Official Publication of El Zaribah Shrine in Phoenix, Arizona

2017 - Building Dreams, One Child at a Time It is a real honor to have been given the trust and support by our Nobles to serve as Potentate of the El Zaribah Shriners for 2017. This year, like most, will find our Shrine Center very active in keeping El Zaribah one of the premier Shrine Centers in the world. The units, clubs, and ladies that are part of El Zaribah work very hard to maintain the level of professionalism we are known for, in taking care of our hospitals, as well as keeping true to our Shriners moto, “Fun, Fraternity, Philanthropy!”

This coming year we will face some challenges with our El Zaribah Temple and Shrine Family. We must all make membership our top priority! It seems to be a struggle getting and keeping new Shriners into our Fraternity, but we must continue working on this. I believe showing all the great Masons in our jurisdiction how much fun and fellowship we have is the key. If they see us having the good times that we have, they will follow. As our Membership Chairman says, “Selling the Shrine is easy…it sells itself!” This year we will be doing some new programs, participating in some new parades, some new ideas for Stated Meetings, and maybe some other surprises. Lady Cindy and I are very

excited about the upcoming year, and want you to be, also. Let’s have some Fun! ‘Building Dreams, One Child at a Time’ is the theme for 2017. A dream is the vehicle by which your life is driven. We have built, delivered, and watched thousands of children’s dreams come true for almost a century now. And with your support and hard work, we will maintain the road that El Zaribah is on for our continued success…now and in the future. Yours in Faith, Randy Peters Potentate 2017

The Dream Catcher...

There was a time in Anishinaabe (Odawa, Ojibwa, Potawatomi Nations) history when the people were being tormented by nightmares. The elders and “medicine people” tried to solve this problem. One elder had a vision of a spider’s web in a hoop with a feather and bead attached that would catch the bad dreams while letting good dreams pass through. They went to work and fashioned the dream catcher. The dream catcher is hung above a sleeping area in a place where the morning light can hit it. When bad dreams come, they do not know the way through the web and get caught in the webbing where the first light of day causes them to melt away and perish. The good dreams knowing the way, go through the center of the web and slide down the feather to the sleeper below. In the Center of our Dream Catcher is The Eagle Dancer Kachina…It represents Strength and Power, and can carry a person’s dreams up to heaven. Kwahu, the Eagle Kachina is treated as an honored guest among the Hopi, who gives him presents like they do their children. This year we are concentrating on making children’s dreams come true. Millions of children over the past 95 years have been able to overcome physical obstacles that they were only able to dream about before finding Shriners Hospitals for Children. God Bless Shriners International, Shriners Hospitals for Children, and may we continue to make all of our Shrine Children’s Dreams Come True!

MEMBERSHIP NEWS to do with Membership? Is there something I can do to increase the number of Nobles who are paying their dues on a timely basis? • Do I know of someone out there that I think would make a good Shrine Mason, even if he isn’t already a Mason? •How can I get him in? •Are there any tools that I can use or information that I can pass on to him to show what it is to be a Shriner. •Can I invite him to join us for dinner one night before our stated meeting and introduce him to some of

How Do You View Our Membership Situation? Is It a Problem or an Opportunity? For one, I believe that all of us look forward to coming to the Shrine to enjoy the company of our very good friends, our fellow members. But do we ever think about where we get new members or how and why we lose some to demits or NPD? Why should that bother me? I don’t have to worry about it. SOMEONE ELSE is always there to take care of those problems. All I have to do is show up and have fun! No worry! My Brothers, we ALL must concern ourselves with the state of our membership: • What are our numbers, how are they trending... up or down • If our membership is declining, •Why? Why are fewer of our members coming to the stated meetings •Why are my Brother Nobles demitting? Have we asked them why they stopped coming, what it would take to get them to come back? •Have we communicated with our Brother Nobles who we haven’t seen in some time? Are they OK? Do they need my help? • What can I do personally to help with these declining numbers? • The Treasurer keeps telling us that our financial situation is getting worse, but what does that have

