MESSAGE FROM THE POTENTATE Illustrious Sir, Gerry Massey

Welcome

Back, Nobles and Ladies! It’s been a great summer and we hope you enjoyed your traveling and relaxation time! Believe it or not, Shrine season is upon us again and we will be hitting the ground running! This year, we have decided to try something slightly different and send out this edition of the Tales in mid-August. We have so much going on during the last weeks of August and beginning of September, we just did not want anyone to miss out on all the Shrine Family Fun! We had an amazing turnout in Minneapolis for Imperial Session. We worked hard, but played just as hard (if not harder!). We will have a re-cap of the legislation at the Unit and Club Leadership Meeting and the September Stated Meeting. There was not much earth shattering news in any of the legislation, but we do want to keep you informed. We had about 40 Nobles and their Ladies for dinner on Sunday night at Buca Di Beppo! The family style dinner was great and the dessert was so amazing that some of it was served on plates the size of small surf-boards! Bob Beffel represented El Zaribah by entering and competing in the Oriental Band Competition and WON 1ST PLACE! When you see Bob, be sure to congratulate him! I was even asked to announce the Imperial Parade. I must have done something right, because the Imperial Officers have asked me to continue and announce next year’s parade in Houston, TX as well! What a great honor for me and an awesome way for El Zaribah to be showcased at the Imperial level! Speaking of showcasing at the Imperial level, Ill Sir Ed Stolze has announced his candidacy for the position of Imperial Outer Guard and will be a great representative, not only of El Zaribah, but all of Western Shrine Association and Shrinedom in general. There will be informational updates in the near future, so stay tuned for e-mail blasts and articles in future Tales. Lady Janet and I are looking forward to seeing each of you at the upcoming events in the next few months! Please stay safe, we want to see you at ALL the events! Yours in the Faith, Gerry

Life is a blend of Love and Friendship, but Love is always stronger. Love lives on forever. Thanks for the many prayers, gifts, cards, and for attending the memorial of my husband. We all know how proud he was to wear his Fez as a Shriner, and especially as Potentate and Past Potentate. How blessed to have all of you in our heart. As you all know, the Shrine Family was special to all of us during Larry’s life on earth and will remain special to the Kesselring Family. Thanks from the bottom of my heart. May God’s Angels protect all of you. Gerry Kesselring, Lady of Past Potentate, Larry Kesselring 3

Our Chaplain, Fred Wulff, thought the message in this prayer would be very appropriate to publish in the Arabian Tales to remind us why we belong to the Shrine fraternity. A Shriner's Prayer

And thank you for the chance to be, The kind of man you ask of me. To take the test and hold the weight, Yet stand so tall and walk so straight.

Dear God, give strength for me to do, The kind of job you want me to. We need your help so we might hold, All the children in our fold.

And when we bid this life farewell, And the golden scrolls of our life tell Let the trumpets in the heavens sound, That we've not let "Our" children down.'

Some are crippled, some are burned, Help us that we may learn. The work that we must do today, To never turn a child away.

AMEN

I could not bear to see their tears, And hold their memory through the years. If but one child needed our help so, And we must tell this small child "No". 5

365 Pay-It-Forward Program The Program is Quite Simple...

Nobles, in January we announced the start of a program where a noble could pay their dues forward for the following year and also contribute to the following years general fund. We feel this is a very promising program for the future of your Shrine at El Zaribah. El Zaribah is YOUR Shrine and if we do not take care of El Zaribah Shriners who will take care of our Shrine Children in the future here in Arizona. We are looking in to means for you to sign up and have $20 a month charged to a credit or debit card and also a program where you can send us a check every month to become a member of the 365 Pay It Forward Team. If every member of El Zaribah would bring in a new member into El Zaribah in the next two years many of our general fund situation would be resolved. Many of you remember when we were 6000+ members strong. The 365PIFT members who signed up this year will receive their dues cards for 2015 in October and November with a thank you from El Zaribah. The balance of their contributions for the 2015 general fund will be presented to the Recorder in January of 2015. Please take time to consider the 365 Pay It Forward Team program. You and El Zaribah will both benefit from your participation. We will work with each of you to provide the best way for you to participate. Please contact the Assistant Rabban or Treasurer for information and answers to your questions. Thank you.

THANKS FOR CARING ABOUT THE SHRINE! 6

Tree Trimming

Even though the Auditorium goes "dark" during the summer, our boys (Arturo, Fernando, Juan, & Miguel) keep on working! After a Spring with more wind than we are used to seeing all year long and on two record-setting hot days, they were outside trimming trees to remove dead branches to keep us all safe.

The next time you are visiting the Shrine, notice how wonderful the building looks. If you see Arturo, Fernando, Juan, or Miguel, please take a moment to thank them for all their hard work.

