ong unreachable by land due to unpredictable dirt roads, particularly during summer’s rainy months, the towns of Villa del Mar, Tehuamixtle and Mayto in the municipality of Cabo Corrientes, south of Puerto Vallarta, have been popular among beach and sun worshippers and camping enthusiasts due to their rustic appeal. But things are changing rapidly. Thanks to a number of new roads presently under construction, the town of El Tuito is quickly becoming an important hub for these and other destinations within the municipality, increasingly connecting visitors with this formerly inaccessible region.

or mucho tiempo, los pueblos de Villa del Mar, Tehuamixtle y Mayto en el municipio de Cabo Corrientes al sur de Puerto Vallarta, han sido favorecidos por los amantes de la playa, del sol y del campamento, debido a su entorno rústico, pero ha sido difícil llegar a ellos debido a los malos caminos, en especial durante los meses lluviosos del verano. Pero esto está cambiando. Nuevos caminos se encuentran en construcción, y gracias a ellos, El Tuito se está convirtiendo en un punto de conección para estos y otros destinos dentro del municipio, y acercándo a los visitantes cada ves más a esta remota región.
In the previous issue of Vallarta Lifestyles, we introduced you to Puerto Vallarta’s South Shore (pg. 58 or online at http://www.virtualvallarta. com/puertovallarta/tours-activities/getaways/south-shore-loop-vallarta. shtml) and the easily accessible town of El Tuito via Carr. 200 Sur, now billed as Puerto Vallarta’s “Palms to Pines Highway.” And although an SUV is ideal, just about any vehicle in good condition can get you to these towns from El Tuito in just about an hour (see sidebar).
En la edición anterior de Vallarta Lifestyles, te presentamos la Costa Sur de Puerto Vallarta (pag. 58, o en línea en inglés www.virtualvallarta.com/ puertovallarta/tours-activities/getaways/south-shore-loop-vallarta.shtml) y El Tuito, un lindo pueblito sobre la Carr. 200 Sur, ahora también conocida como la “Carretera de Palmeras a Pinos.” Y a pesar de que es preferible manejar a estos destinos en una camioneta SUV, cualquier vehículo en buenas condiciones te permitirá llegar a ellos en aproximadamente una hora (leer abajo).
All three towns are less than 10 minutes by car from one another and so small they can barely be referred to as such. And yet, when it comes to enjoying an interesting getaway, their proximity to one another and their unique features are absolutely complementary. Nature lovers will particularly enjoy Mayto, which is also the first town you encounter as you drive west from El Tuito. The town itself is not on the ocean per se, but just before it. As you reach the ocean, you encounter a long, undeveloped stretch of beach you can walk northbound seemingly endlessly. The state university maintains a marine turtle research and preservation camp that welcomes Puerto Vallarta high school students, who spend weekends on location involved in the rewarding mission of safely returning marine turtles to the sea once they hatch, an annual ritual that can be enjoyed throughout the region. The camp also welcomes tourists and visitors, who can learn first hand about these and other fascinating creatures. South of the camp, within walking distance, two hotels, Mayto and El Rinconcito, offer comfortable accommodations right on the ocean. Farther south, Playa del Amor, or Love Beach, is a small and secluded beach (hence the name) where spotting visitors enjoying the sun and sand au naturel is not at all unusual.
Los tres poblados se encuentran a menos de diez minutos de distancia entre sí, y son tan pequeños que prácticamente ni se les puede llamar como tales. Sin embargo, si se trata de tener un viaje interesante, su cercanía, así como sus características hacen que se complementen por completo. A los amantes de la naturaleza les gustará Mayto en particular. Es el primer poblado al que llegarás cuando manejas al oeste de El Tuito. El pueblo en sí no se encuentra junto al mar, sino un poco antes. Al llegar al mar, encontrarás una playa hacia el norte tan larga que parece que la puedes caminar infinitamente. La universidad estatal tiene un campamento de investigación y preservación de la tortuga marina donde alumnos de preparatoria en Puerto Vallarta pasan los fines de semana participando en la importante misión de regresar a estos animales al mar una vez que salen del cascarón, un ritual anual que puede ser apreciado en toda la región. El campamento también ofrece a los visitantes la oportunidad de participar en dichas actividades, así como de conocer otros interesantes animales locales. Al sur del campamento se puede caminar a dos hoteles, Mayto y El Rinconcito, los cuales ofrecen cómodas habitaciones junto al mar. Más al sur, la Playa del Amor es una pequeña playa privada donde es común encontrar visitantes tomando el sol al natural.
