Letter To Family And Friends Of Girlfriends Talk From Founder And Editor –in- Chief Janice L. Carter

Hello everyone, I hope all is well. Where did the month of April go so fast? It’s like a curse and a blessing, time is moving so fast it seems as if you can hardly get anything done anymore. Yet, you have to be grateful to see another day. And although this is the rainy month, don’t let it get you down. Think positive. Think of all the good the rain does. Rain soothes you, rain cools you down, rain help your flowers and garden grow and also produces rainbows! If you think April’s issue had a lot of good stuff in it wait until you read this month’s issue. The month of May has so much going on, Mother’s Day for one, some of us still have our mother’s around and some of us are less fortunate but keep in mind that although no one could ever replace your birth mother there are some people who have embraced you as one of their very own, don’t forget to show them some love. The month of memories, when we reflect on the love ones we have lost and the service people who have lost their lives in the call of duty. May seems like an emotional month, what do you think? Let’s try exploring other cultures and their celebrations…like Cinco de Mayo , although it is a Mexican celebration, a party is a party!

Memorial Day is a United States federal holiday observed on the last Monday of May (May 30 in 2011). Formerly known as Decoration Day, it commemorates U.S. soldiers who died while in the military service.

Cinco de Mayo (Spanish for "fifth of May") is a holiday held on May 5 that commemorates the Mexican army's unlikely victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862, under the leadership of General Ignacio Zaragoza Seguín. It is celebrated primarily in the state of Puebla and in the United States. While Cinco de Mayo sees limited significance in Mexico itself, the date is observed nationwide mostly in the United States as a celebration of Mexican heritage and pride. Cinco de Mayo is not Mexico's Independence Day, the most important national patriotic holiday in Mexico.

The strength of a mother is as the power of thousands who stand behind her.

“I’LL ALWAYS LOVE MY MAMA, SHE’S MY FAVORITE GIRL… I’LL ALWAYS LOVE MY MA, SHE BROUGHT ME IN THIS WORLD” Of course, those are the words from “I’ll Always Love My Mama” by The Intruders. This is one of the many songs that we will be listening to as we celebrate up coming Mother’s Day. Looking at our history there were many famous mothers. More recently the mothers of the first African American President Barrack (Ann Dunham) and Michelle Obama (Marian Lois Robinson) are possibly the most famous mothers of my time. There are millions of exceptional mothers in this world today that go uncelebrated for their work and efforts and soon we will celebrate them and their contributions to our lives. Mother: A female who has given birth to offspring. The definition is vague and seems to reflect the thinking of being a mother today. In the past a mother was the rock of the family. Mom would be the support for the father and the children. Slowly as roles and times changed the mother became the father and the mother. She was the worker, the teacher, the disciplinarian, the therapists, the coach, the taxi….everything! Mothers have not had an easy road and in many instances have proven that as a “mother” they have more emotional strength and determination than 10 men. I can remember watching my grandmother (mother) who after my mother abandoned me single handedly raised 5 of her own took me in and raised me while working a fulltime job and maintaining her own home. Her road to becoming a single parent was paved with brutal abuse and alcoholism at the hands of my grandfather. After he abandoned her, my mother tightened her bootstraps moved herself and 5 children from the projects to her own home. She didn’t drink or do drugs and was always home and available whenever we needed her. There was no stream of men…although mom did have a boyfriend. After my last aunt and uncle moved on and all had been pushed to attend a college it was my mother and I. She supported me in every aspect of my life. She came to my basketball games, showed me love, gave me my first box of condoms, taught me to stand up for my self, she even came to visit me my first time in jail and told me it would be her last time ever….lol. My mother made sure I stayed grounded in a world that was slowly changing from the world she knew. Growing up on the far south side of Chicago in the Wild 100’s was not easy and as I watched many of my peers’ parents fall my mother stood firm. She tried to teach me discipline and the beliefs of God and respect that she was taught. A small beautiful woman, my mother had the toughness and courage of a gladiator. Growing up I listened to the words of wisdom about life and right and wrong that I still carry with me. “Mother love is the fuel that enables a normal human being to do the impossible.” ~Marion C. Garretty, quoted in A Little Spoonful of Chicken Soup for the Mother's Soul “A mother is the truest friend we have, when trials heavy and sudden, fall upon us; when adversity takes the place of prosperity; when friends who rejoice with us in our sunshine desert us; when trouble thickens around us, still will she cling to us, and endeavor by her kind precepts and counsels to dissipate the clouds of darkness, and cause peace to return to our hearts.” ~Washington Irving So where are we today as far as Mothers are concerned? Without a doubt times have drastically changed. I posed a question to women…what does it mean to be a mother and why does it seem like men have a preference for a “Baby Mama” vs. a woman with mothering instincts and qualities. The responses were somewhat standard when it comes to what it means to be a mother. “Being a mother is an honor and a privilege -‐ not a right. I know way too many gals who have babies but aren't mothers. You are responsible for another life, and your life changes to where everything you do is now for your kid, no one else.” “Being a mother is a huge responsibility and a wonderful experience. It is a chance for me to show true love, acceptance and nurturing. I love this aspect of my life. My son is a pure joy and wonderful addition to my life.”

