Dana Dobson is new Oriental Guide

El Zaribah’s Election night was held during the December Stated meeting. The two candidates announced for Oriental Guide were Dana Dobson and Keith “Lucky” Seplak. Having a rather large crowd with over 140 attending was nice to see. Attendance was good and included about 10% of the nobility. The election for Oriental Guide was very close. When the election was complete, tellers checked the ballots and Dana Dobson was declared the winner. Nobles Nate Boyer and Mike McGee ran for Treasurer, since Ill. Sir Dave Polner decided to step down. Mike McGee won that election. The other progressive line officers were elected to their next positions and Ill. Sir Jack Garret was re-elected as Recorder for 2016. Noble George “Z-Klown” Mather was elected Potentate for 2016. George seemed surprised he was elected but since he is a clown, you never know if he meant it or was just “clowning around”. After the meeting, the nobility retired to the Red Fez Room for celebration. Dana Dobson appeared to be in shock that he won, but that is quite normal when you work so hard to be elected. Dana has worked to raise funds for our Hospital program and for the general good of El Zaribah. With his experience and caring, he will make a good leader for El Zaribah Shrine. Congratulations Dana, on your election to the position of Oriental Guide!

Lake Havasu Fall Ceremonial: A Great Success

Over Halloween weekend, the El Zaribah Shriners held a parade and ceremonial in Lake Havasu at the London Bridge Resort. Here you can see many of our new nobles in various scenes dressed as bedouins and finally that evening they were fezzed at the Lake Havasu OV and Ceremonial Banquet. Assitant Temple photographer, Allen Nichols, took these pictures; this is only a sampling of over 350 pictures taken that weekend. You can see more of this wonderful event on the back page of this issue plus even more on our website, www.el-zaribah.org. This event continues to be a lot of fun, but mixing with Halloween and costumes the weekend becomes just a bit more wild and even more exciting. Our hospitality room continues to be a huge hit. Watch for this event in 2016. Attending the Fall Ceremonial is a great way to celebrate being a shriner!

Shriners On the Go at PIR

Ill. Sir Chris Hagenian and Lady Mary attended the races at Phoenix International Raceway in November. Temple Photographer, Mike Folker, went along and took some great shots of Ill. Sir Chris and others enjoying the races. This is a terrific example of Shriners On the Go!! Where have you traveled? Where have you visited and shared that you are a Shriner? We’d LOVE to share your expeditions, travels, and experiences! Send your photos and 100 word story about your photos to arabian.tales@el-zaribah.org

The look of the Arabian Tales has changed!! El Zaribah’s divan has been trying to reduce operating costs and they asked us to develop a transition plan to help navigate to a newspaper format to help with the reduction of costs. The layout is different but the content is the same. This NEW format gives us the ability to produce the content in color! Please note: we are still in transition, and things will continue to evolve and change. Our desire is to give you the same great content you have come to expect. While, at the same time, save money for El Zaribah to continue its support of Shrine kids. Isn’t that what this whole organization is about?

From your Potentate...

Nobles & Ladies, As I sit down for the final article of the year I find it hard to express the gratitude and love Lady Mary and I have for all of you and the thanks that we both owe our Nobles and Ladies for making El Zaribah run smoothly for another year. Change is perpetual, and as we grow or shrink we must respond accordingly to accommodate that change and keep the Temple on the right track for longevity. Our hope is for perpetual growth, fun times, great fundraisers, and a love for our philanthropy. As with any year we have our triumphs and shortcomings. The good news (to highlight a few) is that our clubs in the northern part of the state are experiencing growth and positivity, we accomplished the goal of updating the Temple with high-speed internet and a new wireless system, WSA, the election of Imperial Sir Ed Stolze, and produced some new and fun events. Due to the expenses with our fire code issue we were not able to implement a POS system into our bar/restaurant area, but perhaps in the future that will happen, membership is still down, and some Units and Clubs are on the verge of folding due to lack of members or participation. All of this can be overcome. Financially, we are “OKAY” yet still have concerns with our general fund and its income. As that money becomes less your Divan needs to look at what is being offered to the Nobility and begin to cut back, this is a decision that no Potentate wants to make, but it is the

