MESSAGE FROM THE POTENTATE Illustrious Sir, Gerry Massey

It

seems like just yesterday I was taking my oath of office as Oriental Guide and afterwards I asked Ill Sir Jim Miller, the outgoing Potentate, if he had any advice for me. He thought for a second and said “Yes, there are two things. First, always do what is best for El Zaribah, the Shrine Hospitals and our Shrine Children. Second, enjoy every minute of the next five years, it’s a heck of a ride.” Boy-oh-boy, was he right! What a ride it has been so far. I have learned so much from each of you. I have had the distinct pleasure to work with, and be mentored by some of the finest men from around this great country. Many of them have also been Potentates of El Zaribah. Trust me, I have some very big shoes to fill. Several of these men have encouraged me to think like a Boy Scout and leave El Zaribah in better shape than when I took my oath of office. That will not be easy. Like I said, I have some big shoes to fill. Here are a few ideas of how we can accomplish this:

Over the years, we have had some great fundraisers that have generated a lot of money. Unfortunately lately, some of them have not been doing as well in sales as they have in the past. I know many of you love the Vidalia Onion program as it has become a staple at El Zaribah. However, in recent years, we have been having issues with bad crops and delivery dates getting pushed back. We’ve also had to compete with grocery stores selling them at half of what we sell them. Many of the Units and Clubs rely on this fundraiser for their budget. That is why this year we will be making the switch from Vidalia Onions to Pistachios. The program will stay the same for the Units and Clubs. El Zaribah will split the proceeds from the sale of each bag, just like we have done with onions in years past. More details will follow, but this does not have to be a 1-2 month blitz as with onions. This fundraiser can continue for the rest of the year! A second fundraiser is new and is called the “365-Pay It Forward” program. Your Assistant Rabban, George Mather unveiled it in December and the Nobility approved it in January. By making small monthly payments, this program will assist in paying your dues for the upcoming year and make a substantial donation to the General Fund, where funds are needed more than ever. Please see your Divan Representative or me for further details. This year, we have chosen the Phoenix for our bolo design. There are several reasons for this. First, El Zaribah is located in Phoenix, Arizona. Second, Lady Janet and I are both graduates of the University of Phoenix. Most importantly, the Phoenix is a well-known symbol of transformation and has the ability to rise again. We would like to believe that our lowest numbers of membership are behind us and like a Phoenix, are beginning to rise again. Many of our Shrine Children have gone thru traumas. Like the Phoenix, they are reborn with renewed purpose. Many of us have witnessed this transformation and the spirit these children have is amazing! We know they will rise up through adversity and soar again. Finally, Lady Janet and I would like to thank each of you for your continued support and for allowing us to serve as your Potentate and First Lady for 2014. We look forward to working with each of you over the next year. Remember to Honor, Respect, and Inspire others. (More on that next month…) Yours in the Faith, Gerry

MESSAGE FROM THE EDITOR of ARABIAN TALES Leo Balthazor, PP

Ill.

Sir Gerry Massey has given me several tasks for the year of 2014. Many are the same as in the past, i.e. El Zaribah webmaster, El-Zaribah.org website manager, WebNet, El Zaribah Shrine Calendar manager, the Arabian Tales Editor, and Dromedary Award submission coordinator. As you can see, my jobs focus on communications and we are planning a few changes to help each of you keep up to date. If you have an email and have not signed up for the WebNet, let me encourage you to do that. It is a great way to keep up to date on what is happening and learn of those in the Shrine family who are not doing so well. To sign up just contact me, my phone and e-mail address are at the top on the inside cover of Arabian Tales. We did introduce changes for the Samsar participation points, so if you are responsible for your unit or clubs to handle this task, please contact Ed Stolze or me to learn how you will work within the new process. By the way, your Arabian Tales article are due on the 1st of the month preceding the monthly issue into which you want to put your article. The deadline is the 10th of the month preceding the publication month. Try to keep your articles between 150 and 250 words. Something new we are starting with this month’s issue, is that you will find a little fez logo at the end of each article to let you, the reader, know the article is complete. We hope this will assist you while reading the Tales.

