pay raises and bonuses. Still hard to make it on nothing. I don’t even get an empty pay envelope! By the time you read this, the election should be over and we will know which crook is to be guiding our country for the next four years. Left or right it will take someone with something off balance mentally to even want the stress of the job. I can barely handle my job of writing this dribble once a month. Anyway I am still trying to keep my apron and shoes clean but my choral group is still wondering if I am coming back from the break I took a few years ago. Remember to stay back from the line and be on guard for splashing beans! Happy Turkey Day!!!

Legion of Honor by, Chris

Hagenian, PP Are you a Veteran? The LEGION OF HONOR NEEDS YOU!! A big thank you to all members who participated in events over the summer; lots were traveling but we had good participation at the events with some outstanding dedication from our members. The Legion of Honor is comprised of military veterans from all branches of service, it’s an honor to belong to the Legion of Honor. If you are a new Noble or an existing Noble please come and visit (meeting dates listed on El Zaribah website) with the Legion of Honor to find out how to serve El Zaribah and honor your Country, State, Branch, and Shrine.

Motorcycle Unit

Greetings from the Highway, Ten road warriors from the Motorcycle Unit rode to Havasu for the ceremonial, festivities and parade, it was reported that we performed flawlessly, with well, maybe a few exceptions.

We have sold nearly all of the rifle raffle tickets and the drawing will be held this month. I am happy to say at our October Unit meeting we voted in five new riding members to our ever growing unit. We will have a group photo of these happy motorcyclists in the next issue.

At the October stated meeting Brother Jerry Weiers, (Mayor of Glendale) presented a check to Illustrious Sir George in the amount $52,846.75 as a result of the Bowling Palooza our annual fund raiser. We could not have done this without the support of Brother Jerry Weiers, Mick Degn, the Motorcycle Unit, Shriners, ladies, and family members who showed up to volunteer. Next on our agenda is a CCW permit class to be held on Sunday December 18th

at the Shrine Center. This is a four-hour class and starts at 8:00 AM. The cost of the class is $50 and you will also need to pay a permit fee of $60 to DPS for the permit. If you have a firearm or an interest in firearms this class is worth taking. It will answer a lot of questions and gives you the basic skills you need. The class is limited to 50 students and pre-registration is recommended. Contact Mike Ozee or Frank Vass to reserve your seat. Check out the flyer for details regarding this event We hope to see everyone in Tempe, Anthem, and Winslow at the parades. Talk to any Officer or member if you would like more information about the Motorcycle Unit or email Mike Ozee mjozee@q.com or Bob Hicklin bobhicklin@gmail.com

Mounted Patrol

Howdy Y’all from all of us in the Mounted Patrol. As the year winds down it seems the events become more often. By now our fall ride at the beautiful EZ Ranch will be over. It looked like we were going to have a good crowd and a lot of fun. We are also looking into the possibility of recreating our old Mounted Patrol breakfast we used to have. We will get the word out as soon as the date had been approved and hope you can attend. It was always a great social hour for guys and gals alike. Hope you can make it when it happens. Our Christmas dinner and OV is set for Dec. 17. Drop in and say hi if you like. As soon as we set the dates for the spring ride we will publish same and hope you can make it. Until we meet again, we all wish everyone a wonderful rest of the year and very happy holidays, a blessed Thanksgiving and from all of us to all of you, “A very Merry Christmas”