“I think being a mother is a gift and a blessing and something that should be cherished.” “The love from a child is the purest truest and most gratifying of all feelings a woman can ever experience.” “The heart of a mother is a deep abyss at the bottom of which you will always find forgiveness.” ~Honoré de Balzac

It would seem that with so many love and heart filled sentiments As a Mother I believe and know that children need and want guidelines that being a mother would still have the commitment foundation and rules. Those are the things we as parents give to our children to that it was born from. The new mother is a mix of changing times show them we love and care about them. It helps deflect the peer and neglect. The new generation of mothers (some not all) seem pressure they are bombarded with daily. It’s so much easier to deflect to be engulfed in a more self-‐indulgent form of mothering. More the negative things and the wrongs things presented to them, by being and more we see the influence of pop culture guiding mothers to able to say, “My Mother won’t let me.” a friend zone with their offspring. One of the most disturbing “I think there are bad apples in every bunch and that every examples of this move would be the television shows that are woman should not have a child. Especially if they don't know or highly rated today. Maury Povich has really taken the lack of appreciate the life they are responsible for, but only they can be the seriousness for mothering to an epic low. This is not judge of that. :-‐)” entertainment but a horrific look into what mothers who have “The state of mothers today there is really NONE. The Baby Mama that is offensive random sex and try their hardest to take crazy behavior to its’ takes her body and ability to give birth not only as a joke but as a means breaking point. The concern for family image and morality has to acquire material items for herself. Her intentions are to intentionally vanished. Ask DR. Robinson

From the Live Sex Talk Blogtalk Radio Show, Dr. Robinson a.k.a The Love Doctor sets out to help you seek the answers you need. Please remember these answers are sincerely of ones experience and opinions only.

Is a man capable or have the ability to love a woman as deeply as a woman can love a man? Nymadi Williams- Columbus, Ohio Of course, it all depends on what type of love this man is looking for! I have seen men deeply in love and it is a beautiful thing, but truth is some men just really want security without the strings, commitment or responsibilities. Although some men love differently than others you may truly never know because most men lack emotions and expression. Keep in mind, it is nothing that you can force or pressure them into. I can almost guarantee when the moment arrives you will surly know that he is deeply in love with you. P.S I heard the eyes tell it all

Did relationships back in the day have more substance or did they have more acceptances?

Ms. King- Columbus, Ohio I think relationships had more acceptances back in the day! People had more tolerance for a bad situation/relationships, today some people bail out at the first sign of distress. A good and a bad thing. If the relationship is abusive you should leave but if he or she just gets on your nerves from time to time, then you should learn how to work that out. No one is perfect, there are no perfect relationships and at some point in your life you will have to learn to work it out instead of running. That’s what will build substance knowing your relationships worth.

What is the true meaning of the word Love? Looking for Love in Ohio-Columbus, Ohio

Love is an action word. Also a word that is often misused. The words you are probably waiting to hear are someone to say that they are ” In love with you “; I have learned there is a big difference. The word “Love “seems to have the same meaning as adore (to me). I Love those shoes, I love that car, and I love that hairdo! As I said before it is loosely used. So the best thing to do is ask a person their interpretation of love.