365 Pay-It-Forward Program The Program is Quite Simple... Nobles and Ladies, We are now enrolling many of you in the 365 Pay It Forward Team. Through your choice to join the team you are helping the future of the operations of El Zaribah Shriners and the work we do to serve our Hospitals and our Shrine Children. Donations from individuals and corporations to help the operations have been going down over the last several years. The other programs we have in place and the actual fund raising events we have do continue to help the operations on a yearly basis. What we have been missing is the additional contributions that have made the overall operations run smoothly. By choosing to enroll as a team member you are not only paying your dues forward for each year you are also giving an extra hand to El Zaribah Shriners. We have the proper accounts being set up and look forward to having you join the team. Please see the flyers and sign up information available in the Red Fez Room, in the Shrine Office or from any Divan member. The initial signup is open until February 28, 2014. If you choose to sign up after that date please contact either George Mather 480-254-5328 or Phil Houghton 480-395-5237. They will help you with the process.

Introducing Fezzy, the Love to the Rescue Ambassador

National American Teddy Bear Day (11/14/2013, Tampa. FL), Shriners Hospitals for Children® introduces Fezzy, its first Love to the rescue® Ambassador. Fezzy, who proudly wears the iconic Shriner red fez, has a mission to raise awareness and support for the innovative care available at Shriners Hospitals for Children. For more than 90 years, the 23 facilities of Shriners Hospitals for Children have transformed the lives of children around the world through innovative pediatric specialty care, world-class research, and outstanding medical education. Shriners Hospitals for Children provide all aspects of treatment, including surgery, rehabilitation and psychological support for children with orthopaedic conditions, spinal cord injuries, burns and cleft lip and palate. All care and services are provided regardless of the family’s ability to pay. “It was a natural fit for us to make our first Love to the rescue ambassador a teddy bear,” said John Cinotto, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Shriners Hospitals for Children. “Depending on the child’s needs, teddy bears can be used to teach young patients about upcoming medical procedures and outcomes, or may be given to patients to help ease the apprehension surrounding a hospital stay or surgery. All of these special touches help alleviate a child’s stress, which is an important part of the healing process.” To help Fezzy raise money to support Shriners Hospitals for Children, Vermont Teddy Bear is offering a 4 foot version of Fezzy for $99.99, with 20 percent of the proceeds to benefit Shriners Hospitals for Children. To purchase your own Fezzy, visit www.shrinershospitalsforchildren.org/ Fezzy. “Vermont Teddy Bear is proud to support Shriners Hospitals for Children by making Fezzy available,” said Bill Shouldice, CEO of Vermont Teddy Bear Company. “Our bears have brought a smile to our customers’ faces for more than 30 years now, but to know that Fezzy will help kids heal faster for years to come makes us smile even more.” About Shriners Hospitals for Children Shriners Hospitals for Children is changing lives every day through innovative pediatric specialty care, world-class research and outstanding medical education. Eddie

