WE’RE UPDATING OUR BOX OFFICE SYSTEM We will be installing a new box office system to coincide with the launch of our Summer season brochure. From a customer perspective, there will be no significant change to the way in which we operate, and, if you’ve given us permission to hold your data on our system, then this will automatically be transferred to the new system. We hope people will notice an improvement in relation to how online ticketing is managed. Our new system is real-time; it will allow you to select your own seats; to see stage views from your selected seat; and to manage your own customer account. We’re also dropping our online transaction fee of 50p. We’re working very hard to ensure a smooth transition from the old system, and would welcome any feedback that customers may want to share with us about their experience of the process, or of using the new system online. WELCOME TO THE TRON SUMMER SEASON I always feel that the Tron distinguishes itself from every other theatre simply by the diverse range of shows it presents. We are ever-mindful of the very eclectic tastes amongst Glasgow theatre-goers and try to respond accordingly. This summer programme certainly exemplifies that diversity. On the one hand we have a cutting edge and very provocative series of new work and debate in our Mayfesto programme, as well as plays by the heavyweight of contemporary English dramatists Howard Barker. At the other end of the spectrum we present Hardeep Singh Kohli’s Indian Takeaway together with, on a slightly more bizarre culinary note, Tron Theatre Company’s own summer delight, Cannibal Women Of Mars, which is a mad intergalactic rock’n’roll romp with great songs by Belle and Sebastian’s Mick Cooke (no pun intended). Other visiting theatre company highlights include Some Other Mother, which will be staged during a very busy Refugee Week; and the return of the celebrated Irish company Blue Raincoat with the final (and best) part of their Flann O’Brien trilogy, The Poor Mouth. In terms of work by and for young people, Tron Skillshops re-stage one of their favourite pieces from the past ten years, Multiplex; we once again play host to the Merchant City Festival with a programme of work for family audiences (as well as a series of indoor performances as part of Surge); and Scottish Youth Theatre round off the season with their production of a modern Scottish classic, Mary Queen of Scots Got Her Head Chopped Off. Plenty to choose from…I hope to see you down here.

In 2010 a friend of Jenna’s was the victim of a violent attack. After discovering there were bystanders at the scene, Jenna created Flâneurs in an attempt to understand why we choose to intervene or not and asks whether ‘one punch is enough’ to provoke an intervention. Flâneurs is a new piece of theatre that explores the nature of violence in our cities and attempts to deconstruct the ‘bystander effect’ – the larger the crowd the less likely it is that anyone will intervene.

Imagine if Chekhov had written a new play which had never been performed…until now.

Have you ever followed the crowd because it’s easier? Have you ever done something that you never thought you would? Something that’s so not you? Well have you? We have. We all have. And it’s not all bad. Honest.

Renowned Scottish playwright, Stuart Paterson has translated many of Chekhov’s best known plays. Stuart has now turned his attention to Chekhov’s remarkable short story, The Black Monk, a tale of genius, love and delusion. He has used his knowledge of Chekhov’s plays to write it as Chekhov might have written it, had he written a play and not a story.

Bandwagon is the story of jumping on board without knowing why. It’s the story of mass hysteria, political fads and the compulsion to join in regardless. It’s the story of hopping on, falling off and learning who you are in the process.

Red Fish is a passionate cry for justice. Two young people are caught up in the madness of an industrial Klondike in the north Highland coastal town of Bunillidh. Fortunes are made and lost exploiting one of nature’s last natural commodities – fish. But these are mysterious red fish. No-one knows where they came from but with them has come cash, heroin, drink, violence and tragedy. Peggy and Calum try to live, to love, in a world where to survive is to succeed.

Victory is perhaps the most popular and enduring of all Barker’s plays. Set in the immediate aftermath of the restoration of Charles II, the play charts the journey of the widow of a leading parliamentarian, Bradshaw, as she gathers up the pieces of her disinterred and dismembered husband’s body. An affirmation of the human spirit in times of chaos, Victory’s ‘dark matter’ is shot through with flashes of wit and humour as Barker explores the outer reaches of human behaviour in the midst of political, social and moral upheaval.

And top of the food chain, there’s the Buffs. Know everything about every movie ever made, and to them, right, cinema…it’s not just entertainment, it’s life.

BY AJ TAUDEVIN DIRECTED BY CATRIN EVANS High up in a Glasgow tower block, ten-year old Star and her mother await the outcome of their claim for asylum. As Mama’s mind fragments under the pressure of their unknown future, Star constructs a poetic and fantastical world of her own. Programmed at the heart of Refugee Week Scotland, Some Other Mother is a story of loss and survival which explores the traumatising impact of the asylum system, regardless of the outcome.

