MESSAGE FROM THE POTENTATE Illustrious Sir, Chris Hagenian

Welcome

Back Nobles and Ladies! I hope you had a fantastic summer and are ready to jump back in with both feet!! It has been quite an eventful summer for your El Zaribah Divan and their Ladies starting with the Imperial Session in Houston. If you have not heard, Illustrious Sir (Now Imperial Sir) Ed Stolze won the Election for Imperial Outer Guard and we now have one of El Zaribah’s own on the Imperial Divan! This is a great win for the West Coast and we all know Ed will do a fantastic job for Shrinedom. Projects around the temple are coming to a close as we have passed our fire inspection and code compliance improvements, the Century Link Fiber is installed and in the final testing phases, dance floors have been resurfaced, and fresh coats of paint applied to the walls. Please give the maintenance crew a good word when you see them around the temple. Please make plans to attend the September Stated Meeting, we will be giving a brief recap of the Imperial Legislation and have other items to vote on and updates to present. The Ladies’ Program will be BINGO!! Come out and have a good time and take home a prize!! Our membership goal this year is 62 new members and the Lake Havasu Ceremonial is fast approaching. Look around your Lodges and invite some deserving Brothers to come check us out in September and get to know the Shrine and what we do. With Hunters Paradise upstairs you have a great opportunity to introduce new members to our Fraternity; I am currently working on 4 new members for the Blue Lodge. It CAN be done and it TAKES ALL OF US to make this happen; focus your efforts on one new person a year whether it be in the Blue Lodge or Shrine, it’s the only way we can help sustain this fraternity for generations to come! Finally, Lady Mary and I have enjoyed the summer and the events that we were able to attend. We managed to sneak in a vacation with Illustrious Sirs and First Ladies Leo Balthazor & Bobbie, Russ & Barb Gunther, and Jim & Jackie Miller on the Post Imperial Session Cruise to Cozumel, Grand Cayman, and Jamaica. We had a fantastic time and although there’s no space in this issue for pictures, we will make sure you see all the fun in the October issue! Yours in the Faith, Chris

OFFICIAL CALL OF THE POTENTATE: Nobility of El Zaribah MONTHLY STATED MEETING Wednesday, September 9, 2015 7:00 pm – El Zaribah Shrine Center For the Purpose of Old and New Business

Attest: Jack Garrett, PP, Recorder

We have current open positions and are setting up back up players. From the Desk of the Recorder If you'll notice the front cover of the May 2015 Arabian Tales, it shows Illustrious Sir Chris Hagenian sitting on a trike. (Question is why was he sitting on a trike since he rides a Harley Davidson Motorcycle?) I heard a rumor that he was trying to up-grade to a three wheel trike but our by-laws require a member to be six (6) feet tall. All the best to you, Illustrious Sir, we might consider changing our by-laws. For the record, I'm just joking. I didn't give permission for Chris to sit on my trike. Jack Garrett, P.P. Recorder 5

From the Hospital Chairman

Nobles: For the past few years we received some fairly significant donations to the Transportation Fund after the last article was written prior to the summer break. These groups never get recognized when we come back from the summer break. I want to identify these groups – the Motorcycle Unit for their Bowling Palooza and the Apache Wells Shrine Club for their spring golf tournament and all of the Nobles and Ladies that helped to make these events such a large success. These two events generated over $30,000 for the Transportation Fund and significantly helps us to meet our patients’ transportation needs. Please take a few moments and review the list of all those who have donated to not only the Hospital Patient Transportation Fund, but also to Shriners Hospitals for Children and El Zaribah Fraternal Donations. I have the privilege of putting these lists together every month and I can honestly say that I’m humbled by the generosity of so many individuals in supporting our great fraternity and philanthropy. We should all consider ourselves so very fortunate to be able to associate with such generous people. It is all of our responsibility to continue to support our fraternity and our philanthropy so that children will be helped many years into the future. Fraternally, Jim Miller, PP SE A E Hospital Chairman L P

HISTORY: Travel to Imperial by, Krista Harmsworth, Arabian Tales Staff

In July, many Shriners congregated in Houston, Texas to conduct the business of the Imperial Shrine. As a part of El Zaribah’s history, I thought it would be nice to pay homage to how members of El Zaribah *used* to fundraise to attend Imperial.

All of these advertisements and the article were printed in the Arizona Republican newspaper on 12/28/1919 (large ad), 1/1/1920 (article), and 1/2/1920 (small ad). Next issue (October) will be devoted to the Ceremonial, with a special historical find of, “I am a Shriner”.

Congratulations to the Arabian Tales Staff for an Honorable Mention at the 2015 Dromedary Awards! We learned, while at Imperial, some of the Shrine Temples use large size magazine companies to put their magazines together for copywriting, editing, and publishing. Great job, TEAM!