Ray earned her law degree and became the first African-American woman lawyer in the United States and the first woman lawyer admitted to the D.C. Bar Association. D.C. as it was the only school allowing African-American girls to attend. Attending Howard University In 1869 she became both a teacher and a student at Howard University. Howard University was established to provide education for freed slaves and their descendants. However, even Howard University continued the practice of not allowing women to enroll in their law program. But Charlotte E. Ray found a way around her gender. She used her initials and applied at Howard University as “C. E. Ray.” She graduated from the Howard Law School with a law degree in 1872, becoming the second woman to receive a law degree (Arabella Mansfield was the first), the first African-American woman to receive a law degree and the first woman to be admitted to the District of Columbia Bar Association. Racial, Gender Prejudices Close Practice Upon receiving her degree, Ray opened her own law practice in the District of Columbia area. Her focus at Howard had been commercial law and her practice specialized in that area. Due to racial and gender discrimination and prejudices, she was unable to maintain her practice and returned to teaching in Brooklyn. Myra Bradwell owned The Chicago Legal News. She was also a woman lawyer who had passed the Illinois bar exam but was denied call by the Illinois court. Bradwell wrote this about Charlotte Ray: "Miss Ray ... although a lawyer of decided ability, on account of prejudice was not able to obtain sufficient business and had to give up ... active practice." There is apparently only one pleading in her name - a family law case (Gadley v Gadley). She was later active in the women’s suffrage movement and the National Association of Colored Women. She also married a man whose surname was Fraim, but little more about her life after Howard University is known.

Ray passed away January 4, 1911. Today, the Greater Washington Area Chapter Women Lawyers Division National Bar Association presents the annual “Charlotte E. Ray award” to an outstanding African-American woman from the District of Columbia Bar Association.

Can The World Really Rest Now? Bin Laden killed by elite team Declaring the killing of Osama bin Laden "a good day for America," President Barack Obama said Monday the world was safer without the alQaida terrorist and mastermind of the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks. His administration used DNA testing to help confirm that American forces in Pakistan had in fact killed bin Laden, as U.S. officials sought to erase all doubt about the stunning news. What are your feelings towards the death of Osama Bin Laden? As I listened to the radio it seems as if emotions are mixed with happiness and fear of what’s to come. Thunda I was invited by Eric Goshay of 2196 Productionz and Liz Boss- Lady Walton to attend the Southern Empire Mixtape Tour event at Skully’s. First off let me say, I admire anyone who can put these types of events together, it really takes a lot and both gave me such a warm welcome you would have thought they had invited me into their home. So my hat off to Eric Goshay and Boss-Lady! I love seeing talented people. I also love being in an atmosphere where people are there to have a good time and enjoy themselves.

Sometime these events get started a little later then they are suppose to, so you have to have that staying power. Which I believe is slowly draining out of me but I knew I had to make the most out of the time I was there. I met a few people and in the short conversations with each of them, I could just feel their passion. During the warm up I caught wind of a songbird, I didn’t catch her name but as soon as I do, I will be letting you all know to be on the look out for her. I met some pretty cool people like Jay Davy, Woody and Kaine of FHSP (F@*# Haters Stack Paper) and GC Da Biz. FHSP has been putting in work since 2005 and has recorded with national artists. They have 3 mix tapes “Swagger To The Inauguration”, “In A Days Work” (which was written in 24 hours). They also have solo projects. J Woody’s “ Untamed In This Game” and Kaine’s “Destined 4 Success”also be on the look out for J. Woody ‘s “ Killing Them Softly”. GC DA BIZ (Empire/Deepest Ent) Scarlet and Grey mixtape is due out next month (May). He has performed all over Columbus with other local artists. He is currently working on “His-Story In The Making”. GC DA Biz says these shows bring light to the city, and a great way to get his voice heard. The one who stood out the most to me (and not because of his shiny mouthpiece but his personality greeted me before his name was even mentioned. “Thunda” a name such as this deserves and demands attention. He had so much charisma. As he explained his journey to me, I could see it extending out as he spoke it, just like a movie. He was far from a “Monster” which was one of his singles I checked out on Youtube as well as a single called “I’m On It” and “Lonely People”, which stood out to me because it wasn’t your typical money, cars and woman song. It was actually a very touching song. Make sure you go to Youtube and check him out.

