Season Preview

After a 12-2-4 season in 2018, the UWStevens Point women’s soccer team was left unfulfilled without a coveted NCAA Tournament bid. With three returning all-conference and four all-region selections back, the Pointers are excited to take the next step in 2019. Senior Maddy Hardyman brings backto-back all-conference nods into her final season with the Pointers. Junior Kaitlyn Hess is also a two-time All-WIAC selection. Meghan Ambelang and Lexi Pawlowski return after all-region nods. “This group, led by the seniors, wants to get to the NCAA Tournament,” stated head coach Dawn Crow. “They want to leave a legacy with this class. Last season, didn’t really have closure, so it was motivational in the spring.” Pawlowski led the WIAC in goals against average (0.60) and save percentage (.882) in her first season as the primary goalkeeper in 2018. She had eight clean sheets and twice earned WIAC Defensive Player of the Week laurels. Freshmen Miranda Nieman and Brookelyn Heiss join the fray in 2019 and will each push the level of play in net. Nieman had consecutive all-conference nods in her final two years in Wisconsin Rapids. “It’s been a good competition thus far in the preseason,” said Crow. “Each keeper has their own unique skills set and it’s exciting to see the level of play rise.” Hess has earned all-league honors in her last two seasons and looks to anchor one side of the back line again this season. In addition to all-conference honors, she picked up a WIAC Defensive Player of the Week nod and scored four goals last year. Ambelang returns for her junior season as an award winner and will anchor the other side of the back line. Along with Hess, she helped the UWSP defense to a league-best

0.57 goals against average a season ago. She also jumped up on the play, adding a trio of assists on the campaign. Alexis Petersen is back to help solidify the center back area. She was an all-conference pick in 2017 and played in just 12 matches last year. Sophia Reddan looks to increase her playing time in her sophomore campaign. Her feistiness can be disruptive to opposing attackers. Freshman Olivia Piloni is another option to see time on defense. The Pointers’ midfield has a plethora of options as Crow has the ability to move players up or back depending on the match. Gracie Wendels is healthy after playing in just eight matches in 2018. Despite her limited playing time, she tallied three goals and one assist. Hope Garbison and Bridget Kauzlaric both got valuable experience in their first season at UWSP in 2018. Kauzlaric played in 17 of the 18 matches and scored two goals with three assists. Garbison played in all 18 matches with three starting nods. Senior Kassidy Spees is one of the “twoway” options for Crow. A speedy outside option, Spees can play in the midfield or up top. She had a goal and an assist in 2018. Other options for playing time in the midfield include freshmen Mikayla Brown, Trinity Christy, Lauren Johnson, Hannah Luginbill and Piloni. Aside from youth, this group is energetic and has the ability to put several in the starting lineup. Nora Hargett will be sidelined for the season, but has the experience to contribute valuable knowledge on the young group. Hardyman has been the most consistent striker for the Pointers the last couple seasons. She led the team with nine goals and eight assists in 2018. A two-time allleague selection and an all-region recipient, Hardyman took 67 shots a season ago, the

second-most in the conference. Jacquline Aleman and Esme Reinders return for their sophomore campaigns and will compete for time I the mix up top. Each scored three times in their first season with Aleman adding three helpers. Other experienced forwards include Charity Shaw and Spees. Freshmen Kati Frierdich, Shea-Lynn Gerred, Brown and Johnson can also be solid contributors up top. “We have built the depth we needed to be able to compete if someone goes down,” continued Crow. “It is fun to watch the creativity of this year’s group.” UWSP will be tested right out of the gate with a matchup against St. Thomas on the road in the season opener. The Tommies will be the first of three opponents that made last season’s NCAA Tournament. “We get to see what we have,” said Crow. “There is not a better test to begin the season than to play at St. Thomas. Being away from home will also be a good test for our freshmen and it will be a good team bonding trip.” After going unbeaten in the conference a season ago, UWSP is again picked to finish runner-up in the WIAC in 2019. With six shutouts against league foes in 2018, the Pointers know the capability of the defense. The main question in 2019 will be how much the offense can carry to load.

Dawn Crow Head Coach Fifth Season Dawn Crow, a four-time national champion at Division I powerhouse North Carolina and former U.S. National Team player, enters her fifth season as the women’s soccer coach at UWStevens Point. In 2018, she guided the Pointers to the best finish in her tenure, a 12-2-4 campaign that included a 5-0-2 WIAC record. Her team reached the WIAC Tournament semifinal game and fell in penalties following a 0-0 draw. UWSP allowed just 11 goals in the 18 matches, second fewest in program history. Crow also assumes administrative responsibilities for UWSP athletics, providing assistance with oversight of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee, the athletics mascot and academic services for Pointers student-athletes. Crow brings a wealth of playing and coaching experience at the Division I level to the Pointers’ program, one that has 14 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) championships and 15 NCAA Tournament appearances to its credit in the last 23 seasons. Crow came to UW-Stevens Point after being the head girls’ soccer coach at Plano East Senior High School, one of the largest high schools in the country, in Plano, Texas from 2007-13. There, she was a two-time District 9-5A Coach of the Year and was the runner-up for the District 8-5A Coach of the Year in 2012. Crow’s 2008 team was the program’s first-ever state finalist and 30 student-athletes she coached at Plano East went on to play at NCAA Division I programs. Her teams also earned the NSCAA Team GPA Award six times.

Prior to her time at Plano East, Crow spent seven seasons at the Division I level as either the head coach or an assistant. After starting as a volunteer assistant at Virginia Commonwealth (1996) and UNC-Wilmington (1997), she spent three seasons in the Southeastern Conference (SEC) as an assistant at Mississippi State (1998) and Alabama (1999-2000). From 2001-02, Crow was the head coach at Duquesne and she went on to serve as an assistant at Fairfield (2002-2003). In addition to her collegiate coaching experience, Crow was a youth coach for FC Dallas of Major League Soccer (MLS) from 2005-14. In that role, she was the runner-up for the 2009 FC Dallas Club Coach of the Year and was recently a nominee for the Double Goal Coach Award from the Positive Coaching Alliance in 2014. She helped the FC Dallas Red 93 team move up three groups in the classic league and spent the last four seasons coaching the FC Dallas White 98 and FC Dallas 98 Premier squads. Crow also was a coach in the Region 2 Olympic Delopment Program system, as well as the Wisconsin ODP staff coach in 2001 and 2002. A 1995 graduate of the University of North Carolina where she had a career record of 97-1-1, Crow played professionally for the Charlotte Speed (now the Charlotte Lady Eagles) of the USISL-W for the 1997 and 1998 seasons and was named the league’s Defensive Player of the Year in 1997. Most recently, Crow was a midfielder for the Memphis Mercury of the United Soccer League and was a member of the 2001 team