Warren refused to let a difficult situation keep him from following his pas-

sion. Eddie was born with two deformed legs that would prevent him from ever being able to walk. His great-grandmother suggested that Eddie and his mother, Wanda, visit Shriners Hospitals for Children® — Springfield because of the hospital’s expertise in prosthetics. Eddie and his mother met with David M. Drvaric, M.D., chief of staff at the hospital and were Eddie Warren takes in some kicking practice. At taken away by the personal care and attention they the Maine Shrine Bowl, he scored the longest extra point of any Maine Shrine Bowl game. received. “The environment at Shriners Hospital was truly incredible,” said Eddie’s mother “When you walk into the building, you get the feeling that everybody genuinely loves what they do.” When Eddie was 11 months old he had surgery to amputate both of his legs so he could be fitted for the prosthetics. Eddie always had a strong passion for sports, but was hesitant to participate in them. His mother inspired him to believe anything was achievable in life, which led Eddie to start playing football at the age of ten. It proved to be good advice. By his junior year at Sacopee Valley High School in Maine, Eddie played defensive end and kicker for the football team, shooting guard on the basketball team and was a first baseman and pitcher for the baseball team. All of Eddie’s teammates looked up to him because of the hard work and resilience he displayed every day in practice. In July of 2010, Eddie’s proudest moment occurred when he was selected to the Maine Shrine Lobster Bowl Classic to play the kicker position. The game not only features the best high school football players in the state of Maine, it also benefits Shriners Hospitals for Children®. Eddie would be playing for the same organization that helped make it possible for him to play the sport he loved. With five minutes left in the game, Eddie’s team scored a touchdown and he was brought in to kick an extra point to tie the score. Because of three straight penalties called on his team, the extra point would be kicked from 40 yards. Right before Eddie was about to kick the ball, the whole stadium began chanting “Eddie, Eddie, Eddie!” “The situation was so intense, I was practically brought to tears,” said Eddie. “I couldn’t even look after I kicked it. The football went through the uprights and the whole stadium erupted. According to Eddie, even the coach from the opposing team rooted for him. The kick would be one for the history books – it was the longest extra point in any Maine Shrine Lobster Bowl game. “The game wasn’t about winning or losing,” said Eddie. “It was about the kids and helping the organization that means everything to me.” Eddie, 19, currently plays on a semi-pro New England football team. In addition, after seeing first-hand as a patient the life-changing work Shriners do for children, Eddie plans on joining the fraternity along with his step-father. As for his future, Eddie plans on having a career in sports where he can inspire kids and let them know that despite obstacles, anything in life is possible. 10

Mexico City Hospital

Nobles,

I have now made 7 trips to Mexico City as a member of the Board of Governors for our hospital; Shriner’s Hospital para Niño’s. It gives me great pleasure to represent the Southwest and our great Temple while serving our cause at one of the highest levels. Many Nobles and ladies have asked me why we need representation in Mexico. The simple answer is that the demographic of our children practically mandates it. There is much happening in Mexico within the hospital system and great strides are being taken to expand care, decrease transportation miles, and shed some of the financial burden from Temples like El Zaribah that service many children from Mexico. The Mexico City hospital is constantly busy, from open to close every day. My first Board of Governors meeting was a profound experience as I entered the hospital, looked to my left, and saw over 300 people in the waiting room. This number did not include any patients that were already being seen or those in other areas of the hospital such as the courtyard. It’s amazing to see our hospital system work at such a high level of treatment and it really drives home what all the work we do for our philanthropy goes toward. Here are some rough numbers for the Mexico City hospital to help you better understanding the work they perform. In November they performed 420 surgeries, have a waiting list of new patients in excess of 2,000, surpassed 5,000 surgeries for the year, and began admitting new patients into the new burn ward. Mexico city has over 20,000 active patients. The management of the hospital operates the budget on two levels; they not only need to perform on budget to the peso, but also again the conversion to dollars. Even with these staggering numbers, Mexico City is one of the most financially prudent hospitals in our system. Nobles, should you ever feel the desire to serve on a hospital board, please seek out a Divan member or a current board member to find out what the obligation entails. Contrary to belief you do not need to be Divan member or a Past Potentate to serve on a hospital board. There is an election and qualification process you need to pass and, if interested, we can explain this process to you. Yours in the Faith, Chris Hagenian 11

A note from the Editor... Barbara Hineman has agreed to provide us with stories each month about some of our Shrine Kids. Here is another in her series.

