DIVAN NEWS

Note from the Pote...

Nobles and Ladies, August is here and we are having a great summer. With the Payson Rodeo Parade and our CornFest fast approaching many things are happening to make them full of fun and fellowship. Many of our new Nobles from the May Ceremonial honoring Ill Sir Monty Fox will be attending the CornFest as part of their learning about the Shrine and what El Zaribah does. Our annual Shrine Circus is scheduled for September 9, 10, 11, 2016 at WestWorld. There are flyers and other information in this issue of the Arabian Tales. The El-Zaribah.org site also has other valuable information about events.

Nobles, we are doing great at raising funds for our Hospital Transportation funds for transporting the Children we sponsor at Shriners Hospitals for Children. We ask that each member take a serious look at what we may be able to do as individuals and as a Club or Unit member to help raise funds to support the El Zaribah operations in general. We are doing everything possible to increase rentals of the El Zaribah Convention Center, and we need support to raise funds necessary for the day to day operations of our building. We ask that each member get involved in a Club or Unit effort to raise funds for the general operations. We look forward to seeing everyone at upcoming events and returning to our

meeting schedule in September. We have many couples leaving for an Alaskan Cruise on August 27 to September 3, 2016. We have Nobles and Ladies, Family and Friends traveling with Lady Dorothy and me. We thank them and we thank our El Zaribah nobility for the honor and pleasure to be of service to the Shrine and all our members. WE PUT CHILDREN FIRST

2016 Goals for All...

Attend Lodge regularly. Attend Shrine regularly. Look for good men to become Masons. Look for good Masons to become Shriners. We all can make a difference.

My Lady Jackie and I traveled to the Shriners International Imperial Session by air this summer. We flew on Southwest Airlines and I made it a point to thank the crews for their continuing support in helping transport our patients. I was amazed by how many knew of Shriners Hospitals for Children, but they were not aware that their employer was so generous in supporting us. Each year Southwest Airlines donates flights to Shriners Hospitals for Children to transport patients and a family member to and from our hospitals. We at El Zaribah have used this service for years. This year alone we have received 20 EPasses from Southwest Airlines to transport our patients and family members. We spend somewhere between $15,000 and $20,000 per month in transportation costs. The average cost of a round trip ticket is approximately $500, thus 20 EPasses is equivalent to Southwest Airlines donating approximately $10,000 to our Hospital Patient Transportation Fund. This is very significant. Southwest Airlines also works very closely with us when we have to make changes to flights due to changes in surgery schedules, etc. Every time you fly on Southwest Airlines, make sure you thank them for the wonderful support they give to Shriners Hospitals for Children. Their generosity makes it possible for us to support more children.

UNIT and CLUB REPORTS Clown Unit, Bill “U-Hoo” Enloe

During the first week of June many Masons in Arizona were present to attend the 134th Grand communication in Tucson. This time seemed more special because our own clowns were representatives to the Grand Lodge of Arizona. Worshipful Brother Bill “U-Hoo” Enloe and Brother JJ “Hopeful” Jennings were representing Hunter Paradise Lodge in receiving its second consecutive Master Architect Award, which is the highest honor a Lodge can receive in Arizona. Hunters Paradise Lodge saw its first DDGM in WB Gerry “NotSo” Massey or that WB George “Z Klown” Mather was present to represent El Zaribah while being introduced as Illustrious Sir George Mather. As great as these accomplishments are, our Clown Unit was also well represented during this year’s session by WB Darrell “Po Po” Mandrell being awarded the 2016 Mason of the Year. I first met Darrell “Po Po” when he became Hunter Paradise Lodge’s DDGM and felt instantly warmed by him living the Masonic teachings. He was and is friendly, welcoming, giving, and never afraid to go that extra mile for his brothers. We introduced him to the Shrine and to the Clowns and he never looked back. He lives the Masonic tenets (Brotherly Love, Relief, and Truth) and works tirelessly at living a life of Masonic Charity. I wouldn’t have enough paper to describe the laundry list of giving to the VA home, Susan G. Komen Foundation, Red Sneaker Fund, CHIPs program, or any other charity he’s been associated with (or started). He knows no boundaries and puts his heart and soul in all that he does. There is no doubt that “Po Po” is well deserving of this high award, but the best moment in the day was when this humble man was flabbergasted at hearing his name when it was awarded. Since the Grand Lodge sessions, WB Darrell/PoPo attended the Imperial Sessions and ISCA competition in Tampa, Florida. This was his first time ever competing and he won 3rd place for make-up/costume and was in the top 5 for Parade-ability. He is a fine man, Shriner, and Mason and our fraternity is better by having him with us. The El Zaribah Clowns could not be more proud of him and know with Nobles/Joeys like this, our future is bright. A proud Clown

