From The Potentate... Nobles and Ladies, Wow! What a weekend. We began with the Casa Grande OV and drove from there to Yuma. We had a wonderful time with Casa Grande’s members and Ladies, enjoying good fellowship. In Yuma for the Silver Spur Rodeo weekend, thanks to Gary Steeves we had great golf Fri. morning. I’m convinced some of my shots didn’t hit the mark due to blustery winds. At Fri. night’s Joint OV with Yuma and Foothills Shrine Clubs, held at the Marine Corps Air Station, we were first entertained by our Drum & Bugle Corps, and although it hurt a few of them to do so, they provided a beautiful rendition of the Marine Corps Hymn for me. We were treated wonderfully by the members and Ladies of the Shrine Clubs and during the OV, received very sizable donations from both Shrine Clubs and their Ladies, Foothills Colts and the Shriner Diners. We also received a very sizable donation from the “Route 66” Band that performs at many of the Shriner Diner events. Being joined by Al Bahr’s Nobles and Ladies that weekend was the icing on the cake. What great friendships we have with them and what a difference adding them with us made in the Parade. After the Parade, Al Bahr treated us to fried chicken and all the trimmings. Here came the Hillbillies. My hat’s off to Guy Williams & Jane Sheldon, respective Rabbans of the Clan for the Hillbillies & Hillbilly Mommas; Fred Rogers & Jackie Miller, Keepers of the Cob; Tom Sheldon & Lynn Hatch, Guardians of the Still and Jasper Nichols, Hillbilly Bard, for initiating 17 new men-type cuzins’ and 11 new wimmun-folk into the Hillbillies. Everyone had a great time. The Yuma weekend was capped off by a little entertainment in the Hospitality Room provided by Hospitality Chairman Ron Miller, Oriental Guide Chris Hagenian with his Al Bahr counterpart Dave Pirie, Ill. Sir George Acuna and myself, raising nearly $500 for the Hospital Transportation Fund. Word has it the “Dancing Potentates” may be seen again. During that weekend and since, I’ve had so many people tell me what a great time they had. Special thanks to Ron & Earlene Miller and Don & Shirley Hettervik, along with “Tom’s Wild & Crazy Crew” for another wonderful Hospitality Suite and to Ed Stolze for providing the crew’s brilliant pink shirts. The weekend ended with a Joint OV and Valentine’s Dance with the Mobile Nobles and Legion of Honor at Venture Out Mobile Park. It was a grand evening that included the Mobile Nobles making a healthy contribution to the Hospital Transportation Fund as well as presenting me with a very beautiful stained glass replica of my Bola Tie. Then, on behalf of the Legion of Honor, Junior Grimm presented checks to Valerie and I for the Pote’s Discretionary Fund and the First Lady’s Project. What a weekend. Our Spring Ceremonial recognizing Masonic Unity will be held at El Zaribah Saturday, April 23rd. This looks to be a very big day. Masons Support Our Advertisers

