Remembrance 2021

At the time of going to press, all indications are that the Remembrance Sunday Parade on Sunday, 14 November will go ahead as usual at 2.30pm on the Manor Waste. Yarn poppies will be fixed to the railings on or near 31 October. Feel free to add your own.

26 November Watch out for A413 road closures overnight and overnight sheet piling in Small Dean to protect the Chiltern Rail line from future HS2 work. Engineering work on the TfL line further south is causing weekend disruption. This latter is NOT HS2 related.

Hedge clearance in Bacombe Lane, photo taken on Saturday 16 October

Work is progressing on the temporary relief road for Nash Lee Road and an access road through the Ellesborough Road field. Once complete, some Ellesborough Road houses will be demolished in association with the trench to be dug for the cut and cover "green tunnel". The Rennie Grove plaque was removed from the Memorial Wood near Ellesborough Road when trees were removed for this same tunnel. It has been reinstated in the Community Orchard.

HS2 activity

All locals are now aware that HS2 activity is in full swing in the Wendover area. We even hit the TV news as protesters revealed that they had been Northbound traffic jams tunnelling between on the A413 from Sunday their two camps on 10 October the A413 near the entrance to Boswells. This made it more difficult for the National Eviction Team to carry out their work. The traffic jams were not continuous but rush hour had longer queues than usual.

Tricky times ahead

Despite the recent disappointing correspondence from Andrew Stephenson, MP to Rob Butler, MP following his July visit, both the Parish Council Group and the Mitigation Group are continuing to fight for the best mitigation of HS2 for Wendover and surrounding villages.

developments in Bucks are required to provide enough information to run a detailed traffic model and demonstrate that their work will not cause excessive disruption before planning permission is granted. It appears HS2 considers this rule does not apply to them.

encourage all groups to submit their pitches for mitigation funding. If you have ideas and suggestions that would mitigate the community impact, then get in touch (at enquiries@whs2. org) and we’ll assist however we can.

If you witness poor behaviour or see a lorry in Wendover, take a picture and send to enquiries@whs2.org. We will use it to assist Rob Butler and Buckinghamshire Council in their negotiations with HS2.

We understand that demolition of the cottages is now scheduled for the end of November following disconnection of the utilities. It’s heartbreaking to see this starting and the scale of the cutting works is about to become much clearer to everyone.

We will not give up on our aim to convince those in power that the current scheme is ill-thought-through and damaging. We have already written back to Andrew Stephenson, putting our position forward and our mitigation for noise and water back on the Active Resistance Camp table. You can see these letters at our website At the time of going to press, the protestors were still holding the fort, but the disruption www.whs2.org. to travelers on the A413 is just awful, with Traffic Appeal overturned huge delays. “Traffic Management” has been The Planning Inspector has concluded that introduced on the A413 at Small Dean during the the proposed lorry route from Amersham to eviction of protestors from their camps, leading the “Green Tunnel North Portal Compound” to a significant queue and delays northbound. beside the Wendover bypass should go ahead. He notes that the peak traffic movements Highways informed us that this is a result of there could “rise to 536 Large Goods Vehicle their policy to limit the size of the southbound queue so that Wendover doesn’t get gridlocked. movements per day”. Predictably the back road to Great Missenden At a meeting of Bucks Highways department past Chequers and Butlers Cross got very busy and Councillors from other parishes, (also too, and we can expect more of this when HS2 struggling with the effects of HS2 further start to build the Small Dean viaduct. down the line), they learnt that the inspectors are bending the rules to the benefit of HS2. It appears ironic to us that, as the tunnelling Allegedly, Highways is being told by DfT that machines reach ever closer to Wendover, with its powers under the Act are not as wide as protestors inside the tunnel fighting for us, they might deem, and it would appear DfT we can’t just get the tunnelling machines to have ignored what was agreed / promised continue past Wendover so all this disruption, in Parliament and in doing so ignored the environmental and community damage will be resolved. cumulative impacts. The impact is expected to be congestion on the A413 and surrounding road network, including all the ‘rat-runs’, but it is impossible for Highways to predict it accurately or take preventative action with the very limited information provided by HS2. Test Piling

The testing of the piling methods needed for the Small Dean Viaduct, which involved holes 40 metres deep, has been completed. This depth will intercept the aquifer, and we eventually received answers to our Freedom of Information requests about the use of “bentonite” drilling mud and the risk of pollution downstream of the Canal and Weston Turville Nature Reserve. We continue to challenge the Environment Agency to ensure HS2 have carried out the appropriate risk assessments, as done for Colne Valley viaduct.