The initial cost is $25. Almost 70% ($17) of the fee goes to charities supported by Arizona Masons.

harsh reality of a business. As the general fund increases, more and better services and benefits can be offered. As I said throughout the year, this is OUR temple it’s only as good as we make it. We had a fantastic time working with everyone, meeting new Nobles and Ladies, creating memories, and working toward a solid future of El Zaribah. Remember it’s not the man in the office you are supporting, it’s the Temple as a whole, never forget this; if we all band together we can achieve better and greater heights in the name of Fun, Fraternalism, and Philanthropy! I thank all of the Temple Staff for their hard work and dedication in keeping the Temple running on a daily basis. Thank you to Illustrious Sirs Jack Garrett and Jim Miller for their contributions and keeping me straight and level-headed throughout the year. To all the appointed positions thank you for your service and rising to the occasion to serve your Temple, some for the first time and others for multiple years of service. Illustrious Sir Leo and Lady Bobbie – this is the last time you will need to chase me down for an article; thank you for all your help on the Arabian Tales. It has been our honor and pleasure to serve you, although Lady Mary and I have moved away from the valley, we are still a phone call or email away should you feel the need to say “hello.” Yours In The Faith, Chris

2015 in reflection. As we look back on the events of 2015 we can remember the fun and fellowship we were able to share with our Nobles and Ladies. The new friends we made from other Shrine Temples. The inspiration we received from our inter connections at associations and Imperial functions. My Lady and I had the honor of going back to the Great Lakes Shrine Association region and attend the Ohio Shrine Association meeting with our Imperial Sir Ed Stolze who was campaigning at the time for Imperial Outer Guard. Even though we had not been directly involved with these Nobles or Ladies since moving to Arizona in December of 2006 we were welcomed with open arms and old friendships were quickly renewed. 2015 had many great events and some well needed changes were made to our Temple’s appearance and our internet access systems. Many needed repairs were made also. We thank Ill Sir Chris for his leadership and dedication to El Zaribah Shriners. Looking forward into 2016. We all can look back at the way things were in the good old days and remember them fondly. We can see where we today and enjoy what is taking place. We need to look forward and decide where we want to be tomorrow, next week, next month, and the years to come. Every effort will be made to keep El Zaribah Shriners looking forward to upcoming events and activities that are planned for 2016. All Nobles will be encouraged to attend a Lodge close to where they live even if their membership is in another local Lodge or in another State. We are all Shrine Masons and we increase our presence when we proudly let people around us see that we are part of two great organizations that share the same beliefs and work for great causes. Your attendance at other appendant bodies of Masonry is also great for us all. When the 2016 calendar rolls out please take a look at the functions planned and make plans to attend. Mark your calendars so you will see them coming up. Check the www.el-zaribah.org web site often to also see what is coming up. Changes that may be made are not always communicated are rapidly as we would like them to be. Join us in 2016 working, sharing and giving of our time and energies to have fun and fellowship in “WE PUT CHILDREN FIRST “ for the Shriners Hospital for Children. Please look at the dates for our local Shrine Hospital Clinics and ask about attending one to help us help our Shrine Children. There is also a fun filled cruise to ALASKA from A ugust 27, 2016 to September 3, 2016 planned. Many have already signed up and Lady Dorothy and I would love to have you join us. Fraternally, George Mather and Lady Dorothy

From your Assistant Rabban...