from all over AZ are being invited to attend the Arch Degree, Unit & Club Parade and afternoon Social Hour. We’ll have as our special guests Most Worshipful Grand Master James Rowan and Deputy Grand Master D. Brook Cunningham of the Grand Lodge of Arizona. The day begins at 9:00 am with a Club and Unit Orientation to the Candidates and Ladies. The 1st Section will begin at 10:00 am with lunch from 11:00 – 1:00. The Arch Degree begins at 1:00 pm followed by a Fezing Ceremony in the Auditorium. A Unit & Club Parade will begin approximately 2:30 pm and a Social Hour will be held in the Red Fez Room after the Parade. Please invite all of the non-Shrine Masons you know to attend. I’ve heard from several Nobles lately who either haven’t come around since the moment they joined El Zaribah or haven’t come around much since. Their reason? They felt they were being “hounded” into joining a Unit or Club by some of our members and instead, wanted to take time to investigate the different Units and Clubs on their own. Let’s allow these new members to take their time and investigate. Upon becoming members of El Zaribah, they’ll be placed into the newly formed “Sheiks Club” for one year. This doesn’t mean they can’t join another Unit or Club, but they’ll remain a member of the Sheiks for the year, as it’s a Club to inform the new Noble and his Lady of things such as Shrine history, Shrine etiquette and so forth. Along those same lines, I know an Elks Lodge that touts itself as “The Friendliest Lodge in the Country.” I sure hope El Zaribah can soon do the same. Unfortunately, we haven’t mended our ways as we should. An old friend of mine, a member of El Zaribah who doesn’t get in to see us as often as he’d like anymore, told me of his experience at the Samsar Awards Dinner. Seems when he walked in, he offered his hand and a friendly “Hello” to 8 Nobles in the Red Fez Room and didn’t get a response. Someone mentioned, “Maybe they didn’t know him.” All the more reason to greet someone in El Zaribah. Due to many new fund-raisers and events by the various Units & Clubs, the Divan’s calendar is full for November and December. I’d like to highly recommend that if your Club or Unit’s going to have an OV, you look at dates in April, May, September or October. Another alternative is joining up with other Units & Clubs. I can say your Divan certainly appreciates that. WSA and Imperial Session: WSA 2011 is being held in San Ramon, CA, hosted by Aahmes Shriners, June 9th - 12th and we’re staying at the San Ramon Marriott. Room rate is $89 per night. I’ll be posting a schedule of events. Please contact the El Zaribah office if you have a desire to attend. The 137th Imperial Session is being held in Denver, CO, July 3rd - 7th and you won’t find another this close for at least 11 years. We’ll be staying at the Headquarters Hotel where there’ll be a Joint Hospitality Room between the WSA Temples. Room rates are $164 per night and we only have 4 rooms left. I’ll be putting out a list of other Imperial approved, and less expensive, hotels as well. Remember to ask about the fun time available on the upcoming Pote’s Trip. Only a few rooms left. From the Treasurer... Greetings from the Bucket Closet. If you made the Stated Meeting, you know we’re financially sound and all our restricted funds are doing well. Please come to the meeting to socialize and hear the good numbers. As always, your Divan strives to find ways to entice more attendance at all our functions, so if you have any ideas, please contact any one of us. Although the Divan maintains a frugal agenda, we’re always open for something that would be a benefit to the Nobility.

Along with any plans you may have to travel in the name of Shrinedom, please consider attending a Meeting or two at any one of our outlying Shrine Clubs, or OVs. The small out-of-town Clubs always cherish anyone taking the time to visit them. If travel isn’t on the list for you, try to make a function at the Temple. Attendance and activity is what makes us thrive, so come on down and be a part of it. Hoping to see you soon, The Bucket Man

recorder’s Message... Nobles, I get questions all the time about giving to the Transportation Fund. If you have a fund-raising event and you want the money to go to the Transportation Fund, I send a request to Tampa along with our receipts and a disbursement form, asking to keep this donation in our Transportation Fund. They decide if we can keep the money. Once we’re allowed to keep whatever portion they say, the money has to remain in the Transportation Fund. On the other hand, if you’d given to the Temple’s General Operating Fund, we could transfer money from that Fund to the Transportation Fund if necessary, but we can’t transfer money from the Transportation Fund to the General Fund. I know you can raise money easier by saying the money goes to the Transportation Fund. Please keep in mind, Nobles and Ladies,

that the Temple has to have operating funds each day and if the Transportation Fund gets low, we can always transfer money from the General Fund to the Transportation Fund to cover it. Director’s staff... Nobles and Ladies, it’s a poorly kept secret that the Director’s Staff has been working hard remodeling our “attic junk room” into a plush meeting room. This couldn’t have been accomplished if it weren’t for the many hours spent by several of our members. We owe a large debt of gratitude to several people, most prominently Chucky Krebs for building our beautiful bar and the matching liquor cabinet. The Clowns at the Apache Junction Parade

April 2011 / Arabian Tales 9

...uniformed units... Legion of honor...

Mounted Patrol...

