...uniformed units... Greeters... It’s with crossed fingers we enter into October. If good intentions were all that was necessary, I’d just say the Greeters will be seeing you at the Ceremonial with our Caddie convertible holding a good representation of our members as we Parade with other El Zaribah Units. However, I must confess that good intentions don’t always get the job done. We’ll be playing this one a day at a time, but hopefully any last minute hitches will be resolved and we’ll be there. Once again the Greeters have managed to come together supporting the “Night of the Child.” The table on which you’ll find our Unit name next month at this gala and so important event filled up more rapidly than it did last year. If it helps at all, the Greeters would collectively say “DIBS” for any other table(s) that may open up, as I’m sure we could fill at least one or possibly two more. Unit and Club Elections will soon be upon us. For those who’ve never had the privilege to serve, now would be the time to give it careful consideration. Granted, at times it can feel as though it’s a chore rather than a privilege and you wonder where you can manage to find the time, but you do. And in the long run after your year of service nears the end, you can look back at accomplishments made with the sense of pride that rightfully belongs to you and the others within the Unit who came together to proudly proclaim, “I was a Leader.” Until next month.....

Legion of honor... It’s September at this writing and it’s still hot! Payson Parade marchers were Wax, Hettervik and Johnston with Scrimager and Trundy in the Parade Float tow vehicle. LOH members Hagenian, Butler and Massey were doing their things. Congratulations are in order for Ms. Janet Mitchell and Gerry Massey getting “hitched.” It was a beautiful wedding and a great crowd to support

them. They make a very nice couple. On a sad note, PC Tom Horn passed away on Aug. 22nd at his home in Sidney, Canada with his wife “Okie” and sister Betty at his side. We in the Legion of Honor will really miss him. On another sad note, we just learned that PC Walter E. Shade passed away Feb. 5th. He’ll be missed by the Legion of Honor, also. He hadn’t been active in recent years. The Legion of Honor is undertaking a Retirement of US Flags Ceremony for Flags that are no longer serviceable. A holding receptacle will be placed in the Red Fez room to receive non-usable flags. We’ve developed a Flag Burning Ceremony to Honor and Destroy unusable flags in a dignified manner. The Ceremony is scheduled for Nov. 11, 2011 at 1:30 pm in an area to the West of El Zaribah’s Auditorium. Everyone’s urged to place non-usable flags in the holding receptacle or to bring them to the Ceremony. We plan to make this an annual ceremony. The Legion of Honor Unit consists of Nobles who served honorably or are currently members of the armed forces of their country. It’s an Honor to belong to the Legion of Honor Unit. You served your country and now have the opportunity to serve the Shrine and have fun at the same time. We lead the El Zaribah Shrine Parades, present the Colors at Stated Meetings and various other functions as requested by the Illustrious Sir. Nobles, those of you with computers and access to the Internet can access the Legion of Honor Web Page at: http://members.cox.net/johnston30/ for information regarding Legion of Honor Scheduled Functions. Eligible Nobles and their Ladies are invited to check us out and attend our 6:00 pm dinner meeting held the 3rd Monday of the month. The business meeting is in the LOH Room at 7:00 pm each month except June, July and August. Scribe PC/Adj./Fin. Officer Virgil Johnston

Flag Retirement-Disposal Ceremony... On Friday, Nov. 11th (11-11-11) Veterans Day at 1:30 pm, El Zaribah Shrine will hold its first Flag Retirement-Disposal Ceremony (following the Tempe Veterans Day Parade). This is for the proper disposal of American flags which have become worn, faded or tattered through exposure to the elements. The Legion of Honor will be performing the Ceremony, distilled from those Ceremonies performed by the U.S. military, American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. The public is invited to attend. A collection canister is in the Red Fez Room for those who have flags you would like to have included in this Ceremony. You may also bring worn, faded or tattered flags with you when you attend the Ceremony. For any questions, please call David Scrimager (602-6175692). www.el-zaribah.org
