East Nusa Tenggara in Indonesia is AMAZING!!! That impresses many foreign tourists who visited this province. They were participants of Sail Indonesia, Blue Water, and others those who often visit East Nusa Tenggara by cruisers. Their impression is absolutely reasonable because East Nusa Tenggara puts aside millions of natural bewitchments. We all know that the only Flobamora has two world miracle assets, those are three colored water lake "Kelimutu" and scarce animal "Komodo". East Nusa Tenggara also has untouchable exotic nature beside its unique and potential cultural aspects like Pasola attraction in Sumba, traditional rituals of each regency, traditional whale fishing attraction in Lamalera, Megalithic tourist objects in Sumba and Ngada, beautiful marine parks in Maumere, Labuan Bajo, Riung, kinds of motive weaving clothes, kinds of cultures of Timor, Alor, Sabu, Lembata, Flores, and Sumba. Positive impression is always accelerated by expected improvement changes. Tourists also remind the local government of East Nusa Tenggara straightening up facilities and infrastructures to support East Nusa Tenggara Tourism Industry. Where is the improvement of tourism industry of East Nusa Tenggara directed? Government and private sectors seem to be in different point of view to realize the target in which the government enjoys its own programs and private sacrifices its plans. If the two authorities

had collaborated to develop this sector, the improvement of East Nusa Tenggara tourism sector would have been guaranteed. Investment of tourism sector is widely opened. In this case, the provincial government Leader should be the one who has high intention and awareness in concerning with regional potencies to be explored and exploited. The recent Governor of East Nusa Tenggara, Frans Lebu Raya, and his vice, Esthon Funai are expected to accelerate this sector to be developed by involving authorities and communities of culture owners. "Anggur Merah" which is the icon of the leader and his vice in concerning with tourism sector to be the third priority of strategic program to achieve social economic growth and the improvement of social welfare. To promote East Nusa Tenggara through tour packets carried

out by tour operators and travel gents in Bali and NTT such as TransNusa is expected being able to cooperate with tourism promotion media to be a must. Bilingual tabloid "FORTUNA" now presents to encourage "Anggur Merah" program implemented by the government to empower tourism potencies which now are getting faded. Being the first bilingual media in NTT, FORTUNA provides promotion arena of tourism potencies and investment opportunity in East Nusa Tenggara. Expectedly, cooperation should be interlaced by both the government and the involved elements in order to gain new East Nusa Tenggara through tourism sector achievement.(*)

FORTUNA tabloid Editorial Manager, Fidel Nogor, posed among the Head of Tourism and Cultural Department office of East Nusa Tenggara,Gulam Husain, Assistant II of Provincial Secretariat of East Nusa Tenggara, Partini Hardjokusumo, Trans Nusa Air Service Finance Manager, Allen Susanto, and tour participants from East Java in Governor office of East Nusa Tenggara before touring to Kelimutu Lake, Ende, recently.

ast Nusa Tenggara is AMAZING!!! Most participants of Sail Indonesia 2008, for example, have the following impressions of East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) people: very friendly in welcoming their guests. This has been experienced when they themselves visited local tourism objects. The unigueness of East Nusa Tenggara tourism objects also are now natural and amazing to be visisted. Lin,

an English woman, for example, acknowledged this. When she was in NTT, last moment, she told FORTUNA that NTT province people in general are indeed friendly and happy. She added that NTT tourism is potentially rich and beautiful. For them, NTT is a very nice place to relax. Another participant, David, an Australian, believed that the art performances were extraordinary. There have been many performances showing that the hosts are indeed friendly, said David who has been to Indonesia twice. David apologized for the fact he and his friends could buy all the souvenirs because their boats are too small to load the souvenirs. Mary, another Australian, also supported David. When interviewed by Fortuna in Maumere, she said that she was very pleased to know that NTT people in general and Maumere people in particular are so friendly. She promised to introduce ENT to her friends in Australia so that they would be very happy to come to NTT. In addition, Peter, a Sweden, added that Flores is a remarkable island because of its friendly inhabitants. He hopes that he would come back to NTT and visiting all the tourist resorts in someday somehow in the future. (*)