Lots of fun activity to report on. Laveen Parade had Nobles Wax, McCullough, Trundy and Johnston carrying the Colors and Grimm, LeClair, Scrimager and Hudson manning the Parade vehicle. Feb. Stated Meeting had Nobles Scrimager, Trundy, McCullough and Johnston presenting the Colors with other LOH members Hudson, Hagenian, Butler, Wax, Massey and Folker doing their things. Yuma Parade was interesting as we had Nobles Wax, Trundy and Johnston from El Zaribah teamed up with Al Bahr LOH Nobles Domingo, Kasten, Carter and Barber to lead the Parade carrying the flags of both groups. Apache Junction Parade participants were Wax, McCullough, Trundy and Johnston carrying the Colors and Hudson, Grimm and LeClair in charge of the Parade vehicle. Chandler Parade Color Guard was composed of McCullough, Wax, Trundy and Johnston with Hudson, LeClair, Scrimager, and Grimm with the Parade vehicle and Butler with his Dune Buggy. Another great activity was the Friday before the Pote’s Ball Party with Hudson, Scrimager, Wax, Trundy, Hagenian and Johnston attending. Nobles Scrimager and Trundy did themselves well preparing scrumptious goodies for our table and Noble Wax with his Skit members helped make that party a huge success. Those who didn’t attend this full house Shrine party missed a great time. The Legion of Honor Unit consists of Nobles who have served honorably or are currently members of the armed forces of their country. It’s an Honor to belong to the Legion of Honor Unit. You served your country and now have the opportunity to serve the Shrine and have fun at the same time. We lead the El Zaribah Shrine Parades, present the Colors at Stated Meetings and various other functions as requested by the Illustrious Sir. Nobles those of you with computers and access to the Internet can access the Legion of Honor Web Page at: http://members.cox.net/johnston30/ for information regarding Legion of Honor Scheduled Functions. Eligible Nobles and their Ladies are invited to check us out and attend our 6:00 pm dinner meeting held the 3rd Monday of the month. The business meeting is in the LOH Room at El Zaribah’s Auditorium at 7:00 pm each month except June, July and August. Scribe PC/Adj./Fin. Officer Virgil Johnston

Howdy ya’ll, hope this finds you and yours well and happy. Following the traditions of the Mounted Patrol, we continue to have a little fun and yet take care of business. Of course we’ll be riding in some Parades and attending other functions, but as always, we’ll be concentrating mainly on our two Rides up at the beautiful EZ Ranch. Our Spring Ride is April 29th to May 1st, and our Fall Ride will be October 21st to 23rd. Please try to attend and bring a friend! If you haven’t had the opportunity to attend one of our Rides, you’re truly cheating yourself from a fantastic experience. Riding, shooting, fishing, watching rodeo events, fine food, drinks, games, and of course, great fireside music and fellowship are all right there. You owe it to yourself to try it. As for everyday business, we continue to plug along under the capable leadership of Capt. Charlie Skooter and his Officers. We look forward to seeing you at one of the Parades or other functions. Until then, Vaya Con Dios

Transportation...

We’re having fun at the Parades! In Yuma we didn’t have our own float, but Al Bahr had one with a 10-foot-tall Genie wearing the same color scheme as our costume, but no Band. They were kind enough to invite us to be on their float and the effect of the joint effort (Genie plus Oriental Band) was well received. The Apache Junction Parade had bad weather predicted and 3 of the Band members were already sick so we canceled the float. However, Bob drove out to the Parade, and if it was raining, he might have just kept driving - but the weather cleared up nicely, so he marched in the Parade. Just ask the Divan; I think the tune is still playing in their heads! There were a lot of horses in that Parade and when ZKlown planted a flower in one of the horse droppings, Bob serenaded him with a funeral march. SC