Chris Packham’s Petition

Sadly, the outcome of this highly subscribed petition to reconsider HS2 altogether has not led to anything further than a good debate and a clear picture of just how much opposition there is in parliament to this scheme. Added to this, the recent attack against Chris himself only highlights the problems we have at the Community mitigation funds Despite many HS2 mitigation funds being moment, with what feels like two different available, only 157 projects have had money camps of people - those against climate assigned in Bucks. HS2 works are continuing to advance inexorably closer to Wendover itself. The pace of work is increasing, especially now the majority of the WAR group have been evicted from the site. Weekend works on the sheet piling adjacent to the railway line are underway with closures for four Friday night to Monday morning sessions to complete the work without impacting on the A413. www.wendover-pc.gov.uk/post/sheet-piling A reply to Rob Butler’s letter to Andrew Stephenson about the option of mined tunnel for us and other ideas, has not encouraged us (the post visit letter from the HS2 Minister to Rob Butler MP is available on www.wendover-pc.gov.uk/post/post-visitletter-from-hs2-minister-to-rob-butler-mp) but we are determined to continue the fight as a mined tunnel would solve many potential issues of noise and water. A Freedom of Information request about whether EKFB had ever been given a green light to report fully on our proposal, and if so, why can’t it

be shared with us, has caused Lord Berkeley to send a further letter to the HS2 Minister suggesting it was never in fact completed! The working group are also progressing crossparty support for a completely independent review of the mined tunnel proposal, with a letter signed by various MPs. (See www. wendover-pc.gov.uk) Meanwhile the HS2 access road through the Ellesborough Road field should be completed by the time you read this, ready for the demolition of some of the cottages to make way for the Cut and Cover section of the route! The temporary relief road for Ellesborough Road comes later. The Wendover Parish Council and its Working Group are fully committed to pushing for the Mined Tunnel as the best mitigation for our green and pleasant land! eco-Santa Sleigh

Rotary is now gearing up for our eco-Santa Sleigh to visit as many roads as possible in the Wendover and Weston Turville area. Our coverage is limited by the number of days available in December (we'll start on Thursday 2 December) and the number of volunteers who can help. Would you like to bring cheer to children of all ages by joining Santa and his team on one or more nights? Two hours max per evening, 5.30pm to 7.15pm. Fundraising for Chilterns MS

We have an eco-Santa sleigh, as well as a card reader and Covid secure way of receiving cash

Last year, the sudden pre-Christmas lock down meant we had to curtail our outings along with the rest of the country. Our plan of which roads we will be covering on which evenings will be published in the December print edition of Wendover News and on the Rotary in Wendover and District Facebook.

Kings Farm Shop Serving Wendover for 40 years From its inception in September 1981, Kings Farm Shop (KFS) has kept its customers at the centre of everything that it does. The team is now looking to mark their special 40th anniversary by giving back to the customers who have supported them over the years. This autumn will see the first of a year-long series of events to mark 40 years of service to the local community. The events will include complimentary hog roasts as well as some exciting surprises in 2022. The first of these events kicks off on Saturday 6 November when there will be a special Bonfire Banger BBQ at the shop. Owner Garry King said “We have the best customers, who have been loyal to us for many many years. We see our 40th anniversary as another opportunity to give back to them for their continued support, especially in what has been a challenging 18 months for everyone.’’

As you might have noticed KFS has changed considerably over the years. There have been multiple extensions to both the main shop building and the range of products available!

For all its success over the years, the philosophy of the business has not changed, always going above and beyond to deliver high quality produce from local suppliers – with a smile! It is this philosophy that has also embedded KFS within the local community, supporting local charities, schools and sports clubs. Including Youth Concern, Rennie Grove and Aylesbury Rugby Club to name just a few. If you are unable to visit KFS in Nash Lee End, a small range of meats & deli is available in Budgens and you can order online at https://kingsfarmshop.co.uk/.

Dry ageing cabinet and block

The most recent addition is the new 12ft dry ager, stocking only the best grass fed beef, labelled specially by breed, that really grabs the attention as you enter the shop. The country kitchen, opened by Mary Berry in 2017, continues to tempt, with a wide range of cakes, pies and cooked meats.

J Brown Funeral Services Independent Family Funeral Director Jbrownfuneralservices.co.uk Funeral Director Jason Brown has over 25 years experience and is here to assist you with making funeral arrangements, be they traditional, green or totally bespoke.

The team at KFS look forward to welcoming you to their 40th anniversary events in the coming year and want to thank you again for your continued support – roll on 50 we say!! To read about the early days go to https:// wendovernews.co.uk/news/local-facegarry-king/from June 1993.