Culinary Unit: Ken Conner,

Scribe until relieved It is hard to believe the Summer has gone so quickly! It has been busy for the Culinary Unit as we have been practicing hitting moving targets with our gravy and sauces! Never underestimate how much time we spend honing our skills. We are really a very sporting Unit, believing everyone needs a chance to get away from our pouring and ladling skills. Though, not many miss our aim. We had a Pizza Party at Red Devil Pizza in the middle of July. No one was injured. We had a good turnout of members. Dave Smith failed his Pizza serving technique test though. Pizza should be served as a triangle not a roll. sales have been good, thanks to Mike Fenno’s sales at Shuman’s Auto Clinic repair shop. He makes up 95% of our sales and does a great brake job to boot. Thanks Mikey! Just remember to pick up your shells.

agreed to restore the engine, replace the master cylinder and power steering unit other safety issues during the summer as time permitted. Chuck expects the Greetermobile to be ready in time for the Shrine Circus. Kudos to Chuck for his efforts in keeping the Greetermobile on the road and parade ready. The annual Corn Fest is a major fundraiser for El Zaribah and a few Greeters provided assistance at the front door. We’re all looking forward to the Circus in September and parade season this fall. Our Crab Feed is scheduled for Friday, January 27. Last year a toxic algae delayed the dungeness season by several weeks.and may drive up prices again this year. Tickets this year are $35 per person and will be available from any Greeter or through our On-Line Store at el-zaribah.org. Instead of the raffle, we’re planning a live auction in the shrine auditorium. We will be limited to 320 tickets so plan to get yours early. Like the Marines, we’re always looking for a few good men. We meet the third Monday of each month at the El Zaribah Shrine Center. Join us around 5:30 PM for libations and dinner.

Mounted Patrol Unit

We are still meeting in the Red Fez Room the third Tuesday of the month for dinner and a meeting following. All are welcome and remember we don’t have to serve this one. But we will be serving at the Unit Head and Stated Meetings, which are a great way to meet other Nobles as we dribble beans on their thumbs. Remember, I am the one with the clean apron and Dave serves rolled pizza slices. See you at The Shrine!!!

Greeters Unit:

Ellis (Nick) Nichols, Treasurer The Greeters have some sad news… This spring our tired old limo failed the Arizona emmissions inspection when we tried to renew our license tabs. Worse yet, the old Cadillac failled all diagnotic and compression tests on the engine. The Greeters were faced with over $3,500 in minimum repairs to bring the beloved caddy back to roadworthy. Chuck Richards began a personal fund raising campagn by contacting former Greeters and friends of our streach limo and asking for their support. Within a few weeks, Chuck had secured enough pledges to begin work on the engine. Ed Matos, owner of AZ Classic Restoration in Mesa

Greetings and best wishes to all of you from your friends at the Mounted Patrol. We are happy to share some great news with all our friends. F i r s t , we have voted in a new member who happens to be the son of our esteemed Jim Meredith. His name is also Jim and we are pleased he opted to join our unit. Welcome aboard Jim. Next, we are excited to announce our fall Round up/ Ride will be happening at the beautiful E Z Ranch, October 12 to 16. It will be fully catered. All meals Friday, Saturday, and a farewell breakfast on Sunday will be fully catered. Look for a flyer and please consider joining us for a fantastic experience. We are looking forward to seeing you at one of the meetings. Until then, stay well and be happy. From your friends in the Mounted Patrol. Vaya Con Dios

Oriental Band UniT: O. B. Scribe

Hi Nobles and All, Just a few lines to tell you all hello after a long, hot summer. Not much to report at the close of the summer months. We plan on attending the Payson Parade in August. I hope you all had a great summer. Hope to see you all in good health in September, 2016.

