News from the Arbor Greene HOA Greetings from the Homeowner’s Association! The Homeowners Association held its annual meeting and elections on March 25th. Here are the results: • All of the amendment issues failed due to lack of quorum. We did not meet the minimum number of cast ballots to make amendment changes. • CONGRATULATIONS to Judi Swartz (Vice President), Pat Chung (Treasurer), Sheryl Greenlee (Secretary) and Charlie Watt. Judi, Pat, and Sheryl were re-elected as Directors and also elected to officer positions for the board. Charlie is a 1st time BOD member. All of these members receive a 2 year term that expires in March of 2016. Thank you for volunteering. The community appreciates your time and service! • I was re-elected as HOA board president. I am in the middle of a two year term that started last year. • WE BID FAREWELL to Mike Konicek and Dhanni Sukhai. Both Mike and Dhanni were long time members of the HOA Board and have decided to step down. Their experience and service will be missed. In addition, Mike was the Treasurer of the board for the last several years as well as interim board president in 2011. THANK YOU!! You will both be missed!! The Homeowners Association is always looking for new volunteers. If you have any interest in learning more about what we do, please come and check out our monthly meetings or even contact me directly. As a reminder, Spring is the BEST TIME OF THE YEAR to plant grass. If your yard needs a few plugs or totally resodded, please consider doing it now. A well maintained yard is a key to a curb appeal. Message From Your Neighborhood Watch (NWA) Coordinators - Paul & Hally Boucher “Home Security Checkup” Hello Arbor Greene (AG) Neighbors. It’s that time of year when many of us have been working on repairing, updating, or cleaning our homes, garages, and yards. Seldom do we think of home security when we take on these other projects, but this is the perfect time to do so. Below are some tips to help you verify and improve the security of your home and family. Outdoor cleanup with a security focus: This is the time of year when trees and shrubs experience major growth spurts. Consider trimming trees around your home to ensure a clear view of your property and also allow home and street lighting to illuminate more of your property. Trim shrubs to expose windows and doors, preventing thieves from being able to easily hide behind them when they are trying to view inside or enter your home. Check and repair door and window locks: Take time to walk through your entire home and verify the security of each window and door. Repair any broken or worn lock, door-knob, seal, or hardware; repairing these locking mechanisms deters crimes of convenience. Many thieves enter homes through the sides and rear of homes that have overgrown trees or shrubs or broken locks. Also check garage doors to ensure they can’t be opened unless door openers or locks are activated. Installing a “zip-tie” may prevent your garage door from being opened by a thief using a coat hanger or similar device while standing outside your door. Consider repairing lanai door locks and hardware. Adding electronic devices that ring inside your home when a lanai door is opened will also enhance your home and pool security. Installing deadbolts, security chains, locking pins in lanai doors, etc. are other low cost means to add to your home’s security. Check and repair home lighting: Take a moment to walk around your home to verify the proper functioning of each outdoor lamp. Replace or repair cracked or broken lamps to help deter night time surveillance, vandalism, or break-ins by criminals. Think about installing photosensitive switches, allowing for automatic day/night light activation. Consider adding motion activated assemblies to existing or new outdoor lamp fixtures. Test and repair home security systems: If your home alarm is monitored, contact your security company to request a free system check. Most monitoring companies will repair or upgrade these systems at little or no cost. If your alarm system is not monitored, review your alarm’s paperwork and perform a system check to ensure all sensors and functions are operating properly. You can also contact an independent alarm technician who may do this work for a small fee. Most homes in Arbor Greene were initially built with alarm systems. If you’re unsure if your house has an alarm, check the walls near your main entrances (front, utility, and garage doors) or master bedroom for keypads. Small metal boxes are often mounted on closet walls, indicating the presence of an alarm system. Consider testing, repairing, or upgrading these systems to allow you to fully secure your home. Neighborhood Watch can help with many of these issues or if you have other questions about your system. As recommended by the Tampa Police Department (TPD), if you see suspicious person(s) or activity, immediately call the TPD’s Suspicious Activity line (813-231-6130). If you think a crime is about to occur or has been committed against person(s) or property, then immediately dial 9-1-1. In either case, call the TPD from a safe location and do not confront suspicious person(s). The TPD Dispatcher will ask you several questions about the suspect(s) activities, gender, age, race, clothing, height, weight, etc. and suspect(s) vehicle (including make, model, year, color, license plate number, etc.), if any. The TPD uses this data to initially assess the situation and aids them in deciding how rapidly they send or divert TPD units, how many units are dispatched to your location, etc. The TPD repeatedly asks us to let AG residents know that the TPD wants all of us to be their “eyes and ears,” watching for and immediately reporting suspicious activity and crimes. Emergency/TPD phone numbers on refrigerator magnets are available for FREE at the AG Clubhouse/Community Center. Please see the Clubhouse attendant about this free gift provided by your AG NWA Coordinators. If you would like to receive additional security tips and other relevant information from the TPD, please email us at ArborGreene-NWA@hotmail.com. Joining this email distribution group does not obligate you to any other NWA activity, but should help you and your family to be better informed and more secure, making AG an even better place to live. AG NWA is an all-volunteer run program overseen by the TPD. Thank you. PAGE 14

Beware of the Giant Toad! The Cane Toad can be cute and amusing to small children and animals; there are hidden dangers that one should be aware of. The largest of the frogs and toads found in Florida, the giant toad is not native to the United States. Originally released in the US to control white grubs in the sugar cane fields the giant toad became established in Southern Florida as a result of an accidental release of about 100 specimens from the stock of a pet dealer at Miami airport in 1955. Giant toads are a highly predacious exotic species that will eat all types of native frogs and toads. Skilled at locating all types of food, they have been known to also eat pet food. Caution should be taken with the cane toad because when threatened or handled it secretes a highly toxic milky substance from its large parotoid glands at the back of its head, behind the ears. This secretion can burn your eyes, may irritate your skin, and can kill cats and dogs if they ingest the secretion. Symptoms of Giant Toad poisoning in pets include drooling, head-shaking, crying, loss of coordination, and, in more serious cases, convulsions. The dog’s (or cat’s) gums often turn red, an indicator used by veterinarians to distinguish toad poisoning from epilepsy. For this reason, pet owners should be familiar with their pet’s normal gum color. Treatment: If you suspect toad poisoning, get a hose and run water in the side of the dog’s/cat’s mouth, pointing the animal’s head downward so water isn’t swallowed. Rub the gums and mouth to remove the toxin. This treatment is usually successful, but call your veterinarian immediately. It’s always best to avoid pet and human contact with any wildlife. You may not know what defense mechanism it may have. ~ Source: Florida Wildlife Extension ~ PAGE 16