WHEN delivering a speech on behalf of Indonesia Sail 2008 in Maumere, the Capital City of Sikka Regency East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), Peter Brandly, a New Zealander, said that all Indonesia Sail participants wholeheartedly thanked East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) people in general for their sincere and friendly welcome of Indonesia Sail participants. He asserted that being in NTT is like being at home. All of us are happy to be in this extraordinary event. We may sail in Flores waters and enjoy the beauty of Indonesian natural and cultural tourism in general and of ENT tourism in particular. NTT is indeed rich of natural, cultural, marine, and traditional tourism objects. We suggest that those heritages should be well kept and preserved, said Peter supported by all Indonesia Sail participants who joined a gala dinner at Waiara beach last time. The guests believed that East Nusa Tenggara in general has such a wonderful panorama and a great environment that should be professionally kept and preserved for the future generations of Indonesia to come. promise that they will tell their friends and families at home about the great experiences they have ever had here in NTT in general and in Sikka in particular. They will send great messages abroad and leave here in the beaches of NTT great and long lasting memories. It s known that, Sail Indonesia 2008 participants was visiting several tourist destinations in NTT namely Kupang, Alor, Lembata, Maumere, Ende and labuan Bajo. (stef/tim-42na)

East Nusa Tenggara Provincial Government (NTT) commits to go on developing tourism sector to be one of the programmed superiority sectors of Anggur Merah (allotted budget for society to attain social welfare) which is pointed out by the Governor of East Nusa Tenggara, Frans Lebu Raya and his Vise, Esthon Foenay. Commitment stimulated by the development of this sector is close related to the increasing of social welfare. Governor of NTT, Frans Lebu Raya said that the government widely opens and be ready to facilitate the involved persons in tourism sector to manage fully tourism industry in East Nusa Tenggara Province. The development approach is considered more effectively as inspired by the Spirit of Anggur Merah , which situates society to be the main target in all undergone agenda of the development by allotting budget pro society. Lebu Raya pointed out that there are so many tourism potencies in East Nusa Tenggara in which have been ready to be developed and need the involvement of private sectors initiative and creativity to package them. To promote NTT tourism potency through tour packages is considered to be more effective and more economically, particularly, to encourage visitors interest to visit East Nusa Tenggara. In this case, tourism sector seems not to be explicated in 8 strategic work programs by local government s agenda, he said that tourism industry portion is absolutely programmed in the third priority along with programmed economy social growth. Whatever agenda of tourism development is - should be terminated on the effort of economy and social welfare achievement. (*)

A LONG with Fortuna a few days ago in his office room, the Governor Frans Lebu Raya, said that the government does realize on the importance of tourism sector should be carried on being the most priority one among others. To support tourism sector growth, Lebu Raya, said that his administration also commits to open opportunity for investors to invest in NTT. This commitment is supported by providing uncomplicated regulations and undemanding, prompt, inexpensive, accurate service systems. It is initiated by good investment condition can excite economy growth and more job markets. In spite of investment needs a lot of requirements but I instructed in order that service systems applied for investors are not allowed to be complicated, yet it should be prompt and inexpensive one. If in previous years, certification document achievement took for a month, hence this year it just takes for a week and its service system administrated in one authority institution with the intention that it takes only for a day if necessary to achieve targeted investment plan realization promptly , said Lebu Raya. Lebu Raya uttered that the government s strong motivation in growing tourism sector is absolutely reasonable. He said, adjacent to being potential prosperousness of cultures and arts, natural resource and religions, NTT is also provincial archipelago which has many kinds of potential maritime tourism, which in turn, it becomes an alternative focus of being held the International Sail Competition event, such as Sail Indonesia and Blue Water Rally. We have unique tourism objects and as matter of fact that those are the only existed in NTT, like Kelimutu lake, scarce fauna Komodo in West Manggarai, Pasola attraction in Sumba. Besides, NTT Province also has attractive potential natural tourisms, cultures and religions, such as; prosesi Jum at Agung (Sacred Friday Procession) in Larantuka, traditional whale fishing in Lembata, beautiful seabed coral reefs in Alor and Maumere, traditional tight weaving in Timor and Flores. Those are the NTT superior tourisms which get ready to be promoted and marketed to tourists and I am exactly welcoming and pleased them to visit NTT , Lebu Raya said to promote. In related to the problem, Lebu Raya expectedly requests all sides include regional and municipality administrative governments in all East Nusa Tenggara to welcome investors in this province along with its more conducive condition. In collaboration with between local government and National Terrain Board (BPN) in the effort of achieving legal law enforcement of terrain ownership that sometimes becomes an obstacle for investment l(team/42na)

