Season Preview

Spring always brings excitement and optimism and that mantra is especially true for the 2020 UWStevens Point baseball team. Fifthyear head coach Jeremy Jirschele feels he has the pieces and new arms to make the upward swing after a down season in 2019. Leading the charge among returners are All-WIAC selections Aaron Simmons and Payton Nelson. The duo will solidify the outfield this season and were the leading hitters for the Pointers a season ago. Seniors Tommy Duddleston and Nolan Matson were also among the top hitters for UWSP in 2019. The Pointers bring in a plethora of fresh arms looking to resurrect the pitching staff into a contender in the WIAC. In fact, the entire battery could be fresh faces on any given day for the Pointers in 2020. ON THE BUMP Leading the pitching staff among returners for the Pointers in 2020 is senior Matt Morgan. He struck out 22 in 28.2 innings in three starts and 10 appearances last year.

Morgan is one of just three returning arms that picked up a win in 2019. Junior Zack Haupt picked up two wins and earned a save in 10 appearances in 2019. He had 25 strikeouts and held opponents to a .250 average. Sophomore Caleb Krommenakker returns after going 1-0 in nine outings in 2019. He struck out 16 in 21.0 innings. New arms that look to impact the rotation include Nick Carpenter, Casey Pickering and Stevens Point native JD Schultz. Pitchers returning with experience include Zach Miller, Christopher Schiera, Cam Schuett and Austin Syvertson. BEHIND THE DISH UWSP looks to replace graduated stud catcher Kyle Mrozinski with a platoon setup in 2020. Senior Nolan Matson, who hit .328 in 17 starts last year. He’ll split time with transfer Wyatt Mitchell and freshmen Carson Williquette and Sidney Ferry. AROUND THE HORN The Pointers return a veteran presence at all four infield spots. Senior Duddleston will pilot the infield at shortstop after starting all 38

games last season. He hit .299 with six doubles and 26 runs scored. Sophomore Bradley Comer makes the move across the diamond to man the hot corner. He started all 38 games in 2019, mostly at first base, hitting .299 on the year with three home runs and 36 runs batted in. On the right side of the infield, Nate Jackan looks to lock down the second base job. He started 27 games with 10 RBI and 13 runs scored. Lucas Luedtke returns to man first base after being limited to one game a season ago. Freshman Quin Henwood will also see time at first when not in the DH role. Senior Gabe Affeldt gives the Pointers experienced depth on the infield. Freshman Jacob Lillge is a versatile option all around the diamond. ROAMING THE OUTFIELD Simmons and Nelson give the Pointers a solid foundation in the outfield. Nelson, a two-time allconference selection, led the team in

Fans can expect an upgraded experience including a new video scoreboard and better sight lines with new backstop netting.

hitting last year with a .357 average. He hit three long balls, drove in 33 and swiped 10 bags. Simmons was second to Nelson with a .354 average. He led the team with 43 runs scored, 42 RBI, 11 stolen bases, five home runs and school record eight triples. Frontrunners to see playing time at the third outfield spot include Brett Nelson, Anthony Moore and Matson when he is not behind the plate. Senior Neal Matson and junior Bradley Hansen also have experience and could be in the mix in the outfield. The Pointers open the season on Sunday (March 1) with games against Wabash and Anderson in Indiana to begin a three-game weekend. Following a nine-game trip to Florida over Spring Break, the Pointers open the home slate at Zimmermann Field on March 25 against UW-Superior.

jeremy jirschele head Coach Fifth Season Jeremy Jirschele enters his fifth year as the head coach for the Pointers in 2020. He took over the head coaching job on July 1, 2015 after four seasons as an assistant coach. In his four seasons as head coach, he led the Pointers to a 81-78 record, including a 42-46 record in the WIAC.

UW-Stevens Point also won two Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Tournament titles in his time as an assistant (2013, 2015) and finished as the NCAA West Regional runner-up in 2014. As an assistant coach at UW-Stevens Point for four seasons, he helped the Pointers to a 133-53 record in that span.

He also earned First Team All-WIAC accolades twice and hit over .430 in his final two seasons. Jirschele is second in the WIAC for career doubles (53) and is third in career hits (253). Jirschele was drafted in the 30th round of the 2005 Major League Baseball amateur draft by the Kansas City Royals and played professionally for three seasons.

Jeremy’s brother, Justin, was a three-year letterwinner for the Pointers and signed a free agent contract with the Chicago White Sox after the 2012 season and played professional for three-plus years. He is currently a coach in the White Sox minor league system. Jirschele was previously a coach at Wausau West High School for three seasons, two as a co-head coach, helping lead the team to two state tournament berths. Jeremy and his wife, Jennie, reside in Wausau with their five children, Keagen, Taelyn, Paetyn, Taetym and Rielyn.

Corey Opper Assistant Coach/RECRUITING COORDINATOR

Opper is in his third year as an assistant with the Pointers. In his first season, the Pointers’ pitching staff set a program record for fewest hits allowed (298) and tied the team record with 14 saves. Four members of the staff, Cole Erickson, Ben Miller, Nathan Mulzer and Drew Spaeth, were named to the all-conference teams in 2018. He coached at the high school level for 17 years (16 years in Rosholt, one year in Stevens Point) with three trips to state, including a state runner-up finish.

He has also coached Legion for seven years in Plover having made five trips to state including two state runnerup finishes, a state title and one National Regional runnerup finish. He graduated from UW-Stout in 2000, where he was a pitcher, and has worked with pitchers in the area on their development and advancement to college careers in the game.

DOUG COE Assistant Coach