For the 3rd time this year the Black Camel has come to visit our Unit, taking Bruce White, Hank Feltman and Bob Davis. We’ve lost Nobles the Unit will miss. These Nobles were the mainstay of Transportation, along with being some of the founding fathers. Our hearts and prayers go out to their families from all of us in Transportation. They will be missed. As for the Black Camel, we will never miss you!!! The Laveen Parade was, as always, great and again Gary crashed his car. He and our Pres got run over by this run-away vehicle; no one was hurt, so back to the body shop goes Gary’s car. Chandler Parade was a large turnout for us. It was great to see the Nobles from Payson along with some of the other folks who haven’t attended some recent events. Great job, guys. Thank you to everyone who came to surprise me on my 80th birthday. What a surprise it was!! It’s hard to believe Connie and the kids kept it a secret. I really wish I had more time to spend with each of you, however it was a wonderful day with family and friends. Thank you all again for making this milestone birthday so special for me!! Apache Wells Shrine Club was very pleased with the turnout for the February Golf Tournament and the March Pitchfork Fondue dinner. We want to thank those who participated. The money raised will be a great help in support of the Shrine Children’s Hospitals. The April Luncheon and Business Meeting will be held on the 14th at the usual time. A Steak Fry will be held for members and guests on the 21st at the Gazebo. Social hour starts at 5 and the steaks will be put on starting at 6 pm. Bring your steaks and any beverage you desire and join the fun. Hope to see you there. Finally a heads up for May, the Luncheon and business meeting will be held on May 12th, and a Steak Fry for members and guests on the 19th. Since the Club goes dark from June till September, this will be the last chance to get together as a Club till fall. Jack Roberts, Scribe

The Feb. 10th meeting was the Official Visitation of Potentate Tom Calvin and his Lady Valerie. In attendance were his Divan J “Hut” Hutson and wife Sandi, Ed Stolze, Gerry Massey and Chris Hagenian. Also present was the President of Sun Lakes Club, Lyman Hatch and his Lady Lynn. Thirty-eight Nobles and their Ladies attended. Opening the meeting, G. Paul Larson, Past Pote from Kem Temple, sang the Star Spangled Banner and the Canadian National Anthem. President Jerry Hampton turned the meeting over to the Potentate. He gave an interesting talk of encouragement and prosperity. Several of Casa Grande Shrine Club members have marched in Parades. We’re looking forward to our April meeting. Ken Karnes, Sec.

Members of El Zaribah and their Ladies with an interest in computing are invited to visit our Club meetings. Ladies attend and participate along with their Noble. Many of us meet for dinner in the Red Fez room prior to the meeting. The Club meets the 4th Monday of each month at 7:00 pm except June, July, and August. We recently purchased and installed in one of our computers a 1.5 TB hard drive to accommodate the Microsoft Tech software we acquired. This enables us to run all the various Microsoft applications available. Computers are available for working with software problems and troubleshoot and/or make basic repairs. Several “Guru’s” attend who make their living with computers and are invaluable for solving member’s problems. Come out and enjoy the camaraderie of fellow computer users. Don’t be shy about bringing your problem in for us to work on. Also a lot of good information is presented at each of our meetings. There are no dumb questions, as the answer to what might be thought dumb is what several members wanted to ask but were shy or perhaps had a problem expressing it. We spend little time with administrative action and most talking or working with computers. If you have a computer problem that requires bringing in your computer, don’t hesitate to do that. The Computer Club has a Web Page that can be accessed at: http://members.cox.net/computerclub/ It can also be accessed from the El Zaribah Web Page link. The Computer Club Web Page contains links to other web sites that provide useful information for the use of computers. Check these links out and see what they offer. Virgil Johnston, Club Sec.

Drum & bugle Corps... The Drum & Bugle Corps performed at the CIF BBQ on March 27th. We mixed it up a little by doing the Marine Hymn to honor Illustrious Sir Tom and Mickey Mouse for the kid’s enjoyment. There’s always a great crowd at the BBQ, so we really enjoy this performance. One of our part-time Buglers, Bob Aubertin, has been in the hospital back in Detroit. He’s had a hernia operation, a back operation, and will have a hip operation in a couple months. We hope to see him back in Phoenix after he recuperates. We’ve told him he’ll be a real bionic man once we get to see him again. We wish him well as he recovers. The Drum & Bugle Corps practices every Tuesday night in the Band Room at 5:30 pm. We’re a very informal group and enjoy it when anyone drops by between 5:30 and 6:30 to look us over or just to listen for a while, join us with some libations, or sample some of those Hospitality Room culinary delights Fred & Lil Rogers bring to most every meeting. Stop by sometime and say hi. Alto Bugle

