Official Publication of El Zaribah Shrine in Phoenix, Arizona

120 Years Strong!

Ill. Sir George Mather and 1st Lady Dorothy show off the special 120th Anniversary Cake at the party following the February Meeting. Our newly elected officers of El Zaribah Shrine are shown waiting to greet first time visitors at their 1st true meeting of the year. Note how bright and shiny they look in their new suits. Oriental Guide, Dana Dobson and High Priest and Prophet, Ken Neusch look particularly excited with the work they will do in this new year. Ill. Sir George Mather is just grinning away, wanting to get 2016 going, while Chief Rabban, Randy Peters and Assistant Rabban, JC Reece appear ready to assist wherever needed. Looks to be a good 2016 for El Zaribah Shrine!

El Zaribah’s History

(researched by Krista Harmsworth, Arabian Tales Staff)

The first meeting was held in an Episcopal Church in Phoenix where members from California instituted El Zaribah. Apparently, the banquet was a “queer event”. The San Fransisco Call in 1896 and the Arizona Republican in 1916 ran articles about how El Zaribah got its start. Readable sizes of these articles are available on page 15.

Shriners on the Go in San Diego

Al Bahr Shriners in San Diego had their Potentate’s Ball January 30th. Chief Rabban, Randy Peters and Lady Cindy, with Assistant Rabban, JC Reese, plus Mark and Cindy Lueck, Lady Jean Glover, and Bill McLemore joined Ill. Sir Dave Pirie and Lady Liza (on the left), plus Imperial Sir Ed Stolze (on the right) for a beautiful evening in ‘Ol Town. The next day, at the Potentate’s Ball, Lady Jean Glover was caught dancing with Imp. Sir Ed Stolze. You can see they were having a great time! The last photo of Imp. Sir Ed needs a caption; what do you think it should be?? When you are “out and about” please remember to share your photos! Send your photos and 100 word story about your photos to arabian.tales@el-zaribah.org

DIVAN NEWS

Note from the Pote...

Nobles and Ladies, January was quite a trip for Lady Dorothy and me along with all the Divan and Staff attending the various functions. Mobile Nobles, Greeters, Provost, Temple Guard and Apache Wells Shrine Club had their Official Visitations. Each event was well attended and the Clubs and Units were very generous to the General Fund, Transportation Fund, the Potentate’s Discretionary Fund. In addition, Lady Dorothy’s project faired very well. We also kicked off the Parade season in Buckeye. We have had a very busy February attending Job’s Daughter Supreme functions, the Laveen Parade, and Super Bowl Party. What a coincidence, that our February Stated Meeting was held 120 years to the date of our first ever Stated Meeting on February 10, 1896! We also made a trip to Yuma for the Yuma

Shrine Club and Yuma Foothills Shrine Club Official Visitation and the Silver Spur Parade with visiting Al Bahr Shrine joining in the fun and providing a chicken lunch after the Parade. March will be a very busy month: • March 4 - Bash Before the Ball • March 5 - Chandler Parade and Potentate’s Ball • March 18 - St. Patrick’s Day Party • March 19 - Anything Goes at Hale Theater and Big Night • March 22 - AWSC Pitchfork Fondue • March 26 - Ahwatukee Parade and Director’s Staff Steak Fry • March 27 - Easter Sunday Brunch Let all your family, friends, Shriners, and Masons you know what is happening at and around El Zaribah Shrine! On May 21, 2016, we are having the Monty Fox Ceremonial in conjunction with our continued 120th year celebration. Let all your Masonic Brothers know they can participate in a very special Ceremonial

for $120.00. The $120 includes their Dues, Fez, and fees for 2016. This is normally $358.00. The flyer and official application are available in the office, Red Fez Room, and in this edition of the Arabian Tales. On behalf of your Divan, we thank each and every member for your support and encourage all to attend our events. Many Clubs and Units are getting Fraternal fund raisers to help support their Club or Unit and the General Fund. We all can help them by reaching out to the general public for their support of what we do and look for good men to become Masons and find good Masons to become part of our Shrine Family. Each of us can make a difference. WE PUT CHILDREN FIRST

2016 Goals for All...

Attend Lodge regularly. Attend Shrine regularly. Look for good men to become Masons. Look for good Masons to become Shriners. We all can make a difference.