Flores is part of the East Nusa Tenggara province. The island is split into nine regencies (local government districts); from West to East they are: Manggarai Barat, Manggarai, Manggarai Timur, Ngada, Nagekeo, Ende, Sikka, Flores Timur and Lembata. Wawo Muda Volcano, which erupted in 2001 Flores has several active and dormant volcanoes, including Egon, Ilimuda, Leroboleng, and Lewotobi. There are also many of tourist resorts lies on West to the East of this Island. Flores is Amazing and very beautiful to be visited. Flora and Fauna he west coast of Flores is one of the few places, aside from the island of Komodo itself, where the Komodo dragon can be found in the wild. The Flores Giant Rat is also endemic to the Island. In September 2003, at Liang Bua Cave in western Flores, paleoanthropologists discovered skeletons of a previously unknown hominid species. Homo floresiensis, affectionately termed hobbits after the small characters in the Lord of the Rings, appear to be miniaturized versions of Homo erectus standing about one metre tall. They may have existed until as recently as 11,000 BC. Local reports of elf-like people, the Ebu Gogo, or the Orang Pendek of Sumatra, have caused speculation that Flores man may have survived into the historical period, or even to the present. The discovery has been published in the October 28, 2004, issue of Nature magazine and the April 2005 issue of the National Geographic Magazine. However, on August 21, 2006, the National Geographic Newsletter published an article reporting that several scientists now believe that the remains discovered in 2004 were not of a different species

but were pygmies. Flores was also a habitat of the extinct Stegodon dwarf elephant until approximately 18,000 years ago. It also was the habitat of species of giant rodents. It is speculated by scientists that limited resources drove the few species that lived upon the island to gigantism and dwarfism. Culture A statue of Jesus in Maumere, Flores. There are many languages spoken on the island of Flores, all of them belonging to the Austronesian family. In the centre of the island in the districts of Ngada and Ende there is what is variously called the Central Flores Dialect Chain or the Central Flores Linkage. Within this area there are slight linguistic differences in almost every village. At least six separate languages are identifiable. These are from west to east: Ngadha, Nage, Keo, Ende, Lio and Palu e, which is spoken on the island with the same name of the north coast of Flores. Locals would probably also add So a and Bajawa to this list, which anthropologists have labeled dialects of Ngadha. Portuguese traders and missionaries came to Flores in the 16th century, mainly to Larantuka and Sikka. Their influence is still discernible in Sikka s

language and culture. Flores is almost entirely Catholic and represents one of the religious borders created by the Catholic expansion in the Pacific and the spread of Islam from the west across Indonesia. In other places in Indonesia, such as in the Malukus and Sulawesi, the divide is more rigid and has been the source of bloody sectarian clashes. Tourism The most famous tourist attraction in Flores is Kelimutu; three colored lakes in the district of Ende. These coloured lakes change colours on a regular basis. The latest colors (late 2004) were said to be turquoise, brown and black. There is good snorkelling and diving on several locations along the north coast of Flores, most notably Maumere and Riung. However, due to the destructive practice of local fishermen using bombs to fish, and locals selling shells to tourists, combined with the after effects of a devastating tsunami in 1992, the reefs have slowly been destroyed. Labuan Bajo (on the western tip of Flores) is a town often used by tourists, from where they can visit Komodo and Rinca. Labuanbajo also attracts scuba divers, as whale sharks inhabit the waters around Labuanbajo. Tourists can visit Luba and Bena villages to see traditional houses in Flores. Larantuka, on the isle s eastern end, is known for its Holy Week festivals. (nusacendana.biz.com)

