News from the Arbor Greene HOA From the Homeowners Association!! I am very happy to announce that all of Arbor Greene’s community leaders have come together and worked out a policy to enforce our covenants for parking on the street. Effective immediately, NO OVERNIGHT STREET PARKING IS ALLOWED. This is straight from the covenants, page 28. While the covenants are less clear for other aspects of street parking, they clearly state that overnight parking is not allowed. A new sign will be installed at the entrance to the community to notify everyone of this requirement. This is not a new or revised rule. This is from the original covenants of Arbor Greene. Street parking on our narrow streets causes a safety hazard and we have to address it. Every homeowner faces significant liability for negligence if our lack of enforcement results in death or additional injury from emergency equipment that can’t reach its destination. Admittedly, we have not been effective at enforcement of this covenant for the last several years. Countless hours have been invested to insure that we minimize the impact of this requirement. While this will not please everyone, it is critical that we manage risk that has potential financial liability for everyone. This is a serious matter and requires our attention as well as a serious solution. Enforcement will be through a couple of different avenues. 1st time violations will receive a violation sticker on the driver’s side window. Additional violations will result in more violations and fines. We are also going to work with the Tampa Police Department to issue parking tickets. The overnight parking policy impacts everyone – owners, residents, and guests. If you have guests, homeowners are responsible for making arrangements for parking. We are going to be aggressively enforcing this in the coming months.

Beware of the Love Bugs! Twice a year Florida experiences an invasion of tiny flies, known as “love bugs”. These tiny red and black bugs get their name from their ability to mate while in flight. Throughout the months of April and May and again in September, you will see these small insects “stacked” in tandem everywhere – all over your car, or home or your B-B-Q in the park. Thought a nuisance, they are harmless except for the damage often caused by their carcasses to your car’s paint. If you are new to Florida or planning to take a road trip, take note – go through the carwash routinely during the season – these little guys can take the paint off your car. In a pinch, you can also use dryer sheets to remove these bugs, just dampen the sheet and rinse thoroughly afterwards.

Message From Your Neighborhood Watch (NWA) Coordinators - Paul & Hally Boucher “Tips on Addressing Strangers Who Come to Your Home” Hello Arbor Greene (AG) Neighbors. We hope you’re enjoying the early Spring weather. We want to take a moment to thank all the residents who provided informational tips and support to new and ongoing investigations regarding a missing child, drug related concerns, and possible thefts. The reality is that no community can be 100% crime or trouble free, but your calls and emails to the Tampa Police Department (TPD) and NWA help to ensure our community remains one of the most secure in New Tampa. Our gates and guards keep out about 80% of the crime that most non-gated communities often deal with; the rest is up to us. So “thank you” for your continued caring and communication. This month, we wanted to offer some tips on addressing strangers who come to your home. One tactic that criminals will use is to pose as fake solicitors or door-to-door salesman, and business or government surveyors. The TPD continually urges residents to report suspicious activities like this and to avoid opening doors or inviting in these persons unless you know them or have verified their credentials. Fake solicitations can be used by criminals to gain information as to whether a home is secured by alarm or other means, whether valuables are easily assessable or viewable from windows, whether your home is occupied at certain times of the day, and to physically gain entry to a home if the resident opens the door to the fake solicitor. In the recent past, there were reports of fake ADT Security System representatives asking New Tampa homeowners to allow them to check their systems. These unannounced visitors may have been trying to check if homes had monitored security systems, try to disable alarm systems, or do the homeowner harm. These people carried clipboards, and some may have had fake ADT cards. The Tampa Police Department (TPD) advised residents to tell the solicitor, through the closed door, that you are checking his/her credentials and calling the TPD; if the person is legitimate, then he/she will have no reason to be worried. If the person takes off, then report this to the TPD immediately with a description of the person and their direction of travel. Whenever a stranger comes to your front door, you should use your best judgment to decide if you open your door. Many AG homes have some glass in their front doors and so you can talk to a visitor even if the door is closed. If you don’t have glass in your door, then consider having a “peep hole” installed so you can see who is outside your door. A minimum option is installing a “safety chain” on your door. However, having a safety chain may help you to open the door a bit so you can speak to strangers, but it cannot guarantee that they will not be able to force their way in once you open your door. Another option is having a camera or intercom system at your door to allow you to view or interact with people you are unfamiliar with. In short, you are not rude if you don’t open your door to strangers, but instead, you are keeping your home and family safe. In the past, AG residents have had strangers knock on their front doors at very early hours on a weekend. The residents made a wise choice and did not answer the door and then immediately called the TPD. In another case, during evening hours, a man claiming to be selling books became upset that the homeowner would not open their door to talk or let him in. The man refused to leave the homeowner’s front porch, but again, the homeowner made the correct decision and immediately called the TPD and the suspect quickly departed. As has occurred in the past, persons claiming to want to rent in AG or “learn about the area” have come to residents’ homes unannounced. You should use your best judgment in interacting with these persons as their questions could hide a possible criminal agenda. As a side note, if you rent your home, it’s always best to perform credit checks and verify valid references from renters before renting your property. This will help you to avoid a current scam which has unfortunately reached Arbor Greene. These renters move from rental to rental and stop paying rent shortly after moving in, leaving landlords to pursue them and go through the pain of lengthy eviction processes. Be cautious of persons you don’t know who request they or their children be allowed to use your bathroom or home phone as they may be trying to see the layout of or valuables in your home. Criminals have been known to unlock bathroom windows or doors when homeowners allow them to use the bathroom, and later use these unlocked windows or doors to enter a home. Thieves have also approached victims near their open garage doors to see what valuables are inside; this is another reason to keep your garage door closed when possible. PAGE 10