“When I was seven years old, my dad set up a charity to help people in danger escape the war in Bosnia. Fifty Bosnians arrived in big coaches. We moved into an old boarding school with these refugees, to help them settle in. We lived there for four months. It was brilliant – there was a playground in my front garden, we had lots of visitors, people were always feeding me and I learnt to ride a bike! But the best thing about living there was meeting my friend Selma.” Terra Incognita presents a development sharing of their new production for 2014.

Peter also has a best friend, Stinkerbell. She’s a fairy but she’s no fool. She’s got magic flatulence and powerful rifts that she’s willing to turn on full force to any girl that comes between her and her love Peter. Enter Wendy. Wet West End Wendy. She’s falling for Peter, but Stinkerbell would rather she fell off a cliff.

She’s forgotten to post it. She didn’t remember! What will happen on the 25th of December? Join Flora on a snowy night and help her try to put things right. TRON PARTICIPATION – HAPPY 10TH BIRTHDAY AIM: To provide opportunities to participate in art activities regardless of age, ability or background.

WHY: To encourage the behaviour of theatre-going as both audience and artist because we believe participating in cultural activity enriches your life.

HOW: Participating in our programme can lead to developing new skills, meeting new people and embarking on a life-long relationship with the Tron.

24

In the last ten years Tron Participation has delivered over 2600 workshops working with over 44,000 participants. In this time we have produced 35 shows at the Tron, watched by some 11,858 friends, family members and people from the arts community, as well as touring to the Royal Lyceum, Edinburgh, the Byre, St Andrews and The National Theatre in London. To celebrate this milestone birthday, we have been re-staging some of our favourite pieces from the past ten years. Last season saw re-productions of The Woolgatherers and Project Branded from our P4-7 and S1/S2 groups and this season is the turn of our S3-S6 group with Multiplex. In the autumn we plan to launch an online resource 10 plays for 10 years as our way of sharing with schools, drama and community groups some of the best work we have made since our inception. This free resource will include workshop plans, scripts and sound designs, and give groups the opportunity to restage or make their own new versions of Tron Skillshops’ work.

TRON ANGELS SINCE IT WAS FIRST ESTABLISHED IN 2003, TRON PARTICIPATION – THE EDUCATION + OUTREACH STRAND OF OUR ACTIVITIES, HAS WORKED WITH OVER 47,000 YOUNG PEOPLE AND ADULTS AND, FOR MANY, GIVEN THEM THEIR FIRST INTRODUCTION TO CULTURAL LEARNING. ANDREW McKIE IS ONE OF THOSE YOUNG PEOPLE:

My experience of the education programme at the Tron Theatre has been nothing short of life-changing. Before January of last year, I had barely set foot inside a theatre, let alone stood upon a stage. But now, less than 18 months later, I am a member of two different acting and performance companies within the Tron; have starred in several productions; have collaborated in writing various pieces of theatrical work and been

given the opportunity to learn about the art of theatre-making. The supportive environment permits an atmosphere in which creativity, freedom of expression and self discovery are able to flourish…I feel very privileged and very grateful to have been afforded these opportunities at such a young age, and with no previous experience. The work they do is essential.

PHILIP REEVES

ELIZABETH BLACKADDER

Philip Reeves' printmaking displays a modern expressive abstraction, which is confidently conceived by experimentation with the process of intaglio printmaking. The godfather of Scottish printmaking, Philip Reeves was integral in establishing Scotland's vibrant printmaking scene, helping to found both Edinburgh and Glasgow Print Studios as well as the Glasgow School of Art printmaking department.

Blackadder’s signature subjects include landscapes, cats, flowers, still-lifes and portraits. Her work is based in the traditions of the Edinburgh School, but is strongly influenced by Japanese aesthetics. Characteristically, she carefully arranges objects in a shallow pictorial space to create intriguing and subtly decorative images.

Reeves was born and studied in Cheltenham then at the Royal College of Art in London. From 1954 the artist lectured at Glasgow School of Art before being appointed Head of Printmaking at the School in 1970. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and a Member of the Society of Scottish Artists. Works by these artists and many more are available at Glasgow Print Studio,Trongate 103, G1 5HD. 0141 552 0704 www.gpsart.co.uk An internationally acclaimed centre of excellence in fine art printmaking, Glasgow Print Studio is located in Glasgow’s new centre for the arts and creativity Trongate 103.