December 8, 2013 Dear Shriners: On behalf of our daughter Valeria, I wanted to thank you for all the great work and service you have performed for children with orthopedic disabilities. Valeria was born with arthrogryposis in her lower extremities. The doctor who delivered Valeria strongly encouraged her mother to give her up since they lived in a very poor area in Russia and wouldn’t be able to take care of Valeria properly. Her mother signed her rights away before she left the hospital. Around the same time, we were moved to adopt a child who needed both help and a home and found our little Valeria by way of an agency that specialized in finding homes for disabled children from Eastern Europe. We thus adopted Valeria at 22 months of age in February 2005 from an orphanage for disabled children in Marks, Russia, where she had been her entire life. When we brought Valeria (Lera) home to Minnesota, we were put in contact with Shriners in Minneapolis where Dr. Mielke performed heel cord release surgery on Lera. They also fitted Lera with her first set of braces. Since then, Lera has had more surgeries at other hospitals and we have moved to Phoenix but have found the Shriners here to be every bit as caring as those in Minneapolis. We have now been to several of the Christmas parties at EI Zaribah including this weekend’s party. Lera gets so excited when we receive the invitation from you and counts down the days until the big event. This year, she wore a brand new dress she had saved for the party and proclaimed this year’s party was the “best ever!” Of course she says that every year when the party is over! When we got home from the party, Lera went straight to her room and put her gifts to good use (see enclosed picture). I wanted you to know that you are truly making a difference and our family is extremely thankful for all you do. Thank you again, David and Fami 13

From the Hospital Chairman

How does one even begin to show the gratitude to so many who made the 2013 El Zaribah Shrine Hospital Patient Christmas Party such a wonderful event? It is an impossible task. This event started in 2010 under the vision of Illustrious Sir Phil and Lady Ronda Houghton and the incredible generosity of Michael Finney. It has become a premier event of El Zaribah and this year was no exception. We have so many of our patients and their families that look forward to this event each year. To see the smiles of so many children for such a wonderful event does so much to warm the heart. So, on behalf of all our patients and families who attended, thank you, thank you, thank you to all who donated so much of your time, talents and money to make this event possible. Fraternally, Jim Miller, PP Hospital Chairman

Units and Clubs

Clown Unit

Send in the clowns. It’s a new year and a new team of leaders for the Clown Unit, but the one thing that will always remain constant is the support we have for our Temple and our children. All the Units and Clubs are devoted to supporting the Temple, the hospitals, and our children, but we like to think that we provide some smiles for everyone we encounter along the way. I tend to think that we are the happiness committee for the Temple and often we are the first face outsiders will identify when recognizing our Temple or Shriners International. We bring joy to those around us when we are in or out of costume, so deep in our core we are more than just a Unit we are “CLOWNS”. If you are a Clown that hasn’t been active, please come down and join us. In grease or not, you are welcome to spread cheer, stories, and smiles. We want you back and are glad for any service you perform for the Temple. We have some new clowns that may benefit from your years of experience or maybe even a new home for that costume in your closet collecting dust. Without a doubt, you are needed, wanted, and welcomed back. Bill “U-Hoo” Enloe Clown President 2014

Culinary Unit

Greetings from behind the line! Many thanks to those who attended our Desert breakfast. We had a few glitches but survived without anyone receiving any major wounds from all the cacti around the Temple! Our next fundraiser is the annual Spring CIF Barbeque. It is scheduled for February 23. The main course is beef and is sure to be a big hit with BBQ aficionados. Remember to put it on your calendar and come and enjoy. Stay out of the way of the bean dipper though, he gets out of control at times. We have sold the two parade cars so you won’t have to read my pleadings about them anymore. Our President Hal sold them on E-bay to a man and his son in Virginia. Ah the power of the Internet! We are now looking for someone to drive them there. Jason Yaffi, a long time Culinary Unit member has fallen ill and is missing from our lineup of

servers. He is sorely missed and we wish him a fast recovery and want his sense of humor back on the line. We really miss his experience and wisdom. Actually I have been tasked with sending out Birthday Cards, a job he was doing and doing quite well, I hate having too much responsibility. Our new members are adapting well and not spilling too much gravy but the table did have a fair amount of lettuce and salad dressing on it! They still have some things to learn, please bear with us as we strive to teach them proper technique and etiquette. See you from behind the serving line; I am the one wearing the clean apron! Hal, our president, is the one with the gravy on his shoe! Ken Conner, Culinary Scribe

