Increasing Biodiversity

Research undertaken by Earth.org in October 2021 has revealed that the UK has lost almost half of its wildlife and plant species since the beginning of this century as a result of human and land development. Once a species is gone, it is gone forever so if we are to avoid an ecological meltdown, we urgently need to take action to reverse this decline.

This month we’re sharing three ways that everyone can increase biodiversity to help nature thrive.

1. Join the legions of gardeners across the country and support Plantlife’s No Mow May campaign. It doesn’t ask you to do much, in fact, it asks you to not do anything at all… Just lock up your lawnmower on May 1st and let the wildflowers in your lawn bloom, providing a feast of nectar for our hungry pollinators.

2. Throughout April, Climate Action Wendover distributed wildflower seeds to households in Wendover and the surrounding villages. All you need to do is plant your seeds in the garden or container and collectively we will create 11,500 square metres of wildflowers which is equivalent to 3 football pitches to strengthen the existing B-line. Please visit our website for more information and complete the form to register your Bee Square. https:// www.climateactionwendover.org/beesquared

3. Volunteer some of your time to support local projects. Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxon Wildlife Trust have lots of opportunities to get involved from taking part in an event to helping wildlife on your doorstep https:// www.bbowt.org.uk/get-involved

Individual gardens may be small, but they account for an estimated 10 million acres of land across the country which is more than all the nature reserves combined. Gardens create important green links between urban nature reserves and the wider countryside, forming vital wildlife corridors.