Message From Your Neighborhood Watch, continued If you see suspicious person(s) or activity, immediately call the TPD’s Suspicious Activity line (813-231-6130). If you think a crime is about to occur or has been committed against person(s) or property, then immediately dial 9-1-1. In either case, call the TPD from a safe location and do not confront suspicious person(s). The TPD will ask if you about the suspect(s) gender, age, race, clothing, height, weight, etc. and suspect(s) vehicle (including make, model, year, color, license plate number, etc.), if any. The TPD repeatedly asks us to inform AG residents that the TPD wants us to be their “eyes and ears,” watching for and immediately reporting suspicious activity and crimes. Emergency phone numbers on refrigerator magnets are available for FREE at the AG Clubhouse/Community Center. Please see the Clubhouse attendant about this free gift coordinated by your AG NWA Coordinators. If you would like to receive additional security tips and other relevant information from the TPD, please email us at ArborGreene-NWA@hotmail.com. Joining this email distribution group does not obligate you to any other NWA activity, but should help you and your family to be better informed and more secure, making AG an even better place to live. AG NWA is an all-volunteer run program overseen by the TPD. Thank you. Thank you.

Fun Facts Florida is not the southernmost state in the United States. Hawaii is farther south. The name Punta Gorda, which means, “fat point” when translated from Spanish. The moniker was given to the city because a broad part of the land in Punta Gorda juts into Charlotte Harbor. The harbor itself is somewhat unique, as it is the point where the Peace River meets the ocean. Ybor City was once known as the Cigar Capital of the World with nearly 12,000 tabaqueros (cigar-makers) employed in 200 factories. Ybor City produced an estimated 700 million cigars a year at the industry’s peak. Venice is known as the Shark Tooth Capital of the World. Collecting prehistoric sharks teeth has been a favorite pastime of visitors and residents of the Venice area for years Nearly 80 percent of the states intake of sweet Atlantic white shrimp is harvested in Amelia Island waters. Two million pounds of shrimp are delivered to Fernandina docks annually. Miami Beach pharmacist Benjamin Green invented the first suntan cream in 1944. He accomplished this development by cooking cocoa butter in a granite coffee pot on his wife’s stove. PAGE 12

Fertilizer Management The City of Tampa Fertilizer Ordinance (2011-74) regulates the use and sale of fertilizers containing nitrogen and/or phosphorous. The Ordinance was enacted to reduce the potential for these nutrients to be carried into our waters with storm run off. The City Ordinance establishes a restricted period from June 1 – September 30, when application of fertilizer containing nitrogen and/or phosphorous to the landscape is not allowed. Fertilizer isn’t a pollutant when it is applied to the landscape. However, if too much fertilizer is used or it is applied at the wrong time it can wash off the landscape and flow untreated into bays and streams. Once in the water, fertilizer can stimulate the growth of harmful algae and aquatic plant growth.