Thunda is working on volume 3 of “Thunda Garden” and says you can download Volume 1 and 2 from Livemixtape.com and Datpiff.com. Ladies and gentlemen I could be late but I recently came across some interesting information. Just when you think you have heard it all, it is always more to it. Ladies the cranky days and mood swing behavior that men are so quick to point out might need to be revaluated. Now you have to sit back and ask yourself was it your mood swing or his at that moment. Lets see what the experts have to say…

Male Menopause Have you noticed your father, brother, or partner acting strangely lately? Does he forget things, seem lethargic, or wake up sweating? If so, he may be suffering from male menopause. While this likely sounds unbelievable to most women, more and more people are suggesting that male menopause really does exist. Like female menopause, menopause in men seems to involve a drop in hormone levels around middle age. Often referred to with contempt as the "mid-life crisis," men may really be suffering from a documented illness. So grab the man in your life and make him aware of what he may be facing when he reaches middle age. What is Male Menopause?
Male menopause, also called andropause, refers to a gradual decline in a man's testosterone levels. Not all men will go through andropause and it is unknown why those that will, do. Testosterone is the male sex hormone that is responsible for creating and releasing sperm, initiating sex drive and providing muscular strength. Hormone levels tend to peak around the ages of 15 to 18 in most males. Sometime during his mid to late 20s, a man's hormone levels will begin to drop slowly. Usually, these hormone levels will remain at a healthy level, but some men will see their testosterone levels drop significantly by the time they are 40. By age 50, half of all men will experience a significant reduction in testosterone levels, causing a variety of uncomfortable ailments. Causes of Male Menopause
Male menopause can occur naturally in some men. More often than not, though, andropause is triggered by illness, depression, dementia, and obesity. Certain diseases that attack the heart and lungs also seem to affect the production of testosterone. Men who have had autoimmune diseases or cancer seem to be at an increased risk for low testosterone levels.

Andropause vs. Menopause
Menopause in men is not entirely similar to female menopause. Female menopause involves the complete decline of sex hormones. During menopause, your estrogen levels will decrease and then disappear, causing acute symptoms and the complete loss of fertility. Men will never lose their fertility completely during andropause. Testosterone will continue to be produced, as will sperm, permitting a man to have children well into his 80s. For this reason, there is much debate over whether this testosterone drop should be referred to as the male "menopause." What are the Symptoms of Male Menopause?
Male menopause symptoms are very similar to those experienced by women during menopause, only much less intense. Common menopause symptoms include hot flashes, night sweats, fatigue, muscle and joint aches. Men also suffer from emotional symptoms like mood swings, irritability, depression, and listlessness. Sex and menopause in men is also an issue of concern. The most common symptom experienced by men with low testosterone is a diminished sex drive. 80% of men with documented andropause complain of low libido and an inability to maintain a strong erection. Like women going through menopause, men can begin to feel like they no longer enjoy sex. If this is the case, a visit to the doctor can really help men to feel more in control of their physical and sexual wellbeing. Treatment Options
Men often do not seek treatment for andropause. A lot of men feel Uncomfortable speaking about their symptoms and, in the past, doctors haven't taken men's menopause seriously. Signs of menopause in men can also be difficult to diagnose. Thanks to new studies, though, doctors have become more aware of this problem and are beginning to realize the importance of treatment. The primary treatment for andropause is Testosterone Replacement Therapy (TRT). Like estrogen replacement in women, testosterone replacement aims to bring hormonal levels back up to a healthy level. Once testosterone levels are increased, most men begin to experience fewer symptoms. Unfortunately, testosterone replacement doesn't always work well to combat erectile dysfunction. Because this is such a severe symptom for most men, other treatments for erectile dysfunction should be investigated. It is important for men to understand what is happening to their bodies as they age. Andropause does not affect all men and its symptoms have varying degrees of severity. However, if you know someone who is affected by andropause, encourage him to talk about his symptoms with a doctor.