Lake havasu... Greetings from Lake Havasu. The sunshine girls tell us they’re not shining today in Havasu due to the flu epidemic. Noble Ray Tidwell and Lady Gail, Noble Robert Van Slyke and Lady Shirley aren’t sure about her illness. Our Sec. Jim Woodyard’s at home in bed sick, said his Nurse Jerrie. Also this writer, Noble Harvey, is down with flu symptoms. Noble Allan Long’s Lady Lorraine has been hospitalized for breathing and heart problems, released, then back in hospital again. Now she’s at home in Allan’s care. I pray the Doctors have it right this time and she’s on to a full recovery. Noble Harry Bremner’s back from the hospital and doing much better. As Vidalia Onion Chairman, he’ll need a lot of help the last of April. Save some time, talent and energy – we have 750 10-pound bags of Onions to unload, reload and distribute to the stores such as Food City, Basha’s, Smith’s Market and Kmart, selling them all in 3 days. See ya at the Dinner Meeting at 7 pm. Harvey Sandford

Provost... It’s sad for me to report the loss of a long-time Provost Officer. Noble Bruce White passed away in February. There was a memorial held to honor his life. The Provost Club assisted Bruce’s Blue Lodge in the services. We will miss him. Provost Club Meetings are held the 2nd Thursday of the month. You’re invited to join us in the Red Fez room at 5:00 for dinner and fellowship prior to the 6:30 pm meeting. Please come and join us if you’re interested working as security for your Shrine. Please contact Captain Don Obara (480-361-6339). The uniforms will be supplied by the Provost Club, you’ll be working with experienced Officers and I’m sure you’ll find your participation very rewarding. For more information, see our website. ...Shrine Clubs... sandbaggers...

sun Lakes...

On Sunday, Feb. 20th the Sandbaggers held their Golf Outing at Augusta Ranch Golf Course. There were 14 people who participated: 10 Shriners, 1 Shriner’s Lady and 3 Friends, despite the inclement weather! We all had a good time except for our Potentate Ill. Sir Tom Calvin, who had a great time, due to the fact he got a Hole-In-One on the 6th Hole (Judge Smails claims it was from the White Marker, while some us felt it was from the Ladies Tee... Sorry Tom!) Unfortunately the rain did come and shorten the Event, which forced us to go the 19th Hole earlier than expected! Once there, Tom signed his Certificate for his Hole-In-One. He’ll also receive a Plaque for his achievement and is entered in a Hole-In-One Event at the Golf Course. Tom presented Chris Hagenian a Pink Golf Ball, then Randy Petersen presented Chris with a set of Clubs (did Chris keep them?) to help Chris with his “Short” Game, I guess. Everyone involved had a great time of fun and fellowship! And yes, we were quoting Caddyshack before, during and after the game! Submitted by Noble Michael Mangano