Temple Guard: Always Vigilant, Heavily Fortified A reminder, The Temple Guard Meets on the Third Tuesday of the month; easy to remember because it is the Tuesday after the Stated Meeting. We have an E-Board at 5:30, Come Join us for a Social Hour and dinner at 6:00, and the business. meeting at 6:30. UNIT and CLUB REPORTS once again, by loading Tents and Coolers and set up and knock down. His work has been indispensable to the Temple Guard and Shriners in general. A special thanks to others who helped out: Chuck Richard’s Strategic planning and support, tent assembly and knock down, that new Shriner and Motorcycle Unit guy, Rick Laird, who helped out at the hot grill on Saturday; and Lady Cindy Peters, who on very short notice graciously left important stuff to help guard the tigers; and especially Doc Hayes, who gave up 2 days to watch over the tigers. Due to Doc’s observant eye, no tigers were abducted and our record remains unblemished. Thanks to all the Ladies and others who gave their time. The Lake Havasu parade and Ceremonial is just behind us. Congratulations to all the new Nobles; come get to know us. Also thanks to the many Temple Guard members who filled roles in other units and clubs and gave generously of their time. Many adults and children had a time they will always remember due to your efforts. Temple Guard is a Unit, and as such expected to participate in Parades. If you would like to be in a parade, if you are not in a parade unit and would like to be, contact us and we will help find a spot for you. Temple Guard has the Formula 1 Go carts. New Nobles in particular, keep early April open (Sun April 2nd) for the Annual Temple Guard Picnic and Hillbilly Degree. Little Known facts: Temple Guard is one of the oldest units at the Shrine and we have been honored, that all Past Potentates are Temple Guard members; are you? The Hospital outreach clinics are where Doctors from LA and Salt Lake City Shrine Hospitals come and review patients. Temple Guard Members are always present to help. Erv and Walt

can tell you much more; plan on it when you can. Many hands make light work. No one is asking that you do it all, we simply ask that you step up and do what you can; while having fun doing it.

Apache Wells by, Jack Roberts,

Club Scribe November starts the season for lots of activity at the Apache Wells Shrine Club. The Cashew Roast to raise funds for the club operation will be held at 8 AM on the 3rd at the Gazebo. Club, members please help. The luncheon and business meeting will be held on the 10th. A Shrimp Fest is scheduled for the 17th at the Apache Wells Gazebo and Navajo Room. Everyone is invited: come and enjoy. As a heads up for December: The luncheon and business meeting will be held on the 8th. The election of the 2017 officers will be conducted .at this meeting.

Drum & Bugle Corps

by,

Alto Bugle A large welcome goes out to the Nobles initiated at the Lake Havasu Ceremonial. We hope that you enjoyed yourselves and we encourage you to become an active Shriner by getting involved with a Unit or Club. The Drum & Bugle Corps was active during the weekend. We performed multiple times throughout, including around the Hospitality area and at the Ladies Luncheon. As you can tell, we have a fun time performing, and never take ourselves too seriously. The Super OV of the Drum & Bugle Corps plus 13 other Units and Clubs will be held Friday evening, November 11, at 6:00 for social hour and 7:00 for dinner. Anyone interested may attend, and we especially encourage other Unit and Club Heads to attend to represent your group. Contact Alan Dye or any of the heads

of the Units and Clubs participating for information on how to get your tickets. The Drum & Bugle Corps is always looking for new members to beat a drum or blow a horn with us. If any new Nobles from our Havasu class are so inclined, stop by and meet us. We meet every Tuesday evening in the Band Room at 5:30 pm. You do not need to be a musician to play with us; we’ll teach you all you need to know. We always have a cool one on ice and some great snacks after our practices that you can enjoy with us. See you then!

Provost Club

Greetings Provost-men After a slow summer we are starting to get back into the groove with jobs in September and October. Thanks to those who helped with the Circus and the 11th hour work. We need to ask our members again to be able to help at a moment’s notice. We have been fortunate to get help from the Temple Guard and it looks like we will need resort to asking for help more in the future as our membership is dropping fast due to age, sickness, and people just not able to work and those resigning. Please check with our new Nobles to see if they wish to join the Provost Club, as we are looking forward to a new year with several more rentals, so it is important to recruit, recruit, recruit. Our cart is being serviced for use in future rentals as this was not done over the Summer. Fortunately, we were able to keep it indoors during the heat. Again, any new members to the Shrine who are interested in helping with security please come out to one of our meetings on the 2nd Thursday for dinner at 5:30 and meeting at 6:30 in the Computer Room or contact Captain Jim Leppert at 623-5169363 or email him at chijimbo14@q.com.

