Wendover Children Raise £300 for Ukraine and the DEC!

A group of local schoolchildren (photo front page) have raised over £300 for the Disasters Emergency Committee at a Saturday morning training session of Wendover Junior Football Club.

The nine year old friends from Wendover C of E Junior School were inspired by other fundraising in their school and decided they could make bracelets and cakes to sell and raise money for the people of Ukraine. Bella Gaglione, who plays in the Wendover Juniors FC Girls Team, joined forces with friends Abigail Blackmore-Squires, Ava Bell and Bella’s 7 year old brother Xander to make dozens of sweet treats and jewellery to sell.

Gareth Kynaston, Headteacher at Wendover CofE said, “We’re so proud to see our pupils living the school values of Respect, Responsibility, Reflection and Resilience through this fundraising activity and delighted they have been inspired by the discussions in school.”

Wendover Junior Football Club told us, “We’re delighted that our weekly training sessions provided the audience for this brilliant community activity - well done and thank you to everyone who supported them.”

Covid hit our April Meeting. By the time this comes to print, Trevor Fawcett, who is President of The Gladiolus Society, who was to have talked to us in May, will have spoken to us. John Marshall is confident he will speak on Spring and Summer vegetable growing on his allotment, at 2.30pm on 5 May, cost £3.00. Plenty of hints for us to pick up.

Our March coach outing to RHS Hyde Hall took place successfully. On Thursday 16 June, we plan to go to Serge Hill and the Barn, at Bedmond, near Abbots Langley. Serge Hill is the family home of Tom Smith, a renowned landscape architect, winner of Gold awards for garden design at Chelsea. His sister has created a walled garden at the Barn. Travel by car, lifts can be arranged. Cost £24.00 and £12.00 respectively for non-members, booking through Diane, on 07966 155775.

Wendover Bowls Club

April heralds the end of our indoor season and the start of matches outdoors. We already have started regular grass cutting even though it isn't growing much yet. The green has survived the winter fairly well, despite the attention of a band of rooks who decided to go into the turf cutting business. We resorted to three sinister black kites flying from long poles as deterrence which worked well apart from going on walkabout in the gales we had. At present it looks like Blackpool Beach as the kites have been given honourable retirement and been replaced by children's windmills.

This year we will be able to enjoy our opening season supper which was cancelled last year due to Covid. Another sign that things are slowly getting back to normal. Let's hope that the resurgence in infection rates doesn't set us back again as we have a full fixture list.

Don't forget that we will hold open evenings throughout May every Friday from 6 o'clock. If you would like to give bowling a go all we ask is that you wear flat shoes that won't damage the green. A friendly welcome awaits...come give it a whirl!
