HAPPY 1

TH

BIRTHDAY

IN 2013 TRON PARTICIPATION WILL BE 10 YEARS OLD Whilst the Tron’s primary aim is to produce and present outstanding theatrical work for the people of Glasgow, equally as important is the work of Tron Participation, the education and outreach strand of our activities. Over the last ten years Tron Participation has delivered over 2,600 workshops and worked with over 44,000 participants. In addition, 35 shows have been produced under the Tron Participation banner which have been watched by 11,858 friends, family and members of the arts community.

fundraising event. We need people who understand the impact of such a programme and who share our belief in the significant role culture plays in terms of personal development and growth; genuine supporters of the Arts who want to make a difference to the community they live in and who are committed to safe keeping the future of this important strand of our work.

To mark this special 10th Birthday year we are in the process of setting up an individualgiving scheme to support the work of Tron Participation which will be called the Tron Angels. The Tron Angels will act as champions for the programme in the wider community and will be invited to all Tron Participation productions, receiving seasonal briefings and participating in an annual Tron Participation

We had an extraordinary Autumn season with many shows selling out, including our own production of Ulysses, which also played to packed houses in Belfast and Dublin; and we hope to continue this momentum with a Spring season that combines new work and co-productions alongside a return to some modern classics. Tron Theatre Company will stage four co-productions. The first is with Pilot Theatre, York and will be a new adaptation of the novel Running on the Cracks by Julia Donaldson. This production will open at the Tron before touring around England. We are also working in collaboration with a new Scottish company, New Inck Theatre, on a remarkable project, Scenes Unseen, which gives world premieres to scenes and short plays by Alan Ayckbourn, Athol Fugard, Patrick Marber and J.P. Donleavy alongside work by some of the best new Scottish writers. The company also combines forces with Fittings to present a Russian-directed production, A Man Came To A Woman, which will transfer to St Petersburg; and with Horsecross, Perth to present a new staging of John Godber’s April In Paris, directed by Rachel O’Riordan.

If you are interested in becoming one of our first TRON ANGELS or would like to know more about the work of Tron Participation please contact Dearbhla Murphy on 0141 552 4267 or by email at dearbhla.murphy@tron.co.uk THE TRON GRATEFULLY ACKNOWLEDGES SUPPORT FROM:

In addition to this work, we are proud to be hosting an array of brilliant contemporary plays being given very welcome new showings. These include some modern classic Scottish works: White Rose by Peter Arnott, Stitching by Anthony Neilson, Anna Weiss by Mike Cullen, and Fleeto/Wee Andy by Paddy Cuneen. Following the recent news item on a tragic real life story, it is highly fitting that My Name Is Rachel Corrie returns to our studio space. We also have the wonderful and iconic Ridiculusmus making a very rare visit to Scotland with Total Football: Vox Motus re-stage Slick and Visible Fictions stage a new work, The Mark of Zorro. And as if this wasn’t enough, Alan Greig and Grant Smeaton, theatre makers who never fail to intrigue, have devised a piece about the seminal artist Klaus Nomi and our Tron Skillshops celebrate the 10th birthday of Tron Participation with re-stagings of Project Branded and The Woolgatherers. Add to the season Celtic Connections and the Glasgow International Comedy Festival plus other shows and events in the Victorian Bar, and you can see that it's business as usual at the Tron. I hope you can make it down here to join us. Andy Arnold

Combining an emotionally driven narrative and athletic dance, this vibrant and visual production leaves the audience in no doubt as to the importance of this forgotten icon.

White Rose, unseen since its hugely successful debut at the 1985 Edinburgh Festival, is a powerful triangular love story about men and women fighting in the air, on the ground and in the bedroom. One thousand extremely talented women pilots volunteered for the Red Air Force during the SecondWorldWar. An

Seen from the point of view of Lily and her mechanic Ina, two women in a maledominated world, White Rose offers an insight into modern warfare and concepts of patriotism that are as relevant today as they were then, within an exciting, moving and thought-provoking theatrical experience.

TOTAL FOOTBALL MORE BECKETT THAN BECKHAM CREATED, WRITTEN + PERFORMED BY DAVID WOODS + JON HAYNES

As sports world bigwigs prepared to descend on London for last year’s games and bureaucratic busybodies tried to figure out how best to exploit the national fervour, Ridiculusmus created its very own satirical take on it all, Total Football. Picking over football systems, political wrangling and changing room banter, Total Football tackles the big questions of life – immortality, happiness and why England always lose. From the controversial attempt to create a united UK football team for the 2012 games to one man’s attempts to reproduce when he can’t even explain the offside rule, Ridiculusmus has patched up its metatarsals to examine the melting pot of what it means to be British today. Building on the Company’s reputation for making seriously funny, multi-award winning theatre and masterfully inventive comic writing, Total Football is a wickedly clever, mischievously sharp, and acutely observed meditation on our times.

SLICK Winner of a Scotsman Fringe First (2008) and a Critic’s Award for Theatre in Scotland (2008/9) Slick is a hilarious, dark and dirty exploration of greed, corruption and loss-of-innocence. A TASTE OF CELTIC COLOURS

String bands don’t traditionally include an accordion – but then circus, clowning, vaudeville, slapstick and contortionism aren’t exactly genre staples either; nor are gales of euphorically helpless laughter the customary expression of approval. All such bets are emphatically off, however, at a New Rope String Band show, featuring three manically talented minstrels who’ll tickle both your funny bone and your musical tastebuds beyond your wildest imaginings.