Hospice Charity appeals for Volunteers Florence Nightingale Hospice Charity is urgently calling for people to sign up as volunteers to help them fund and provide the best hospice care for local residents. “Volunteers are vital to the success of our Charity and we really couldn’t do what we do without them,” says Penny Bradshaw, Head of Volunteering. “We are still feeling the effects of the pandemic. Our volunteers were not needed for many months whilst our shops were closed, our events cancelled and access to the Hospice itself restricted. And, whilst those restrictions have now lifted, we have found that many of our previous volunteers are stepping back from their roles – in fact we have around half the number of active volunteers now than in early 2019.” The Charity is particularly looking for volunteers to help in their nine shops between Buckingham and Thame. “Our

The Wendover Society relaunch at Harvest Supper It was a beautiful evening, as 100+ current & potential members came together at Wendover’s Memorial Hall to celebrate the rebirth of the Society on 1 October. Ron Petersen was unanimously appointed as the new Chair along with the new committee members.

Whilst he made clear that a tunnel was not forthcoming, we took some comfort in his promises to support alternative mitigation ideas to the best of his ability. During the supper, The Society asked its members to provide their thoughts on Wendover and the role of the new Society in the future. We are now actively seeking input, ideas and suggestions from all members who were not in attendance at the supper, in order for the new committee to formulate its focus and way forward.

Good conversation, catching up with old faces and meeting some new ones over a delicious meal provided by PoshNosh, gave way to a rousing talk by Ron re-affirming The Society’s original mission ‘to protect the charm & scale of Wendover’. Need a Reset? – How about a new career in caring? Ashridge Home Care Launches recruitment campaign

After months of uncertainty and changes for the nation, the arrival of autumn signals a time for change and new avenues to be explored. Ashridge Home Care is using this season to recruit new carers. The award winning home care company is looking for individuals who need a change in career or are considering new opportunities from their usual career paths. All training will be provided and 24-hour support is available via a solid mentoring programme. The Amersham based company is looking for caring individuals to fulfil roles as visiting part time carers as well as full time live-in carers. The national care sector has grown significantly during the pandemic and the workforce has increased steadily. Demand for home care services has continued to rise and qualified carers are in high demand. As a result home care companies like Ashridge are investing heavily in training and retention of their staff

and rewarding employees for their skill sets.

hard during the past year and we have had nothing but praise from clients about how happy and safe their loved ones are by being able to stay at home with a trained carer. Since last year there has been a significant growth in home care as a safer alternative to care homes, this means our client numbers and enquiries are increasing and we simply cannot meet the current demand. Our focus has to be to look after our existing team to prevent burn out. Retaining the talent that we have and nurturing our staff is more important than ever as demand for our services increases. The expanded head office team are on hand 24 hours a day to offer support to our carers and continually ensure their training is up-to-date and they have all the tools to care for their clients and themselves.”

In response to the increase in home care demand, Trudi Scrivener, founder and MD of Ashridge Home Care, has expanded the head office team with the appointment of a full time recruitment manager and business support manager to run its recruitment campaign. She has also promoted within the team to support new and existing carers. Team members include a Complex Care Lead, Dementia Champion and Carer Mentor, all of whom will support existing and new carers with 24-hour help to answer questions specific to their clients. The company won a prestigious Best Employer Award in the Buckinghamshire County Council-run Pride of Bucks Awards. Tribute: Edward Oates His biggest legacy is two children, five grandchildren, and seven greatgrandchildren recently now eight, Willow having been born to Mary and Jay just days ago. Our kids, and later theirs, loved to visit him mainly in search of biscuits of course. With his kitchen door always open, they were gone in a trice. In 1947 he married Nora and moved to Park Street in Aylesbury, eventually moving back to Sydney Terrace in Wendover now with Michael and Jane in 1956. He worked for the Inland Revenue moving from office to office eventually ending up as The Collector of Taxes for Hitchin, commuting daily. On one occasion a rear spring broke on his Austin Cambridge. A replacement was found courtesy of Curly at Halton Scrapyard and off I set to Hitchin to replace it. A nice chap brought me out a cup of tea. I naturally explained that it was a cash job. I think Edward bit the end of his pipe off. He retired in 1980 but that wasn’t my fault. I met Edward in 1975 in his shed, even then a bit tumble down, at the end of his garden. His pipe was quietly smouldering away on the workbench. If I recall he was busy making a gearwheel for a clock. “You’ll be Chris then?” he enquired re-vitalising his pipe, filling the shed with smoke. “What do you know about lathes then?” As it happened I did and we were soon deep in conversation about all things engineering. For a Yorkshireman he was clearly a fine fellow. Jane eventually came to find me once it got dark.

was interviewed countless times following a lovely meeting with Christopher Nolan researching for the film Dunkirk, in which a number of his recollections are featured.

sunny, happy April (2020) day. Rumour has it we fired him over the village from a cannon but he enjoyed the experience and landed firmly but safely in Trevor’s hedge.