El Dulabs

2014 is off and running and the El Dulabs are looking forward to all of our members, especially our new members, participating in all the events the Temple has to offer this year. If you are looking for a unit to join and want to have fun, come to our meeting on the third Wednesday of each month at 6:00 pm. No car ownership is required for membership. Rick Fasano

Director’s Staff

First off, a Happy New Year to all since we missed out on saying so in January! We extend an invitation to all of the new Nobles as well as any other Noble who has an interest, to come on upstairs and visit with us. Have a look see at our Unit Room and talk with us about what we do for El Zaribah. The Director’s Staff is one of the oldest Units in El Zaribah and we are indeed a busy Unit. Responsible for parts of the Shrine Candidate Indoctrination, setup of our Shrine Ceremonials and initiation of the new Nobles, cook the corn, and grille the hamburgers and hot dogs, we also hold two events of our own each year as well as complete any other feats requested by the Potentate. The Director’s Staff is kicking off 2014 strong with several functions and three of them all in one day. On March 22nd the Director’s Staff

will have a very busy day and we are putting out the call for all members to lend a hand. Yes, three functions in one day. We will begin the day setting up and tearing down the Spring Ceremonial, then the famous Director’s Staff Steak Fry followed by the Official Visit of Illustrious Sir Gerry Massey. We obviously need “all hands on deck” that day. More information in regards to all will be available soon. The entire body of the Director’s Staff, along with his Lady, mourns the loss of Illustrious Sir Dave Humphrey, Past President and Treasurer of our Unit. Tom Calvin, PP – 2nd Vice President

and Installation Ceremony on Saturday, January 4, 2014 at El Zaribah Shrine. The Legion of Honor, Flag Retirement Ceremony was completed in a very dignified manner on November 10, 2013. The Boy Scouts have expressed an interest in taking part in this ceremony to achieve a merit badge. We are taking this under consideration. 2013 Commander McCullough is preparing a written procedure for this ceremony so we don’t have to “re-invent the wheel” each time. We were disappointed in not being able to participate in the Winslow Parade due to impending snow and ice conditions. Pulling the trailer in those potential conditions in the mountains is not something we like to do. We were caught a few years ago in the snow and ice south of Flagstaff and have no desire to do that again. Thanks are extended for the work of last years Officers & members and we welcome the newly elected and installed officers for 2014. Let’s have a great 2014. To be a member of the Legion of Honor a Noble has an additional membership requirement that is to have been or is currently a member of the Armed Forces of the United States or it’s Allies and to have served honorably. Eligible Nobles and their Ladies are invited to check us out and attend our dinner meeting held the 3rd Monday of the month at the El Zaribah Auditorium. The business meeting is in the LOH Room except June, July and August. Scribe - PC / Adj./Fin. Officer - Virgil Johnston

Greeters

Overall, 2013 was a very successful year under the able leadership of Al Shattuck. We had a fairly good turnout for the parades, CornFest and circus. We have a new slate of officers that are excited to support our temple and activities for 2014. Roger Hall was elected President. Roger came to us in 2012 from Alzafar Shrine in San Antonio and now lives in Goodyear. Nick Nichols was elected 1st VP.Nick and just moved to Sun City West from Nile Shrine in Seattle where he served as Greeter President in 2002. Gary Lionberger was elected 2nd VP. Gary is a local boy and became a Shriner five years ago and is employed by Western Stucco as a District Manager. Our perennial Secretary-Treasurer is Chuck Richards who moved to the valley in 1982 from El Katif Shrine in Spokane. Chuck became inactive several years due to illness but recovered in 2010 and served as President in 2012. During his spare time he fills in as Master of Architecture for T.M. Professionals, Inc. The Greeters’ stretch limousine is polished and ready for the new parade season. Like the Marines, we’re always looking for a few good men. We meet the third Monday of each month at the El Zaribah Shrine Center. Join us for libations and dinner. Ellis (Nick) Nichols 1st VP

