Hello everyone and welcome back to the Domain. Let’s see if I can resist mentioning our playing surface this week... Our previous home game against Huntly shows that football, when it feels like it, really does have a sense of humour. As frustrating as many of the elements of that game were, I think the football gods, if you believe they exist, just decided they’d have a good old laugh at our expense during our first Premiership home game of the season. It’s clear that if you don’t finish teams off when you have the chance then you stand to be turned over by anyone. We’ve had several Saturday afternoons like that over the last few seasons...so hopefully we’ve got that out of our system for 2021. I wasn’t at the cup game over in Hamilton last Saturday but, from a club perspective, it was good to see a few reserve team guys get a good look at first team football. We had to take a pragmatic approach to that game, so hopefully that pays dividends today and during the remainder of the season. In the short term, fingers crossed the niggles have eased a bit. The junior football season has been going for a couple of weeks - it’s great to see so many smiling young faces out enjoying their football every Saturday morning. Numberswise, we’re ahead of where we were in 2020, and that’s despite losing more the two teams worth of players to the college at the start of the season. Best of all, for the kids, when they’re playing home games they get to enjoy good playing surfaces up at Pohlen Park which, as our senior players will agree, helps a lot (sorry, I just had to get my regular whine about our surfaces in...). Hopefully everyone enjoys this afternoon’s game, as well as Sunday’s Waikato Ladies Division 1 top of the table clash. I’m not sure how much of it I’ll be able to see as I’m in Hamilton on Saturday and Taupo on Sunday with teams I coach, so you’ll just have to enjoy the games on my behalf.