He was invited to a private screening at Warner Brothers accompanied by Pete, Alice and Mary. They asked if he and the other veterans present approved. Edward said he’d now been there twice. An accolade if there ever was one. Then it was the red carpet premiere: another invitation, another limo. Pete, Owain and Alex took him and what a day they had. Alex, who is in the TA, so being military, was charged with accompanying Edward to Kensington Palace to meet Prince Harry whilst Pete and Owain enjoyed the Green Room. A call was made with Pete at one o’clock in the morning telling us that they were ready to go but Grandad was busy talking to Kenneth Branagh. I didn't know who that was, so I just said OK. They got back at three.

With huge gratitude we thank all the carers he has had especially Roger and the two Sues who, through their dedication, ensured that he enjoyed his later years to the fullest, at home, and celebrated his 101st birthday. Most of all I thank Jane for being there 24/7. Chris Dunkley, son-in-law Grandad was a unique character: a modest man, of great integrity and intellectual pursuits with many skills and talents. He had a can-do attitude to life; was creative; had an active mind and would keep up with the modern world and technologies. He was computer literate and always keen to embrace the new. His passion for astronomy meant he was active for many years in the Aylesbury Astronomical Society. I accompanied him to the wondrous Winchenden Observatory and have some very special recollections of star gazing with him and once even met Sir Patrick Moore in his company. A generous man, I was always astonished at the range of bizarre riches he would acquire for me, from stationary engines and old clocks to a taxidermied crocodile head, which I treasure. He gave me some of his old hand tools which I still use to this day. He could also extemporise on literature, poetry, languages, was a decent artist with a musical ear and he could regale a room with songs from his youth and even the army. Owain Jones, grandson Full versions of these tributes are available at https://wendovernews.co.uk/news/edwardoates-tributes/.

He also went on countless trips with The Association of Dunkirk Little Ships and was quickly adopted by Alan and Ann, owners of the RIIS. Their kindness meant an awful lot to us and him, in his Yorkshire way obviously. Recently we turned up some pulleys for the RIIS on his old lathe. A fitting tribute.

A memorable trip for him was a picnic on the Thames at Windsor Castle with Mark, his nephew, regular army. Prince Philip came over to chat to them. Edward said, "Sorry but I’m a little hard of hearing," whereupon Prince He never spoke about Dunkirk until Philip replied with a smile, "Join the club!" Local Face: Ruth Blake Ruth Blake has become the backbone of the staff at Jackin-the-Box Preschool because she's been helping small children develop confidence to be ready for "Big School" since it opened in 1994. That's why she was chosen for a special photograph, right, at their 25th anniversary celebrations in 2019. Ruth's parents lived in Wendover for a while but moved to Hardwick, just north of Aylesbury, in 1954 so she wasn't born here. Her real ambition at secondary school was to work in child care but when her parents looked into it, the pay was so bad that as one of eight children, they needed a better wage coming in and she was pushed into office work. Ruth is nothing if not adaptable so although she started off as an office junior, she ended up as a wages supervisor in Aylesbury before motherhood.

Adam and Martin, born in Aston Clinton, had Ruth as a parent helper at their Playschool, loving every minute of it. By 1987 the family had moved to Wendover and soon Caroline came along to make it complete. Ruth started volunteering at John Hampden School with needlework. All three of Ruth's children came through all the Wendover schools and continue to live and work locally enabling her to keep in close touch with her 6 grandchildren, 3 through Jack-in-theBox Preschool. You can meet Adam at Kings Farm Shop, Martin runs his own Painting and Decorating business and Caroline is a mobile Hairdresser. The family is very much in contact with one another.

small - currently 19 children - which means it maintains a village feel, being personal rather than corporate. All staff know all children and the older children show great kindness to the younger.

Jack-in-the-Box was so glad to re-open after the enforced closure during early lockdown and their charges were thrilled to be back, too. Even more cleaning is required and twice-weekly lateral flow tests, but fun has returned! They are concerned that "Covid babies", who will enter soon, have not had the same socialisation as in previous years so that will be a prime focus. They have also discovered that passing children over at the gate rather than the door makes it easier for both parties. Children wash their hands and settle straight into the tasks at hand. There is early drop off at 8.30am and late pick up at 3.30pm with children staying 9-12 or 9-3. Their home is The Scout Hut in Clay Ruth came to work from Day 1 and was Lane, HP22 6NS, tel 01296 696404, email attracted to this Pre-school because it is jackintheboxpreschool@hotmail.co.uk.