Sun Lakes Shrine Club’s winters festivities ended March 14th by celebrating Saint Patrick’s Day. Green in every shade and form - from shirts, coats, crazy pants and shimmering shamrock streamers tied around the neck, waist or pocketbooks, including fantastic Leprechaun table decorations - were on display for our St. Paddy’s Day Dinner Meeting. The green signifies not only Irish heritage but also heralds the approach of spring. The stated meeting was attended by 52 Nobles and Ladies who discussed the upcoming calendar of events and changes to the Club’s meeting calendar; a traditional Irish dinner of Corned Beef and Cabbage, Irish Potatoes, and tossed salad topped off with a delicious Lime Sherbet was served by the Cactus Corner. Thanks, Vicki. Jack Pate, Treas., presented to the Club Bob Hurst’s Fez and case to anyone who’d like to wear it in honor of Bob. Bob was 2002 Pres. and loyal member, taken by the Black Camel last month. We’ll miss Bob greatly. Even though our Club won’t meet again until Fall, there are still many activities at El Zaribah and Clubs around the Valley to attend. Many of us will be attending the LOS Golf Tournament May 7th at Stone Creek Golf Course, the Annual Shriners Golf Classic on May 13th at Orange Tree Golf Resort, and the Bash after the Clash Casino Night May 14th at El Zaribah. Orders for Onion Sales are closed. Noble Jack Pate, Chairman of our Onion Program, took orders for over 100 bags. Any questions, contact Jack (480-883-7958). The Jumbo Vidalia Sweet Onions are expected during the last week in April or first week in May dependent on weather during the growing season. Our 2011 Annual Golf Tournament at Sun Bird Country Club is coming up in November. The Golf committee, again headed by Don Watkins, is starting to work diligently to get things organized and ready to go! You don’t have to be a Shriner to get involved. This event is one of the main fund-raisers for the Club’s general fund. The Sun Lakes Shrine Club meets the 2nd Monday of the month at 4:30 for cocktails in the Arizona Room at the Sun Lakes Country Club, holds its monthly meeting at 5:00, with Dinner being served afterwards at 6:00 pm. Membership and your support of this Club provides a great opportunity to aid children in the Phoenix area who need help in one of the 22 Shriners Hospitals that treat orthopaedic, spinal cord and burn problems. Call Noble Lyman Hatch (480-802-4393) for more information. Tim Stock, Communication Chairman

Interested members are invited to attend the Club’s Board of Director’s meeting April 13th at Coco’s on 99th Ave. and Bell Rd. An interesting meeting is planned. Last month we were treated to a wonderful concert by the Three J’s. This group is included in an upcoming concert of Irving Berlin music by the Westernaires. April entertainment will be either a review of the Shrine Hospitals for Children or another musical program. The Social Meeting will feature distribution of our fund-raising football pool booklets and the selection of an At-Large member of the Nominating Committee for 2012 Officers. (The Nominating Committee must report at our next regular meeting in October.) Pres. Paul Meierhenry encourages all Club members to attend this last meeting of the season before departing for a wonderful summer vacation. This might be our chance to bid farewell to our immediate Past first couple, the Faulkners, who are relocating to Priest Lake, Idaho. The Club thanks them for their long and effective service to The West Valley Shrine Club!

White Mountain... The White Mountain Shrine Club is alive and well. Please make a correction in your Shrine Directory that our Club meets the 3rd Sunday of every month at 12:00 pm at JB’s Restaurants in Show Low (not Pat’s Place). Also, that President Emeritus Max Long is our 1st VP, not Matt Williamson. Other Officers are: 2nd VP Larry Logan; Sec/Treas. Jack Wade and Chaplain Jim Fugate. Attendance this winter has been light, but the weather’s warming up and we expect many of our summer members to be back with us soon. We’re looking forward to participating in Show Low’s 4th of July Parade, but more especially to the Official Visit of Potentate Tom Calvin and the Pinetop/Lakeside Parade on September 24th. We were pleased to have El Dulab Pres. Howard Goldman as surprise guest at our February meeting. We expect he and Lady Shirley to become members of our Club soon, as they have a place here in Lakeside. Our best to all Units and Clubs in 2011. Come see us when it gets a little warm in the Valley!!! Dick Doane, Pres.

Zane Grey...