I thank all of the Nobles and Ladies of El Zaribah Shrine for allowing me to serve as your Assistant Rabban this year. This year has been a very productive, insightful, and interesting one. The Divan had the pleasure of traveling all over the state, visiting our Shrine Clubs and joining them in parades, Official Visits, and local activities that many of our Clubs are involved in. We started off this year with a great Unit and Club Officers Information Session and Installation. We had a very involved and dedicated group of Officers this year. Thank you all for your commitment and leadership to help all of our Nobles contribute to our wonderful philanthropy. We created many new Nobles this year at our Ceremonials. El Zaribah has one of the top Ceremonial casts in the country. Our Ritualistic Ceremonial Divan and our Arch Degree cast, get outstanding reviews and mention at many Imperial functions. Keep up the good work! If you are interested becoming a part of the Ceremonial cast, please ask any Divan member. In Houston this past summer, we had another successful Imperial Session. It was especially memorable for El Zaribah, as we elected our “first ever” Imperial Divan member from our Temple. Imperial Sir, Ed Stolze is now the Imperial Outer Guard for Shriners International. Congratulations Imperial Sir Ed! As we come to the end of our year, Lady Cindy and I say, “Thank you”. We have had a great time so far, Randy Peters

Your Divan From your High Priest anD Prophet...

Nobles, we are coming to the end of 2015 and ready to start a new year with new challenges. This past year has gone by quickly and we have all given many hours of work around the Shrine. With those many hours of work there have also been many hours, if not days, of fun and fellowship between us all. I have too many great memories and achievements to mention that we, as a team, completed together to place in this short article. But a couple of the big ones were the Corn Fest, the Circus, and our Shrine Children’s Christmas party. They were lots of work but an equal if not more amount of fun and fellowship was had by all who participated. Thank all of you for all your support, laughter and fellowship. Thanks to the ladies also, without you our Shrine could not do all the great things we do. Sooooo, thank you ladies and Nobles for all you do and have done this past year. Now as we look forward to the new year and go head long into it, remember the vows we took as Masons and Shriners. I ask, again, that we all work together and as we work together remember we are all here for the good of the Shrine, our Children, and our Hospitals. I am looking forward to working with you all this next year to achieve even more wonderful achievements, to meet the challenges ahead, and have a lot more fun, fellowship and laughter together. As individuals we can achieve good things, as a group or team we can achieve wondrous things together. Fraternally, JC Reece

From your Treasurer...

El Zaribah is, and has been, in a transitory state of financial management. This is due to multiple factors, many of which are beyond our local control. By this I elude to rising utility costs, building maintenance, food and bar costs that we incur. Those that are in our control and impacting our bottom line include declining membership, rental opportunities and balancing services with cost of those services. The temple’s restricted funds (Road fund, Hospital funds and endowments) remain sound. The issue is the fluidity of our day-to-day income and outlay in managing our liquid assets. Since the temple does not have a steady income monthly, we must depend on payment of dues, circus income and fundraising from units and clubs. Often, the Divan must decide the priority of projects on a short term basis to meet our needs. This why the Divan frequently prefers contributions to the General Fund over Transportation Fund. Remember, without the fraternity, there is no one to support the hospitals. This not a plea to “throw in the towel.” This is an explanation of some of the factors that must be dealt with daily. Thank you for your support and assistance this year. It has been my privilege to serve the temple as treasurer. Yours in the Faith Dave Polner, P.P.

From your Oriental Guide...

