In addition, Ukrainian refugees have been welcomed into local homes although the process of arriving has been prolonged. The latest initiative before Wendover News goes to press is the Budgens offer to match donations £ for £. Just go to the shop and add a £can of your choice to your regular purchases. Many helpers want to give quietly but if you send details to editor@ wendovernews.co.uk, your fundraising activities can be included on our webpage wendovernews. co.uk/events, no charge.

Lotus Cars coming to Wendover

We are familiar with the few remaining World War II pilots invited to visit Aces High in Wendover. Now they are reaching out to embrace classic cars, too. On Saturday 7 May Lotus drivers have been invited to Aces High in Station Approach. Keep your eyes peeled on all entrances to Wendover, they will be coming from every direction, see also page 14 and online at https://bit.ly/3OmTIbi.

Many Wendover people have been at the forefront of initiatives to help the people of Ukraine, not least by flying flags showing solidarity. At the very beginning (the invasion started on 24 February) there were sales to raise money to send to the Disasters Emergency Committee. Lots of smaller initiatives have happened, including schoolchildren like the above from Wendover Junior School.

Rennie Grove Memorial Woodland Parish Council and to everyone in Wendover for ARTY PARTY your ongoing support.” welcomed into Community Orchard • Tuesdays 10 to 11 am at Wendover Library Rennie Grove is delighted that it has been able to relocate its memorial woodland into the village’s community orchard at Rope Walk Meadow, Chapel Lane in Wendover. The charity is hugely grateful to Wendover Parish Council for its support in enabling this to happen and being so supportive.

Originally planted in 2014, each of the 60 trees in the orchard represents a member of the village community who fought and died during WW1. Now well established, the orchard is already a beautiful, calm and peaceful space for remembrance, and one which Rennie Grove hopes will be further enhanced with its planting of a number of native species trees and sensory hedging. A bench has also been installed to allow visitors to sit and reflect and enjoy the beautiful scenery. Tracey Hancock, Director of Fundraising, said: “We are so pleased that our wonderful community can walk and visit somewhere special again in memory of loved ones we’ve been privileged to care for. Thank you once again to Wendover

May is Make Your Will Month

Rennie Grove’s annual Will-writing offer returns in May. You can write or update your Will through local solicitors participating in the scheme, and they will waive their basic Will-writing fee for a donation to Rennie Grove. Writing a Will and keeping it up to date ensures your loved ones will be looked after when you’re no longer here to do it. Without a Will, loved ones will not automatically receive what you want to leave to them. Participating solicitors in Bucks include BWK Solicitors (with offices in Chalfont St Giles and Stone), D C Kaye & Co (with premises in Amersham, Prestwood and Wendover) and Horwood & James LLP Solicitors in Aylesbury. These law firms will be available to take your bookings for this special deal after 1 April 2022. Each has a limited number of appointments available so book early to avoid disappointment. Road Safety Projects

Bucks Council are administering the HS2 Road Safety Fund which is supporting local improvement initiatives. During April the cycleway on Aylesbury Road has been extended to reach the station, with the definition of cycle tracks on various local roads (see photos). Applications are being accepted now for suggested projects for the second “tranche” of Archaeologists at work funding, until the end of May. Further details can We’re pleased to see that Noise, Vibration and Air be found on our whs2.org website. Quality monitoring has also been installed prior to the start of demolition of the cottages and excavation of the cutting. HS2’s contractors are required to abide by the “Code of Construction Practice” which is available on their website, along with the monthly reports of the Environmental Monitoring measurements.

New cycleway markings near Wendover Station Noise & air quality monitoring at Ellesborough Road & Bacombe Lane This month has also seen the creation of the new right of way across the Ellesborough Road field, which should allow walkers on the Aylesbury Ring to get from Wellwick Farm to Wendover despite the closure of the two existing paths that cross the cutting needed for construction of the “green

Meanwhile the Chilterns Cycleway route between Wendover and Dunsmore is still affected by the ongoing closure of Small Dean Lane at the south end of the bypass. Cyclists are currently being forced to use the narrow 60mph section of the A413 at Small Dean to get to Dunsmore Lane, and there is no pavement currently available for pedestrians. We are working with Bucks Council and HS2 to address this, and hope to have better news on this next month.

Bucks Council’s CCTV monitoring cameras are still at the junction of Church Lane and South Street, so that reports of HGV lorries working for HS2 passing through Wendover can be followed up. They welcome email notification of the date and time of any instances to EWRANDHS2enquiries@ buckinghamshire.gov.uk . The system is expected to be in place for only 3 months to determine the scale of the problem, so please report any lorries that you think are working for HS2.

Fundraising & Ideas

If you would like to help us “Do what’s right for Wendover”, have a look at our website whs2. org where you’ll find details of what we’re doing, and our ‘donate’ button which leads to our fundraising page. All contributions are gratefully received to help us fight the HS2 Scheme before it’s built. If you have ideas and suggestions that would mitigate the community impact, then get in touch at enquiries@whs2.org and we’ll assist however we can. Remember that the HS2 Helpdesk is available 24 hours a day to handle any complaints on 08081 434 434.

Happy Anniversary Aston Wine Club! Aston Wine Club is 26 years old and looking forward to celebrating with a special anniversary event on 20 May. The Club was founded in 1996, by a group of friends living in and around Aston Clinton with the aim of offering the chance to meet various wine enthusiasts and broaden their knowledge of wines, but above all to enjoy themselves. The friends put together a small committee and decided that it would be a non-spitting club! They booked Buckland Village Hall where we still meet, though we do not have to scare away mice before tastings these days!

or theme. Eight wines are usually tasted, with a light supper being served in the middle of the evening. The Club is very friendly and relaxed and tries to cover all areas of the wine-making world, as it is geared towards "appreciation" of wine rather than only fine wines. We not only sample wines from the well-known and established wine regions of the world, both old and new world, but also from those lesser known and emerging regions such as Brazil, Uruguay, Turkey and of course England! Our experts are extremely diverse, ranging from the highly qualified members of the 'Wine Educators Association’ to single wine importers and merchants.