For information, contact Pres. Gary Steeves (307-689-0774). Our 2011 winter season will be at an end when this is printed. Our visiting Nobles will have packed, up anchored and headed north. They take wonderful memories of Yuma in Feb., when Al Bahr Nobles came from the west and El Zaribah Nobles came from the east, to celebrate the Silver Spur weekend with golf arranged by Club Pres. Gary. Bet’s were won and lost. Tiz a strange game, however all enjoyed it. The stupendous Parade found our Colts Unit in full force with scooters and its people trailer joined with the Shriner Dinner RV Vehicle and the Mini cars of Yuma Shrine Club Renegade Unit. The many spectators enjoyed Shrinedom on display - Dignitaries in convertibles, camels, motorcycles, Clowns, mini cars, and much, much more. What a great OV!!! I congratulate Club President Gary of our Foothills Club and President Don of the Yuma Club for an outstanding event attended by over 200. Illustrious Sir Tom Calvin was very grateful for the generous donations made by both Clubs and their Units, plus our 50/50 Ladies. The Shriner Diner Band “The Route 66” received a deserved standing ovation. The El Zaribah Drum and Bugle Corps were great! Later, the gates to the El Zaribah and Al Bahr hospitality rooms were flung wide to all for their enjoyment. Lots of enjoyment! Hillbilly Clan #65 edgeecated a bunch of flatland men and thar gals to the mean’un of the cob. However our activities ain’t over yet! Those remaining in Yuma will join the Yuma Shrine Club at their Fair Booth when Illustrious Tom and his cohorts plus their Ladies are expected to arrive with sleeves rolled up. IT’S GRAND TO BE A SHRINER. Joe Elleard, news writer

The Zane Grey Shrine Club met Feb. 16th at Tiny’s Restaurant in Payson. There were 32 Nobles and Ladies in attendance. Guests were Noble Jack Blann and wife Lady Carol, and Barbara Ives. Payson Lodge #70 is selling raffle tickets for two round trip tickets within the US 50 States for only $20. There will be a winner of two tickets (odds no greater than 1 in 300) for every 300 tickets sold. See details on http://www.paysonmason.org/raffle_add.html or contact any member to purchase tickets. On March 16th, we held our monthly meeting with 40 Nobles and Ladies in attendance. Guests were Jack Blann and Lady Carol, Barbara Ives, and Tyler, Cody and Rod Watson. It was noted that Noble Ken Lawton, PM and Walter Harrison, PM had passed since our last meeting. Ken Lawton’s funeral was March 11th and Walter Harrison’s funeral was March 17th. Representatives of Payson Lodge #70, Ponderosa Chapter 64 OES and Nile provided updates on their current and future activities. Zane Grey Shrine Club meets on the 3rd Wednesday at 5:30 pm at Tiny’s Restaurant. Please join us if you’re in the Payson area.

Yuma... A spring hello to all. As you are reading this, we’ll be at the fair! We had such a great OV this year. Thanks to all who helped and thanks to the Foothills Club. Together, we’re the greatest working for our kids. The weather’s perfect now after a cool winter and many winter visitors are heading home or out to tour the country for the summer. Come back safely, we’ll be holding the fort down. I do miss my gavel! Yours in the faith, Don Plank, Pres.

...Noble of the Month, Clinic News & Transportation Donations... Noble of The MoNTh - februAry Shriner of the Month - Randy Peters Randy was born in Sioux City. At 9, he saw the Beatles & decided he wanted to play guitar & be in a band. By the time he was 11, he was playing in bars in 3 states. His music career was taking off, so he decided to try the big time & go on the road. He joined the Bonesteel Band in 1973, co-writing songs & opening for such bands as Molly Hatchet, Amazing Rhythm Aces, Ozark Mountain Daredevils & Marshall Tucker. In 1983 he married Cindy, in ‘85 they moved to Tucson & in ‘90 moved to Phoenix. He & Cindy have 2 children & 3 (soon to be 4) grandchildren. Randy wrote & produced a song, Big Sioux River - in ‘98, it was #1 for 6 weeks on the independent charts. In ‘99, the song earned him & the Bonesteel Band a Grammy Nomination. He & the Band were inducted into the Iowa Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2003. In 2005, after 3 years of trying to catch him with a weekend off, Dave Smith got him to come to the EZ Ranch for the Roundup & play some songs. Randy was hooked. He wanted to become a Shriner. He became an El Zaribah Shriner during the Lake Havasu Ceremonial. He joined the Mounted Patrol in Dec. ‘06 & a mere 10 min. after being voted in, they voted him Sec./Treas. 2007 & ‘09 Randy was Mounted Patrolman of the Year. In ‘10 he served as Onion Chairman, Mounted Patrol Capt. & Executive Aide for Ill. Sir Phil Houghton. 2011, Chairman of the Potentate’s Ball, Onion Chairman & Executive Aide to the Potentate. Randy loves children - that’s why the work the Shrine does is so important to him. Congratulations Randy!