my buddies? The health of our membership should be one of the top-most concerns of every one of us. It is up to each and every one of us to take a part in working to improve our membership numbers. Membership is a 24/7/365 day a year issue that is vital to all of us. The GOOD news is that our overall numbers improved somewhat this past year. We started the year with 1183 members and ended with 1212….a net gain of 29 members. We restored 28 of our Brother Nobles who had previously demitted or

been suspended for NPD. That’s good! But we lost 55 to the Black Camel, 14 to demits and we suspended 34 for failing to pay their 2016 dues on time. That is not so good. There is nothing we can do when the Supreme Architect calls our Brothers home to join Him in heaven, but we can work on the losses we suffered from demits and NPDs. We need you help with these last two items. We must all work together to stop the continual loss of members year to year and concern ourselves with growing our numbers each year if we want our Shrine to be there for our children and our children’s children for years to come. Volunteer to work with the Membership Committee. Noble Brother Darrell “Popo” Mandrell or Bill Garrard will be glad to have your assistance. The Membership Development team at Imperial has developed some fantastic tools to assist us in our endeavors to bring in and keep new members. We will be sharing more of this in the months to come. I will leave you with this: Membership is/ should be the concern of each and every one of us, every day, every week……all of the time. Rather than making this a tiresome toil, let’s look at it as an opportunity to grow and have more fun. Come join the fun. OUT AND ABOUT Why We Play The Shriners Golf Classic! by, Tom Calvin, Executive Director, Shriners Golf Classic I was recently attending a tournament at Longbow Golf Club and was wearing my Shriners Hospitals for Children Open jacket at the time. I was approached by a young man who works at the course who told me he would love to attend the Open and would just do anything to get there. It was easy to see how adamant he was and I asked, “Why does this mean so much to you?” He simply raised his hands for me to see and said, “I’ve been a patient of Shriners Hospitals since I was in the 2nd Grade”. As you can imagine, I had to clear the lump from my throat before I told him that we would appreciate it if he would participate in the 20th Anniversary Shriners Golf Classic. Just recently, I received this letter from him. Tom, First, I want to express more gratitude than I could ever possibly put in words to be given the opportunity you and every person in the Shriners Organization has given me throughout my life. Being one of the many people that Shriners Hospital has blessed, I can easily and whole heartedly say that without the help and generosity, my life would be very different from what it is today. I am also very thankful that it is not different because I love my life! I was born on February 8th, 1995 in Ft. Collins, Colorado with Amniotic Band Syndrome that effected my hands, a polycystic kidney (she didn’t work), and two clubbed feet. The failed kidney was removed when I was 3 months old and the double hand/foot surgery followed very shortly after. I was basically a turtle without a shell for the first 6 months of my life being casted on all four limbs. Once I got past all of this, I had a fairly normal childhood. There was hardly anything I wasn’t able to do. Some things I just had to do differently like open a pop can with a spoon or set my toothbrush on the counter to put toothpaste on the brush, which I even still do today but that’s beside the point I was eight years old when I was introduced to the Shriners and my EXCELLENT hand surgeon Doug Hutchinson. Hutch has performed eight hand surgeries for me

and the golf game tends to get a little bit better with each operation. I owe such an unpayable amount of gratitude to the surgery center in Salt Lake City for enhancing my life in so many more ways than just the surgeries themselves. From Hutch, to my care coordinator Kristine Ferguson, to every nurse that took care of me while grouchy after surgery, I owe so, so, so much I got interested in golf when I was about 5. My family lived in an apartment with a park adjacent to the complex and I was in awe the first time I saw one of my adult neighbors hitting wedge shots. Instantly I was more than hooked. After breaking more plastic balls and clubs than you could count, my parents bought a set of junior clubs for me when I was 8. I don’t know why they decided to let an 8-year-old take divots around the entire place but looking back I’m thankful they did! My competitive golf started later than a lot of juniors which was during my sophomore year of high school at Eaton High School in Eaton, Colorado. I lettered my first year of golf with a stroke average of about 76. My junior and senior years were slightly better with a stroke average of about 75 lettering both years as well My college golf career was a lot more exciting for me however. I got a partial scholarship my freshman year to play for Northeastern Junior College in Sterling, Colorado. I had three individual wins while at Northeastern one of which being the Region 9 Regional Tournament with a three-round total of 218 which included a then career low best tournament round of 66. I earned a trip to the NJCAA D2 National Championship at Swan Lake Resort. My sophomore year I transferred to Trinidad State Junior College in Trinidad, Colorado. My year there has been my most accomplished year of golf. My first semester there I claimed a scoring average of 69.2 with 3 more individual wins. That was good enough at the time to be ranked in the top 30 in the nation for D1 Junior College. Over Christmas break that year Hutch performed my final surgery. It has been my most major surgery releasing my pinky/ring finger from my index finger on my right hand. This one took me a bit longer to recover from. I very literally had to learn how to grip the golf club all over again. I was fortunate that following semester to claim one more individual win as well as claim the Region 9 Player of the Year winning the region a second year in a row. I received a half ride to play for the University of Wisconsin at Parkside my