Casting Call El Zaribah has a Great Tradition of putting on the best Ceremonies of most Temples. We not only have the 1st section, but also the Arch Degree, which is very unique. We have current open positions and are setting up backup players. We put on at least 2 Ceremonials a year and you have the opportunity to share the first impression of El Zaribah for our new Nobles and their families. Julius Horvath, 2nd Ceremonial Master (Arch Degree) and I are taking names of people who would like to be part of this proud team. Please contact us and become involved. YUMA PARADE and OVs The trip to Yuma for the Silver Spur Parade, plus Yuma and Yuma Foothills Shrine Clubs Official Visits always make for a fun trip every year. Several of the Shrine units and clubs who attended are shown in this collection of photos. The Drum and Bugle Corps never misses an opportunity to play a few songs. The Greeters with their “hearse”, plus the Patrol and Legion of Honor doing their thing in the Parade. The Potentate and the Presidents of the Shrine Clubs shared gifts and 1st Lady Dorothy is shown receiving one of her gifts. Hospitality Chairman, Ron Miller appears to be instructing 1st Lady Dorothy on how to cut the cake, but we know he wouldn’t do that… Right?

Nobles: It is that time of year to review the process to assist a child in getting into the Shriners Hospitals for Children® system and Imperial has made it even easier. Everyone should know that there is no longer a complicated written application process, all is done by telephone. Here is where things have become so much easier. Hopefully, everyone has received his new 2016 Dues Card which is now made of plastic. Look at the back of your 2016 Dues Card, there you will find all the necessary information to refer a patient. The phone numbers listed are the universal numbers, but you can find hospital specific phone numbers by going to the website listed, hit the “refer” button at the top right of the home page and all of the hospitals will come up. Remember that we primarily send our patients to the Los Angeles and Salt Lake Hospitals, so you should give those numbers first. The four major disciplines that our hospitals treat are orthopedics, cleft lip and palate, spinal cord injuries and burns. The best advice that I can give you is if you see a potential patient and you are not sure whether our hospitals treat the condition, still give the family the phone number and have them call. I’m constantly amazed at things our hospitals treat that I didn’t know about. All it takes is a phone call. Finally, you can always have the family call Eneida and me in the hospital office. Our phone number is 602-231-0188. Fraternally, Jim Miller, PP Hospital Chairman

UNIT and CLUB REPORTS Culinary Unit

Ken Conner, Scribe until relieved. The one with the Clean Apron. Hello, Again!! The Culinary unit wishes to thank all who helped with the CIF BBQ, both in prepping the meat on Saturday and cutting it up Sunday morning before the event. We really appreciate your help and time spent in furthering the event. The Saturday before, some of the Culinary Unit split wood for the fire. It is always nice to see such good help show to advance the Temple’s funding raising for the Capital Improvement Fund. If you have a good tree that is cut up and aged suitable for the BBQ pit, please let Mike Fenno know so he can arrange for you to deliver it to the Shrine Temple for next year’s BBQ fire. Did you understand that you will have to arrange to have it delivered? There is a limit to what we do besides spilling beans.

Greeters Unit

On January 22nd, the Greeters of El Zaribah Shrine held their 2nd annual Crab Feed and a fun time was had by all. Fresh crab was flown in from the northwest, arriving just hours prior to the dinner and the timing for delivery was so close that I had Pizza Hut set up on my speed dial in anticipation of having our crab feed turn into a pizza feed. Several door prizes were provided by local vendors, such as a gift basket of Pepperidge Farms Goodies provided by Gregg Stultz, a gift basket of flavored vodkas provided by Bashas’, and a gift basket provided by Terra Travel Agency. One of the best things about participating in events such as these is the opportunity to meet friends and families of fellow club members. The only down side was the lack of time to spend with the family and friends that purchased tickets and supported the event. For those of you who attended the event, the Greeters sincerely thank you for your support. Please remember us next year when we host our 3rd annual crab feed and please spread the word that good crab can be found in Phoenix even though we are hours away from the ocean.

