Season Preview

Season Preview The UW-Stevens Point softball team is coming off a 17-win season in 2019, the most since 2013, but the sights are set much higher in 2020. UWSP head coach Ryan Konitzer enters his third season and has brought in multiple young faces. He is excited to see what they can bring to the field. The young team features one lone senior, two juniors, four sophomores and 11 freshmen. The Pointers are excited for this new team dynamic and are thrilled to take the field this season. UWSP returns WIAC Position Player of the Year in junior Lauren Luedtke. Among the other returners are two 2019 all-conference selections, sophomores Sammy Buerger and Maddie Candre. In the Circle This year, the Pointers feature four pitchers and are looking to freshmen to fill big shoes. Konitzer is expecting his lone senior on this year’s team, Ashley Cohen, to step up and lead this squad. Cohen knows with the freshmen coming in she will have a very talented infield behind her allowing her to have the confidence she needs to pitch to contact. Last season, Cohen pitched in 50 innings racking up 38 strike outs. She can also swing the bat and had 38 hits with 20 RBIs. The Pointers have brought in three freshmen pitchers this season. Makenna Tkach was all-state as a senior in high school. Konitzer said, “I love her temperament on the mound. I am very excited to see what she will bring to the team and how she will lead.” Also coming in as freshmen are Lauren Lindahl and Barbara Covek. Konitzer believes they are both great

assets to the team and he is excited to see what they can do on the mound. Behind the Plate Coming back for her sophomore season behind the plate is Buerger. In the words of Konitzer, “Words do not describe how important she is to the team this year. She does a great job holding everyone accountable while still being their biggest cheerleader.” He also said, last year she came in right away being such a big leader and expects nothing less from her this year. Last season, Buerger started all 38 games. She hit .357 with 40 hits, 12 RBI and two home runs on the season. Filling in when Buerger needs a break will be Madi Greenaberg. She will also

be making the transition from third base to first base this season. Last season, Greenaberg batted .283 with 30 hits and 19 runs batted in. On the Dirt The versatility of Luedtke will be on display again in 2020 as she will be making a slight transition from shortstop over to third base. Last season, Luedtke started in all 38 games. She piled up 58 hits and 35 RBI and a league-best .429 batting average. Konitzer is happy to have her back and is excited to see what more she will be bringing to the quad this season. This season, Konitzer is making a few changes because he has such a versatile group of young women and feels most are capable of playing many different positions. Luedtke will shift from shortstop to third base and Greenaberg is moving from third base to first base. Behind her at first base will be

returner Erin Schmitt and freshman Clarissa Messina. Konitzer is looking for both to be strong pinch hitters for the team this season. Also coming in as freshmen on the infield are Maddix Bonnell, Becca Geiyer, Mackenzie Niespodzany and Sara Traxel. Bonnell will be playing a lot of the shortstop position this season. According to Konitzer, she is a true team player and is an exceptional fielder. Geiyer will be mostly playing second base. Although she played a lot of shortstop on her travel team in high school, Konitzer believes it will be a great fit for her. Traxel received an all-state award her senior year and is a very diverse player that Konitzer believes she will be able to fill multiple roles. Roaming the outfield Candre started all 38 games and will patrol centerfield again in 2020. She finished last season with 50 hits and batted in 35 runs while racking up a 22-game hitting streak. Also returning for the Pointers is Rachael Wakefield. Last season, Wakefield had a .308 batting average with 28 hits and 11 runs batted in. The remainder of the outfield options will be freshmen. Megan Lawrence, Gina Magro and Grace Nys all have the opportunity to contribute.

Offensive Strike Konitzer believes that year three is when you truly settle into your program. Offensively, he will be relying on his team’s speed and smarts to make his offense work. Last season, the Pointers led the WIAC in batting average and they also had 59 stolen bases. They are looking to improve these numbers and want to keep climbing as a team. No matter what they will always keep coming and continue to raise the standards. Konitzer said, “We are going to be young, but we are not going to use it as an excuse.”