istorically, there was a young man, named Sangguana, lived Rote island, East Nusa Tenggara. Once upon a time, he shepherded cattle in savannah. When he felt tired and sleepy, he fell sleeping under the shadow of an oak tree. When he was sleeping, he was dreaming playing a mysterious music. After getting up he still remembered rhythm notes he had been playing. He then slept again and surprisingly, he dreamt the same thing. Finally, focusing his dream, he decided making a musical instrument made of oak leaves accomplished with strings in the middle of the instrument. This musical instrument which is as similar as harp is now well-known as sasando. Literally, Sasando derives from a word of Rotenese language, sasandu which means tremble or sound of a musical instrument. Historically, sasando has been played among Rotenese people since seventh century. Sasando resembles a pinched musical instrument like guitar, violin, and kecapi. The main part of sasando is a shape of long tube made of bamboo. In the middle, encircle from the top to bottom and strings (dawai-dawai) stretched out the tube, from top to bottom they are foothold. These string wedges sound different rhythms when they are pinched. Then the tube is placed in a copartner made of a kind of oak leaves knit like a fan. It is sasando resonances. Accompanied by such typical music, sasando impresses whoever likes traditional music. Sasando music is now played to be an interesting one in events. Sasando typical rhythm and its soul touch finally brings it go international. It is always played in many events both national and international ones. (*)

UNDERSTANDING North Central Timor (TTU) Regency means understanding its friendly people s diversity, uniqueness, and ways of life. Such a wealthy culture transferred from generation to generation for hundreds of years is really integrated with the people of the regency. It has its own traditional dance and music; it also has some cultural rites indicating how diverse Indonesian culture in the regency is. The people of TTU community are well-known for their strong unity and great loyalty to their culture and to the development of TTU. The people of TTU basically live in three major local government centers whose kinship and historical events are well documented, that is, Biboki, Insana, dan Miomafo (Biinmafo). These three government centers are divided further into some Sonafs (kingdoms) whose power and territorial boundaries are clearly drawn, namely, among others, Sonaf Maslete of Usi Bana in the district of South Kefa, Sonaf Haumeni of Usi Lake at Haumeni, the district of East Miomafo, and Sonaf Sonbay at Noemuti; each sonaf which has its own power and becomes a community center with its own traditions and culture is led by a king. The capital of Sonaf is the sonaf center of power

where the king lives. It is also a place to pay a tribute and offer their offerings to their king, to perform certain cultural rituals (i.e. thanksgiving for their good harvest, asking for rain, and preventing diseases), to meet and to discuss as well as to share their problems with the king. Such cultural rituals are of course interesting to watch and study. After having their harvest, for example, the people of certain sonaf go to their king to offer their agricultural products. They also offer some offerings to ask for rain and to prevent certain diseases. This is particularly done at Sonaf Maslete, Temkesi, and Sonbay. In addition to visiting sonafs and enjoying their various cultures, there are also many other great events worth visiting by tourists, domestic and international. Taking part in celebrating the birthday of the City of Kefamenanu in December is an example. In celebrating the event, the people of TTU usually acts some scenes showing how the capital of the regency moved from Naetoko to Kefa, which is the present capital. A two week exhibition promoting the products made by TTU people usually ends this event l(dolf/42na)

any kinds of cultures, natural beauty and spiritual tourism assets in Belu regency become a strengthening to be relied on wide spreading tourism industry in the regency. It is a border area to link between Indonesia and Timor Leste, which in turn, the similar cultures between them empower number of visitors from Timor Leste to Belu. Dominated cultural assets and spiritual in Belu like Likurai, bamboo flute music, Matabesi, and Kamanasa, traditional villages, Makes fortress and Maria Lourdes cave, and traditional rituals are attractive tourist visits. Its natural beauty showed by natural panorama Lakaan mountain, exotic views of Susuk pond and Gurita

bay. Bali also has potential amazing beaches such as Motadikin and Matamauk ones, Lesutil waterfall and so on. Recently, a most crowded society mobility location is a border gate between Timor Leste and Indonesia, Motaain border area. Related to potential attractive cultures and spiritual events, the local government of Belu under new leader s administration, Joacim Lopez, the regent and his vice, Lodovikus Taolin commit to increase tourism industry in this border area. Through Depatment of tourism and culture, the central government gets ready to encourage NTT local government programs to realize tourism potency to be a priority sector. The head of Culture and