WOW! As much as I was told that the year would fly by quickly, I still can’t believe it’s over already! We hit the ground running, or actually wheels rolling, on New Year’s Day and it’s been a blast ever since. One thing I learned right off the bat was that when they tell you to have coffee and donuts ready for the ride at 8:00, they really mean to have them ready at 7:30. It was a year full of Fun and Fellowship and doing what we all do best, the things necessary to be able to take care of our Shrine kids. From the parade and OV in Yuma to the Ceremonial in Havasu, it was a fun filled year! I even got a chance to slip in a trip to Tampa for Oriental Guide school where I was able to meet new Brothers and get some new ideas that hopefully we’ll be able to use and implement to help us in our work here. I would be remiss if I didn’t take this opportunity to extend a BIG thank you to Jim Hoover and his Cornfest Committee and crew of Nobles and Ladies for a GREAT job well done. We served almost 1200 meals in the 2 days and raised a lot of well needed money for the General Fund. Thank you ALL for your very much appreciated hard work and dedication. To all “My” clubs and Units that I was assigned to as your rep, thank you all. It has been an honor to serve as your den mother. Thank you for all your support and all you do for the Temple. I look forward to continuing that Brotherhood and am sorry I didn’t get a chance to see some of you more. A shout out to Mohave Shrine Club for the “Seat of Honor” you afforded me at your OV!! To all our new Nobles, I encourage you all to get involved. I can guarantee you that you’ll never have a better time working so hard at times and doing so much good. In closing, I again thank you all for the trust you put in me when you voted for me to represent you as your Oriental Guide. I look forward to being able to continue the journey as part of the Leadership team of the Temple, but we’re only going to be successful if EVERYONE is working hard and pulling together, remembering that are all here for our Shrine kids. Respectfully submitted, Ken Neusch

From your Chief of Staff...

Whirlwind, Blur, invigorating, exhausting, educating, intoxicating, exasperating, motivating, FUN! Done, Already! Where did it go? These are just some of the descriptors that Lady Katrina and I would use to describe our year as Chief of Staff. We started off hitting the ground running with the Pote’s Ball, a trial by fire! We survived and even had some fun. We turned around and we were in Yuma, do you know how many Past Potentates there are in Yuma? And how many Temples they represent? Too many for a rookie Chief of Staff! Oh by the way Illustrious Sir, don’t forget to announce Lady Mary! Then on to Vegas baby! WSA, yup an extra duty, but it sure was fun! A few more parades, meetings and OVs and now we have to start planning our trip to Houston and Imperial Session. Where did the time go? I thought we went dark in the summer! In Houston there was so much to see, so many people to meet, so many votes to get, oh yah, and a dinner to plan! Whew! Illustrious Sir Ed is now Imperial Sir Ed, mission accomplished! And now Katrina and I decide to run for Oriental Guide! Not busy enough I guess! Here comes September, more meetings, parades, and OVs. When did it become December? I will say that our year has been a blur of activity and the best experience that I have ever had in the Shrine! Katrina and I wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world! We have met so many great people and made so many new friends during the year and that alone is worth any of our efforts. There are so many people to thank for helping us out, that there is no way that I wouldn’t leave some out. So I will say thank you to everyone. The Pote’s staff was excellent and made our job so much easier. The Nobility and their Ladies have been wonderful, always willing to lend a hand and offer moral support. Thank you to all who offered advice throughout the year, it was very helpful. Most of all I would like to thank Illustrious Sir Chris and First Lady Mary for the experience of a lifetime. It has been our honor and privilege to serve Chris and Mary, our Temple, and our Nobility as Chief of Staff for 2015. Dana Dobson

HOSPITAL NEWS

Nobles: If you missed the Lake Havasu Ceremonial, you missed an opportunity to meet an incredible family. Our Shrine Patient Ambassador for the Ceremonial was Tatiana and she brought her mother and father. Wendy, Tatiana’s mother, shared Tatiana’s story at both the Ladies’ Luncheon and the Banquet. It is truly an inspiration; Tatiana was never supposed to be able to walk. Not only can she walk, but she is getting ready to graduate from high school. I do have to set the record straight. At the banquet, Tatiana was getting very hungry and took it upon herself to let the El Zaribah Shrine Chief of Staff, Noble Dana Dobson, that it was time to call our table to go through the food line. Dana succumbed to Tatiana’s cuteness and called our table. I know that everyone thinks I put Tatiana up to this, but she did it all on her own. When our Shrine Patients get something on their mind, they have the confidence to get it done and that was the case of Tatiana. Way to go Tatiana! Fraternally, Jim Miller, PP Hospital Chairman