Apache Wells Shrine Club, Jack Roberts, Club Scribe

Indianapolis, Indiana in June, was a big success. We beamed with pride when our own PQ Bobbie Balthazor, Supreme Attendant, escorted our Supreme Queen during the Session. Another proud moment during our Supreme Session was the presentation of over $3,000,000 to be used in the 22 Shriners Hospitals presented by the Supreme Temple Daughters of the Nile Foundation. Our own Qadesh Temple No 35 was recognized for giving $10, 854.08. We also received a ribbon for initiating 17 new members last year. We hope to do that well this year. Congratulations to our new Supreme Appointments: PQ Bobbie Balthazor, Membership and Public Relations Committee; PQ Carol Anton, Supreme Goodwill Ambassador to the Pacific and Mountain Area; and PQ Betty Ann Stockton, Escort to the Supreme Temple Banner. We are looking forward to our summer Fun Fundraiser at the Organ Stop Pizza on August 16 from 5 – 8 PM at 1149 E. Southern Ave in Mesa. Please bring friends and family and join us. Stop by and say hello at our booth at the CornFest (August 20th - 21st) and check out our two baskets we plan to raffle.

Bugle Welcome back from the summer vacations! The Drum & Bugle Corps took a few months off this summer from all meetings and practices. The time off allowed us all to recharge and then come back together and start right back up in August. We plan to perform both days at the Cornfest in late August, Saturday at 1:00 pm and Sunday at noon. We hope you are able to see us one or both of the days. The Cornfest is always one of our favorite events to play for due to the great crowds. The Drum & Bugle Corps will be looking into which Shrine events we are able to attend and perform in the 2nd half of 2016. We may even show up where you least expect us. As always, in the month of October, we will be at the Shrine Ceremonial in Lake Havasu City. We will be performing multiple times throughout that weekend. We hope to be able to liven up the Hospitality area on Friday and then again Saturday at the Ladies Luncheon and Banquet. Try to stay cool, these summer months are drawing to a close.

Greetings Provost-men, Hopefully everyone is having a great summer in our “Dry Heat” and looking forward to a return in the fall. A belated thanks to all the members who worked over the summer since we last met. The time is drawing near to the two biggest events of the year; the Cornfest on August 20 and 21st and the Circus on September 9, 10 & 11. Our Duty Officer has scheduled workers for the Cornfest and he will be notifying the membership in August to schedule workers at the Circus. A big thanks to Arturo for making it possible for our carts to be inside for the summer, instead of in the hot storage unit. This will help prolong their life a little. Remember our first meeting after being dark for the summer will be on September 8, 2016, MARK YOUR CALENDARS. Attention to all the new Nobles who joined in our successful Spring Ceremonial. Come out and visit the Provost Club if you are interested in keep the Shrine Center secured for Rental events and Shrine Activities, starting with our first meeting, September 8, 2016 and thereafter every 2nd Thursday of the month with dinner and fellowship in the Red Fez Room at 5:30 followed by our meeting at 6:30 pm. For information contact Captain Jim Leppert (623-5169363) or email at chijimbo14@q.com. See you soon.

gearing up for our trip to Medford, OR, in September for the LOS Western Area Organized Unit Meet. We’re planning to have a great time renewing friendships and showing off our Units. I’m looking forward to watching all the Units perform once again. We’re also planning a hospitality party to promote the 2017 event when we will be hosting the Wild, Wild Western Unit Meet here in Scottsdale. It should be a great time. You are invited to our “Sunset by the Sea” Painting Party on Saturday, 9/24/16. Whether you are a Picasso or still working on a straight line, you will leave with a masterpiece all your own. Appetizers and sweets will be provided. Wine and non-alcoholic drinks will be available for sale. The cost is $45/painter or $10 if you just want to come down to watch your friends paint and enjoy some great party food. We will be at El Zaribah Shrine Center in the Fiesta Room. The fun starts at 5:30PM, with painting starting at 6:00. Space is limited, so give me a call at 623337-3226 for tickets. If you have ever wondered what the Ladies Oriental Shrine is about, your chance to find out is on October 2nd at 2:00. We’ll be having an informational Afternoon Tea and would love to meet and greet you. If you are interested, please contact Janet Massey at 480861-8209 or me and we’ll send you an invitation. It should be a nice afternoon with good food, good friends and good times.

Once again, J C Reece and Randy Peters are working to get our newest Nobles introduced to our Shrine Family through our parades. My family and I thank you, my Masonic and Shrine family, for the many cards and messages on the death of my Mother. Mom was 91 years old and had a full life. She enjoyed her visits with many of you over the years. I, personally, am quite moved by the kind thoughts you shared. Thank You, from the bottom of my heart.