Mounted Patrol Unit

The Unit Head Meeting this past week was late because of the singers needing to practice prior to the meeting. At the meeting they said they could practice earlier if it was alright for them to eat during the meeting. To avoid the disturbance of clearing the serving line during the meeting we will need advance notice of how many singers will be eating so we can prep their plates in advance. Sorry, but we don’t want to work all night, especially since we are now paying for our dinners as you are. We may eat early but that is just to protect you as the food tasters did for the Royalty in the days of old. We never know when Fernando may take out his frustrations on the food prep! We meet on the THIRD Tuesday of the month in the Red Fez Room. Please join us at 5:30 for dinner, at your expense, then our meeting following. The culinary is the only unit where the members get to meet ALL of the Nobles of the temple on a regular basis. That was a shameless plug for new members. This past Unit Head Meeting we also got to watch member Dave bounce tomatoes across the table in preparation for an upcoming ping pong match and Mike try to float lettuce leaves on the air currents. It’s never boring behind the line.

El Dulabs Unit

The El Dulabs has the honor of driving the Divan in Parades. We also offer rides to nobles who would like to participate in parades but are not in a unit or cannot walk in the parade. If you have a classic, rare, or antique car or truck or just love automobiles and like to have fun, then this is the unit for you. You do not have to own a vehicle to belong. The Unit meets the 3rd Wednesday of each month at 7:00PM at the Temple in the El Dulab Room. For more information, contact President, Joe Newby at 602-573-3321 or Vice President, Rick Fasano at 623-414-0990.

Howdy Y’all, Hope this finds you and yours doing very well and happy. Your friendly Horse folks are doing right well so far. We had the pleasure of riding in the Wickenburg Parade and it was fantastic. We had five riders and two on the ground crew, to make it a pleasant ride, and then afterwards we had a nice lunch in New River. It is good to see the guys coming together for the events, and hopefully it will only get better as the year progresses. Of course we have our other activities cooking and hope you all can attend things like the BIG NIGHT on March 19 and The Spring Round Up gathering at the beautiful EZ Ranch. We will try to have more. Please come join us. We are also planning on having another Mounted Patrol Breakfast like we use to have. The date will be announced soon, and anyone is welcome to come chow down with us. Until we get together, try to get behind our great Divan and attend any and all the functions you can. They work hard and they need us to pitch in just a little, when and where we can. That is what makes our organization so great. We look forward to seeing you soon. Until then, take care and Vaya Con Dios.

Apache WelLs

On March 5th from 8AM till 1PM, the annual Apache Wells Flea Market will be held in the Apache Wells Country Club Parking Lot. The shrine club will have a stall, and donations of salable goods are certainly welcome and needed. So give up your tired, unwanted, but sellable, items around the house and then come on down and buy all the good stuff you can’t live without. For pickup of sellable items you wish to donate, call Harry Lipert 480807-1195 or Jerry Dunn 480-361-5784. Also from 7AM till 9AM coffee, donuts, brats will be on sale in the Quilters Room. From 9AM till 1PM burgers will be on sale in the Gazebo. Flea Market funds support the operation of the mini cars used by the club in parades. On March 10th, the business meeting and luncheon will be held in Apache Wells Country Club Hall. Social time starts at 12:30 PM and the

business meeting and lunch at 1PM. On March 22nd, we will hold the 7th annual Pitchfork Fondue at the Apache Wells Gazebo Room from 4 PM until 8PM. It is open to the public and is intended as a money maker to support the Shrine Hospitals Children Transportation Fund. As a heads up, in April the business meeting and luncheon will be held at Apache Wells Country club Hall on the 14th. A Steak Fry will be held in the Gazebo on the 21st starting at 5 PM Jack Roberts- Club Scribe

Drum & Bugle Corps

The Drum and Bugle Corps performed in Yuma at the Silver Spur weekend and Potentate’s Official Visit of the Yuma and Yuma Foothills Shrine Clubs. We started by entertaining the Nobles and Ladies at the OV Friday night, February 12. Then we were able to perform after the Parade on Saturday for the crowd around the Hospitality Suite. The Drum & Bugle Corps will be performing during the CIF BBQ on February 28. Hopefully you will be able to see us there and enjoy listening to the numbers. We continue our weekly practice sessions every Tuesday evening at 5:30 PM in the Band Room. Feel free to drop by and look us over any time you can. Alto Bugle

Mobile Nobles

Mobile Nobles held their Official Visit on Jan. 10th at the Venture Out Resort. Potentate George Mather and Lady Dorothy, Chief of Staff Jim Hoover and Lady Kay joined us for a great meal and enjoyable music. All in attendance had a good time. Thank you to everyone who helped make this a very pleasant and memorable evening, another success for the children. Meanwhile, the Nobles are busy with the aluminum project in support of the Shriners Hospitals for Children.