Motorcycle Unit

It’s 2014, wow did last year fly by or what? As I write this we just finished our New Year’s Day ride. It was well attended by members and guests, we left the Shrine at 10:00AM. I counted over 60, two and three wheelers, in our caravan. First stop Harolds club in Cave Creek, then Rio Verde, Fountain Hills and finally the Ft. McDowell Casino for brunch. A beautiful Motorcycle day. Thank you Dana for organizing the ride and our Past Pres. JC for the coffee and doughnuts. On December 8th we all dressed up in clean jeans and wiped off our leather vests for the EZMU annual Christmas Party and OV. We had over 100 in attendance and I can say in all honestly that the Ladies looked remarkable. As

we head into the New Year the newly elected officers take over the Management at EZMU. The 2014 Officers are as follows: President, Dana Dobson; Vice President, Jimmy L Harrison; Secretary, Duane Camp; Treasurer, Tom Ritter; and Parade Captain, Jim Moulder. Congratulations guys and thanks for stepping up and doing these important jobs this year. At the December Shrine elections, our own JC Reece was elected to the position of Oriental Guide. JC was our President for the past two years, did a super job, and will be a great officer for El Zaribah. Riding a motorcycle is a continual learning experience and because of that we are always eager to learn new techniques and skills. Last month we had what has become an annual event, a day long riding class put on just for our unit by Team AZ. They are the premier riders’ training group in Arizona. Ours was the advanced course and I am amazed at what I can learn from them and impressed by their training skills and professionalism. Remember, chin over wrist Harley Davidson has some fine looking new bikes this year. Some of our members have already taken delivery of their 2014 models and others are patiently waiting for their new machines. Nothing makes an old biker smile bigger than his brand new ride. EZMU has several annual fun raisers coming up. The Bowling Palooza is on April 4th and the Motorcycle swap meet will be on April 13th. We call them fun raisers because we have fun and also earn money for the transportation fund. More about these next month. As always we invite any Shriner who has an interest in motorcycles to come to a meeting and see what we are all about on the 2nd Thursday in the motorcycle room. Meet us for dinner in Red Fez before the meeting. Be safe and watch for that driver talking on the phone who is about to turn in front of you. congenial meeting with lots of good suggestions and creative criticism to help the unit come up with new ideas and improve the old activities to get the unit involved and more fun. Among other things discussed, we will be having a spring ride. This is truly good news as the Ride at the EZ ranch is essential to the heartbeat of our unit and our major source of income as well as our most important unit involved function. We also discussed upcoming parades and the possibility of participating in future parades. It looks like we will be in Wickenburg on Feb 15, Prescott on July 5, Payson on Aug 15, and Anthem in November, with the possibility of adding Scottsdale Parada Del Sol next February and Glendale in December. Things are really looking up, so try to make the next meeting and get in on the action and suggestions. The Christmas party was a fun success with a good turnout and agenda. Thanks to all who came. Also on the agenda for this year is to finally get something done on getting some matching jackets for the unit. Look for that to actually take place in 2014! Your new slate of officers is determined to make our unit more fun and productive, so please come, get involved, and help get this unit back to being like it used to be; the most active, productive, and fun unit in all of El Zaribah. We need everyone. One of the items we intend to address is trying to find more things for the non-riders to get involved in. We want to get everyone involved, excited, and anxious to be a part of a WINNER. For those of you who are not members of the unit, I sincerely urge you to attend one of our weekend party/rides at the beautiful EZ Ranch and find out just how much fun our folks generate; riding, shooting, rodeoing, and sitting around a campfire drinking and shooting the breeze and singing. It is open to all, you do not have to have a horse to enjoy the weekend. Come on out Hoping to cross your trail soon. Vaya Con Dios