LADIES ORGANIZATIONS Daughters of the Nile Linda Sayre, Queen Qadesh Temple No 35

Qadesh Temple No 35 extends a Happy Thanksgiving to all our Shrine family. We are so very grateful for all you do to support our children in your Shriners Hospitals. We had our Ceremonial on October 10th. We are so excited to get better acquainted with our new members! Compliments go out to the officers for a beautiful Ceremonial. Our fall fundraiser, “Cowgirl Luncheon” on October 15 in the Fiesta Room went well and we certainly appreciated everyone’s support. Ladies, please join us on Sunday, November 6, 2016 at 2 PM in the Fiesta Room at El Zaribah for an informational social. Light refreshments will be served.

We want you to know all about the Daughters of the Nile. Our Junior Past Queen, Jeannie Patterson is Chairman this year. Please call her at 602-300-5539, if you are interested in attending and she will send you an invitation with all the information. November is a special month because it reminds us what is important: giving thanks. It is also the time of the year we count our many blessings and we truly are blessed to be able to help the children in our Shriners Hospitals.

LOSNA

Karen MacDougall, High Priestess Sphinx Court No. 65 Arizona is beautiful in the fall, so I hope you are getting out to enjoy it. It was nice

meeting some of the wives of the new Nobles of El Zaribah at Lake Havasu in October. I attended the Ladies luncheon with Sphinx Court’s Princess, Iris Colbert. We hope that all of you will be interested in finding out more about the Ladies Oriental Shrine of North America and how Sphinx Court helps the Shrine Kids. Call me any time at 623-337-3226. The holidays are upon us already! Sphinx Patrol and our Clown unit will be attending the Junior Parada Parade in Florence on November 26th. It’s a fun time for all. December will be filled with Holiday Parties and on December 15th Sphinx Court will have our Official Visit by the Grand High Priestess, Lady Diana Schmitz. I hope the Divan will be able to join us for dinner that night. More information will be coming your way. Enjoy a wonderful Thanksgiving with family and friends!

OUT AND ABOUT

Why T.A.P.S. is Played - Printed in the Scottish Rite Magazine September/October, 2016 edition

Bro. John Moore, 32” Long Beach Scottish Rite Long Beach, CA We in the United States have all heard the haunting song, “Taps.” But, do you know the story behind the song? Reportedly, it all began in 1862 during the Civil War, when Union Army Captain Robert Ellicombe was with his men near Harrison’s Landing in Virginia. The Confederate Army was on the other side of the narrow strip of land. During the night, Captain Ellicombe heard the moans of a soldier who lay severely wounded on the field. Not knowing if it was a Union or Confederate soldier, the Captain decided to risk his life and bring the stricken man back for medical attention. Crawling on his stomach through the gunfire, the Captain reached the stricken soldier and began pulling him toward his encampment. When the Captain finally reached his own lines, he discovered it was actually a

Confederate soldier. but the soldier was dead. The Captain lit a lantern and suddenly caught his breath and went numb with shock. In the dim light, he saw the face of the soldier. It was his own son. The boy had been studying music in the South when the war broke out. Without telling his father. the boy enlisted in the Confederate Army. The following morning, heartbroken, the father asked permission of his superiors to give his son a full military burial, despite his enemy status. His request was only partially granted.

Concealed Weapons Permit Class

The Captain had asked if he could have a group of Army band members play a funeral dirge for his son at the funeral. The request was turned down since the soldier was a Confederate. But, out of respect for the father, they did say they could give him only one musician. The Captain chose a bugler. He asked the bugler to play a series of musical notes he had found on a piece of paper in the pocket of the dead youth’s uniform. This wish was granted. The haunting melody, we now know as “Taps” used at military funerals was born. The words are: Day is done, gone the sun, From the lake, from the hills, from the sky; All is well, safely rest, God is nigh. Fading light, dims the sight, And a star gems the sky, gleaming bright. From afar, drawing nigh, falls the night. Sun has set, shadows come, Time has fled, Scouts must go to their beds Always true to the promise that they made. While the light fades from sight, And the stars gleaming rays softly send, To thy hands we our souls, Lord, commend.

I too have felt chills while listening to “Taps”, but I have never seen all the words to the song until now. I didn’t even know there was more than one verse. I also never knew the story behind the song and I didn’t know if you had either, so I thought I would pass it along. I now have an even deeper respect for the song than I did before. Remember those lost and harmed while serving their country and also those presently serving in the Armed Forces.
