FREE LIBRARY PROGRAMS “Chairs” by Silver Kite Intergenerational Theatre Company

DNA and Genealogy

Boulevard Park Library Saturday, June 4, 2:00 pm

Genealogists have been researching using paper records for centuries, and new technology has only made it better. With DNA testing becoming available and affordable, opportunities wait for those who are seeking answers to questions about their heritage. Learn (in plain English!) the basics of the DNA testing, how it can help you discover your roots, the best companies to test with, and how to join with others to find a common heritage. Included are several case studies with fascinating results. Presented by professional genealogist, Claudia Breland.

“Chairs” is an original theatre performance created by Silver Kite Community Arts, LLC (www.silverkite.us) Intergenerational Theatre Company. During the performance, the cast members of “Chairs” share their personal life stories through storytelling, drama, dance, music, laughter, and movement. After the performance, the cast engages the audience in a talk-back conversation which includes a reflection on the performance, reminiscence session, and sharing audience stories.

Meditation: A Tool To Balance Your Life Burien Library Tuesday, June 21, 6:00pm It is now being recognized that the practice of meditation contributes to a more positive, healthy lifestyle. It is an invaluable tool helping people reduce stress, gain a deeper sense of fulfillment in life as well as foster greater physical, emotional and spiritual well-being. Join, Ajili Hodari, Esq who has been meditating for over 30 years as he connects meditation and spiritual development to important aspects of our lives. He will offer a practical technique of meditation that can positively impact your life. Through first hand demonstrations of this simple yet highly effective method you will discover the key to deeper concentration, relaxation and profound personal growth.

Burien Library Saturday, June 11, 12:30pm

Note: Those with basic to intermediate computer skills and some online experience will benefit most from this presentation.

Pete Seeger: The Man and The Music Burien Farmers Market Thursday, July 7, 2:00pm Pete Seeger (1919-2014) is an iconic presence in the 20th Century American music landscape, revered by some and reviled by others for his activism on issues of labor, war, civil rights, and the environment. Pacific Northwest musical duo Hank and Claire sketch the line from Pete Seeger’s personal story to the social justice issues that inspired his music. In addition to stories about his life, each phase of Seeger’s activism is illustrated with songs he wrote and/or popularized. You will learn the context for such iconic songs as “Where Have All the Flowers Gone?” and “Turn, Turn, Turn.” Of course you are invited to sing along with Hank and Claire, a banjo, and 12-string guitar!

Mental Health in our Community and the Media Burien Library Sunday, May 15 • 2–4pm Join us for a community discussion about recent media coverage of mental health in our region. We’ll convene citizen stakeholders in a facilitated dialogue on how people find information, how to be a smart news consumer and what the community needs from local media in order to learn about mental health issues. The discussion is hosted by the American Society of News Editors (ASNE) as part of ASNE’s National Community and News Literacy Roundtables Project, an initiative working with news, educational and civic institutions to discuss a critical issue in a community, with the community and through a media lens. This is one of a series of community conversations throughout the King County Library System on homelessness as part of our 2016 adult program series, Everyone’s Talking About It.