A very special thanks is rendered to Denise La Voie for volunteering to be my advocate first lady for the year. There is no way that I could do the job without her help. The Patrol is looking forward to the activities that lie ahead for us. The Buckeye Parade, the Yuma Silver Spur Parade and OV, and the Laveen Parade for those who are not going to Yuma. On February 22nd in conjunction with the Apache Junction Parade the Patrol will be holding a Garage Sale at Fred and Lil Rogers house. Everyone is invited. As you can tell we are a very active Unit and I would invite our new Nobles and their Ladies to visit with us. We meet on the first Wednesday of the month. We get together in the Red Fez Room to socialize. Then, the Nobles retire to the Patrol Room for our meeting and the Ladies remain in the Red Fez Room for their meeting. display at a Church educational day. The smiles from the children are a memory we can carry with us every day. It makes the travel worthwhile to make a child or any bystander enjoy our displays. Some of our biggest crowds come at night when we add Christmas lights to our little trucks and participate in Christmas light parades. We participated in 6 light parades this year and have some of the most unique units involved and are invited back to all of them. During the year, we use the Onion sales as one of our primary fundraisers for the unit. As a unit, we sold 161 bags in 2013, resulting in a boost of about $500 to our unit treasury. We also have received $3000 in donations from Galpin Ford, which has been passed along to the Temple. We thank Greg Galpin, Joe Matheny and Galpin Ford for their support of the Shrine. We also made donations to the Circus for Shrine Bikes. We try to focus our activities on having fun, making public appearances, supporting our Shrine, supporting our Shrine Hospitals and bringing smiles to faces along parade routes. When you combine all this, we create memories for ourselves and create memories for those that see us. As a unit, we must pay a special compliment to Jim Pitts for his work in keeping our parade applications current. He stays in contact with the parade coordinators, lets us know where to go, how to get there, when to arrive and places to stop for refreshments along the way. We welcome any of you to join us.

Transportation Unit

As we begin a new year, we start to plan what we want to do and achieve during the coming year. This planning process starts with a review of past activities to see what we want to continue and what we may want to do differently. As such, we take a brief look at our activities from 2013 and share them with you. The Transportation unit had a busy year in 2013 and participated in a total of 31 different parades. This involved travel throughout the state of Arizona, as well as to New Mexico, Indianapolis and Missouri and various stops in between. We had a lot of exposure for our little trucks and generated a lot of conversation and questions about what we do. We got a lot of ambassador work talking to people along the way. Our unit has won several awards for our participation in the parades and the uniqueness of our presentations. We have awards from 6 different parades this past year, along with monetary awards for some. In addition to the parades, we made appearances at 4 different community functions, ranging from a Preschool static display, a golf tournament display and a static

Come out and visit us. Our 2013 Joint OV with several other Units and Clubs was a lot of fun. Small clubs such as ours need to band with other Units and Clubs to have a equitable meal and good time and lessen the load on the Divan Members. We had several members including two gurus on the sick list for our December meeting. We did manage to make repairs and or adjustments to several laptops that members had brought in. The Club is open to all Shriners and their Ladies. We meet on the first Monday of the month (except June, July and August) in the Computer Room. Many of the members meet beforehand for dinner in the Red Fez room. We spend little time with administrative action and most talking about or working with computers. No problem is too simple for our guru’s to work on and everyone benefits. We have several computers all set up for use by the members. If you have a computer problem that requires bringing in your computer do not hesitate to do that. Virgil Johnston, Club Secretary