junior year. Sadly, after an unfortunate string of events I came home not finishing my year at Parkside. Although that’s not my favorite part of the story, it is a part nonetheless Everything happens for a reason. The birth defects, the surgeries, the adversity, everything has led me to be where I am and I wouldn’t trade it for the world. Currently I am living in Chandler, AZ with a handicap at about +4 trying to get my name out there, as well and play well in some events that really matter. The Shriners Hospital for Children Professional Golf Events on the Cactus Tour, the PGA Tour, and if there are any other tours that I do not know about yet will still be under my umbrella of events I passionately would love to be a staple of in the future. I am more than grateful to be given this what could be a once in a lifetime opportunity and I will do anything to make the absolute most of it! Thank you so much for everything already Tom!! Justin Carlock To quote Imperial Sir Ed Stolze, because we as Shriners are all volunteers, it is comments and letters like this that are our paycheck. Please take time to meet Justin at the “Bash Before the Clash” or the Shriners Golf Classic Pro Am. UNIT and CLUB REPORTS Motorcycle Unit

by, Bob Hicklin First, Happy New Year 2017, and second a big thank you to all the Unit members and Shrine members who helped with our recent activities. Starting with past President and now Divan member Dana Dobson who had his 8th annual Toy drive at Stapley Junior High in Mesa on Nov 22nd. His Jr High School collects and donates thousands of dollars and buys toys for, Sunshine Acres children’s home and the El Zaribah kids Christmas party. Our Motorcycle Unit and others put on a small parade for the students who worked so hard to make this happen. In December, we sponsored a CCW Permit Class at the Shrine with all the proceeds going to the general fund. Thanks to instructors Allen Nichols and Kurt Stancl from Bear Arms Firearms who donated their time and to the 38 Men and Women who attended the class. The Glendale Parade was a great one with the most riders we have had in attendance

for the event. Then on to the Fiesta Bowl parade on a cloudy New Year’s Day morning, but we were lucky and missed the downpour. The next day was our annual New Year ride and was rained out. That did not shut us down however and we continued with the tradition by having breakfast in the Red Fez room that morning. The meal was prepared by none other than Oriental Guide and good friend Keith Seplak and his wife Theresa. Also, say Hello to our newly elected Officers for the New Year--- Mike Ozee, President, Bob Hicklin VP, Robert “Griff” Griffin, Secretary, Jim Reid, Treasurer and Frank Vass, Parade Captain. Remember we meet the Thursday after the Stated Meeting in the Motorcycle Room, dinner 6PM, meeting at 7. You don’t need to own a Motorcycle to join our band of brothers.

Oriental Band

by, Oriental Band Scribe Happy New Year. I hope you had a good holiday and a happy

new year. The Oriental Band is growing again. We have some new band members now and we are very happy about this. Welcome to Bob Nelson and James Leppert. We also are working on a couple of associate members too. We all attended the Glendale Christmas Parade and the Fiesta Bowl Parade in downtown Phoenix. We took the band float and had six players in the band. We had a great parade and a good time was had by all. We have put a new coat of red paint on the float, and it is nice to look at by everybody. We plan on going to a lot of parades this year; come and join us to enjoy a good time. We meet every second Tuesday evening in the Temple Band Room, or the Red Fez Room about 6:30PM.

