It’s an amazing line up this season, the best yet in my view, with a range of exciting productions from a number of leading theatre companies. The highlight for me has to be our production of Ulysses, James Joyces’ seminal novel adapted for the stage by Dermot Bolger. This will be the first ever theatre version staged in the UK or Ireland, with an ensemble company of eight Irish and Scots actors. In addition to the production’s run at the Tron, we are taking it to the Belfast Festival, Cork and to Dublin, where the book is famously set. It’s a wonderful script and the production will be both accessible and audacious in equal measure ... a genuine ‘must see’.
OPEN DAY 2012 Glasgow Doors Open Day is an annual festival in which Glasgow celebrates its rich and colourful history. It gives people the opportunity to explore buildings that would normally be closed to the general public. IMAGES: JOHN JOHNSTON
Our 16th century clock tower which fronts the Theatre is one of the oldest surviving landmarks of the historic Merchant City. Designed by James Adam in 1795, the building has been used in various formats from a church to council workshops and even at one point a police station! Now the Tron is part of Glasgow’s thriving theatre scene with over 55,000 visitors per year.

In the Main House, I am delighted that we are presenting a premiere production from the National Theatre of Scotland, My Shrinking Life, an autobiographical piece by the brilliant Alison Peebles. Tron favourites Random Accomplice return with The Incredible Adventures of See Thru Sam; and in a coproduction with Theatre Jezebel, Glasgay! will present a stage version of the cult film Harold and Maude. We also welcome an exciting new company from the Borders, Firebrand with Rona Munro’s powerful play Iron featuring Blythe Duff in the central role; and the internationally celebrated new writing company Paines Plough with their heart-rending double bill London. In the Changing House, we’ve got work for young people from leading Scottish theatre-makers Catherine Wheels, whose The Ballad of Pondlife McGurk, about staying true to your friends, is aimed at a 9yrs+ audience; new writing from Sylvia Dow, who describes herself as ‘not a young writer’ in Greyscale/ Stellar Quines’ A Beginning, A Middle and An End; and Magnetic North’s latest production Sex & God by Linda McLean, amongst other things. The renowned Johnny McKnight takes on the task of presenting and starring in our annual panto, which this year is Aganeza Scrooge, an all-female take on Charles Dickens’ classic book A Christmas Carol. And our very young patrons will be called upon to help keep the countdown to Christmas clock ticking in Tron Participation’s lovely new show Christmas Time.

While his wife Molly waits in bed for the infamous Blazes Boylan, Leopold Bloom is in Dublin conversing in pubs, graveyards, press rooms, brothels... and then home. Adapted for stage by author and Dublin chronicler Dermot Bolger, and featuring a cast of eight Irish and Scottish performers, Ulysses is bawdy, hilarious and affecting, and celebrates Joyce’s genius for depicting life in all its profundity.

People amble, stride, jog and just…walk. It is a gift they don’t know they have, and one I never considered until I began to lose it. Alison Peebles is a leading Scottish actor who once gave an acclaimed performance as Lady Macbeth and in many others memorable roles. But that’s not the point. Alison Peebles has primary progressive MS which was first diagnosed 12 years ago, after a series of falls as a creeping numbness spread throughout her body. But maybe that’s not the point either. The point is that she is a vulnerable as all of us.

Celebratory, irreverent and, at times, surreal, My Shrinking Life examines the emotional and physical journey we are all on as vulnerable, fragile people, diagnosed or not.

Theatre Jezebel and Glasgay! bring you the Scottish premiere of Colin Higgins’ stage play, which opened in New York in 1980, of the cult 1971 movie Harold and Maude. Harold is a 19 year old rich kid bored with wealth and obsessed with death. He regularly stages mock suicides to shock his socialite mother, attends funerals and drives a hearse. Maude is a 79 year old widow who takes the best from any situation, even funerals.

The Roma communities have for centuries been ‘strangers in every land’, known for their music, dance and storytelling yet treated as pariahs in every place they have settled. Fleeing poverty, persecution and discrimination the Slovakian Roma people have journeyed to Scotland, a nation also known for its music, dance and storytelling. Workshops help to develop essential and desirable life skills and encourage imaginations to flourish, while complementing/preparing your child for the formal learning experiences nursery and school will provide. And best of all you get to join in too as all our pre-5 workshops are parent/carer and child, allowing you to share the experience and develop a positive and creative relationship.

TRON YOUNG COMPANY Tron Young Company is an ambitious collective of young performers. They work together to create an environment in which their creativity, confidence, and freedom of expression are able to flourish. Young Company promotes growth and progress, both for the individual and collectively. They actively seek to increase the breadth of material that they are exposed to and which they create. Think this could be you? Tron Young Company will this year be under the directorship of Martin O’Connor and will be working towards creating a new piece of theatre in Autumn 2013. Workshops will help get the best out of you and your creative process, with the content of each session customised to address the needs, questions and interests of each writer present. Write Tron will offer you fresh insights, new strategies and tools, motivation, inspiration, and a supportive community of writers. Each block includes a ticket to one theatre performance and a one-to-one surgery with the tutor.

Stephen Barnes is a creative writing specialist with fourteen years experience of equipping and developing writers, and producing work for page, stage and screen. He has been facilitating Write Tron since its launch in 2004.

IMAGINATE IDEAS EXCHANGE LIVING THEATRE invites a public audience to engage with a live theatre event in which they are the creators of the action. A theme is set, based on a play from the current Tron season which acts as a starting point for exploration. Living Theatre shatters the divide between stage and audience, and allows individuals a platform to explore real life concerns, desires and experiences that may have been raised from watching the show. Imaginate Ideas Exchange aims to provide a platform for new and established artists and companies to share works-in-progress with peers, programmers and anyone with an interest in the arts for children and young people. ADRIAN WISZNIEWSKI Born in Glasgow, Wiszniewski trained at the Mackintosh School of Architecture followed by the Glasgow School of Art with Steven Campbell, Ken Currie and Peter Howson, together becoming the so-called ‘New Glasgow Boys’. Wiszniewski’s paintings and prints are often figurative, but never wholly realistic. The figures are often used as a conduit to lead the viewer to the layers of meaning contained on the flat surfaces. Their interpretation is open to the viewer who cares to conduct his own dialogue with the work.

HELEN FAY Helen Fay studied BA (Hons) Fine Art Printmaking at Sunderland University, followed by an MA at The Royal College of Art, London, in Natural History Illustration. The subject matter of Helen’s work derives from a long standing and passionate interest in natural history. Artistically, her impetus comes from creating a balance between a solid mass and

the space in which it sits. Normally very small editions, Helen’s etchings go beyond the realms of Natural History Illustration. Monochromatic, moody, sometimes densely worked, they capture the magnificence of the natural world in a timeless yet contemporary way.

EILEEN COOPER Eileen Cooper has exhibited extensively throughout the world since training at Goldsmith’s College and The Royal Academy of Art, London. Living and working in London, she is currently a Royal Academician and Head of the Printmaking Department at the Royal Academy Schools. Her images contain an imaginative narrative that relates to archetypal themes with a distinct spiritual content. These narratives are simultaneously semiautobiographical and universal as they speak of the spiritual, emotional or creative challenges or questions we all experience. The playful, relaxed atmosphere of the images is constructed by the use of undulating markings and a confident use of colour.
