Season Preview

The UW-Stevens Point women’s hockey team’s senior leadership will be the key to success for the team in the 2019-2020 season. The Pointers finished the 2018-2019 season with a 8-15-4 overall record with a conference record of 1-6-2. UWSP is looking to replace five graduated seniors, including All-WIAC winners Lauren Smith, Cara Lemirande and Sydney Conley.

competing against each other and they’ve also been doing a fabulous job of helping each other,” said Ninnemann. “They want to play, but they also want the best for their other partners.” Joining Smith as newcomers are Cassie Knutson on defense, Kiley Hahner on the skill line, Gina Magro, Ashtyn Wiltscheck and Maike Zipp to help set up the defense.

This season, UWSP returns All-WIAC senior Alex Grubbs on offense and senior defender Maddie Monroe. “They are both very hard workers,” said head coach Ann Ninnemann. “I think that is kind of going to be the key to our success this entire season is just continuing to work hard.” The position of goalie will be a test for this year. Marit Larson is back after sitting out last season due to an injury. Also, back is Olivia Schultz, who served as the number two goalie behind Conley last year. Joining the team is freshman goaltender, Kaelie Smith, who is starting her transition from the high school to college level. “All three of them have been working hard and

Last year, the Pointers finished third in the conference. This year, the Pointers are hoping to return to a special team’s powerhouse like they were in years past. “We didn’t used to have as much talent as we do now, and how did we get there? We just wanted it and that has to be our mindset.” Following the graduation of two of the top five goal scorers, the Pointers look to Grubbs to lead the offense this year after leading the team in points last season. Joining Grubbs is junior Dani Heitsman, who tied Grubbs with seven goals last season, and junior Sophie Regovic, who scored five goals with the team a season ago. The team will rely on them to help increase their goals this season.

Back to help the Pointers on offense are juniors Shannon Motzko, Cassie Newcomer, Alana Achterkirch, Brie Larkowski and McKenna Butcher, along with sophomores Mary Kremer and Nicole Neuberger. “I think that’s kind of our biggest area for improvement is scoring goals. It’s working on solid line compositions and getting the people who play well together,” said Ninnemann. Returning to help lead the defense are junior Emma Berthiaume, and sophomores Anna Cheney and Haley Sellers. During the offseason, the team has been working on being more physical and defending the puck. “Being physical is a necessity, initiating contact versus letting someone else initiate contact against us,” said Ninnemann. “Protecting the puck is all about using your body, and it’s going to be the way we have to play. It’s part of hockey.”

ann ninnemann Head Coach 14th Season Ninnemann is in her 14th season as head coach of the UW-Stevens Point women’s hockey team in 2019-20. In her tenure, the Pointers have experienced several successful seasons including a national third-place finish in 200607. National success is nothing new for Ninnemann, who experienced plenty as both a player and assistant coach. In fact, she is one of the only people ever to both play and coach in a Division III Frozen Four. She also was an assistant coach in the Frozen Four and became just the third female head coach ever to lead a team to the national semifinals. Under Ninnemann’s direction the Pointers have posted a 197-12339 overall record (.603) and her .603 winning percentage ranks 10th among active NCAA Division III coaches and 29th among all-

time coaches at all divisions. Her teams posted a 70-42-17 mark in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA). The Pointers earned a berth into the NCAA Tournament in 2013-14. Ninnemann was UW-Stevens Point’s first All-American player in 2001-02 and captained the Pointers for three straight seasons from 2002-05. She totaled 55 goals and a school-record 69 assists for 124 points, ranking second in school history for goals and points. Ninnemann was named to the all-tournament team in 2004 when she led the Pointers to a national runner-up finish. She also assisted former UW-Stevens Point head coach and current North Dakota head coach Brian Idalski for one season with the Pointers in 2005-06, resulting in a third place national finish.