Temple Guard

by, William Hedrix We opened the year with the Joint OV, and are looking forward to the Bash before the Ball and

Potentates Ball. We want to encourage anyone who has not yet received the Hillbilly Degree, to mark your calendar, and join the Temple Guard and the Hillbilly Clan at our annual Temple Guard Picnic at El Dorado Park in Scottsdale, Sunday April 2nd. Little Known facts: Temple Guard is one of the Oldest units at the Shrine and all Past Potentates are Temple Guard members; are you? As a reminder, The Temple Guard Meets on the Third Tuesday of the month; easy to remember because it is the Tuesday after the Stated Meeting. We have an E-Board meeting at 5:30, Social time and Dinner at 6:00, and a Business. Meeting at 6:30. Temple Guard is a Unit, and as such participates in Parades. Check the Parade Schedule. Hope to see you there. No one is asking that you do it all, we simply ask that you step up and do what you can; while having fun doing it. Temple Guard: Always Vigilant and Heavily Fortified.

Apache Wells SC

by, Jack Roberts, Club Scribe January, 2017, brings the newly elected officers to the club Management. President, Noble Buddy Vosler; First Vice President, Noble Joseph Dunn; Second Vice President, Noble Cort Phalp; Treasurer, Noble James Filkins; Secretary, Noble Patrick Duffy; and Chaplain: Past Potentate Gary Preston. The January luncheon and business meeting will be on the 12th; 12:30 PM social and 1 PM lunch in Apache Wells Country Club. The President’s Ball and the El Zaribah Potentate’s Official Visit will be held at Apache Wells Country Club on the 14th: the oasis starts at 5PM and dinner at 6 PM. We will have a great dinner and dance music till 10 PM. We hope to see all club Nobles there to welcome the Potentate, the Divan, and the new officers to their offices. As a heads-up, the February club meeting and luncheon will be on 4th in the Country Club. The annual Spring Golf Tournament will be on February 19th with a 1PM shotgun start. It is for all golfers, not just Shriners. Come on out and play. A Salmon feed will be held at the Gazebo and Navaho room on the 23th. The net proceeds for both events go to help transport children and family members to the Shriners Hospitals for Children®.

Linda Sayre, Queen Qadesh Temple No 35 Happy New Year! I hope you and your family had a wonderful Christmas and Hanukkah. May joy and peace be with you in the New Year! We had a wonderful Ceremonial in October. Congratulations to the officers for their outstanding work. A big welcome to our new princesses Tori Loll, Jackie Miller, Shirley Brooks and Elizabeth “Bizzy” Herbolsheimer. Please meet and greet them when you have the opportunity. Payson Nile Club, Sun City Nile Club, and Mesa Nile Club’s Official Visits were outstanding and the abundance of sewing items and gift cards were especially appreciated for our children in our designated Shriners Hospitals. Qadesh Temple is looking forward to the Official Visit of Her Supreme Majesty, Cathy Carol Rose, on February 7, 2017. This is such a special day for Qadesh. We wish you many rewarding blessings for a glorious and productive 2017! We are proud to support our El Zaribah Shriners and appreciate all you do for the children. It is our privilege and pleasure that Qadesh Temple No 35, Daughters of the Nile, be allowed to assist you in your work.

LOSNA

Karen MacDougall, High Priestess Sphinx Court No. 65 Congratulations to Illustrious Sir Randy Peters and Lady Cindy Peters! The Ladies of Sphinx Court and I wish you a fun and successful year! December was a crazy month for us, as we welcomed our Grand High Priestess, Lady Diana Schmitz, for her Official Visit to Sphinx Court #65. We had a lot of fun and a great meeting. All the Unit Christmas parties were full of great food and friends. We also had a very successful Gift Wrapping fundraiser despite the wet weather. Coming up is our “Be My Valentine” Fashion Show and Luncheon or Saturday, February 4th. We have New Image Fashions coming out to fill the Shrine Auditorium with new resort and casual wear for sale. Sales start at 10:00AM and the Luncheon and Fashion Show will start at noon. Be sure to attend! Men are welcome and encouraged to attend with your Valentine. We have some help this year from some of our Nobles and the Fashion “SHOW” will be SPECTACULAR!! Don’t miss it! Tickets are available for $35/person and we do need your reservation before 1/30/17. Call me at 623873-7988 for more details and reservations! Don’t Miss Out!!