Schedule Konitzer plans to use the Pointers’ schedule to his advantage. The Pointers have the Finlandia Dome Classic and two Minnesota dome doubleheaders. They will then head down to Florida where the Spring Games are held. Konitzer is looking to use these moments to get every player experience. He wants to test out different lineups to see what works and what doesn’t, but most importantly he wants his players to grow and enjoy every moment; while starting to gel as a team before conference play. It is the Pointers’ goal to make the conference tournament this season and Konitzer’s goal is to make sure that no more seniors ever go through the Pointers program without experiencing a WIAC Tournament. Coaching Staff Joining the coaching staff this season is Konitzer’s former player Amanda Jaskolski. Konitzer coached her when she was a senior at Lawrence University. She was an All-American in 2015, her senior season, and hit .462. When Konitzer was coaching her, he told her one-day she was going to be his assistant coach. Five years later it has become reality.

Ryan Konitzer Head Coach Third season Ryan Konitzer was introduced as the 13th head softball coach in UW-Stevens Point program history on Aug. 3, 2017. He came to UWSP from Alverno College in Milwaukee. In his first season with the Pointers, Konitzer’s team racked up 43 stolen bases, the third-most in school history. He upped that total in 2019 with 59 swipes, the second-most in program history. His team won 17 games in 2019, the most since 2013. Under his tutelage, Lauren Luedtke was named the WIAC Position Player of the Year in 2019. She was one of three allconference players for Konitzer in 2019. He has coached five all-conference players in his two seasons at UWSP. At Alverno, Konitzer led the Inferno to a school record in sacrifice hits and stolen bases in 2017. He won 13 games,

including six in Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference play in his lone season at Alverno. Konitzer was an assistant coach at Lawrence prior to taking the helm at Alverno. Upon his arrival, he helped the Vikings capture their first Midwest Conference North Division Championship in 10 years, while accumulating the second-highest win total in program history (28). In two seasons at Lawrence, he helped the Vikings record the secondhighest fielding percentage .965) in program history in 2015. He also instructed the slap-hitters, which improved their batting average by over .120 in his two seasons with Lawrence. Prior to heading to Lawrence, Konitzer was the head varsity coach at Lourdes Academy High School in Oshkosh for the 2014 season where he guided the team to a 14-5 record -- a ninewin improvement over the prior

season -- and was awarded the Trailways Conference Coach of the Year honor. The Knights led the conference in stolen bases and sacrifice hits and made it to the WIAA regional championship game. He was an assistant coach at Ripon College from 200813, his alma mater, where the Red Hawks rewrote the record books and won a pair of league championships. In that span, he helped lead the program to its first two appearances in the NCAA Division III Softball Championship Tournament. The Ripon staff was named the 2011 National Fastpitch Coaches Association Great Lakes Region Coaching Staff of the Year. Ryan, his wife, Kendra, and their daughter, Henlee, reside in Marshfield.

She followed Konitzer to UW-Stevens Point from Alverno College in Milwaukee, Wis., where she spent 2017 as the Inferno’s pitching coach. During her lone year at Alverno, she helped lower their ace’s ERA, walks, and opponent batting average. Barthels spent her collegiate career at Lawrence University in Appleton. She played four years for the Vikings, saving her best season for last, recording a 1.97 ERA and was awarded All-Midwest Conference second team honors. Barthels’ primary responsibility will be as the pitching coach for the Pointers. “I have had the opportunity to work with Liz as a player, and as an assistant,” said Konitzer. “The one thing that has remained constant is her work ethic and her thirst for knowledge. She is a true student of the game, I fully expect her and our pitching staff to help us reach our goals this season.”

Amanda Jaskolski Assistant Coach first Season Jaskolski comes to UWSP from the GRB Academy in Windsor, Wis., where she specialized in one-on-one instruction and coached summer travel ball teams. She also spent a season at her alma mater, Lawrence, as a volunteer coach.