Nobles: I had the privilege of being invited to one of our patient’s High School Graduation Cello Recital over the summer. Noble Doug “BB” Fry was also there since he was the Shrine sponsor for Marcie into the Shrine program. This was the first time that Marcie could perform since being treated by Shriners Hospitals for Children. To give you some background, Marcie had developed severe pain that prevented her from being able to play her cello and her family sought help from Shriners Hospitals for Children. Dr. Cho out of our LA Hospital accurately diagnosed the problem and Marcie started treatment that took well over a year. Slowly, she was allowed to return to playing her cello which she deeply loves. To say that Marcie’s recital was good would be a huge understatement, her recital was incredible. To sit there in the audience and listen to her beautiful music brought tears to my eyes. To think that if Dr. Cho had not accurately diagnosed and treated her symptoms and she wouldn’t have had the dedication to follow the treatment regimen; her music would have been lost to the world forever and that would have been a great tragedy. Marcie is planning to go onto college where she will continue to perform her music. She is a very courageous young lady and an incredible talent. We should all take pride in being a small part in preserving this amazing talent. Fraternally, Jim Miller, PP Hospital Chairman

The Shrine Circus is Coming!

One of our major events each year is the Shrine Circus. This year the circus will again be at WestWorld in Scottsdale the weekend of September 12th, 13th and 14th. Just over one year ago, WestWorld completed their major renovation of the Equidome that El Zaribah Shrine uses for the circus. For El Zaribah, these renovations have created a great environment. The Circus is now air conditioned, with great lighting and parking. With these changes and good advertising the crowds were great in 2013; playing to a packed house for almost every performance. The best part of the entire experience of last year is that you can do it again in 2014. For 2014, The Jody Jordon Circus from Las Vegas is coming back. The plan, like the last few years, is to have a single evening performance on Friday, followed by three performances on Saturday and three on Sunday. The afternoon performance on Saturday is when there is a “Grand Entry” of Shrine Units and Clubs. It is always a great way for the kids to see some of the fun things that Shriners ride and do in the parades we attend across Arizona. 12

For some, a concern is parking. For the circus, parking is right at the door and there is plenty of it! For those who have trouble walking, the Shriners also have golf carts to pick you up at your vehicle and deliver you and your friends and family to the door. For those who drive the golf carts, this is a great way to share the circus fun with you and the kids. Speaking of kids, each child who comes to the circus gets a ticket for a chance to win a bicycle. At each performance, a boy’s and a girl’s bicycle is given away during the intermission of the performance. The excitement and smiles these bikes create are very hard to beat! These bicycles are donated by Shrine Units and Clubs and the Shrine Clowns do the presentation. ALL Tickets are $18.00 each (Military and Seniors $15 each). There are FREE kids coupons at various participating merchants, note certain restrictions apply. Tickets are available at the gate for every performance, with tickets going on sale one hour before each performance. Tickets are on sale at all Safeway Stores one month prior to the Circus dates. Once the circus leaves Scottsdale it travels across Arizona to share the circus with other cities.

Other dates and locations for the Shrine Circus performances: Flagstaff - 9/11 | Buckeye - 9/15 | Yuma - 9/16 Lake Havasu - 9/17 | Bullhead City - 9/18 Prescott Valley – 9/19 & 20 (See local advertising for location, times, and ticket pricing.) 13

year, J C Reece and Randy Peters have been working to get our newest Nobles introduced to our Shrine Family through our parades. We have made contact with all the parade Units and Clubs who occasionally have trouble getting members to attend parades. Because of attendance, many Units and Clubs have little cars that do not get driven. Members who could be marching or playing an instrument are instead driving a truck that pulls a trailer. In some instances, nobody has been there to handle the camels so they have had to stay home. These are a few examples of problems we have had. We are now in contact with the parade groups to find out if they have cars that will not be driven, trucks that pull trailers that need a driver, help with camels, etc. Then, we contact the new Nobles. We also ask all new Nobles to sign up for the El Zaribah WebNet Google Group (left side of el-zaribah. org) for event notification. When they are available they need to contact the Oriental Guide or the High Priest & Prophet. All who can help us out, are assigned to a Unit or Club. This has been working since the Tempe Veteran’s Day parade last November. We have had up to 6 empty parade positions in the past few months that we have filled with new Nobles. It is working well. We not only help the Unit or Club get a full roster, but the new Nobles meet and get to know many of the Nobles in the Units and Clubs. This is not a recruiting tool, but a way for new Nobles to get an idea of what each CITY DATE LINE-UP START group is about and help utilize our parade attractions. A Note from the Grand Master of AZ