Clinic News... I’ve often been asked, “El Zaribah Shrine sends our patients to which Shrine Hospitals?” El Zaribah currently has patients in 8 Hospitals: LA, Salt Lake, Northern CA, Portland, Chicago, St. Louis, Philadelphia & Boston. The primary Shrine Hospitals we support are LA & Salt Lake City & a very large percentage of our patients are sent to these 2 hospitals. However, if a patient needs specialized care that isn’t offered at either of these hospitals, we send the patient to the appropriate hospital that offers that care. The bottom line is we always strive to do what’s best for the patient & get them to the hospital that will best suit their needs. You may not be aware that our LA Hospital has an outstanding plastic surgery staff. All of us should be on the lookout for potential patients that could benefit from this service. Please contact the El Zaribah Shrine Hospital Office (602-231-0188) if you find a patient that could use plastic surgery, either from

a burn, birth defect or just cosmetic. It can’t hurt to submit the child to see if our surgeons could help. I’d like to recognize Noble Guy Williams as our Hospital Clinic Volunteer of the month for March. Guy is always at our Clinics. He’s responsible for getting the signs in place prior to the start of the Clinics & is always present at the doors directing our patients & families to the Clinic location. Membership...

On behalf of the Officers of Qadesh Temple #35, we thank our members, family, friends and Shriners for attending our recent Installation. You all made it a very special day! Our Annual Spring Party, Fun in the Sun, will be held Saturday, April 30th, at El Zaribah Shrine Center with an 11:00 am Social and 12:00 Noon Luncheon. The fashions will be from Draper’s & Damon’s. Please send your reservation check in the amount of $25 to Bobbie Balthazor, PQ, 5915 E Woodridge Dr., Scottsdale, AZ 85254-6439 by April 20th. Please be sure to note your meal choice of chicken or fish on your check. For further information, call 602-237-5526. We hope to see you there! Betty Ann Stockton, Queen

From the Membership Development Committee: El Zaribah has created a few Membership Programs for the Spring Ceremonial to make it easier to recruit new Shriners. 1) Family Recruitment Program - Recruit 2 members from the same family (father, son, grandson, brother) at the same time and both can join for the price of 1. 2) Officer Recruitment Program - Recruit any combination of 2 Officers (Master, Sr. Warden, Jr. Warden, Sr. Deacon or Jr. Deacon) from the same Blue Lodge at the same time and both can join for the price of 1. 3) Recognition Program - When you’re the top line signer, you’ll get a Shine Recruiting polo shirt. For each time you’re a top line signer, you’ll get a “Fez Number” to dangle from your tassel (see picture), exchanging the previous number with the new number. Petitions need to be received in the Office by April 18th. For more details, contact a member of the Recruitment Team: Bob Beffel, Doug Fry, Tom Sheldon or Jim Miller, PP.

Ladies Oriental shrine... Hello from Sphinx Court #65, Ladies Oriental Shrine of North America. We just Installed our new slate of Officers and we’re ramping up for a really great year! Our first fund-raiser, a Golf Tournament, will be May 7th at Stone Creek Golf Course in Paradise Valley and we’re hoping you’ll be able to participate. We’ll have Bingo and a wonderful dinner following the golf. You’ll find all the information in our ad in this issue, or on the El Zaribah web site using the link to LOS - or call me, Paula Mattingly, or Barbara Hineman. Please tell your Ladies about our LOS group. It’s a wonderful complement to the men’s Shrine - you’ll both meet many wonderful new folks and together, help our Shrine Kids even more. Our thoughts and prayers are with those who are ill or have lost loved ones. Janet Mielke, High Priestess 2011-12