CIRCUS BIKES

We would like to thank the units & clubs listed here who helped to purchase the bikes that we will be giving away at the circus this year. A special thanks to Jim Pitts of the transportation unit who purchased the bikes from Luke Air Force Base. Jim spent a lot of time to put all this together. Greeters

The Greeters were busy this summer supporting the parades inYarnell, our Spring Ceremonial, Prescott Valley and Payson. Some of us fled the valley heat to enjoy the Monsoon moisture in Munds Park for the Temple Guard Weekend. Many thanks to Lady Gerry Kesselring for her hospitality. The annual Corn Fest is a major fund raiser for El Zaribah and a few Greeters will provide assistance at the front door. We need to split up to support the parade in Payson on the same weekend. We’re all looking forward to the Circus in September. Many thanks to Chuck Richards for keeping our Limo parade ready. Our CrabFeed is scheduled for Friday, January 22. The good news is tickets will be available through the Shrine On-Line Store. We will be limited to 200 tickets so plan to get yours early. The bad news is our supplier in Oregon predicts the price to increase nearly two dollars per pound due to an expected decrease in mature crabs this season. Like the Marines, we’re always looking for a few good men. We meet the third Monday of each month at the El Zaribah Shrine Center. Join us at 5:30 PM for libations and dinner. Mounted Patrol

Howdy Y’all, I hope this finds you and yours doing well. We are looking forward to a busy fall and winter. Captain Lucky and his crew are trying to figure out ways to generate more enthusiasm and attendance. Lots of good things planned for the Temple and of course we are planning the Circus. Next year we will be hosting the Big Nite on March 19, 2016. We hope to see you there. If you are interested in joining us, see Doug Kurbat or me about reserving a seat for you and your guest. Please try to attend functions and meetings as we need to build our membership back. I look forward to seeing you often. Vaya Con Dios, Nate

Temple Guard

The summer is flying by and we will soon be back with all the activities of the fall. We had a very good turnout at the Munds Park weekend. There were some sprinkles of rain on Friday evening and Saturday was more of a good steady rain. Many thanks to Jasper for bringing up the canopies, chairs, tables, steaks and the liquid refreshments. We also want to thank our gracious hostess, Gerry Kesselring, for the use of her place. It is such a great place for a party! Past Captain Lee Jarolimek was fantastic at the grill both days. I heard nothing but good comments on the steaks. Thanks also to everyone for the delicious food they shared! I would be remiss in not thanking all the folks who helped with the setup and teardown of the canopies, tables and chairs, you all were awesome. What a fun weekend! Help is needed for the CornFest on August 22nd/23rd at 7AM to shuck the corn and also for the Shrine Circus, September 11-13. We invite all Shriners to come join us for our monthly stated meetings on the third Thursday of every month. We’ll even buy dinner for first time visitors! Capt. Jim 02/15 21

Drum and Bugle Corps

Oriental Band

Welcome back from the summer vacations! The Drum & Bugle Corps took three months off this summer from all meetings and practices. The time off allowed us all to recharge and then come back together and start right back up in August. We will perform both days at the Cornfest in late August. We hope you will be able to see us one or both of the days. It looks like we will have a good turnout of our members and will play some numbers that we don’t often get the opportunity to perform. The Cornfest is always one of our favorite events to play for due to the great crowds. The Drum & Bugle Corps plans to be active in the 2nd half of this year. We will be at the Circus in September for the Saturday performance at 3 pm. Then the month of October will bring the Shrine Ceremonial in Lake Havasu City. As usual, we will be performing multiple times throughout that weekend. We hope to be able to liven up the Hospitality area on Friday and then

Greetings from the Oriental Band. We have been dark this summer since June 1st; however, we have been busy doing some things this year so far. We are a small unit made up of four nobles at this time, and we still have a lot of fun trying to entertain people in parades and other events. We practice on Tuesday nights at the Temple at 7:30 PM in the band room. Come out and listen to us and enjoy a good time. Our President and musette player, got a 1st Place award in the band competition at the W.S.A. in Las Vegas. He also played for the El Bekal Temple Ceremonial. Bass Drummer

Daughters of the Nile

The 99th Supreme Session for the Daughters of the Nile, held in Albuquerque, NM, was a big success. A proud moment during our Daughters of the Nile Supreme Session was the presentation of a check for the amount of $2.7 million, making our donations to the Shriners Hospitals over $3 million dollars this year. Congratulations to our new Supreme Appointments: Past Supreme Queen, Donna F. Clark, the Jurisprudence Committee; PQ Bobbie Balthazor, Supreme Attendant; PQ Betty Ann Stockton, Goodwill Ambassador to the Pacific and Mountain Areas; and PQ Doris Corwin, Escort to the American Flag. I hope everyone had a wonderful, fun summer, and stayed relatively cool. The members of LOS enjoyed the CornFest weekend and are ready to help with the Shrine Circus in September. On August 30 we will have a Membership Tea. Come down to the Shrine at 2:00 and learn more about us. We hope to have a nice class at our October Ceremonial. Also, in October, we are looking forward to a fun trip to Sacramento, CA to attend the Western Area Organized Unit Meet (WAOUM). There will be quite a few of our members attending, and the Sacramento Court has planned some very fun, interesting activities and tours for us. We are looking forward to a great weekend.