Celtic Colours in Cape Breton has been one of Celtic Connections’ closest kindred festivals, building on the island’s unique Scottish and Gaelic heritage. STITCHING BY ANTHONY NEILSON

‘I can't write for cowards. If something shocks me, I don't just walk away from it, I ask myself why I am shocked by it.’

Christine Bovill is no stranger to the Tron, and is delighted to be returning to the Victorian Bar with a four night run which promises to deliver her celebrated medley of Jazz, Blues and Americana with a few surprises along the way. Following her astoundingly successful sold-out show at this year’s Edinburgh Festival, which garnered 5-star reviews, one critic wrote: ‘…if you love music, and you want to experience something extraordinary, then run, fly, race to book your ticket immediately…’

ANTHONY NEILSON

Stu and Abby try to pick up the pieces of their relationship, but only end up picking it apart, stitch by painful stitch. A darkly intimate journey through a couple’s attempts to keep their failing relationship alive. Daring, sick and funny, it is a play about how far people will go in the name of love to fix what is already beyond broken. Stitching, banned in some countries, explodes with brutality and tenderness, it is a work that dares to ask very uncomfortable questions and is NOT for the easily offended. ‘We will fix it like new new new...’

We welcome new members to the performance/creative writing group Word Factory which meets on Fridays 1-3pm at the Tron.

Star of Oscar-nominated The Illusionist and frontman of acclaimed Glasgow band The Low Miffs, Leo Condie wrings visceral melodrama from the songs of Brel and Brecht, plus other Weimar-era ballads of revelry and debauchery. With a voice the Times described as ‘in the airy realms of Billy Mackenzie or Roy Orbison’, Condie veers from tender to theatrical in songs such as Next, Amsterdam, and What Keeps Mankind Alive.

DR SKETCHY’S ANTI-ART SCHOOL Hosted by Rufus, Ben & Nicola The cult-cabaret phenomenon that puts a new spin on life drawing. Instead of static models being drawn by artists sitting in silence in a cold art class, Dr Sketchy is what happens when Cabaret meets Art School. Models are burlesque stars, contortionists, firejugglers, tattooed beefcakes and sideshow freaks. Short poses are accompanied by live music interspersed with performances from the talented models themselves. The charming hosts sing and award prizes and encourage the audience to make art and mischief in equal measure while cocktails are served from the bar. Basic art materials are available.

CHILDREN + YOUNG PEOPLE

Tiny and Tall Tales gives your little ones the chance to explore, discover and experiment in a safe, creative and fun way. Participants have the opportunity to creatively explore using their imagination, in a safe and fun environment, developing both artistic and important social skills.

group acts as a starting point for exploration. This event is not an acting class, it’s an exploration. Audience members can participate actively; offer contributions from their seat; or can remain silent observers. This season Living Theatre will explore the Tron Theatre and Fittings production A Man Came to a Women. Monday 25 March 6pm - 8.30pm £5

HETTY HAXWORTH

Eileen Cooper has exhibited extensively throughout the world since training at Goldsmith’s College and The Royal Academy of Art, London. Living and working in London, she is currently a Royal Academician and Head of the Printmaking Department at the Royal Academy Schools. Her images contain an imaginative narrative that relates to archetypal themes with a distinct spiritual content. These narratives are simultaneously semi-autobiographical and universal as they speak of the spiritual, emotional or creative challenges or questions we all experience. The playful, relaxed atmosphere of the images is constructed by the use of undulating markings and a confident use of colour.

Oxford-born, Hetty Haxworth studied at the Glasgow School of Art and has exhibited widely in the UK and abroad. She specialises in abstract screenprints based on organic forms, with colour as the principle element. Her work has been shown at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, the Royal Scottish Academy, and the Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts.

Works by these artists and many more are available at Glasgow Print Studio,Trongate 103, G1 5HD. 0141 552 0704 www.gpsart.co.uk An internationally acclaimed centre of excellence in fine art printmaking, Glasgow Print Studio is located in Glasgow’s new centre for the arts and creativity Trongate 103. The organisation is registered as a charity in Scotland, is foundation funded by Creative Scotland and supported by Glasgow City Council.

AUDIO DESCRIBED performances

CAPTIONING is similar to television

subtitling and gives Deaf, deafened and hard of hearing people access to live performances. A captioner carefully prepares and cues text that appears in real time on units placed to the side of the stage, centrally or within the set. While we advise sitting in Rows F to H, we have no restricted view between our seats and the stage.

support people who are blind or partially sighted to access live performance. An audio-describer meets audience members to introduce set and characters by providing a verbal description which continues during the performance via a headset. Sometimes there is a touch tour of the set and costumes before the performance.

HELP US HELP THE ENVIRONMENT We are doing all we can to reduce our environmental impact. We recycle wherever we can, all our electricity comes from renewable sources and we’ve significantly reduced our CO2 impact. But you can help too. It’s the small changes that matter the most and everybody can do their bit to lend a hand. Why not: Pop your old tickets and info we send you in your recycling bin? Grab a bus instead of the car keys? Or, if the typical West coast weather lets up, why not enjoy a wee walk to the theatre before your show? Sign up to our e-list to get all our juiciest bits by email rather than post? If you have any suggestions of your own, give us an email on weliketrees@tron.co.uk Or, if you want to check out our policy in full, have a look here: http://www.tron.co.uk/about/tron_environmental_policy/