Petrus Bria Seran, MM replied FORTUNA a few days ago in Atambua that generally, he wanted to maximize all tourism potency to invite more and more tourist visits in order to increase social welfare. When the time comes, people hold traditional ritual. Visiting Mingar white sandy beach can be activated any time by motorcycles or drives from Lewoleba, the capital town of Lembata regency in around 90 minutes. According to FORTUNA s investigation a few days ago, along the beach now is surrounded by tourist huts (wetak in Lamaholot language), and traditional home stays. Native population benefits the opportunity by providing canned drinks, local food menu, and baked fish for visitors. Later on, this tourist object is continually ordered, renovated, promoted as planned by the local government to be a center of tourist objects in East Indonesia said the regent of Nagawutung, Leaj Lazarus a few days ago. ALOR is an isle located between Timor and Flores Island. Some people name this island as the island of magic since they believe that something irrational often happens here. Besides this assumption, Alor still keeps admirable places and culture that unable to be found at any other places. The capital of Alor is kalabahi. Tuti Adagae Park is nuts (kenari) forest with remarkable panorama surrounding it. There is also a hot spring. Takpala Village traditional village with its ritual ceremony. Moru is the first place where Moslems staying and starting their religion in Alor. If we travel to the east from this place, we will meet mystic stone formed like a statue. The statue will make motions when we stand far from it but when we move closer to it, it just stands still. We are unable to take picture of this odd statue because it will not succeed. Hulanani, an ancient monument since Megalithic period and handwriting of Al-Qur an are kept here. Alaang, a place of Moko with 90 cm height as a symbol of wedding gift. Monaseli Beach, another mystery happens in this well known beach where an Indonesia flag situated

The most beautiful sea garden is able to be enjoyed here when the weather is nice and calm. Pandai Beach, something mysterious once happened on this beach in 1960s, when people tried to remove a tower here from an unknown place. Some ships did not succeed moving the tower although they had made hard efforts. Mali And Maimol Beach, there is an interesting sea garden on Mali beach, nearby the airport and Maimol beach, which is suitable for recreation to local people. It can be reached by airplane of Kupang Kalabahi, daily, National Shipping Lines boat from Larantuka Kalabahi, Ferryboat from Kupang Kalabahi or from Waiwerang Kalabahi. Alor regency consists of big and small islands, so motorboats are the best transportation means to use. (*)

embrala in Timor is an exposed reef break that has very consistent surf. May – Oct (dry season) is the favored time of year for waves. The best wind direction is from the north northwest. Groundswells are more common that windswells and the best swell direction is from the southwest. There is a left breaking reef. Unlikely to be too crowded, even when the surf is up. Rocks are a hazard. Roti’s best known surf spot. It is a long left that captures and holds any size swell. Fun under 8 feet, but best from 8 feet and up. Over 10 feet it is one of the best, perfect big wave spots. We have found a little piece of heaven here in Indonesia. The absolute opposite to Kupang in a little anchorage called Nembrala on the island of Roti. After a most pleasant overnight sail from Kupang we drifted into the anchorage to find our pals on Luna and Pelikaan holding our place here. Of course they were already out surfing on one of 3 breaks that would keep us entertained for the next week. We dropped the hook and were out on our boards before the boat had settled. The swell was up and all 3 breaks were going off consistently so you had your choice of sessions, sunrise to sunset. Everyone had a great time and at the very least got some great exercise. Shore side was the next surprise. The town was more developed than we had imagined with a paved road but still remote, clean and quiet. Most homes consist of a surprisingly large concrete building with a few rooms and lovely paned windows and many smaller thatched huts behind. The bathrooms or waysays often have a large tub of water that is only used by scooping out the water with a cup and pouring it over yourself for a shower or down the toilet. Many of the homes here are also losemen or homestays like a hostel and for only $3-5/day you will be well cared for and 3 warm meals. Goats and pigs walk freely about the town and though we could never tell, I am sure the owners know who belongs to whom. Many homes also make crafts such as jewelry and ikat, a hand woven cloth where each strand of thread is dyed first and then the design woven into place. We did quickly discover that they have a sales technique we hadn't yet encountered. They simply board your boat ready or not. They are always very pleasant and happy to just sit and stay a while, even if you are not purchasing. Happy to go eventually and never seemingly offended. The first true Indonesian phrase we have learned though is Thank You, I Don't Want It - say it with me, Terima kasih, Tidak mau - very good! The only true noise to be heard around the island is the tuk tuk tuk sound that their colorful and diverse fishing vessels make as they pass by morning and night. They head out each evening to begin their fishing and tuk tuk tuk back in each morning with the sun for some sleep. The smaller vessels are a marvel at how they even float first for being so narrow and