In July, Lady Maggie and I had the honor & pleasure of attending The Imperial Shrine Session in Minneapolis. It is a very impressive event and we were able to mix & mingle with hundreds of wonderful people. And, by the way... Our Past Pote, Ed, made a good showing on his first run at the Imperial Line. When I was maybe ten or eleven years old, The Imperial Session was held in Springfield Illinois, just twenty miles north of our home town. My Dad was a member of Ansar Temple in Springfield which gave him the opportunity to take the whole family up there and attend the special entertainment event. The star of the evening was, none other than, Roy Rogers with his travelling Western Road Show. It was held in the Shrine Auditorium there in Springfield. I don’t know how many were in that arena, but to a kid my age, it looked like millions. I had never been in a place that big with so many people. Of course, the spotlight was on Brother Roy most of the time; but when he asked for the house lights to be turned up. OH MY... Everywhere we looked was a gleaming jeweled fez. Serious memories are made of this!!! I still have my Dad’s fez, and my Grandpa’s too. I’ve always been tempted to wear one of them to a stated meeting. I don’t want to take up too much space here, so I’ll close with a request: Our Grand Lodge Officers have asked several Lodges around the state to host Town Hall Meetings. It’s where every Mason can meet with the Grand Line, ask us questions, give us your input and advice and cover issues that are frequently covered in your individual Lodges but perhaps not reconciled to your satisfaction. We have one of these Town Halls coming up right in the El Zaribah Temple, hosted by Hunter’s Paradise, on Sept. 24 starting at 1800 hours (that’s 6 PM for all you wealthy guys). Hope to see you there, and may The Great Architect always watch over you. Fraternally, Mike Manning Grand Master 20

CornFest and Arts & Crafts Show August 23rd & 24th 10 am to 4 pm The word “CornFest” is a word created right here at El Zaribah Shrine! When this early fall event was first organized by Past Potentate Chuck Krebs and his friend Vince Castronovo, they were looking to create an event to get Shriners back into the swing of things after the long summer break. They decided to create a corn-on-the-cob feed with a hamburger or hot dog, beans, and a drink. The Arts and Craft Festival booths were added to help encourage members to bring their friends and family down for the event. The name “CornFest” was coined from there. Each year the CornFest gets stronger and 23 years later, the event continues… Shriners can be found out back shucking ears of corn and having fun the way that Shriners like to have fun; working hard to support their Shrine Center. The stacks of cases of corn take time to shuck but that just means more time joking around and enjoying being back together. Today’s CornFest still has the same feeling of the original event. After a few years, the ladies decided to add the 50/50 drawings and doing this just added to the success and fun of the “CornFest”. The best part about the CornFest is that the event is FREE! Don’t forget, there are Clowns and lots of other Shriners around 22

doing what they do best; having a lot of fun! Friends stroll through the booths, visiting with friends they haven’t seen for several months, as well as catching up on the family, jobs, and fun that was had over the summer. People break away from the booths to sit down with an ear of corn and their choice of a hamburger or hot dog. The menu is a simple, but delicious, meal of HOT Sweet Corn on the Cob with a Hamburger or Hot Dog, plus Beans. But that is what CornFest is all about... having fun and eating CORN!! You can buy the Sweet Corn to take home as well; $5 for 1/2 doz., $10 for a Baker’s dozen. The Arts & Crafts Festival has over 60 Vendors on-site in comfortable air conditioning. There are Clowns for the Kids - Face painting, Balloon animals, and more! So, you say you haven’t been to the CornFest in a while. Well, might we suggest you come down and join us! Gather up your extended family and friends and treat them to a great lunch and lots of old fashioned Shrine fun!!

The El Zaribah Shrine 4th Annual Cigar Night Benefit Dinner and Auction Saturday, September 6, 2014 El Zaribah Shrine Red Fez and Fiesta Rooms 552 N. 40th Street Phoenix, AZ 85008 Ph: 602-231-0300

As the World becomes more health conscious activities for those who like to smoke have fewer and fewer opportunities to just enjoy smoking with a fine dinner. These thoughts are what brought about the Cigar Night event. Past Potentate the Honorable Hut Hutson and a few close friends came up with the idea of an evening of good food, wine or other drinks, plus a gift bag of cigars and other items a smoker would enjoy. Those who attended in the past enjoyed themselves. Tables are set for 6 people. There are activities and just a lot of fun and overall a good time. Relaxing with friends, what could be better. The words that come to mind are “It doesn’t get much better.” After Introductions, the evening goes on to dinner. It is difficult to describe the fine food, so the best way to tell the story is to just report that the food will please your palette and is prepared by a European trained Executive Chef!

Tickets * Limited to 100 seats * $99.00 each, or $150.00 Husband & Lady, or $500.00 for a table of 6. * Available at www.el-zaribah.org/ cigar-night or call 602-231-0300