Drum and Bugle

The Drum & Bugle Corps held their Election of Officers at their annual Business Meeting in December. Congratulations go to those elected officers, Jack Garrett, President, Sanford Wax, Vice President, and Alan Dye, Secretary/Treasurer. The entire Corps would like to thank Jack Garrett and his slate of 2013 officers for the work they did in seeing that 2013 was a great year for the Drum & Bugle Corps. We are confident that Jack and his 2014 officers will continue to ensure that the Club remains strong, participating in Temple events as they have in the past. Congratulations to Gerry Massey on being elected Potentate of El Zaribah Shrine for 2014. We are proud of him and are looking forward to a great year under his leadership. The Drum & Bugle Corps plans to be an active Club this year and stands ready to support Gerry, the rest of the 2014 Divan, and all of El Zaribah with our presence. At the last Drum & Bugle Corps meeting of 2013, we held a Christmas Party for members, their Ladies, the Oriental Band and several guests. Mobile Nobles Shrine Club

Happy New Year everyone!!! A big thank you to all of the 2013 officers for an outstanding job in guiding the Mobile Nobles through the year. The Nobles elected as officers for the 2014 year are as follows. President Bill McKeigan P.P., 1st VP. Keith Duncan, 2nd VP Junior Grimm, Secretary Don Johnston and Treasurer Fred Shaw. Let’s all get behind our new officers and wish them the best as they take us into the New Year. The past meetings have been very busy with the election of officers and the planning of our upcoming events. By the time you read this we will have had our annual OV/Dinner Dance at Venture Out Resort in Mesa and with all of the advanced planning I’m sure it was a huge success. The next big event for the Mobile Nobles will be our annual Sunday Brunch to be held on March the 9th starting at 10 AM at Painted Mountain Golf Resort 6210 E McKellips Rd. in Mesa AZ. The cost is $15:00 per person and that includes your tip and taxes. Noble Ron Walker is in charge of ticket sales and you can reach him at 480-357-4339. The aluminum can project is in full swing as the winter visitors provide us with an increase in the volume of cans received. Also, a big thanks to the Valle Del Oro Masonic Coffee club, for their hard work and generous contribution to our can project.

Yuma Shrine Club

Well, the year is off to a good start. I would like to thank all that came to our OV. There are a lot of parades for this year. The schedule is out so you can make plans. We are going to make as many as we can. If you are from a smaller place than Phoenix and have a Blue Lodge let the brothers know that we have things to do. They have already done the hard work and becoming a Shriner is very easy. You still get all the fellowship of the Lodge and get to have some fun. Not that becoming a Shriner is not work, but the rewards are well worth it. You can get no better feeling when a child you have helped is able to walk. We as Nobles sometimes lose sight of why we started this journey. It was because there is a need for the Hospitals we support. So let us all keep in mind it is for the KIDS, not you or me. If we keep this in our hearts and mind there is nothing we can’t do. Go out there and be proud that you are a Shriner. Dale Kreger, President

As of this writing, our Supreme Queen has not had her official visit with us. She is to be with us on Tuesday, February 4th and we are so looking forward to it. At this time, it looks like we will be initiating 2 new members into Qadesh Temple. Ladies and Shriners, like the Shrine, membership is our number 1 concern and we are always looking for new members! To be eligible for membership in Daughters of the Nile a woman must be related by birth or marriage to a Shriner, Master Mason, or Daughter of the Nile or be a majority member in good standing of a Masonic-related organization for girls. Our philanthropic endeavors are limited to supporting the Shriners Hospitals for Children®. How about working alongside your husband, daughter, mother, grandmother, other relative, or friend for the children? Wouldn’t that be fun! For more information, contact our Pr. Recorder. You may contact her at bobbie@balthazors. com or on her cell phone 602-740-5671.

LOSNA

Happy New Year and many blessings to all our members. Sphinx Court is very lucky to have such a wonderful place to hold our meetings. The Shriners are very helpful and willing to assist us in many ways. We have a beautiful room in which to hold our meetings and also great food for lunches and dinners. We are so fortunate to have the use of these facilities and we really appreciate all your help. Lady Dee Berkebile-Wright, High Priestess