Those aims have certainly been achieved over the last 26 years and continue to be the ethos of the club. Each month a presenter is invited to host a tasting of wines, focusing on a specific region

We usually meet on the third Friday of each month, and we always give new members a very warm welcome. For more information, please contact us at www.astonwineclub.co.uk.

April heralds the end of our indoor season and the start of matches outdoors. We already have started regular grass cutting even though it isn't growing much yet. The green has survived the winter fairly well, despite the attention of a band of rooks who decided to go into the turf cutting business. We resorted to three sinister black kites flying from long poles as deterrence which worked well apart from going on walkabout in the gales we had. At present it looks like Blackpool Beach as the kites have been given honourable retirement and been replaced by children's windmills.

The Aylesbury Road site was first offered to Wendover Baptists because their building from 1649 was in need of refurbishment. Instead, Father Arnold Sloots bought it for a Roman Catholic Church in the mid-1950s. The Foundation Stone was laid in May 1961 but lockdown prevented a proper celebration last year. Instead, an anniversary garden was laid out for use by the community of Wendover.

Schools World Book Day at CWA

Chiltern Way Academy Wendover Campus celebrated World Book Day in style. Staff and students came dressed as some of their favourite book characters. Students in year 7 and 8 also got to participate in a book scavenger hunt around campus. Keeping reading alive is one of our main goals, and this day is always the perfect time to showcase our love for reading. Students have already been overheard planning their book character costumes for next year. Reading is an essential skill that opens so many doors for students, and allows them to excel in all subject areas. By keeping books and reading at the forefront of our time in school, we can help develop opportunities for students that will carry them through life. Paul Coffey, Head of Campus

Tribute: Barry Collins Barry Collins was loved by so many people in Wendover, not only his family with whom he worked in close harmony but all his customers with whom he made friends. Barry was an Essex boy, born on 28 October 1945 in Shoeburyness, one of the original Baby Boomers who experienced and perpetuated the optimism of a generation who had lived through a long and terrible war and were determined that life in the future would be better for everyone. His family moved to Aston Clinton and that's where he grew up as a proud Buckinghamshire Man. He lived in the area for the rest of his life. His background was in the motor trade and he had worked tirelessly to understand it inside out so it was only natural that he would think of giving access to his expertise

to members of the public as well as those in the trade. It was lucky for us that he found premises in Wendover and was able to open Wendover Motor Spares in the 1980s. We all discovered what a gem of a human being he was. His family describes him as a loving devoted husband, fantastic father and an amazing grandfather. He was bright and cheery, full of fun and always there to help anyone. They also describe their devastation at his death. They would like to thank all customers and friends for the encouragement they gave Barry since he started the family business many years ago. You have all made his dreams come true and he enjoyed every day he spent in Wendover. Thank you for your continued assistance during this hard

time. Barry’s family would like to say a big thank you to the people of Wendover, friends and family who turned out to show their respects on Friday 18 March. The support shown by everyone was amazing and Barry would have been extremely proud to see how much he was liked. In 2012, Barry was diagnosed with myeloma, a rare type of cancer which affects plasma cells in the bone marrow, weakening the immune system and causing damage to bones. Whilst myeloma is treatable, there is currently no cure. During his treatment, Barry met and befriended many other people also suffering from myeloma and wished to raise money to find more treatments and a cure. Donations to the Royal Marsden Cancer Charity’s myeloma research can be made by clicking on bit.ly/3hDhVLk.

Local Face: Father Paul Fr Paul Villangapara MOP, a dynamic priest and senior member of the Missionaries of the Poor (MOP), https://missionariesofthepoor. org/ will be serving St Anne's, Wendover, for a year. The Missionaries of the Poor is a Pontifical International Religious Congregation of Brothers and Priests dedicated to "joyful service with Christ on the Cross", freely offering their humble works of mercy to the poorest of the poor. MOP does similar works to those of St Mother Teresa of Calcutta, serving the most vulnerable in ghettoes and slum communities, their lives freely dedicated to the service of the homeless, sick, disabled, and destitute children and adults. Fr Paul was born and raised in Kerala, India, in a very devout Catholic family. In 1994 after completing BA in English and Hindi Literature, he joined MOP. He completed his studies for the priesthood in Canada (St Philip's Seminary), USA (Franciscan University, Steubenville, Ohio) and Philippines (Holy

Rosary Major Seminary), ordained Priest in the Philippines.

Fr Paul is a very loving, caring, and kind person. During his free time, he likes to travel, read books and share about his faith. He believes that his serving experience among many different ethnicities has contributed positively to his faith and personal growth. The people he has served have helped broaden his understanding of the diverse expressions of different cultures' love of, and devotion to, our one true God, by keeping alive their traditions, languages, and customs, as an important part of their faith.

Over the years Fr Paul Father Paul in Kenya has served faithfully and inspired many hearts all over the world in his ministry, and has helped to pioneer and establish major mission centers, homes, and schools for the poor, in the Philippines, India, Jamaica and Kenya. He has conducted multiple retreats, mission He will be with us at St Anne's and OLOL talks, days of prayers for religious and laity in during his sabbatical, at the invitation of St the USA, India, and Kenya.