One Nation Under A Groove By Frank Comer This Groove is inadequate and produces a kind of mental awareness that functions below the threshold of consciousness and the people do not realize that they are being manipulated. This Groove is a systematic attack on the mind, prohibiting those from realizing their full potential as productive and positive people. A mind that has lost its capacity to generate common sense and rationalization has had its growth restricted in the most important development stage, it now becomes an ignorant mind, wanting to express itself, but not having the necessary capabilities to do so it cannot comprehend or communicate in a effective manner. Those who are consumed by the images of reality TV, music videos that are dehumanizing, degrading and disrespectful along with the misrepresentation of rap music and the obsession of materialistic items, have a much-distorted view of reality. These individuals are being powered by subliminal messaging and this type of mind altering begins at a young age; where these person began imitating their environment by substituting positive for negatives, further confusing the unsuspecting minds and leaving behind a residue of self –destruction. Sensationalism blocks a person’s ability to understand and reason with things that are observed. This observation creates allegiances to items; where perception and success are based on what you have and how much you have. A person draws a conclusion that gives that person and those who view him as “The Man”, a false sense hope and transparent shield of reality with its inability to hide the many attributes that under mine a person’s internal and external self –worth if these systematic attacks continue to be ignored or doubted as major contributors to a generation that is “Moovin’& Groovin’”than the infiltration and molding of the minds of those who are unaware and unresponsive; their minds will remain in a captive state, and in this form of captivity…If you have a mind, you control what it thinks.

1 . Take responsibility for your actions. When a situation spirals out of control the first thing you must do is recognize the part you played. What did you do to contribute to the problem? What could you have done differently in order to get a different outcome? It's often easy to point the finger of blame at others but a part of being mature is to look at yourself and take full responsibility for all of your actions. If you have a hard time trying to decipher right from wrong, place yourself in the shoes of the other person and see how you would like it if someone treated you the way you may have treated them. 2. Extend a sincere apology if necessary. As human beings, we all make mistakes. If you see where you were wrong in a situation it's okay to say I'm sorry. If the apology is sincere others will notice. Don't worry about whether or not the apology will be accepted. Do your part, extend an apology for your actions and make 3. Pick your battles. Avoiding confrontation may be an easier task for some than it is for others. If you are combative, admit that to yourself. The only way to fix a character flaw is to first acknowledge it. After acknowledging the fact that you may have an argumentative personality, you will find it easier to control your temper. If someone speaks to you in an unacceptable tone or manner, it is not always necessary to react. Picking your battles means knowing when and how to respond in a particular situation. Also keep in mind, sometimes no response is the best response.

4 . Don't sweat the small stuff. Is it really necessary to turn a molehill into a mountain? In many cases, it's not that serious and problems often work themselves out. Remember, your outlook determines your outcome so if you make it your business to take a small problem and turn it into something bigger chances are you will create a dilemma and chaos which will eventually lead to drama. 5 . Eliminate negative people from your circle. In many cases you may find yourself in drama filled situations because of the company you keep. Many of us don't like to admit it, but your friends can have a major influence on the way you behave. Surround yourself with positive people who live peaceful lifestyles. If your friends are drama-‐free, nine times out of ten they won't tolerate your dramatic behavior. You will be forced to change your ways (by picking up their good habits) or eventually the friendships will suffer. 6 . Learn to be happy. If you are constantly caught up in drama, chances are you are unhappy about the ways things are going in your life. Spend time with yourself and dig deep to figure out what it is that you are most unhappy about. Make a decision to improve who you are regardless of circumstance and look for ways to become the best person you can be. Search for reasons to smile! Life is short but valuable. Don't consume your time and energy with confrontation, negativity and drama.

7 . You may not be able to change others, the things they do or the way they approach you but you do have the ability to change who you are. If you alter your ways and make a decision to be a more positive person, you will attract positive people who won't provoke you or cause you to act out. You'll be amazed at how things that may have bothered you in the past don't have an affect on you after you decide to live life minus the drama.