tippy looking, secondly for holding so many men. How they maneuver and fish is a wonder. The larger vessels are a combination of gigantic outriggers held together with a weave of lines that could equal any suspension bridge. Despite all this fishing going on though, we never saw any fish to eat at the market aside from the piles of dried sardines. What they do have on shore are seaweed farms. Low lying mesh fences staked into the grounds like a garden that sit under water in everything but the lowest tides. They grow this plump twig like sea weed that they collect daily. As soon as high tide turns to head out the women are out there to collect pieces that start to wash up to shore. As low tide emerges, they spend hours of bent over back breaking work collecting this green crop and placing it into 2 large mesh bags that they then carry over their shoulders with a long stick, yoke style. Once it is cleaned up, it is laid out to dry on large tables of palm leaves. For their efforts, they receive 15,000 rupiah per kilogram. That is less than $2.00 a bag for you and me at home. Their water is retrieved in much the same fashion from fresh water wells around the island, double bucket yoke style. I mention this because this is the woman's job around here. Never did we see men carrying either. All this back breaking work leads to lot of sweet little old women hunched over and in a fair amount of pain we imagine. Well if Vanuatu and Fiji had their kava to forget their woes and ease their pains, Indonesia has their betel nut. Evident by their red stained lips, teeth and gums, betel nut, or sirih pinang is a combination of 3 parts of the betel palm tree. The green stalk looks remotely like a limp green bean with a funny texture, the nut looks like a tiny immature coconut seed and the lime, a white powdery substance. Combine all three in your mouth often with a bit of shredded looking tobacco, chew like a mad man and you will eventually have a mild stimulant like effect of nicotine, and a mouth full of red spit, which of course ends up on the ground. Watch where you step. The market in town holds as many piles of this for sale as any other product or produce available. (*)

upang is the capital of East Nusa Tenggara Province, the capital of Kupang regency and the capital of Kupang municipality. This city becomes very important because it constitutes not only the seat of government and economy but also then central government of Kupang regency and East Nusa Tenggara Province. The superiority of Kupang city is that it makes up an entrance gate for big cities and provinces in all over Indonesia, as well as foreign countries. Beside that, Kupang also becomes a transit spot both from big cities of all over Indonesia and from abroad to reach regencies and cities in East Nusa Tenggara Province. regional potential effective promotion stage but also being an economical profitable for both government and society. As he stated that the government necessarily formulates and sells more permanent promotion stands/boats and even provides national standard price VIP boats. The promotion stands accomplished by electricity and hygienic water supplies. Then society is allowed to sell their handy made souvenir in order that each event would be profitable for them. This model admitted by Wely is applied as impacts and benefit of NTT province in participating both domestic and foreign promotion events. To seek location, Wely said not to intentionally shun Flobamora Mall to be a priority place of holding events, He wants to design a more strategic and representative location then. ENTEX is owned by provincial government not only a Tourism Department Office so that it needs to be considered because every provincial capital city has a promotion arena to promote its own tourism industries, investment products and handy crafts. Although ANTEX this year is granted fully by local government in which temporarily the government s fund is limited, however, it is held maximally if being given the opportunity or innovation to effort. He expected all elements and the involved persons in tourism, like PHRI, ASSITA, HPI and others to involve in the tourism industry development both in providing flight, sea and land transportation services in order to increase greater ENTEX status in 2009. I think, design should be different because if it is not, we just waste the grant his challenge. lfdl/42na