Provost

Greetings Provost-men Thanks to the members of the Provost Club for electing me as Captain for 2016 and it gives me great pleasure to take over the reins of the Provost Club as many Captains have done before me. We started off the year with the combined Provost, Temple Guard and Greeters OV on January 19th with a good turn out by all. Thanks to all the members who have worked for the January and February functions and we look forward to working the Bash before the Ball and the Pote’s Ball this month, plus increased rentals to make this a successful year for El Zaribah Shrine. The Provost Club motto is “Protecting and Serving the Shrine” and our mission is to provide security at all Temple events and assist the Potentate as needed” We meet on the 2nd Tuesday of the month with dinner and fellowship at 5:30 and the meeting starting at 6:30. Come join us if you are interested in working security for the Shrine. Please contact Capt Jim Leppert (623-516-9363) or email at chijimbo14@q.com. The uniforms are supplied by the club and you will be working with experienced officers. I am sure that you will find your participation rewarding. Capt. Jim Leppert

The Grand Master’s Class is like the Shrine’s Ceremonial where the DeMolay will conduct the ritual degrees upon the new members of the State from the various chapters. If you have never seen this Ritual, you are in for a treat because this is ritual at its best from these young men especially as they perform the DeMolay Degree which is a play of the representation of the last acts of Jacque DeMolay. All Masons and any persons above the age of 21 are welcome to attend. The date is March 12, 2016, and check in is at It has been my privilege and pleasure to serve as reigning queen this past year. My love and devotion for the Children in our Shriners Hospitals will never end as I am so blessed to belong to such a wonderful organization as the Daughters of the Nile. We are looking forward to the Installation of Officers on April 3rd at 2:00 in the El Zaribah Auditorium.

Masonic Youth Club

The Masonic Youth Club is a Shrine Club where Shriners, Masons, and others with similar interests get together to discuss how to help El Zaribah Shrine, Job’s Daughters, DeMolay, and Rainbow Girls work together to better work together to better understanding the needs of each other’s organizations and to attend and help each other’s organizations at their events. As our youth groups grow, so too do our adult groups, so please come to one of our meetings which is held the 3rd Wednesday of each month at the Temple in the Red Fez Room at 6:00 PM. Working together we can all make a difference. For more information, contact: President, Alan Dye at 480-223-2914 or Vice President, Rick Fasano at 623-414-0990.

Chris, Illustrious Sir George, and the Divan for their support during the year. We have had several very successful fund raisers and had lots of fun working together to make them successful. We initiated over 20 new members this past year and they are getting very involved in our Units and in our court activities. Nobles of El Zaribah, how lucky we Ladies are that you support our activities and encourage our Ladies to support and help you with your activities. We enjoyed participating with you in several parades this year. Not all Shrine groups invite the ladies’ organizations to participate in their activities and lend their support to the ladies. We are truly fortunate. So I say, “Thank You, gentlemen.”

PArADE InFO

Once again, J C Reece and Randy Peters are working to get our newest Nobles introduced to our Shrine Family through our parades. New Nobles sign up for the El Zaribah WebNet Google Group (left side of el-zaribah.org) for event notification. When the new Nobles are available, they contact the Assistant Rabban or High Priest & Prophet. All who can help us out, are assigned to a Unit or Club for that parade/ event. If you are a new Noble to El Zaribah, and would like to help us out and allow our Units and Clubs to utilize all of their parade equipment, cars, animals, etc. please contact J C Reece (Assistant Rabban) 602531-6545 or Randy Peters (Chief Rabban) 480-296-3957.

Keep your Email Address up-to-date! If you want to receive mailings via email, send an email to Arabian.Tales@el-zaribah.org . Please make sure to include your name as a part of the email message, so we know who we are contacting. You will then be added to the El Zaribah online NewsWeb as well as any electronic mailings.

Show your support! Arizona has MASONIC license plates!
